PlasticMango: Premature Ejaculation from SSRIs?

This is probably a bit of an old topic and might be quite repetitive, so I apologize. I started taking Zoloft for about a year when I was 16 years old, then I was medication free for one year. Then at 18 I was prescribed Lexapro, which I remained on for about 8 months. I then gave up on antidepressants until I was prescribed 150 mg of Bupropion 2x's a day at 21 years old. I had discontinued that after about 7 months due to horrific panic attacks developing. I am now 22 years old and I've been on Paxil for about 7 months. I am down to 10mg from 40mg because I just can't live my life dependent on medications that have done nothing but ruin my body. Point is, I have had extremely severe premature ejaculation that developed around the time I discontinued my first antidepressant at 16/17 years old. Now I feel that I am in a white and black state. On the antidepressants my libido is almost non-existent but off of them I last a very short period and it's very embarrassing. Has any research been conducted into the long-term effects on premature ejaculation when starting an antidepressant during teenage years? I feel that maybe something has become premanently disrupted and I'm afraid that I'll never return to normal. It's very frustrating.

Hello PlasticMango,

Would you like to start yourself an intro in the Introductions and Updates forum?  Then we can get to know you and hopefully help you with some discussion and information.

Welcome to s/a

Karen

Micro-tapering: four weekly 0.4% cuts, hold 4 weeks (struggling with symptoms).

8 month hold.

2017 Micro-tapering: four weekly 1% cuts, hold 4 weeks (symptoms almost non-existent).

2020 Still micro-tapering. Just over 2/3 of the way off effexor. Minimal symptoms, - and sleeping well.
Supplements: Fish oil, vitamin C, iron, oat-straw tea, nettle tea.

2023 Now on 7 micro-beads of Effexor. Minimal symptoms but much more time needed between drops.

Welcome PlasticMango,

I moved your introductory post to a Journal thread of its own. This way more people will notice it, and you can maintain your own journal.

Are you tapering Paxil at the moment or holding at 10mg?

It would be great if you would put your drug and withdrawal history in your signature. Doing this helps people understand your context, it appears below each of your posts. Here are instructions for how to do it:

I'm not a doctor.  My comments are not medical advise. These are my opinions based on my own experience and what I've learned. Please discuss your situation with a medical practitioner who has knowledge of tapering and withdrawal...if you are lucky enough to find one.

My Introduction Thread

Full Drug and Withdrawal History

Brief Summary

Several SSRIs for 13 years starting 1997 (for mild to moderate partly situational anxiety) Xanax PRN ~ Various other drugs over the years for side effects

2 month 'taper' off Lexapro 2010

Short acute withdrawal, followed by 2 -3 months of improvement then delayed protracted withdrawal

DX ADHD followed by several years of stimulants and other drugs trying to manage increasing symptoms

Failed reinstatement of Lexapro and trial of Prozac (became suicidal)

May 2013 Found SA, learned about withdrawal, stopped taking drugs...healing begins.

Protracted withdrawal, with a very sensitized nervous system, slowly recovering as time passes

Supplements which have helped: Vitamin C, Magnesium, Taurine

Bad reactions: Many supplements but mostly fish oil and Vitamin D

June 2016 - Started daily juicing, mostly vegetables and lots of greens.

Aug 2016 - Oct 2016 Best window ever, felt almost completely recovered

Oct 2016 -Symptoms returned - bad days and less bad days.

April 2018 - No windows, but significant improvement, it feels like permanent full recovery is close.

Sexual dysfunction can persist or start after stopping a SSRI treatment, it is called PSSD (Post-SSRI Sexual Dysfunction).

Uh huh, I was in that boat too. Gained a few minutes over the past few months as compared to seconds lol. It eventually gets better.

Paxil start September 2003 due to Fluoroquinolone adverse reaction that I wish doc. knew what it was. 10mg. most of the time with a few short runs of 20mg. FAST tapered 3 times and finally hit poop out or a reaction to nsaid's in Nov.2013. Started a 10% taper Jan. 2014 and have been ok until Sept 14 and went through a short hell. Now plodding through and looking for the light with unrelenting insomnia and pain, fog, loss of interests....<p>12/20/14 - .8mg.

1/01/15 - .75 mg.

1/15/15 - .42 mg. better sleep now, hope it continues...

2/11-15 - .25 mg. doing really good!! 2 weeks feel 85% of old me!

3/17/15 .14 mg. Knee pain bad!

4/07/15 .05 mg. this is so small now that I am estimating and just licking it off palm small as a "."

4/13/15 NOTHING !!!! Took my last little micro dose on 4/12/15.

Hello I have the same problem as you, has it come back over time?

Hello everyone, I was on seroplex 10mg in October 2019 for over a year and then on brintellix from March to September for maybe 8 months. I made several attempts to stop abruptly then I resumed the treatment of brintellix recently for a few weeks because it was too difficult to stop.

Symptom when stopped: premature ejaculation, ejaculation with less orgasm. Severe insomnia, transient headaches, sensitivity to noise and light.

Last intake of brintellix 5mg: Saturday, September 11, 2021
