Had a car accident in 85
Codeine was the pain med when I was release from hosp continuous use till 89
Given PROZAC by a specialist to help with nerve pain in my leg 89-90 not sure which year
Was not told a thing about it being a psych med thought it was a pain killer no info about psych side effects I went nuts had hallucinations. As I had a head injury and was diagnosed with a concussion in 85 I was sent to a head injury clinic in 1990 five years after the accident. I don't think they knew I had been on prozac I did not think it a big deal and never did finish the bottle of pills. I had tests of course lots of them. Was put into a pain clinic and given amitriptyline which stopped the withdrawal but had many side effects. But I could sleep something I had not done in a very long time the pain lessened. My mother got cancer in 94 they switched my meds to Zoloft to help deal with this pressure as I was her main care giver she died in 96. I stopped zoloft in 96 had withdrawal was put on paxil went nutty quit it ct put on resperidol quit it ct had withdrawal was put on Effexor... 2years later celexa was added 20mg then increased to 40mg huge personality change went wild. Did too fast taper off Celexa 05 as I felt unwell for a long time prior... quit Effexor 150mg ct 07 found ****** 8 months into withdrawal learned some things was banned from there in 08 have kept learning since. there is really not enough room here to put my history but I have a lot of opinions about a lot of things especially any of the drugs mentioned above.
One thing I would like to add here is this tidbit ALL OPIATES INCREASE SEROTONIN it is not a huge jump to being in chronic pain to being put on an ssri/snri and opiates will affect your antidepressants and your thinking.

As I do not update much I will put my quit date Nov. 17 2007 I quit Effexor cold turkey.

When I went to look for distraction the other day I made perogies from scratch for something to do.. I live with other people who eat.

Today I worked on the garden I have been doing a bit here and there did more today and had a friend and her son for dinner.. even had desert tho it was not planned it was good to have them.  I babysit for her and love being around her son he is a treat... completely enjoy him more than her some days... we have taken in kittens who are orphans there are things to do.  I guess I do have social time I talk on the phone every day and on social media... I just don't go out much tho was doing three days a wk to physio all winter long on the bus which is crap... here in Canada when I was in pain and still am. hmmm we will see... I am still hoping to end this with physio as I am not a good candidate for any surgery... ever.

My bp goes up and down still has for years now... maybe a post ssri effect ..

What kind of a doctor specializes in bp... is there such a thing?

Not sure if anyone answered this... A cardiologist comes to mind first. BP can be effected centrally by neurologic and endocrine systems, too (probably others, as well). Just a thought.

And apparently kidney as the doc set me up to see a few specialists kidney is on the list neurologist... a few others.. I think by the time I get to them this will have passed if the root canal was the issue for the head pain bp ect... and the tooth issue is finished all these things should be finished too.  I am hoping. If not I will get a baseline for all these things and will know should I have issues again.  The drug reaction was bad.. I can't stop things from happening in life .. car accidents death be it from illness or murder.. I can't control any of that.  I can be proactive about my health.  I have a baseline with a neurologist already we have an understanding about drugs... he understands I have already tried most of them and am not too interested in them.  Should the point ever come where a neuro drug would help me more then hinder me it would be good to have him along for the ride as he knows what he has given me already and the effects.

I am concerned about my eyes.  I have blurry vision off and on.  So I will keep the apt with the ophthalmologist for sure.

The Endo doc I seen years ago had one suggestion which was to take even more Vit D .. disregarded the side effects I get from even a low dose and recommended I take at least double that dose.

There is something missing in my  picture I have not found it yet, I have resigned myself to perhaps never finding it.  At the same time I do have good times where I feel well and can enjoy life... when i get too angry thinking about all the things I can't do and how my life is I think back to those years... and try to be grateful.. but it is not easy I have to look fast and get out as thinking too long about all this will put me in a bleak and angry frame of mind.

I no longer think doctors are going to be my answer I think if they were this would be answered long ago... at this point in medical history they are not getting it whatever it is.

I do need to take care of myself best I can while sorting thru what they have to say with what I know of withdrawal already and what I may learn in the future... I have been doing this balancing act a long time and I will continue to do it. At the end of the day docs can suggest what they like and be befuddled by my odd reactions all they like .. believe  me or not believe me... I will still stay on my path as it has brought me this far.  If I am going to fail in my own care it will at least be my doing.. there is something about that which feels good to me.

I am careful... I do have doctors that I trust... I am not without resources some of which are extremely good.

and it continues.  I have been tempted and tested once again... I am sure it will happen again until it does I am going to make the most of things.

Peace all.

In between death by illness and death by murder in my recent history I got out my bike and cleaned it up filled the tires and went on a bike ride to the beach.. with my young child friend.  He showed up at my door alone and in in distress... ended up staying over this was the next day... there is nothing like a child in distress to shock me out of my own head and make me pull my head out of my ass... the resolution to go the beach on our bikes (he road his to my house) was one I made to help him as it is his processing place when his life is falling apart and mine too truth be known I introduced him to the beach.. this particular one.

It was a good step in letting the grieving process go and moving on with life.  I had to make many stops and sat at least as long as I was riding...BUT I did it.  I had been thinking if I am going to have foot issues I need to find a way to get out of this post accident stalemate of laying on heating pads...back massaging machines ect...and before my sister passed I had made a promise to myself to get that bike out...   even if initially I have to take pain pills to get thru it... so I made a start at a time when it would help us both and it worked not a stellar day like some pre accident days but not bad.... I  was hampered down by more sorrow from the brother in laws death and then the bad atenolol reaction

 and need to try again.

I think today I will take my bike out... for a much shorter ride one with an easier goal.

I am reading a book about starting over.. and it seems I am having to start over in many different ways as I am sure many of you here are.

I am also today determine not to let any of this bullsh*t define me... I am going to step out and make an attempt to do something good for myself...

today it is bike riding be it a block or a mile.. I am going to make the attempt.

peace all

This is a victory ride:-) I am happy for you.

Put on trazadone for 8 weeks. Psychic akathisia started on 100 mg. Not a single doctor believed me telling me it is all anxiety in my head. Terrible suicidal urges. Got voluntary hospitalised. Acknoledged adverse reaction, put me off cold turkey. Instalated mirtazapine to block the reaction of trazadone. 5 weeks on mirtazapine.acathisia worsened, suicidal, homicidal urges. Nobody believed. Finally they stopped mirtazapine cold turkey. My heighest dose of trazadone was 200 mg, of mirtazapine 30 mg. Since the c/t, suicidal, acathisia continuing.

tried promethazine for sleep. Tried atarax. Currently taking klonopin for 10 days. Good for sleep, but my condition worsening. Unable to tell if it is klonopin or a bad wave.

In the former hospital i took twice gabapentin. It should be all my medication.

i was offered promethazin for sleep 25 mg and also small amount of quetiapine. Both are antipsychotics, even if ptomethszin very weak. Terribly afraid.

Thank you for such an inspiring update bt, if I hadn't already gone out for my walk today, you would have inspired me to go.  If it wasn't pouring with rain now, I would probably be going for another one :)

I'm not a doctor.  My comments are not medical advise. These are my opinions based on my own experience and what I've learned. Please discuss your situation with a medical practitioner who has knowledge of tapering and withdrawal...if you are lucky enough to find one.

My Introduction Thread

Full Drug and Withdrawal History

Brief Summary

Several SSRIs for 13 years starting 1997 (for mild to moderate partly situational anxiety) Xanax PRN ~ Various other drugs over the years for side effects

2 month 'taper' off Lexapro 2010

Short acute withdrawal, followed by 2 -3 months of improvement then delayed protracted withdrawal

DX ADHD followed by several years of stimulants and other drugs trying to manage increasing symptoms

Failed reinstatement of Lexapro and trial of Prozac (became suicidal)

May 2013 Found SA, learned about withdrawal, stopped taking drugs...healing begins.

Protracted withdrawal, with a very sensitized nervous system, slowly recovering as time passes

Supplements which have helped: Vitamin C, Magnesium, Taurine

Bad reactions: Many supplements but mostly fish oil and Vitamin D

June 2016 - Started daily juicing, mostly vegetables and lots of greens.

Aug 2016 - Oct 2016 Best window ever, felt almost completely recovered

Oct 2016 -Symptoms returned - bad days and less bad days.

April 2018 - No windows, but significant improvement, it feels like permanent full recovery is close.

I did it to appease my back shoulder neck... body... I used some A535... I stole it actually from my son.  I use absorbing junior for body pain I use it a LOT I am out... so I took some of the too smelly too hot stuff he uses when he gets hurt playing sports.

I went.  I rested a few times... but I went.

I am not doing  a marathon here the point is to be moving.  Pain keeps me still which is not what bodies are meant to do... I think I learned in the pain clinic years  ago to push thru the pain and get moving... when the time is right not when you first hurt and bones are not healed yet... I am way past that point I think.  So putting forth the effort.

You know I am not sure how much good that did me to get on that bike today and get going but it did a world of good for my head.... as sucking out... reminds me too much of all the times I have failed and I have had enough of it. I am done with it.

While I was riding yesterday I thought of all the hours  I had spent in the house in a lot of pain longing to get outside ... and truly enjoyed it.  I did not start with the same frame of mind today.  I started out kind of mad... at the entire situation...but I ended in a different place a place I like.. a winning place.

Thanks Petu I was mulling over what you said in your post when I started to write the post above...

I needed that. :)

It's okay to start out small with new habits.  Maybe just resolve to just take the bike out and walk a few blocks (or some short distance) every day, and if you still don't feel like riding it, give yourself permission go home. Chances are you'll be okay with riding it a bit, but if you aren't, don't beat up on yourself. Or maybe do something a bit different, like take a walk

Not meaning to discourage you, it's just that whenever I've made a great big resolution to do something new, it seems I'm more likely to quit trying if I've promised myself I'll do it 100% of the time.  When I got back into exercising at the end of withdrawal, I started out with just a few exercises a few times a week and worked up to six days of alternating back exercises (I have a pinched nerve from a work injury almost eleven years ago) and exercises for stronger bones. So far so good, and a lot of times I do the bone exercises on Sunday, too.

Good going, btdt!

I will keep that in mind thanks

I find my foot hurts when I walk hence the bike.. it is better if I don't put weight on it.

I am just very frustrated with the entire situation and I guess it is showing... but sometimes if I have to angry and it ends up being fuel for something I need to do all the better today it worked another time it may not.

I feel a bit all over the place and no place lately... I will level out in time I guess.

peace to you Jemima

I have finished my antibiotics and starting to feel not so hot again.  Tomorrow is mothers day I will be traveling to go to my brother in laws funeral service seems to be a long time between his death and the service which is on Monday.  I have an apt with the root canal specialist coming at the end of next wk but feel I may need more antibiotics before then... sucks as I was hoping I was seeing the end of this. I may see a doc tomorrow as I don't want this to get out of hand will see how I feel in the morning. That is it for my update.

Happy mothers day to all the mothers out there.

I wish you peace.

Out of the last 45 days I have been on antibiotics for 27...

I did see a dental specialist today who says since I don't have the money to do the repair on the root canal pulling them is the next option.  Extraction is covered but not for a few more wks... I am not feeling sick to the extreme but I am not right either.

One odd thing I have to report is when he was examining my touchy teeth I had extreme pain in my spine... the nurse brought me a pillow for my back but I can't say it helped much.  So this could tweak my anxiety to over drive if I had the energy to get excited about anything but I don't so I will wait it out as I have been doing.

I am curious if anyone has had this or has heard of such a thing...meaning pain in the spine when teeth or tested... just curious.

peace all I am having a nap.

I could not talk to him about the tooth when whatever he did triggered the back pain and could not tell you what he did in there to trigger it... I can say it was the type of excruciating pain that makes you not think... stop thinking ... slip away into shock had it lasted a second more...

This is on my mind tho I have not had the pain since... he asked if I had a back problem how could I say I didn't with all the stuff going on with me...

but I think that particular back issue was unrelated to anything I have known to date to do with my back. Not sure something is not right.  The pain was so great it threw me and I did not have the presence of mind to say this pain in my back is related to whatever you did in my mouth and not what I know of back issues I have had in the past... I just wanted to run away and barely heard anything else he had to say.  I am perplexed by it. Still.

I am looking for and can't find the recent thread talking about beta blockers... anyone know what it is called?

It was not part of the title.

I am wondering how long the fallout from a beta blocker adverse reaction lasts and how it presents as I am feeling unwell and wonder if it has something to do with that reaction.

I was hoping to read what the other person had to say about the experience but I can't find it :(

What I was trying to find out is if one dose of antenolol that caused a bad reaction could upset my apple cart for an extended time... as I am feeling quite unwell and a lot of time has passed already.  Certainly it could be something else.  I am just curious.  Stopped bothering too look any further and started a small amount of taurine today am thinking of adding zinc... we will see I do things very slowly... as I tend to be sensitive.

My memory and cognition had slipped off the chart and I could not focus enough to recall the title... I could not focus and could not get the words I read to go into my head.  I think the taurine has helped with it whatever the cause. I am back to forgetting cause and going for symptoms treatment.

I have upped the taurine to about 350mg and am finding this amount which is about double my normal dose is helping.  I am taking it as I feel I need it...morning dose 350 afternoon dose 250 seems to be working. I do feel a bit slow.

I will not take it long as I don't like to take anything.  The idea has crossed my mind that maybe if I was taking taurine consistently I could add vit D3 and not have anxiety or insomnia... just a thought as I am deficient according to my blood work.

I am not going to do it now as I feel unstable... but it is an idea for another time ... D3 and maybe Zinc as I have read the zinc can prevent high glutamate from damaging cells.

I take taurine with magnesium and that helps me sleep

Please note - I am not a medical practitioner and I do not give medical advice. I offer an opinion based on my own experiences, reading and discussion with others. On Effexor for 2 months at the start of 2005. Had extreme insomnia as an adverse reaction. Changed to mirtazapine. Have been trying to get off since mid 2008 with numerous failures including CTs and slow (but not slow enough tapers)Have slow tapered at 10 per cent or less for years. I have liquid mirtazapine made at a compounding chemist.

Was on 1.6 ml as at 19 March 2014.

Dropped to 1.5 ml 7 June 2014. Dropped to 1.4 in about September.

Dropped to 1.3 on 20 December 2014. Dropped to 1.2 in mid Jan 2015.

Dropped to 1 ml in late Feb 2015. I think my old medication had run out of puff so I tried 1ml when I got the new stuff and it seems to be going ok. Sleep has been good over the last week (as of 13/3/15).

Dropped to 1/2 ml 14/11/15 Fatigue still there as are memory and cognition problems. Sleep is patchy but liveable compared to what it has been in the past.

DRUG FREE - as at 1st May 2017

I am thinking I am having some type of rebound from the downed state I was put in due to the reaction to the beta blocker... atenolol.  I hope it does not last long but it may.  Since kicking something down so low it sprang back up with the  vengeance of a wounded animal... I am placating it with taurine...for now. Hoping it does not last long and I can get back to baseline with no added supplements soon.  I always feel any reaction is setting me back slowing down my healing path but really after all this time maybe not maybe I am not really healing at all... by being drug and supplement free... if a drug reaction can hit this far out from a type of kindling... then I can imagine it hitting at 10 years off maybe even 20 then I would have to all this permanent damage to some extent. Something is forever not working... when do we decide it is not going to heal completely and give it up... just get over waiting.

The increased dose of taurine I believe played a large part in a long sound afternoon nap yesterday.  Last night I took a zinc capsule called opti zinc 30... it has a warning on the bottle that zinc can deplete copper. I drank the juice from one grapefruit to ad some vit C to my diet. Taurine and C are suppose to lower glutamate..

As I can't be sure of my copper supply I may not take more not sure.

The result is I woke today feeling normal relative to me situation of course.  I can think I am not feeling like I am jumping out of my skin.

Today I have not taken anything yet will see how the day pans out.

I have the new book called Nutrient Power - Heal your biochemistry and heal your brain.

In this  book there is diagram of the Methylation Cycle a simplified version ( I know as I just tried to look one up to add here- they are very complex)

In the simplified version at the end of the left side of diagram it ends with taurine.  So if any of us have an issue with this tauine may be helpful.

I am sick again.  Sinus and cough yet again... maybe coming from a bad root canal so will not get better till the tooth is pulled a dentist that will take my insurance has not opening for more than a wk... I am thinking the bad root canal tooth may not be the source of the infection but a different tooth close to it... whatever more drugs.  This is my fourth round of antibiotics since the end of March I will be taking a probiotic with it.  Feeling a bit fed up with the entire situation.

Thanks Mamma it has been going on a couple of months now.  I am hoping to have it out in June the first apt I can get.  I am tired of being on antibiotics this is the 4th time Since the end of March... it seems completely stupid to me that I cannot be seen sooner because of insurance issues but that is how it is.  Not just insurance issues money issues if I had cash in hand this tooth would likely be gone by now. My new life as a beggar... takes a lot of getting use to.  Just one more excuse to be treated like a second class person.  It is getting very old.

  • 2 weeks later...

So I called the dental specialist and explained my situation Monday morning.  Sick on antibiotics too scared of meningitis to quit them.. and fed the hell up... was told to come in for a consultation....

I went in nice undergad to talk to... surly dentist... but I was making do and desperate.

He pulls the tooth... out I go.

Details if your a detail person.

We talked of my drug reactions and lidocaine... he use maricaine something like that... you would think I would know since it was suggested by the drug testing center I went to for the lidocaine reaction... I did not say he came up with it on his own or I would have.

He was a genius with freezing no real pain... none I did not expect.. that calmed me as I have had enough work done I can tell when they don't know what they are doing.   Nice chat student waiting on the freezing to take ... as soon as he tries to pull it ... trouble it is a no go.. it did not freeze ... bad sing likely infected lol... what had I been saying... dah

so I get another shot it works tooth pops out no trouble at all if it weren't for the freezing knowing How I could have done it myself at home in 1 minute ... as that is all it took 1 minute to pull it out.

The dentist said it came out way to easy it was bad.

So I leave to sing papers then went back in to have a look at this source of trouble...

Just the student again I ask him if I can have my tooth he said "no"  can I look at it "yes"

It had a sack on the root end of it.. or that is how it looked to me... small yellow sack yep I touched it.. and it was no so much a sack as just yuck.  It is gone.

Before the dentist came in my neck hurt quite bad... and when I left it hurt ... but there was no pulling really on that tooth so it was not that... once outside my shoulder front back hurt and my one boob...

The shoulder pain lasted all night beyond what codiene could handle... the next day it moved to my back ... lower and closer to my spine.

The dental office called to ask how I was I said I was still coughing and had this pain... she said that is not part of this so see my family doctor the tooth area so far is fine doing salt water and you can be sure searched online to get how to care for tooth extraction... followed it to the letter.

Tannins in the teabag...ect

So I was told to see my own doc for a lung xray.  However I had to see a kindey specialist as my bp has been all over the place.

She tested my bp with a machine several times and say it is fine... I don't need anything my bp is 110...

lol

my bp has never been 110...

so I think her machine is broken.

She said my doc still thinks there is a problem to do a 24 hour bp monitor... sure with another great machine like she has in her office.

I checked my bp before I went it was 170... then 140.. when I got home I took it several times... nothing under 140.

In a way it is a insult to my doctor to say she can't check a bp...and I just don't believe and told her so... she said her machine is not wrong..

so there you have it I am cured.

She did say maybe it was high because I have been sick... don't know I was hoping to come home and find my bp went to 110...seemingly that is all magical thinking and bs.

still here. so far

peace all

The very next day after seeing the Kidney specialist I am sick again... this time kidney infection.. maybe a stone we will see.. have been really down for the count this time.. lots of pain... lots of fatigue.  I can't seem to catch a health break lately.

When I did a urine test at the kidney specialist it smelled bad she checked it for protein I was told.  I called her back to see if she had sent it for further testing and the receptionist said no and she had not typed the notes yet so could not check on protein I will pay the 30 bucks to see what that report says... I told her about the back pain she did not both to check. Not much of a doctor if you ask me but I have come to expect shoddy care from the place I she works I think I will ask to be sent else where from now on as it is not the only place to go for a specialist. I may even venture much further. We will see.

Oh no not something else  :( . I'm really sorry to read this BT, you deserve a break.

Glad you got the rotten tooth pulled out but now you have this,  hopefully it will get better now

the tooth has gone. Can't help thinking that maybe the infection was getting to the kidneys too?

I haven't a clue but hope that if that is the case you will start to feel better soon.

Thanks Momma that is what I thought too but the doctor who dx me last wk said he thought these two infections were unrelated... my faced swelled up yesterday in the wee hours and I went to hosp but by the time I seen a doc it had gone down again...

They said if it swells again to go back... I think if it does I will remain upright a few hours before I go to see if the swelling will just go down again... Emerg doc said the drug I am on for the kidney may not work on the tooth if infection is still an issue there or if there is another infected tooth... still don't know really.  Hoping for the best rinsing a lot with salt water and hoping.  I told him I am out of money for cabs this month so it had better not swell up again.  I am way to sick to take the bus... just can't manage it. I had an ultasound today to check for kidney stones... it will take 3-4 days to get the results.  These antibiotics will be gone in a day or so and we will see what other bugs I can grow once I am off these drugs.

It seems that is what they are waiting for ... me to finish the drugs.  So I was told at emerg I was being treated and they would not consider that issue....

So in a few more days when these drugs are done I will know better.  I have been extremely ill while on these meds food only  to take the meds only soup so far... can't keep it down or it sickens my stomach at one bite. Guess we will see in a few days.

With all of this in the last few months since I have had one infection after the other ...not one vile of blood has been drawn... that seems a bit odd to me.

I am way behind here have not had the energy to keep up with you stories.

I hope your all doing well.

peace all

Hi Bt, you have helped me over on topix. I remember you convincing me that tapering was the way to go

and pointing me here. Thank you for that it's been a life saver.

I'm sorry you have been through so much and now more illness and injury. I hope you can recover from it all

as pain free as possible. It's interesting about the opiates, I had been taking effexor and codeine for years with

all the side effects but coped. Physically falling apart but just about functional mentally. Then it was discovered

I was reacting to codeine and put on tramadol instead. From that day on I was not very functional at all and

completely disabled but as it was following cancer surgery I  blamed the illness. Then when I was researching

effexor discovered it should never have been prescribed along with tramadol..

We live and learn! Tramadol is the next one I will be tapering but will need to find alternative pain relief first.

Momma I am curious as to the type of reaction you had to codeine?

I took it for years before I was put on prozac to as the doctor said "help me lower my dose of tylenol #3" as he thought I was taking too much years after a car accident... I was working and functional on codeine too...and fell completely apart after the prozac.  I am sorry to hear you had to do battle with cancer I know you wrote this long ago but I can't remember things for long... often not always. I hope you are well.

peace

I have been to the hosp have some new antibiotics two so far... I think we are on the right track finally feel a bit better I think.  Long time in emerg but sometimes there no other place to be.  I think I have been screwing up on here sorry about that sometimes your the last one to know your losing the plot.  I think this is one of those times. I was given a different pain pill this time but being me have been too scared to try it... will have to look it up first might bite if I did not have tylenol number three to fall back on... given I know what it does to me.  Makes me talk too much mostly but takes the edge off the pain... I will settle for that as I don't need any new problems.  Going to lay low and beat this infection.  I have been asking doctors for awhile now if a kidney infection can cause pain in a foot and today I am thinking this infection is just bigger and stronger than we all suspected maybe been hanging around longer than initially thought. I am kinda making a note on the foot thing here to remind myself for later in case the pain in the foot goes away with these antibiotics if it does then I will know it is was in some way related... in case I ever get it again.  I really was not thinking well and imagine I will forget about the foot once this is behind me hence the note.

peace all.

Will keep my fingers crossed for you

Please note - I am not a medical practitioner and I do not give medical advice. I offer an opinion based on my own experiences, reading and discussion with others. On Effexor for 2 months at the start of 2005. Had extreme insomnia as an adverse reaction. Changed to mirtazapine. Have been trying to get off since mid 2008 with numerous failures including CTs and slow (but not slow enough tapers)Have slow tapered at 10 per cent or less for years. I have liquid mirtazapine made at a compounding chemist.

Was on 1.6 ml as at 19 March 2014.
