I have a friend on vortioxetine (Brintellix) so I was wondering, does anyone have any info on how tapering this drug might look like?

Thanks in advance.

  • 2,5 years of slowly tapering down Cymbalta from 60 mg. Then tried going from 8,44 mg to 1 mg in 8 days. (April 1st 2015). That's when the real hell started. Reinstated. Didn't help. I was added Ativan (2 mg 2 times a day for relentless akathisia that started with jumping Cymbalta). For years had been taking Zopitin 7,5 mg and Stilnox 10 mg for I had not been able to sleep naturally since the 1st day I started Cymbalta). Used to take Xanax occasionally.
  • All of the above were stopped cold turkey when I was hospitalized in the beginning of May 2015.
  • Prior to that I have been on and off the whole spectrum of different AD-s for 14 years (since I was 17).

My introduction.

Currently (evenings): 25 mg Valdoxan (agomelatine), 5 mg Diazepam, Olanzapine (1,25 since hospital, then doctors orders mid june 2015 up to 2,5 mg. Tried cutting down to 1,875 mg July 26 (crashed on the 6th day, then managed the symptoms until it got even worse on the 17th day) Updosed Olanzapine to 2,1 mg and started diluting it and taking by a syringe on August 14th 2015.

  • Tapering: Olanzapine (starting point 2,1 mg): 12/02/16 - 2 mg; 23/03/16 - 1,8 mg /---/ 22/08/16 - 1,4 mg

Supplements: Omega 3, D3, C, probiotics, agnus castus (helps with PMS), magnesium oil topically.

I'm on Brintellix to help get me off effexor. Brintellix has a longer half life than effexor.
Even so I would still taper off at the recommended 10% rate.
When I'm done with effexor I will taper the brintellix. Can I ask how your friend is doing?

She is not doing well - not feeling any effect from the medicine.

How are you planning to be doing the 10% cuts for those pills?

Lexy is correct, Brintellix needs to be tapered carefully, starting with the 10% per month method. Its an instant release formula, so using the usual methods here for reducing dose should be appropriate. See:

I'm not a doctor.  My comments are not medical advise. These are my opinions based on my own experience and what I've learned. Please discuss your situation with a medical practitioner who has knowledge of tapering and withdrawal...if you are lucky enough to find one.

Full Drug and Withdrawal History

Brief Summary

Several SSRIs for 13 years starting 1997 (for mild to moderate partly situational anxiety)

Xanax PRN

Various other drugs over the years for side effects

2 month 'taper' off Lexapro 2010

Short acute withdrawal, followed by 2 -3 months of improvement then delayed protracted withdrawal

DX ADHD followed by several years of stimulants and other drugs trying to manage increasing symptoms

Failed reinstatement of Lexapro and trial of Prozac (became suicidal)

May 2013 Found SA, learned about withdrawal, stopped taking drugs...healing begins.

Protracted withdrawal, with a very sensitized nervous system, slowly recovering as time passes animal25.gif

Supplements which seem to help:  High doses of Vitamin C, Magnesium, Garlic and Ginger.  Taurine, Vit D3, L-Theanine and Inositol. I'm one of the rare people who react badly to fish oil.

June 2016 - Started daily juicing, mostly vegetables and lots of greens.

Hi there.im on brintellix 10 mg.
I started at 5mg, then 10, then 20 mg.after feeling lost and broken my psychiatrist told me to "break the tablet in half " so now im on 10mg.this is a period of around 2 years.i believe its taken me since August to recover from that 10 mg drop.when things settle down, i plan to do a liquid taper @ 10% per month .
2005-2012 250 mg pristiq.3 month taper meltdown(dr knows best)
2012-2013 40 mg prozac stopped due to extreme anxiety.
2014-present 20 mg brintellix viortioxetine. Dropped down to 10 mg 5-6 months ago. Overnight (dr knows best) now on 10 mg with bearable withdrawal hoping to ride it out, then taper.

Personally I would start with 5-7% taper. You have become sensitized with all the pill switching you have gone through.
I would not want you to destabilize after the all the progress you have made to get to this point.

I'm on 3mg brintellix to help with effexor wds. My doctor who believes in withdrawals prescribed B to help buff out wd symptoms.
I will have to taper of that when I'm done with effexor. Please keep updating your taper journey.

Dear all

Anybody on Brintellix here ? Do you think this is a harsh drug to taper from ? Anybody has increased hunger on Brintellix ? or is this coming from the Anafranil CT ? Thank you.

1996-1997 Elavil 150 mg, tapered slowly as per doctor's advice - 1999-2005 Prozac 20 mg then 10 mg for a long time then nothing - was not aware of SSRI withdrawal I was told there was no withdrawal with Prozac due to long half life- 2007 Lexapro 10 mg then 20 mg, anxiety too bad to work, then merry go round of Paxil, Effexor, Xeroquel, Risperdal, any drug on the market even drugs for bipolar ... back to Lexapro 10 mg but pooped out + tinnitus problem appeared in 2010 on any ssri- Anafranil 75 mg Jan-March 2017 at 75 mg better then crashed after 6 weeks (poop out) CT  and switch to Brintellix 10 mg in March 2017 + Nozinan 20 mg and zopiclone 7,5 mg (these two taken for a long time). Extreme anxiety, sleeplessness, depression, panic, social anxiety, derealisation, professional disability lost home job marriage everything. I cannot do any changes at the moment due to the extreme PTSD I feel.
