UK Members -- Write MPs about Drug Dependency Progress in the UK.....

Marmite

Recommended Posts

Progress at last! The Council for Evidence Based Psychiatry in the UK have pushed through the following actions to tackle dependency on antidepressants, benzos, z-drugs and psycho-active prescribed drugs.

The British Medical Association have been looking into the effects of prescribed drugs with various agencies and the following article explains the actions that were agreed in February 2016 to tackle this problem.  The chief actions outlined are listed below:

Following the meeting, the BMA has issued a document which details the agreed areas for action.  These include:

  • calling for a national helpline for prescribed drug dependence
  • writing to NICE proposing a review of the effects of withdrawal from psychoactive prescribed drugs
  • establishing a working group with the aim of establishing a multi-disciplinary quality standard guideline for prescribing
  • undertaking a pilot of the best way to fund and commission local specialist prescribed drug withdrawal services
  • lobbying for changes to the Prescribing Safety Assessment, part of the Year 1 medical curriculum
  • incorporating patient experiences within relevant training programmes
  • proposing areas of additional research to funding organisations, to include research on withdrawal and the harms associated with prescribed drug dependence

It is very encouraging and I hope that all UK SA members will contact their local MPs to offer their stories, peer support (if they are able) and endorsement of these initiatives.

Wish I lived there..

WARNING THIS WILL BE LONG
Had a car accident in 85
Codeine was the pain med when I was release from hosp continuous use till 89
Given PROZAC by a specialist to help with nerve pain in my leg 89-90 not sure which year
Was not told a thing about it being a psych med thought it was a pain killer no info about psych side effects I went nuts had hallucinations. As I had a head injury and was diagnosed with a concussion in 85 I was sent to a head injury clinic in 1990 five years after the accident. I don't think they knew I had been on prozac I did not think it a big deal and never did finish the bottle of pills. I had tests of course lots of them. Was put into a pain clinic and given amitriptyline which stopped the withdrawal but had many side effects. But I could sleep something I had not done in a very long time the pain lessened. My mother got cancer in 94 they switched my meds to Zoloft to help deal with this pressure as I was her main care giver she died in 96. I stopped zoloft in 96 had withdrawal was put on paxil went nutty quit it ct put on resperidol quit it ct had withdrawal was put on Effexor... 2years later celexa was added 20mg then increased to 40mg huge personality change went wild. Did too fast taper off Celexa 05 as I felt unwell for a long time prior... quit Effexor 150mg ct 07 found ****** 8 months into withdrawal learned some things was banned from there in 08 have kept learning since. there is really not enough room here to put my history but I have a lot of opinions about a lot of things especially any of the drugs mentioned above.
One thing I would like to add here is this tidbit ALL OPIATES INCREASE SEROTONIN it is not a huge jump to being in chronic pain to being put on an ssri/snri and opiates will affect your antidepressants and your thinking.

As I do not update much I will put my quit date Nov. 17 2007 I quit Effexor cold turkey.

I'm up for it too - just need a bit of time to work out how to go about it - my cognitive functioning is not that good so it can take me a while to think things through !! Will take a look at change.org website In the meantime.

First contact with psychiatrist in Jan 1997.

Since then given "diagnoses" of: postnatal depression, severe recurrent depression, bipolar disorder, dependent personality disorder & emotionally unstable personality disorder.

Treatment: various cocktails of psych meds including: imipramine, lithium, venlafaxine, mirtazapine, quetiapine, chlorpromazine, depot injections of clopixol, zolpidem and as a last resort ECT.

Taken off mirtazapine, venlafaxine and lithium cold turkey whilst inpatient on acute psychiatric ward in Nov 2013.

Challenging & agonising withdrawal process but getting easier now.

Human again !!

Hi Marmite,

I didn't get any response to my email to CEP. I was wondering if you had been more successful?

Maybe we should do this in every country if they have to pay out for treatment on top of disability maybe the pay out they get from suing pharma will no longer be worth allowing them to do business the way they have been ..

but maybe I am kidding myself too....

it is a nice thought. in the UK there are telly ads now for no win no fee claims against medical negligence. I wonder if prescribing of ADs without proper consent would be able to be claimed on though. I doubt it very much as it is hard to prove and for me it was such a long time ago.

Below is a petition for Secretary of State for Health Jeremy Hunt in the UK (920 out of 1000 have been signed):

https://www.change.org/p/secretary-of-state-for-health-jeremy-hunt-make-pharmaceutical-firms-help-users-who-want-to-stop-taking-anxiety-depression-drugs

What we want

We want the Pharmaceutical manufacturers to produce “drug tapering kits” which provide the most commonly prescribed medications in decreasing doses over a period of time.

We need tapering kits to help the millions of users of psychoactive pharmaceutical drugs because:
◦Many tablets are only available in increments that are so large that they are useless for gradual lowering (tapering) of the dose.
◦Liquid forms for some medications are available but tend to be hugely expensive and therefore the NHS will not provide them.
◦Pill cutting is, at best, a hit and miss affair.
◦Many doctors and psychiatrists confuse the symptoms of withdrawal with a return of the symptoms that the tablet was originally prescribed for.
◦These kits would save a significant amount of time for General Practitioners, Psychiatrists and Community Mental Health teams.
◦These kits would help users of psychiatric medications stop taking them safely and in a controlled fashion, giving them control over their drug intake.

The pharmaceutical companies are already set up to manufacture massive quantities of these drugs, therefore it cannot be a huge additional cost to manufacture tablets of decreasing dosages. At most this is likely to be a tiny fraction of a percentage of profit but would win a huge amount of public confidence that the Pharmaceutical firms have their customers safety at heart.

This petition will be delivered to:Secretary of State for Health
Jeremy Hunt

Petition update:

A very exciting development!

from James Moore
Caldicot, United Kingdom

15 Oct 2016 — I have some exciting (and slightly terrifying!) news. The Victoria Derbyshire show is shortly going to run an item looking at the experiences that people have taking antidepressants, including the difficulties some users have when attempting to stop. As part of this, all being well, I will have a short live interview about this petition.

This is such a great opportunity to gain some much needed awareness of the struggles that so many have using these drugs. If you can find the time please watch and, even better, contact the show to share your experiences. We need to demonstrate how many are suffering in silence, unable to get the help they need, this will make a huge difference and a real impact. Let’s light up their Twitter feed like a Christmas tree!

The broadcast details are:
- The Victoria Derbyshire show
- BBC 2 and BBC news channel
