The dare response has really helped me!! I'm learning to not fight against the sensations & to accept them. It's not easy, in fact it's hard work but SO very worth it!!

That is awesome, Bromor!

I'm impressed.  Sometimes these things work for me for short periods but I lose focus on them.  I think I suffer from an overabundance of self-help ideas so that I dabble in many rather than actually doing a few.

Need to change that.

Best,

Andy

Sertraline 50mg and Clonazapam .375mg from 2000 -- symptoms of dizziness Spring 2012

increased to .5 Clonazapam and 100mg Sertraline -- no improvement

Benzo microtaper from November 2012 to November 2014 (followed benzo sites "taper benzo first")

Started Sertraline taper in December 2014 cut by 25mg to 75mg; 62.5mg 1/1/15 and 50mg on 2/1/15

Held at 50mg through April 5 to use liquid
Reduced dosage in 10% or less drops from 50mg to 25mg -- at single tablet of 25mg on 10/5/15

Transitioned to all liquid for accuracy while tapering -- Horrible insomnia -- back to 25mg liquid and held until October 1, 2016

10/16 -- 11/18 tapered very slowly to 10.6mg.  No real improvement and never really stable so updosed to 12.5mg (1/2 a pill) for convenience and long hold.

After 8+ months of holding with no noticeable improvement decided to add .4ml of liquid Prozac (about 1.5mg) to see if that improves the situation

Supplements, Magnesium, D3, Omega 3, curcumin, Valerian, 81mg Aspirin, L-Theanine, Vit. C,

Been there, done that. I decided this time to really focus on the dare response & then incorporate scripture & prayer into the "engage" portion. The hardest thing for me is to accept that I may continue to have these sensations but I'm safe & can go on and function. Everything in me wants to fight against the anxiety & panic. Guess I can still learn new things at the ripe old age of 46! ????

Just have to share this article I read ~ extremely interesting & eye opening! This was written by a holistic doctor.

Started to taper very very slowly again.... 2% cut and holding.  I have to thank the "Dare" book ~ I feel more prepared as I start my slowest of slow tapers off of these poisons :) If anyone reads my journal here ~ I highly recommend the Dare book as it is a great self help tool to deal with those awful sensations that we deal with from anxiety/panic/withdrawal.

Hi Bromor ,  thanks for sharing the link ,  Gary Kohls writes some amazing articles.

A bit off topic , but see his articles on the Zika virus and the Brazilian microcephaly outbreak.

"Ignored is the fact that there are 35 other countries across the globe that have confirmed cases of Zika virus illness, but none are having any increased reports of microcephaly"

Congrats on starting your taper . . . the next phase in your journey.

Huge difference for me, symptom wise, in tapering 2% vs 10%. I think because my CNS is SO very sensitive due to my ct and rapid past tapers, that the slower taper is much easier for my body to handle. The few physical symptoms that I have had were managed by using the DARE response. (Yes, I realize I'm probably sounding like a broken record with this!). Exhaustion is a huge issue for me & lately it's been non stop. I promised myself that I will take some time for rest & care this weekend. ????

Hi Bromor-- I'm glad to hear that things are working well with the 2% taper.  You've mentioned this DARE thing once or twice and seem to like it.  Would you tell us more about how it works?

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks.  The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Final Dose 0.016mg.     Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017

Hmm, got me curious so I Googled:

Barry McDonagh's book Dare: The New Way to End Anxiety and Stop Panic Attacks.

DARE = Defuse, Allow, Run towards, Engage

From Pat Bryant's customer review on Amazon Kindle:

"1. Say "so what is the worst that can happen?" 2. Fully and completely accept and allow the discomfort (NOT DANGER) or anxious feelings and thoughts 3. Face it down - dare it to do its worst and 4. Engage in another activity - dwell in the moment to reacclimate the brain."

Sounds a lot like the AAF that I've been pushing only a little more aggressive.  It should be pretty helpful.

Brassmonkey - yes, very much so. Barry also talks about Claire Weeks in his book. This isn't "magic" ~ and takes hard work.. As we all know, withdrawal and all the anxiety/panic that comes with it likes to stick around!  To me, the difference has been in not fighting against the surges and all the physical sensations panic/anxiety like to bring.  I'm still a work in progress for sure!  I would encourage people to look into the book and FB group - very helpful.

Phone consult with my naturopath ~ significant change in my diet. We are really working on healing my gut & adrenals. Makes sense as we all know the gut/brain connection. Added another supplement to deal with the inflammation & constant pain & increased my kavinace that I take before bed. I've slept thru the night 4 nights in a row now! Still using Dare & holding on buspar & Zoloft. Will cut buspar again next week.

Did you have this , before  the drugs , B  ?   Just curious . Was it a pre- drug condition ?

My thoughts are yes, I did. But was prescribed the Zoloft as a bandaid for my symptoms. It worked for awhile, until I tried to come off. I know some may disagree with me on the adrenal fatigue but to me, it makes sense that there are stages leading up to actual Addison's disease. I would rather feed my body good food & use supplements than continue to pump AD at higher & higher doses. ????

Totally agree. Diet is the key . There is no future in medication.  As you said , it is a " band - aid " .

Doc ordered an extremely comprehensive blood panel ~ hormones, thyroid (not just TSH!), cholesterol ect. I have a follow up in 2 weeks to discuss the results. He agreed with me just how hard it is to come off of AD & said to keep going slowly. We really didn't talk in depth about that. I feel very stable right with my symptoms & tapering schedule. Again, DARE has been very helpful to me. I was able to tell the doctor that I do NOT have an anxiety disorder and truly believe it. He thinks that I have hormone issues & I tend to agree. Way back before Zoloft, I went through some crazy relationship stuff & then had the 1st & 2nd of what would end up being a total of 4 miscarriages. I was on Zoloft for the 3&4 losses. Anyway, I feel like I'm just rambling on at this point! Looking forward to walking my dog in the beautiful spring weather tonight ☀️

Had my follow up with doctor on my labs ~ I managed to lower my cholesterol 56 points in 3 months just with diet & essential oils!!!! Cause for significant celebration. ???? also found out my hormones are basically whack. Estrogen dominant ~ progesterone extremely low & testosterone low as well.... Oh & am hypothyroid. So I am increasing the amount of natural compounded progesterone I'm taking & will start on natural thyroid at 1 grain. There is a reason for the horrible fatigue I'm feeling & "organic" low lying anxiety that I always feel. Am still using Dare ~ which really is helping me as I've been tapering down on the buspar every 7-8 days. Definitely felt the last cut. I am listening to my body and will hold an extra few days if needed. My goal had been to be off buspar and tapering Zoloft at this point. However, I'm totally good to be where I am. I finally feel more stable than I've felt in a good 2 years due to all my cold turkey & crazy tapers. Cannot stress enough the benefits of eating right, not being on the computer all the time (I think it feeds my fears & anxiety sometimes), taking magnesium, fish oil & vit c, and looking into either the AAF that brass monkey talks about or the Dare program. ????

Did a cut of buspar ~ more than 10% (yes, I knew I was taking a risk). Definitely had a good 3-4 days of feeling it. Will hold until after the last weekend in April as we have tons of stuff going on. Still fighting fatigue ~ but that seems to be a bit better with starting on naturethroid. I still get cortisol surges & anxiety feelings ~ definitely not as severe as before. Learning to accept those feelings & not fight against them has been a huge step for me. Again, have to give credit to the dare response book & FB group. Amazing!!

You continue to do really well, Bromor!  Good work!

Please take it slowly as you get lower in the Buspar.  The difference between staying well and struggling can be adding one extra cut or an additional hold period as you go.  It will always be tempting to increase speed as you get closer but that is the time when it is most critical to be careful due to occupancy rates, etc.

You are in a good place with our friend Barry McDonogh.

Staying put with buspar through the end of this week ~ then will make another cut. We just moved to a new house ~ and I was able to make it through all of that stress even while experiencing anxiety. When I look back at how far I've come in this journey ~ I feel very grateful for this site. I found out why I felt so bad and how to stabilize. Yes, still have "waves" ~ but I feel I have much better tools now to deal with those sensations. Always keep hope, our bodies were created to heal ~ we just have to do the work of letting them (patience is a virtue ;) & supporting by eating healthy and supplementing carefully. Hope this helps someone today!

Did another cut ~ should've waited a bit longer. These low doses are tricky! Will stay here for 2 weeks before making another cut. Fell off of the no sugar wagon.....so upset with myself for that! Detoxing from sugar isn't easy but I feel so much better and able to deal with the WD symptoms when I'm feeding my body good food. That's pretty much all that's going on ~ just putting one foot in front of the other each day, accepting the sensations when they happen ~ boring probably..... but it does seem to be working for me.

Insomnia struck this weekend in the worst way ~ it came in the form of repeated cortisol waves (like baby panic attacks). Made me mad!! Got my DARE book out and re-read it. Yes, setbacks happen & I'm going up keep applying what I've learned. So, anxiety & all its sensations, are welcome to come stay and sit with me. I'm not fighting against it. I welcome this nervous energy & an choosing to be excited about this. Not easy for sure but I know this works! Also just holding on the buspar taper for a few more weeks. Read a great reminder about my(our) CNS being sensitized.....I've got to be careful and gentle with myself.

Bromor,

Sorry you got hit with the "insomnia bug" but I'm so impressed with your attitude!

I wish I could get close to your level of acceptance -- would make this whole process so much less hard (was going to say "easier" but nothing about this is "easy").  My idea of acceptance at this point is showing only ONE of my middle fingers to the gods when I'm up in the middle of the night!

You keep doing the D.A.R.E thing -- it is working so well for you.

This will pass.

Best,

You might check out the DARE thing yourself Andy.  If you're fighting with acceptance this might be a way to get a foot in the door and lay some solid ground work.

Check out the FB motivation group for DARE. It's quite helpful! I'm not an expert & actually say out loud "I accept and allow these sensations." & oh there you are, anxiety, I'm so glad you're here! I even go as far as to invite the sensations. It's working on the fear of the sensations. We are all a work in progress, Andy. ???? I do encourage you to read the book again or at least the chapters on physical sensations ect....

Sleep is much better. I really think some of the insomnia is directly linked to monthly hormonal stuff. Only thing I am experiencing now is heart palps/missed heartbeat sensations. I find myself getting scared ~ so I just tell myself so what, it's normal. Helps to just accept & go on. I'm holding on cutting more buspar until after our trip north to visit family. Will cut again first week in June. I spoke with my naturopath about the kavinace, as I was so concerned with potential withdrawal from that. He mentioned that because there is taurine & vitb6 in it, that it was ok. At this point, I have to say I trust him. I am taking less of it to sleep as my body continues to heal. And honestly, when I searched, there were mostly horror stories from people taking phenibut alone ~ not with the taurine/vit b combo as in kavinace. All I know is that i need sleep to function and continue on this journey ~

Just an update for myself. Sleep and heart palps better. Just came off a horrendous cycle so I know much of what I was dealing with is peri menopause crap. I really wonder how many women in their mid 40s find themselves at the doc with crazy symptoms due to hormones and are put on anti depressants.

I am quite confident that a SUBSTANTIAL portion of the antidepressant user base is just that -- women who are having hormonal changes that lead them to wonder "WTF is going on?"  Doctors are all too happy to answer that question with a script.  If you look anecdotally at the numbers of women on this board that got onto A/Ds either around their pregnancy or around menopause, it is clear that hormonal shift is a significant player in the drug company profit margins.

Of course, since that market is finite, it is critical that big pharma continue as it is -- targeting our children.  As horrifying as it may sound, I think the onset of puberty in teen and pre-teen girls will be an ever growing market for antidepressant prescriptions.

Best,

Agree Andy ~ and it makes me mad! I was reading about bromelain this week (researching for sinus issues) & the one article I read stated that big pharma doesn't want people to know there are natural (& much cheaper) options available. Anyway, I'm not going to get on that soapbox ;).

Had a good trip to visit family. Had some sensations ~ but I did invite them to come along....so I accepted & still had a good time. Only real issue was that I had major sinus issues which progressed into vertigo from the pressure/fluid. That did freak me out. I ended up going to my compounding pharmacy once we got home to see what I could take. Got a natural allergy/sinus product that is really helping to drain my sinuses (gross, I know!) ~ hence the bromelain reference above. Cut buspar today. Did a lesser cut than I have been. Just keeping on ~ I have good days & bad. Always make sure to be grateful that I now know the safe way to get off of these drugs & that my brain will heal.

Also, side note that Hey Sigmund had a good article on stress & anxiety. Enjoyed reading it. TGIF

Ready for another buspar cut tomorrow. I've started not using as much kavinace to sleep & it's going fairly well. Still taking my supplements, eating right & exercising ~ taking care of myself during this has been key. I'm not going to get all scared about what I could possibly go through when I'm finally off of these drugs. Just a quick update for my own benefit

Quick update ~ down to .75 of buspar. Feel pretty good. Still on 9 mg of Zoloft. I have to talk myself down from just jumping off of the buspar. I'm so tired of cutting & weighing the small dose. But I do know the wisdom of taking it slow & minimizing the WD effects. I'm all about NOT having surges, anxiety & other crazy physical sensations ????. Looking forward to the 4th of July weekend.
