Known number of deaths while claiming incapacity benefits nears 100,000 -

http://voxpoliticalonline.com/2015/08/27/known-number-of-deaths-while-claiming-incapacity-benefits-nears-100000/

"However, the increase in the frequency of these deaths is enough to raise questions about the way the incapacity benefit system is being run – questions that demand full, frank and immediate answers.

For example, the work-related activity group is composed entirely of people who are expected to recover from their illnesses and be well enough to return to work within a year. In that group, there should be no deaths at all – barring accidents. Why have nearly 10,000 people lost their lives after being assigned there?"

Various psychiatric drug treatments since 1990. Prozac & Stelazine in 1994 for a few years. 1200mg Amisulpride in 1998 for a year. 1999 to current time have maintained 200mg of Amisulpride & increased to 300mg a few years ago, with 2 stopping attempts in 2001 & 2003/4. i stopped all medications 5 times, for around 8 years in total, but the last 3 withdrawal/stopping attempts were disastrous. Am very unsure about stopping medication again. Have recently (in Winter 2018) had to increase the Amisulpride to 400mg.

The Mental Health Reform Act of 2016 (SB 2680) Would Be a Huge Step Backwards -

https://www.madinamerica.com/2016/09/the-mental-health-reform-act-of-2016-sb-2680-would-be-a-huge-step-backwards/

""The Senate health committee today passed legislation to help address the country’s mental health crisis and help ensure Americans suffering from mental illness and substance use disorders receive the care they need."

Note the term "mental health crisis."  There is indeed a crisis in the mental health business.  The crisis derives from psychiatry's spurious and self-serving premise that all significant problems of thinking, feeling, and/or behaving are brain illnesses that are correctable by psychiatric drugs.  This false premise, avidly promoted by pharma, is the cornerstone of the psychiatric-pharmaceutical industry, and is the primary reason that psychiatric drug use in America has reached epidemic proportions.

The fact that these so-called illnesses are so vaguely defined makes it easy for pharma-psychiatry to rope in new recruits.  But the maw of greed can never be satisfied, and pharma-psychiatry continues to lobby for more.  Every undrugged person is money down the drain!

For decades, psychiatry has been inventing new "illnesses" and liberalizing the criteria for others, and it is clear that their objective in all this is to make their so-called mental illnesses as prevalent as the common cold:  everyone gets one from time to time, and psychiatry has "safe and effective treatments".  There's no need to suffer – just take a pill or a high-voltage electric shock to the brain.  And keep coming back!"

The Pathologizing of Human Experience -

http://www.frominsultstorespect.com/2016/09/12/the-pathologizing-of-human-experience/

Today, if your behavior, thoughts, or feelings begin to concern you or a family member, for a fee many doctors will translate your experiences into mental illness terminology. Synonyms for mental illness, are mental disease, mental sickness, mental disorder, and psychopathology. These terms, as metaphors for experiences someone doesn’t like, have been with us for centuries. When used in this way, it can communicate something about an experience that others relate to. However, when we move from using these types of concepts as metaphors to believing wholeheartedly that they are proper scientific terms, we begin to lose the respect of those well grounded in the principles of science.

The New Human Rights Movement - by Peter Joseph -

"Published by BenBella Books, this text gives a detailed analysis of the oppressive and unsustainable state of affairs we endure today. More importantly, it proposes the critical steps needed to change course before ecological and social instability become irreversible. At about 120,000 words, including over 800 sources/footnotes, the thoroughness of this work is extensive.

Needless to say, truly focused and open-minded discussions regarding how to resolve our growing ecological and social crises are scarce to be found in mainstream dialog. The world is steadily inching into more extreme and stressed positions. While America, the cultural leader of the world, wrestles with arguably the most disliked presidential candidates in history, the public/mainstream dialogue continues to ignore the true global state of social injustice, poverty, socioeconomic inequality, environmental disregard and other critical attributes that ultimately underscore what we experience in terms of our civil or human rights.

It is time this pattern is broken. We need a new conversation and this text is my current life’s work to help. I thank you in advance for your support."

imo a massive range of stuff comes under 'mental health' - Yes a percentage of people are primarily mentally ill. i also think that for a percentage of people things are far better seen, understood & approached primarily as a healing crisis, a psychological/spiritual emergence/emergency, that is very much resolvable & can be transformed/healed/cured. i also think that there are some people who cross both ranges.

Within a more ideal system i'd wager that 80% of more of everything that comes under mental health could be cured/healed/resolved, medication free.

A primary biomedical approach is imo largely wrong for everyone -

https://sites.google.com/site/punishingthepatient/home

That said in cases i'm Not opposed to a more comprehensive psychiatry, front end services & potential wise use of medication - But imo it shouldn't be the primary system/approach to it all, & more traditional approaches should be used very carefully & judiciously.

Death Is Not Final

Description

"If consciousness is just the workings of neurons and synapses, how do we explain the phenomenon of near-death experience? By some accounts, about 3% of the U.S. population has had one: an out-of-body experience often characterized by remarkable visions and feelings of peace and joy, all while the physical body is close to death. To skeptics, there are more plausible, natural explanations, like oxygen deprivation. Is the prospect of an existence after death "real" and provable by science, or a construct of wishful thinking about our own mortality?"

Science Supports the Reality of the Soul

"True open-minded skepticism is our greatest ally in trying to better understand the mind-brain connection as it is revealed through the extraordinary lens of near-death experiences (NDEs).

True skeptics will thus greatly appreciate the rich presentation of NDEs in a new landmark book, The Self Does Not Die, originally published in the Netherlands in 2013 and recently expanded into an English edition. The authors, Titus Rivas, Anna Dirven and Rudolf H. Smit, have gone to great lengths to objectively analyze over 100 cases of veridical perception during NDEs, when the brain (according to the accepted principles of modern neuroscience) was in no condition to support such conscious experiences. The quality of empirical data and the objective assessment and refutation of possible materialist interpretations make this book a refreshing, and very worthwhile, read.

In short, this book goes a long way towards eliminating once and for all the feeble counterclaims of the materialist position which tries to deny, ignore and generally dismiss some of these truly remarkable NDE accounts."

I died as a plant and rose to animal;
I died as animal and I was a man.
Why should I fear? When was I less by dying?
Yet once more I shall die as man to soar
With angels blest. But even from an angel
I must pass on: all except God must perish.
When I have sacrificed my angel soul,
I shall become what no mind ever conceived.

Robert Whitaker at "Pharmaceuticals – Risks and Alternatives", 15th of October, 2016.

Published on 3 Nov 2016

More than 220 people from 13 different countries answered Carina Håkansson's invitation to Gothenburg to hear about and discuss research findings, new knowledge, and future directions regarding the risks of psychopharmaceuticals, and alternatives to the biological model of psychiatry. The result of the weekend was the new International Institute for Psychiatric Drug Withdrawal (IIPDW). Members of the Institute faculty are Olga Runciman, Sami Timimi, Birgitta Alakare, Robert Whitaker, Will Hall, Carina Håkansson, Jaakko Seikkula, Volkmar Aderhold, John Read, Peter Gøtzsche and Magnus Hald. These videos are presented as a public service, on the occasion of this new venture in changing the paradigm of mental health care toward one that is more holistic, humanistic, and evidence-based.

Robert Whitaker´s books on psychiatry investigate the failures of modern psychiatric care. He is the president of Mad in America Foundation, a website devoted to “rethinking” psychiatry and the use of psychiatric drugs.

I'm not quite ready to merge topics, but I fully believe that a psychosis is a "spiritual emergency," and only become illness when it's diagnosed as such by doctors.  Then, the treatment turns what should have been temporary, into a chronic condition.

You may be interested in this topic:  http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/13002-alternatives-for-psychotic-outbreaks/

I'm not ready to merge the two topics yet, as this is a discussion of the mystical element of psychosis, while the other thread is looking for alternatives for those in that state of emergency.

My suggestions are not medical advice, you are in charge of your own medical choices.

A lifetime of being prescribed antidepressants that caused problems (30 years in total). At age 35 flipped to "bipolar," but was not diagnosed for 5 years. Started my journey in Midwest United States. Crossed the Pacific for love and hope; currently living in Australia.   CT Seroquel 25 mg some time in 2013.   Tapered Reboxetine 4 mg Oct 2013 to Sept 2014 = GONE (3 years on Reboxetine).     Tapered Lithium 900 to 475 MG (alternating with the SNRI) Jan 2014 - Nov 2014, tapered Lithium 475 mg Jan 2015 -  Feb 2016 = GONE (10 years  on Lithium).  Many mistakes in dry cutting dosages were made.

The tedious thread (my intro):  JanCarol ☼ Reboxetine first, then Lithium

My roots go down (on freedom during a time when so many are enslaved)

https://beyondmeds.com/2016/11/10/my-roots-go-down-on-freedom-during-a-time-when-so-many-are-enslaved/

By Jen Peer Rich

"I have been thinking and writing about liberation lately. One thing the dominator culture fails to take into account is the real revolution happening right now in the minds and hearts of many.

This is not a revolution where we ask for equal rights, or we negotiate for freedom within the framework of dualism and dominance, this is a revolution in which freedom is experienced as a living reality, a reality that has simply been overlooked. Freedom is lived tacitly in the psyche. This quality of freedom is unbound, thus, the position of the dominator becomes irrelevant. It becomes forceless.

We represent an emerging paradigm of psychological, ecological and spiritual liberation. This new paradigm is emerging globally, in all systems, liberation is appearing in all walks of life and all schools of thought.

Much energy goes into keeping people, our earth home and our animal kin oppressed. Much energy.

Much energy is happening in the work of liberating ones own mind and coming to a personal recognition of innate freedom and intuitive ecological sanity. Much energy.

Do not for one moment underestimate the collective power and potential churning just below the surface of things."

Corbyn: Disabled people 'demonised' by austerity politicians -

http://money.aol.co.uk/2016/11/11/corbyn-disabled-people-demonised-by-austerity-politicians/

"Jeremy Corbyn said disabled people and those on social security had been "demonised" by some politicians as he slated the Government's record over help for society's least fortunate.
Mr Corbyn, at the Labour Party's launch to develop policies to fight discrimination and promote disability equality, said some disabled people had faced "horrifying" hate crime since Brexit.
The Labour leader said: "Some politicians have sought to legitimise cuts, demonising people with disabilities as scroungers and shirkers - remember that language that was used in the past?
"We will never use that language. It is out of court, unacceptable, and should be unacceptable in any kind of decent civilised society.
"And they have whipped up hatred towards disabled people.
"The hate crime that has grown particularly since the Brexit referendum has been horrifying.
"Horrifying in its racism, horrifying in its misogyny, horrifying in its homophobia, horrifying in its attacks on people with disabilities across the country."
The event, attended by 50 disabled people, heard they were now being "vilified" as "skivers" and the "undeserving poor".
But half of all people in poverty in the UK are disabled or live in a household with a disabled person, which Mr Corbyn said was a "shocking" indictment of the system."

WARNING THIS WILL BE LONG
Had a car accident in 85
Codeine was the pain med when I was release from hosp continuous use till 89
Given PROZAC by a specialist to help with nerve pain in my leg 89-90 not sure which year
Was not told a thing about it being a psych med thought it was a pain killer no info about psych side effects I went nuts had hallucinations. As I had a head injury and was diagnosed with a concussion in 85 I was sent to a head injury clinic in 1990 five years after the accident. I don't think they knew I had been on prozac I did not think it a big deal and never did finish the bottle of pills. I had tests of course lots of them. Was put into a pain clinic and given amitriptyline which stopped the withdrawal but had many side effects. But I could sleep something I had not done in a very long time the pain lessened. My mother got cancer in 94 they switched my meds to Zoloft to help deal with this pressure as I was her main care giver she died in 96. I stopped zoloft in 96 had withdrawal was put on paxil went nutty quit it ct put on resperidol quit it ct had withdrawal was put on Effexor... 2years later celexa was added 20mg then increased to 40mg huge personality change went wild. Did too fast taper off Celexa 05 as I felt unwell for a long time prior... quit Effexor 150mg ct 07 found ****** 8 months into withdrawal learned some things was banned from there in 08 have kept learning since. there is really not enough room here to put my history but I have a lot of opinions about a lot of things especially any of the drugs mentioned above.
One thing I would like to add here is this tidbit ALL OPIATES INCREASE SEROTONIN it is not a huge jump to being in chronic pain to being put on an ssri/snri and opiates will affect your antidepressants and your thinking.

As I do not update much I will put my quit date Nov. 17 2007 I quit Effexor cold turkey.

The Election: Of Hate, Grief, and a New Story

http://charleseisenstein.net/hategriefandanewstory/

"Normal is coming unhinged. For the last eight years it has been possible for most people (at least in the relatively privileged classes) to believe that society is sound, that the system, though creaky, basically works, and that the progressive deterioration of everything from ecology to economy is a temporary deviation from the evolutionary imperative of progress.

A Clinton Presidency would have offered four more years of that pretense. A woman President following a black President would have meant to many that things are getting better. It would have obscured the reality of continued neoliberal economics, imperial wars, and resource extraction behind a veil of faux-progressive feminism. Now that we have, in the words of my friend Kelly Brogan, rejected a wolf in sheep’s clothing in favor of a wolf in wolf’s clothing, that illusion will be impossible to maintain."

i'm very interested in studying all forms of spirituality.

i have looked into a lot of Theosophy, Alice Bailey, Magick, Western Esotericism, Luciferian, Ancient Druidic, Egyptian/Heliopitian, Shamanic, Alchemical, Hermetic, Secret Societies, comparative religion, Gnostic, Mystic & many aspects of Esoteric (for the few) & Occult (Hidden Teachings). i practise Reiki/Energy Healing.

To many Christians whom i have got into some discussion with & their views on these areas is that a lot of it is Satanic. i have had a lot of talk & judgement that i'm possessed by demons, a Satanist & going to hell.

i'm Not a Christian in any exoteric sense, & i don't agree with a lot of it. imo the Devil/Satan does Not exist. Lucifer is an entirely different Being to the Devil, & i only see the Being of Lucifer in symbolic & mythological terms.

i have No problem in essence with the life & teachings of Jeshua, in my interpretations of what that was. i have found an increasing conflict with Christians, especially on-line.

i don't consider myself a Satanist, although to a lot of Christians i probably am. Have other people here come across all this?

I'm not quite ready to merge topics, but I fully believe that a psychosis is a "spiritual emergency," and only become illness when it's diagnosed as such by doctors.  Then, the treatment turns what should have been temporary, into a chronic condition.

You may be interested in this topic:  http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/13002-alternatives-for-psychotic-outbreaks/

I'm not ready to merge the two topics yet, as this is a discussion of the mystical element of psychosis, while the other thread is looking for alternatives for those in that state of emergency.

After 27 years of being through what has been labelled as a case of severe schizophrenia & having done a lot of research into all this area, i'm just Not sure?

i do agree that the treatment of, & responses to psychosis/crisis could be a hell of a lot better.

i tend to see it in holistic/integral terms - mind/body/soul/spirit/environment. Things go on at physiological/biologic levels & i don't think that we really know what the exact weightings are within each case between biological, psychological/emotional, sociological/environmental/relational & spiritual/transpersonal areas, or even if such areas can be rationally separated? i expect that there are different weightings within different individual cases.

What are the differences & similarities that can be considered to be mystical, shamanic, psychotic & spiritual crisis experiences? When are things more illness & when more breakthrough? Is there an either/or with it all?

There has been a lot of debate, discussion & research within all this area. Some people distinguish what is more an illness from spiritual emergency, & some also take a differential diagnosis approach, that it is both.

Within my own case i tend to think/feel that there is Nothing wrong on a Soul/Spiritual level, but that there are issues at biological, psychological/emotional & sociological/relational/environmental levels.

i do feel that i could have been far better treated in the past & that far more help & support could be given now, but the past is the past & the current social/medical realities & realities of the current system are what they are, my circumstances are what they are. i have tried everything to address things, especially over the past 15 years with T-Total sobriety & working with a number of competent alternative/spiritual healers. However i have tried to come off the low dose of neuroleptic medication that i take, i end up in very severe near catatonic psychosis. i don't want to be on this medication, but it feels the wiser option & lesser of evils.

i had a serious accident & brain trauma in childhood, among other things, & there is a 35 years history of various difficulties - i was 17 years in active/heavy alcoholism/addiction - i went through 4 forced hospitalisations, 7 major psychotic episodes totalling 8 years in severe/florid psychosis. My overall functioning has been left very effected by everything that i have been through. That's a Hell of a 'Spiritual Emergency'!?

"No society or government can behave any higher than its Lunacy Level.
The Lunacy Level is the average level of mental illness in any group
or country. So since society consists of individuals, the only way to
lower the Lunacy Level is for a self-honest individual to stop lying
about his spiritual illness and allow Truth to heal him. But there are
so few who place Truth above egotism."

"There are many cosmic secrets which a man cannot be told until
he is ready to receive them. When he is ready for great things,
he will surely have them. The process starts when a man stops
trying to change the truth in favor of letting the truth change
him. He then becomes a psychic magician who performs the fine
feat of turning painful puzzles into healing revelations."

Therapy wars: the revenge of Freud
Cheap and effective, CBT became the dominant form of therapy, consigning Freud to psychology’s dingy basement. But new studies have cast doubt on its supremacy – and shown dramatic results for psychoanalysis. Is it time to get back on the couch?

Why is Jung; depth/transpersonal, existential & any & all deeper psychology, compassion & understanding of the human condition always denied, ridiculed & excluded? Why is there all this  denial, invalidation, trivialisation & romanticising around mental health in general? Why is the sociological/environmental/familial/relational/life circumstances Never given any proper acknowledgement? Why is any deeper understanding of Soul/Spirit/Non-physical/Transpersonal always excluded, or framed in terms of exoteric/organised religion & dogma?

"To make all this practical, you must watch the thoughts and
feelings which parade through you, but not say 'I' to them.
You must not identify yourself as being good, bad, right, wrong,
or anything else. This impersonal watchfulness breaks the de-
structive habit of false labeling, and sets you free.

Try being exactly who you are. At first it shocks, then it heals."
