I did a search of the forum and got nothing, so sorry if this is mentioned elsewhere

I'm looking for any studies done on the long term effects of taking lamictal for a psych diagnosis such as for bipolar disorder

I was given lamitcal and took it for about a year I think... my memory is fried so I dont know, I'd need to get a print out from the drug store to find out (which I am going to try to do!)

anyway can anyone point me in the right direction? thanks

  • pysch med history: 1974 @ age 18 to Oct 2017 (approx 43 yrs total)
  •  Drug list: stelazine, haldol, elavil, lithium, zoloft, celexa, lexapro(doses as high as 40mgs), klonopin, ambien, seroquel(high doses), depakote, zyprexa, lamictal- plus brief trials of dozens of other psych meds over the years
  • started lexapro 2002, dose varied from 20mgs to 40mgs. First attempt to get off it was 2007- WD symptoms were mistaken for "relapse".
  •  2013 too fast taper down to 5mg but WD forced me back to 20mgs
  •  June of 2105, tapered again too rapidly to 2.5mgs by Dec 2015. Found SA, held at 2.5 mgs til May 2016 when I foolishly "jumped off". felt ok until  Sept, then acute WD hit!!  reinstated at 0.3mgs in Oct. 2106
  • Tapered off to zero by  Oct. 2017 Doing very well.

  • Jan. 2020 feel 100% healed, peaceful and content

my opinion, we cannot be sure it is one year lamictal who fried your memory, because all meds fry memory, all meds deteriorate memory, looking your signature, even you never took lamictal, i am sure your memory would be deteriorate, they all poison nerves...

espescially lamictal, i never took, but my memory is also partial fried, with time better...and i took only paxil paroxetine and citalopram celexa

and the symptomes appear months after taken , so it could be the med before lamictal...

for anxiety

12 years paxil - cold turkey 1,5 month - switch celexa 1 year taper; total 13 years on brain meds

67 years old - 9 years  med free

in protracted withdrawal

rigidity standing and walking, dryness gougerot-szoegren, sleep deteriorate,

function as have a lack of nerves, improving have been very little

Hi

I've been on lamactil for about 3 and a hAlf years, maybe 4, for a depression which wasn't really responding to lexapro (although the doc kept me on that just for safe measure- you can never have too many drugs in your system!). Like you, my memory is shot and I firmly blame the lamactil. in fact, it's got worse over time. from what research I did through the Internet, I didn't find much about it being used psychiatrically, mainly epilepsy. However, I suppose it doesn't matter what you have taken it for if you are purely interested in its long term effects?

I think it affects a lot of people cognitively, memory issues, losing words. I'm far less articulate that I used to be. But then maybe that's age. I'm truly hoping things will improve when I get off the stuff.

Hope you manage to find the research you're looking for, if it's out there.

Hi Ali,

I don't know of any specific research on Lamictal and memory but I have fumbled for words while I have been on Lamictal.   I experience it when I am wd but right now I am holding and focusing on my Remeron wd.

I do go to the Beyond Meds page and read about the effects of Lamictal- not too often because I don't want to scare myself into imagining a bad wd.   Monica was on a high dose of Lamictal 400mgs for a long time.

Here is the link; http://beyondmeds.com/?s=lamictal

Thanks Hibari. I've dipped in and read a couple of bits. Like you, I can only manage a little negativity at a time, as otherwise I get very agitated and make rash decisions to come off meds. I think all we should focus on is the fact we are working our way off, however slowly. As there will be a proportion of people who don't get long term symptoms, I'm going to focus on best case scenario and hope that includes us. In the meantime, I'm relying on the fish oil to protect my brain!!

I was on Lamictal for under a year. It had profound effects on my memory and comprehension. I got better when I stopped taking it. I was taking it with Wellbutrin. It was a bit of a hypomanic effect, but I didn't do anything reckless or stupid. Well, maybe I did. I went to see the ADHD doctor whose crazy prescribing precipitated the destruction of the foundations of my life: long term relationship, retirement savings, and re-born career as a freelancer ghostwriter and a foot in the door in photography for a botanical books publisher all gone-gone.

I haven't heard of Lamictal having persistent long term effects, but if someone feels like it does for them,  I wouldn't argue.

I'm optimistic for everyone until proven otherwise. I'm three years out from the heavy drugging, and my memory continues to improve. I'd stopped even trying to remember things, and now I'm getting bold about it again. I have moments when I noticed that I remembered something, and it's like "Hey! I summoned up a memory and it was helpful." Without my memory I felt like I was moving straight ahead through a black tunnel (time). No context. With better memory abilities, I feel more like I am in the swim of things, with people, places and things all around me that I can interact with again. Life had faded from view and now it's fading back in?

2009: Cancer hospital said I had adjustment disorder because I thought they were doing it wrong. Their headshrinker prescribed Effexor, and my life set on a new course. I didn't know what was ahead, like a passenger on Disneyland's Matterhorn, smiling and waving as it climbs...clink, clink, clink.

2010: Post surgical accidental Effexor discontinuation by nurses, masked by intravenous Dilaudid. (The car is balanced at the top of the track.) I get home, pop a Vicodin, and ...

Whooosh...down, down, down, down, down...goes the trajectory of my life, up goes my mood and tendency to think everything is a good idea.
2012: After the bipolar jig was up, now a walking bag of unrelated symptoms, I went crazy on Daytrana (the Ritalin skin patch by Noven), because ADHD was a perfect fit for a bag of unrelated symptoms. I was prescribed Effexor for the nervousness of it, and things got neurological. An EEG showed enough activity to warrant an epilepsy diagnosis rather than non-epileptic ("psychogenic") seizures.

:o 2013-2014: Quit everything and got worse. I probably went through DAWS: dopamine agonist withdrawal syndrome. I drank to not feel, but I felt a lot: dread, fear, regret, grief: an utter sense of total loss of everything worth breathing about, for almost two years.

I was not suicidal but I wanted to be dead, at least dead to the experience of my own brain and body.

2015: I  began to recover after adding virgin coconut oil and organic grass-fed fed butter to a cup of instant coffee in the morning.

I did it hoping for mental acuity and better memory. After ten days of that, I was much better, mood-wise. Approximately neutral.

And, I experienced drowsiness. I could sleep. Not exactly happy, I did 30 days on Wellbutrin, because it had done me no harm in the past.

I don't have the DAWS mood or state of mind. It never feel like doing anything if it means standing up.

In fact, I don't especially like moving. I'm a brain with a beanbag body.

I just found this forum and am excited for the support, thank you to everyone!

I am currently working through withdrawal from Lamictal. I have been on the drug for a little over 10 years, at 200 mg/day (100 mg AM, 100 mg PM). I do not have a close relationship with my P-Doc, only saw his annually and never needed any adjustments. Originally prescribed lamictal for severe depression when several combinations of natural supplements, herbs, chinese medicine, etc., did not help. Originally, lamictal gave me my life back.

After many years of personal growth work, deep therapy, meditation and a very healthy lifestyle, I decided I could go off lamictal. I never wanted to be on a medication, knowing the toxic effects it has on the CNS, and ultimately on my life.

I tapered down too quickly, from 200 mg in May 2015 to zero in November 2015. I tapered down by increments of 25 mg feeling fine as I reduced the dosage. I was completely off of it in November 2015, and quickly started feeling despondent, extreme fatigue, depression, body stiffness and aches, lack of drive and overall just not well. I thought time would heal and that within a month or two or three, it would be out of my system and I would be fine. However, the opposite has proved true. I am an Entrepreneur with a wonderful business that needs to be nurtured to get off the ground. I have a business partner, and her patience with my extremely low energy is running out. Finally, as this past week has been extremely difficult and my energy shows no sign of increasing, I went back to taking 25 mg at night. I plan to stay on that for a month or more, then taper by 5 mg at a time. Has anyone had an experience of being completely drug fee and then going back on a low dose in order to taper much more gradually? I am ready to do anything it takes to function again.

My P-Doc does not have experience in tapering off lamictal, my original P-Doc retired long ago. Wondering about getting a consultation with an MD who specializes in psychotic drug withdrawal, specifically Lamictal. Has anyone done that, or know of anyone who has? I am taking supplements to support my brain (Dr. Hyla Cass' Brain Recover Program AM and PM formulas), adrenals (AdrenALL), and liver (Liver Detox and Support).

Thank you for any help you can offer!

I was given lamitcal and took it for about a year I think... my memory is fried so I dont know, I'd need to get a print out from the drug store to find out (which I am going to try to do!)

anyway can anyone point me in the right direction? thanks

Hi catnapt, I don't know if you are still looking for confirmation that this drug causes memory issues but if so here it is:

http://www.rxlist.com/lamictal-drug/side-effects-interactions.htm

Adverse reactions that occurred with a frequency of less than 5% and greater than 2% of patients receiving LAMICTAL and numerically more frequent than placebo were:

...Nervous System: Amnesia, ataxia, depression, hypesthesia, libido increase, decreased reflexes, increased reflexes, nystagmus, irritability, suicidal ideation.

I am not a medical professional and nothing I say is a medical opinion or meant to be medical advice, please seek a competent and trusted medical professional to consult for all medical decisions.

Many people on this site have had the experience you mention-going back on their medication at a lower dose when their taper has been too fast.  I'm not sure how to direct you to find those stories but maybe if you type in reinstatement or up-dosing you will find the threads.

I am also tapering off Lamictal along with another drug.  As you know it is a powerful drug and one of the many common complaints is how tired it makes people feel when they are withdrawing.  I am exhausted after I make a cut and have to rest in the afternoon.   I too am in my own business, which does give me some leeway but I understand your concern.  I truly believe their is healing after Lamictal.
