marie123: tapering trazodone

Hello Marie,

i’ve been wondering how you are doing.  CONGRATULATIONS on getting that darn trazodone over and done with!  Doesn’t matter how long it took. You made it.

Perhaps waiting a bit on the mirtazapine would be wise as their mechanism of action is somewhat related.

Yay Marie,

Grace

  • amitriptyline from 1980-2002,
  • intermittent  use of benzos over 2 decades prior to 2002
  • 2002-2010 Klonopin 1-2 mg., ambien 10--20, mg, remeron 4 mg. and  trileptal 300 mg
  • 2011 Stopped ambien and crossed over to valium 17.5 mg. (updosing 2.5 mg. to cover ambien C/T )
  • tapered valium w/ long holds to 12.74 mg. from a high of approximately 20-30 mg/day
  • 2015-2023 tapered trileptal to 98 mg.  had to completely stop tapering due to multiple chronic, serious health issues
  • currently 2024 still on 98 mg. trileptal and 4 mg. remeron
  •   Currently on benzo hold as I have to cross-over from brand-name valium to generic diazepam.   The diazepam is way weaker and brought on severe acute w/d
  • Current dose of diazepam is 7.9 and valium is 6.6.  I had to up-dose the total valium/diazepam from 12.74 to 14.5 where I have stayed since June 2023.  I am crossing over to generic at a somewhat tolerable rate of .3mg/month after about 2 months of trial/error w/ updosing.  I am not currently tapering; will continue to cross over.

Hello there Grace. I've been wondering how you are doing also.  I hope you are doing better. Maybe we can taper mirtazapine together when the time comes. I know you mentioned it. Yes trazodone has similar mechanisms of action. There are similarities but have differences otherwise I would just continue tapering instead of waiting a few months.

Hello Survivor. I am so very glad to be rid of that drug. I hated it so much. You will be rid of it too, just keep on going with your tapering.

Oh I often wonder if tapering mirtazapine will be an option for me. I’ve got some big obstacles in the way that will take years. But you, are free and clear with only mirtazapine to tackle. I mentioned the similarity because I know remeron has some anti-histamine action for me, which is probably a good thing. Mirtazapine seems to be a bit of an enigma in the paych world. Exactly how it works isn’t fully understood but docs just know it is a good choice for sleep. You might actually sleep better as you lower the dose...if you go slow enough. Take care.

Hello everyone. I stepped off of trazodone three days ago at about .04 mg. I have not noticed anything except some stuffy sinuses. It makes sense because traz is like a super decongestant. It's a strong drug, and feel it's a drug that is vastly underestimated.  It took almost four years to taper, but I was undergoing ambien withdrawal at the time.  I was tapering at a point of being sick. I also held longer at times of difficult family stuff and a couple of vacations when I was feeling better. It feels great to be done finally.

I'll wait a couple months until I start thinking about tapering mirtazapine.

Marie

Congratulations Marie, well done!

How long will it take for you to tapper off Mitrazapine?

Take care,  Hopefull! :)

DRUG HISTORY:

November 2013- Zoloft, ( Bad reaction).

January 2014 - March 2014 Seroquel.( Quit Cold Turkey).

January2014- Mirtazapine, I was taking 15mg at one stage, reduced to 7.5mg, Pgad reactions to Mirtazapine. Doctor kept increasing it to 37.5mg, until July 2014. No improvement, experiencing panic attacks, on 37.5 mg. I had enough by October 2014. Began tapering.

October 2014- Started tapering Mirtazapine from 37.5mg.

September 2015- Down to 4mg of Mirtazapine. Crashed.

September 16th- Up dosed to 5mg. Held this dose for almost 5 months. Stabilised.

February 2016- Began tapering again. From 5mg to 4.5mg of Mirtazapine. (Rocking the boat, again)! Lol. :(

It's been about 11 days since I walked off trazodone. No real issues so far. I have a sinus infection and I am now taking an antibiotic. I don't feel any revving up from the A/B like I used to. I believe I am over benzo and trazodone withdrawal for the most part. I'm not perfect but everything left is tolerable. I've been able to travel and make plans finally. I have a big birthday number coming up and have tickets to the Rolling Stones for that day. Never got to see them in my youth. I can drink coffee now, but must avoid alcohol. I test it once in a while and it has not been pretty. I still have some exercise intolerance. Food intolerances are a lot better. These things will clear, but the point is I don't feel sick (withdrawal sick) anymore.

I've learned plenty by tapering these meds and feel pretty confident about a very slow taper from remeron. I just have to remember not to go too fast as I always got that "itch" to go faster. Remeron has made me fat and lazy. I feel hungover and spacey in the morning from it. I believe it has also has lowered my immune system. It does give me some decent sleep though.

Oh, Marie.  I am so happy for you.  It sounds like "normal" life to me...which I know is not completely normal, but coming from the lows we fall to, barely normal is so wonderful.  Enjoy your new life.  Being bolstered by this, you will make it through the remeron tapering, knowing the rainbow at the end of the storm...if there is one.

Ugh. I just realized I've taken remeron for five years. I hear it dissolves nicely in water.

Thanks Chessie. I would like to try the liquid if I am able to tolerate it. I never was able to do it with trazodone. If I can't do liquid, I'll get a microscope and a magnifying glass and I'll taper that tiny Mirt pill. Doc won't give me a script to get it made into a liquid. I guess it's too much work for him.

This is my three week update. I just finished a script for bactrim for a sinus infection. I tried to wait out the cold because these days I am trying to avoid antibiotics. I can now take antibiotics without any ramping up of w/d or going into a wave.  Earlier on in w/d I would have insomnia during the course of A/B and then a wave after it for about a week or so.

This is a great improvement.

My sleep is getting much better now that traz is gone. I would wake up every hour or so during traz w/d. I sleep for long spurts of 5 or 6 hours now and usually can sleep another hour or so more. So now it's only one wakeup and longer duration of sleep. This is another great improvement.

My baseline has improved also. My head is clearer and my windows are better.

It is wonderful to hear how well you are doing post Trazodone, Marie!

-1/06 - 3/07 Cymbalta. Fast taper (essentially CT); withdrawal symptoms after 4 mos (didn't realize was WD)

-10/07: 100 mg Zoloft; 1 mg Klonopin - tapered off Klonopin after 4 mos. Several unsuccessful slow tapers of Zoloft; went up and down in dose a lot

-Spring 2013 back on 1 mg Klonopin to counter WD symptoms; switched over 5-6 mos from Zoloft to 35 mg citalopram
-Two attempts at slow tapering citalopram, always increased dose due to WD; also increased Klonopin to 1.25 mg in 2014, then to 1.5 mg in 2015

-8/17-9/17: After holding one year at 20 mg, feeling withdrawal symptoms due to stress - slowly increased to 25 mg. No change in symptoms after 6 months (? tolerance ?)  - decided to start citalopram taper February 2018 (still on Klonopin 1.5 mg).

Supplements: fish oil; magnesium; vitamin D3; curcumin

Citalopram taper:  2/2018 - 12/2019: 25 mg - 11.03 mg I 2020: 10.89 mg - 7.9 mg I 2021: 7.8 mg - 5.26 mg I 2022: 5.2 mg - 3.36 mg I 2023: 3.3 mg - 1.47 mg 2024: 1/5/24: 1.44 mg; 1/19/24: 1.40 mg; 1/26/24: 1.37 mg; 2/2/24: 1.34 mg; 2/9/24: 1.31 mg; 2/23/24: 1.28 mg; 3/1/24: 1.25 mg; 3/8/24: 1.22 mg; 3/15/24: 1.19 mg

Hi Marie,

It’s wonderful to read that you continue to be at a baseline after jumping off your meds recently,  Yay! Continue to keep us informed, it’s very encouraging. I’m glad your sleep is getting better too.🛌👍

Tonight will be night ten of my taper from 7.50mg to 7.25mg. My symptoms have ramped up a bit, but they’re bearable. Insomnia has kicked in, but I do get some sleep. I’m not stressing about it. I’m putting a few different things into practice and we’ll see if that helps a bit.

It's been just over a month so I wanted to update my thread for my own record. I'm sleeping nicely on most nights. Last night I got nine hours with just a quick wakeup and back to sleep. I think I'm making up for lost sleep. The only other symptom is slight nausea and a gassy bloated belly at times. I have an appetite but I don't feel like eating a lot. I'll look on the bright side with this--maybe I'll lose a couple pounds. Spring is here and the long days of sunshine helps my mood. I think I'll recover nicely this spring/summer.

I'm getting hit one after the other with different cold/flu bugs. The beginning of the month I had a bad cold that turned into a sinus infection. Now this whole week I've been hit influenza. My spouse brought it home from work and unfortunately we're all sick here.  He works with the public so always gets the flu shot but it was ineffective this time. This is two years in a row I've gotten the flu. Next flu season I think I should get the shot. I've avoided it for many years but now because of my age I believe I should get one. Last year's flu lasted 3/4 weeks. I'm not thinking about w/d at least.

The warmer weather is coming and looking forward to getting a lot of sun. The past few years the sun bothered me too much but I'm past that now. I'll do some gardening and reading in my outdoor lounger. Now if I could just shut up the three chihuahas that moved into the house next door I'll be good. The woman starts screaming for them to shut up all the time. They don't so I'm treated to her screaming voice also. Maybe I'll start screaming too lol.

It's been 6 weeks since I stopped traz. I remember in 2016 I jumped off too high a dose and 6 weeks later I got hit withdrawal. It's funny in a warped sort of way that I don't know if the same thing is happening again with w/d. I've has an upper respiratory infection, followed by a sinus infection with A/B, and now the flu since I've stopped.  It's the second week with the flu and have symptoms weakness and stomach upset.

I had an offer of a free theater ticket yesterday and really did not feel up to it. I went and really enjoyed the show Beautiful. I crashed when I got home.  I've continued to try and push myself here and there and remain positive that one day it'll be over.

Marie,

I have had an upper respiratory infections and sinus infection with flu-like symptoms all winter but  I often find it hard to sort out the dizziness, fatigue, head pain etc from withdrawal stuff.  I try to tell myself that this too shall pass no matter what is causing it.  It sure doesn't help that the allergy season is starting to peak here.  My congestion is terrible.  I don't tolerate any anti-biotics that I know of.  I actually used a nasal decongestant spray yesterday as I was so desperate and about 8 hours later had a very scary episode of air hunger.  I think it was my meds interacting.  I won't be doing that again.  It took about 3 hours to pass.  Do you use nasal irrigation?  Since I don't tolerate anti-biotics I irrigate every day.  I absolutely know it helps, but I do think I have a low level chronic sinus infection.  It's just not worth the drug interactions to me to take an AB that might help.

"Powering through" is a good strategy for distraction and it is often amazing how it helps and how happy I am I did it.  The difficult part for me is convincing myself I can do it.  Glad the show was worth it.

Thanks for stopping by Grace. I'm pretty sure that the illnesses were real. The flu was tested by the doctor and tested positive. I've just been "real sick" other than w/d sick. I'm curious to see what's there after the flu peters out. I do irrigate but only when my sinus is very dry. I can tolerate A/Bs now. I used to get insomnia every night when I took them and then have a long bad wave afterwards. The last two times I had to take A/Bs I had no insomnia and just slight increase in w/d for a couple days after.

Yes it is the convincing part that I struggle with. I'd like to try to get back to the gym again when I'm feeling better. I'll try to talk myself into it and drag a friend with me.

This is the third week of influenza. I have a lot of weakness from it and just trying to get some energy back. It's the H2N3 influenza. the more potent flu. I got this same flu last year but earlier in the season. My spouse gets the shot each year and I guess it did not cover this one. I have avoided flu shots for years and have not gotten the flu for years until last year. I have changed my mind now, and will get the flu shot without the thermosol next year. My immune system is not that strong anymore from w/d, remeron, not exercising and age.

I only have noticed itching from the trazodone withdrawal and it's been 7 weeks.Sleep is much better and I don't have a lot of those horrific nightmares.  I think I will be okay.

The flu is finally gone and I've gotten my energy back. I've gotten some insomnia now, nothing too bad. It just takes some time before I can fall asleep. I am able to take naps now, so I just take a nap later to make up for it. I believe it's traz w/d. I feel lighter now, like a weight has been lifted off of me. I'm able to do more things more easily I've noticed. I have to remove remeron now, and I'll feel awesome I'm sure. I can appreciate the nice weather now. The last few years the sun bothered me and basically I was sick. Things are getting better finally.

Hi Marie,

I’m down to 7mg. I tapered last week on Wednesday from 7.25mg. Every small drop makes me happy, as it’s all forward movement. I’ve still got many, many more years of tapering to go. I can’t taper by 10%. The lower the dose the tinier the cuts too, so it feels like you don’t accomplish much, but each cut is closer to our brains healing.

I’m really glad you’re doing so well since jumping off your meds.

Sending hugs🤗

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi there folks. I am almost 10 weeks clear of trazodone. I'm really doing well. Sleep is fine and I'm getting long naps in. For instance this week I got two 2 hour naps this week. Everything seems a bit lighter where I can do things much more easily. It felt like an emotional weight that has lifted and my head is clearer. It's time for my brain to work on natural chemicals. I can't wait to be free of mirt. I will start a taper sometime next month if things continue to go well. Keep going friends, it's going to be fine.

Hello everyone. I'm about 10 and 1/2 weeks off of trazodone. I had to take an antibiotic again for an infection. I had a new symptom crop up after I was done with it after a couple days. I had a lump in my throat when I swallowed. I was a bit anxious about it until I remembered it could be w/d. I believe it was but it's gone now so all is good.

I believe patients are led to believe that trazodone is a weak, inocuous drug when they are prescribed it. It is sh*tty drug with terrible s/e's, and addictive for sure.

Well I spoke too soon. I am officially in a wave.  I think it is the antibiotic. I guess my luck ran out. I ended traz in Feb., then had a bad cold that led to a sinus infection with an antibiotic, a week later got the flu,  and then dental work with an antibiotic (clindamyacin). This last antibiotic did me in. I have AM chemical anxiety (not too bad but noticeable) and a heavy foggy head. All in all it's not too bad. Sleep is good. Feel much better in the afternoon/evening. This too shall pass.

Marie,

You definitely have the right attitude. Remembering that all of this does not last and that things do indeed get better, helps in getting through the tough moments and having the confidence to keep putting one foot in front of the other.

Indeed, things like surgeries, dental work and antibiotics are common causes of waves or flare-ups of symptoms in members, but as you said, this too shall pass.

Keep up the great work.

Thanks eymen23 for stopping by. I'll make a couple adjustments in the meantime. I will switch to decaf coffee instead of regular in the AM. That should help with the revving. I'll try to distract even more. Lately I've been watching American Idol and have been completely obsessed with one of the contestants. His name is Alejandro Aranda. I've been listening to all his performances and songs on Instagram. It's a great distraction.

How are you? Are you tapering or finished?

I’m still tapering and I’m actually doing ok at the moment. I recently switched to liquid as it’s much easier and it feels to be more accurate than the weighing method (at least for me).

Good idea on switching back to decaf and upping the general self care. Great job on tapering and I’m sure you will feel better soon.
