I was just counting the number of years I was on any kind of ssri or snri. I've been on effexor for almost 13 years. Prior to that I had tried ssri's on and off since I was 17 years old including zoloft and paxil. I stopped during pregnancies (which I now realize the reason for a lot of struggles during those times). Total makes 22 years. Will that mean my cns will have a harder if not impossible time gaining it's own balance?

May 12th 2016 took last bead of effexor. 8 month taper.  Bridge = prozac 5mg, 300mg Lithium

May 31st took last of prozac. Lithium 300 mg, estrogen patch 150, magnesium.

June 14th reinstated 1mg Prozac due to intolerable emotional distress. Cont with lithium 300mg, 150 magnesium, re added omega 3, cont estrogen patch. June 15-july 5th had marked improvement of emotional wd symptoms, likely due to the reinstatement. July 5th intense emotional symptoms returned.

July 15 decreased 50 mg of lithium to see if it improved low heart rate.

July 19th - increased prozac to 1.5mg.

July 22 marked improvement of emotional symptoms...again, likely due to increase of prozac. However sudden agitation developed so decreased back down to 1.25mg prozac. Realizing increasing dose is dangerous because of these adverse effects and also seeing that wave is inevitable regardless of reinstatement.

Continuing 250 lithium, 1.25mg prozac, estrogen.

Oct 31st - continued 250 lithium, 1 mg prozac, estrogen patch.

Jan 2018  - off of prozac (bridge) as of Dec 2017.  Starting to taper Lithium 250 mg.  Will do 10% per month.

May 2018 - lithium 115mg.  Still having waves but they aren’t as bad.  However, I really struggle with emotional symptoms about 1 week after a cut.

dec 2018- 80mg lithium.  Tapering 1 mg per week since last June.  Symptoms improving overall but still very sensitive to light, sound, social stimulation and I cry a lot.

March 2019 - 65 mg lithium.  Still tapering 1mg per week.  Jan 2021- down to 4 mg lithium (get it compounded). Reinstated 5 mg Prozac. Jan 2023- withdraw 5mg prozac over one month Feb 20th 2023- reinstated 1mg Prozac. Still taking 4 mg lithium.

Hi Help777--  It just means you have to take it very slow and easy and let your system restore itself in its own time.  Your system doesn't want the changes the drugs have made and given time it will correct itself, but you can't rush it.  That's the wonderful thing about out brains, they're self repairing. I was on paxil nonstop for 18 years when I started my taper. Four and a half years later (apx. 23 years on the drug) I'm not back 100% but I'm several thousand times better than I was at the start of my taper.  It's a frustratingly long slow process, but it does work. I would much rather take it slow and easy and maintain a bit of control then to go too fast and suffer the consequences for the same amount of time.

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks.  The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Final Dose 0.016mg.     Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017

I agree with Brass.  Like you, I'd been on psych meds probably 20 years.  12 years of Effexor and somehow my brain was supposed to snap to after a month long taper?  Well, I simply didn't know ANYTHING about how these drugs work or the remodeling they cause the nervous system to undertake in their presence.  Having reinstated a fairly high dose (again, not yet having found SA), I now realize the reason I was fixed by such a high dose was because my nervous system hadn't gotten that far repairing itself in those 10 months I was in protracted withdrawal!  So, gentle nudging with a very slow taper has left me feeling better than I felt in ages, really.  I'm at 66% of the minimum therapeutic dosage (at which receptor occupancy is 80%) and doing just fine!

As slow as I must go, I realize that any amount less is better than still being on the amount I started from for the rest of my life :-)  Any amount of healing is better than none at all.

Started ADs back around 1995 after bad break-up, starting with Prozac.  Switched to Wellbutrin, and then to Effexor in 2002
Effexor XR 2002-2014 up to 225 mg at one point, down to 37.5 mg towards end but back up to 75 mg in 2014; now realize I had W/D as I dropped down, memory very poor about history.  Extreme emotions, poor concentration as I stepped back down, didn't connect the dots!
Summer 2014 reduced to 0 very quickly, was sick of anhedonia/sexual dysfunction due to meds, depression never controlled if not worse. Didn't recognize WD since symptoms built slowly (thought I had ADD! and menopausal on top of it), starting with severe sweats, very bad cog-fog and memory issues, culminating in weight loss, severe anxiety and depression, panic, severe apathy and insomnia by eight months off.  Saw p-doc who put me on Remeron, increased from 7.5 mg/day to 37.5 mg by May 22, 2015; still doing very badly though able to sleep.

June 1. 2015 Reinstated Effexor XR 37.5 mg, Remeron dropped to 30 mg PM. Immediate relief of symptoms, like nothing had ever happened!  Joined SA and began on advice of friend who recognized it was WD all along! Began tapering in July 2015.

Been tapering both meds ever since, focusing on one more than the other or doing no more than 5% of each per month.

12 mg Effexor and 5.8 mg Remeron (mirtazapine SolTabs to make a solution with OraPlus) as of 5/4/2017

Update 3/14/18: 2.9 mg Remeron and 6 mg Effexor; 6/10/18:  2.6 mg Remeron and 4.9 mg Effexor

Thank you, both. I guess what I struggle with is that The reason that I wanted off the meds is because I was experiencing emotional problems. I realize I cannot rush withdrawal yet it's the very meds that are causing me problems.

Can I start a new topic about how to stop ruminating thoughts? I perseverate ove things I am upset about, and my thoughts very quickly snowball into making assumptions and decisions that cause me and those around me unneeded upset.

Wasn't sure wheher to ask that here or start a new topic to ask others how they stop being overly sensitive and rumination.

With thanks,

Help . Before you start a new topic , just google S.A. and then your topic . It has probably been covered. However ,  this is the best place to voice any concerns.

Also , this is a great  place to ask questions .

The emotions that you are going through, are completely normal, in withdrawal .

Many SSRI's and SSNRI's over 20 years. Zoloft for 7 years followed by Effexor, Lexapro, Prozac, Cymbalta, Celexa, Pristiq, Valdoxan, Mianserin and more - on and off. No tapering. Cold turkey off Valdoxan - end of May 2014

One thing I would like to add here is this tidbit ALL OPIATES INCREASE SEROTONIN it is not a huge jump to being in chronic pain to being put on an ssri/snri and opiates will affect your antidepressants and your thinking.

As I do not update much I will put my quit date Nov. 17 2007 I quit Effexor cold turkey.

I have another question...once I have recovered from wd is it possible I actually have a mood disorder? What if I always have these cycles of irritability and anger and depression? Do organic mood disorders exist? And if so are there meds that are advised instead of ad use?

Instead of looking to drugs, I'd be much more inclined to go the route of diet, counseling, CBT, stepping up lots of good self-care practises, learning to listen in to your body and respond to what it needs - anything but drugs ;).

I'm sure you've seen this page:  http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/1112-non-drug-techniques-to-cope-with-emotional-symptoms/page-2

I don't know if organic mood disorders exist.  My instinct tells me that we live in a stressful world and so there may well be times in our lives when we don't cope as well as other times.  Times of drawing inward, and nourishing our inner self.  Accepting these times, responding to them, gets me through life more easily than fighting them and trying to maintain 'life as normal' all the time.

After a lifetime of struggling with depression etc I now firmly believe that I can get through whatever might come along - because I have my 'nest' of self-care stuff, I have built up a good bunch of supportive friends, and so on.  People are actually so strong - but we forget, or we come to believe otherwise.  Start nourishing that strong self of yours now, and see what happens.

2010  Fluoxetine 20mg.  2011  Escitalopram 20mg.  2013 Tapered badly and destabilised CNS.  Effexor 150mg.

2015 Begin using info at SurvivingAntidepressants.  Cut 10% - bad w/d 2 months, held 1 month.

Micro-tapering: four weekly 0.4% cuts, hold 4 weeks (struggling with symptoms).

8 month hold.

2017 Micro-tapering: four weekly 1% cuts, hold 4 weeks (symptoms almost non-existent).

2020 Still micro-tapering. Just over 2/3 of the way off effexor. Minimal symptoms, - and sleeping well.
Supplements: Fish oil, vitamin C, iron, oat-straw tea, nettle tea.

2023 Now on 7 micro-beads of Effexor. Minimal symptoms but much more time needed between drops.

About mood disorders it is hard to say there are many people myself included put on these drug for pain or other non psych issues who certainly were easily able to get a dx of psych problem after being on the drug what came first the chicken or the egg.. is a very good question.

Another notable thing is there seems to be an order for some people in how the dx changes after the first Ad... anxiety maybe drug induced to quitting and getting a depression dx... there are a mixed bag depending on how you react to the drug many people are dx as bipolar or mixed bag ...

over the 18 years I was drugged I had them all ending with post traumatic stress disorder...

A rose by any other name is still a rose and non drug treatment and undiagnosed  or misdiagnosed withdrawal I am sure are common and likely the bigger part of my issues and many others.

The non drug treatment may be initially surviving wd and after wd should you get to an after would likely be the same as the tricks and skills that help one survive wd would mostly likely be the same that would treat a mood disorder... I think at the end you would be at least part way educated and established in how to deal with a mood issue if there were one... how would you ever know it was not just protracted wd... I don't think you could tell the difference... maybe somebody else here could enlighten us to the difference as I don't see one.

Thank you, bdtd. I agree... I guess at the end of the day it might not matter what caused what. What's important is finding ways ro cope with the symptoms we are having and avoiding meds and other influences that can cause us more trouble. Since your quit date of 2007 with effexor how would you describe your improvement with symotoms overall?

I have now dropped the effexor and will start to taper the prozac very slowly.

I thought I did a good job explaining to my family physician about this info I am learning. He seemed compassionate about my witgdrawal symptoms and supportive of a medical leave from work. I just picked up the disability forms that I had to have him complete for work and I was very surprised to see his explanation of the medical leave....bipolar affective disorder II (anxiety and depression) medication change, is what he wrote. How do I not let his mindset discourage me. My psychiatrist shares his outlook on this.

Have you read Anatomy of an Epidemic?  It may help you to understand why you can completely disregard such ignorant opinions as your doctor gave you.

2010  Fluoxetine 20mg.  2011  Escitalopram 20mg.  2013 Tapered badly and destabilised CNS.  Effexor 150mg.

2015 Begin using info at SurvivingAntidepressants.  Cut 10% - bad w/d 2 months, held 1 month.

Micro-tapering: four weekly 0.4% cuts, hold 4 weeks (struggling with symptoms).

8 month hold.

2017 Micro-tapering: four weekly 1% cuts, hold 4 weeks (symptoms almost non-existent).

2020 Still micro-tapering. Just over 2/3 of the way off effexor. Minimal symptoms, - and sleeping well.
Supplements: Fish oil, vitamin C, iron, oat-straw tea, nettle tea.

2023 Now on 7 micro-beads of Effexor. Minimal symptoms but much more time needed between drops.

you may find that link helpful

Years ago before we knew much of anything about these drugs docs were taught they could bring out hidden bi polar... more like side effects but whatever this is what was then not so much now.

At the end of the day we can try to educate our doctors if they don't know and want to know there are resources here to help you try that if you want to. For now you got what you needed off work with pay I know it is insulting but how much energy do you want to apply to this topic just now?  It is your choice.  He can be dealt with later that is true and maybe you will have to find a new doc that to is your choice or you could be too strong with him now and find yourself without a doc... it is not a nice situation to be in but many of us have been there and go the tshirt.

Some had such bad unhearing docs they seen them just to get the drugs to do a taper and never said a work to the doc about the taper...just let them talk as it is hard to teach anyone a thing if they already know everything and some docs won't listen.

We expect them to know they expect they do know some can't believe they don't know some maybe receptive to information.. my doc wasn't but we did not have all the great resources then that we have now.

Good luck with this and I wish  you peace

I was reading your thread today and I would like to ask if you had side effects from starting prozac?  I asked if you read the prozac bridge because I added to that thread long ago that I had such a horrid time SAR to prozac that I would never recommend anyone use it as a bridge.  I stand by that today and I wonder if you noticed a down turn when adding it.

Hi btdt,

I have so many symptoms right now I can't separate wd from the effexor from possible side effects from prozac. I started prozac shortly after my effexor taper. As you know, I misunderstood the prozac bridge length of time that is recommended. Last week I took my last bead of effexor. I am now withdrawing from the prozac. I am an emotional and physical mess however so not sure how fast to taper the prozac. If i had to guess i would say the prozac has increased some angry episodes and agitation. What side effects did you have with prozac?

May 12th 2016 took last bead of effexor. 8 month taper.  Bridge = prozac 5mg, 300mg Lithium

When you quit effexor in 2007 did you have severe crying bouts and panic attacks with ocd thoughts and anger? If so do you remember how long the most intense symptoms lasted?

Prozac was my first drug and I had a severe adverse reaction I was on it a wk or two.  So my experience has completely jaded me towards prozac hence my comments here to you may be inappropriate I thought twice about it before mentioning it and my jaded perspective is why I asked if you read about the bridge here at SA cause if you had you already read what I felt about the bridge... but I may well be wrong as we are all different... it works for some.  It may well work for you so I should not jade you towards it especially since your in it now.

It is a good idea going forward to keep some sort of journal on your experience in wd so you can see what effect changes cause.  It is really difficult to tell when there are many drugs involved.  I know I was on more then one drug too so it is hard to tell.  We do the best we can then hold on and learn ways to deal with it all.  The self care pages are the place to be now to build your tool box so you have ideas of what works for you when you need them.

BTW the mood instability the last years on Effexor may well have been tolerance ... which means your taking the drug and having wd effects anyway.  I think I was in tolerance a couple years before I stopped Effexor and I had a lot of physical symptoms too many cold bugs tired ect I could not cope. I had an ovarian cysts or a couple and had an ovary removed it just got worse after that.

It will get better in time take your taper very slowly and gage you symptoms as you go.

I wish you peace

Symptoms change all the time new ones seem to come about the time you get use to the old ones.

Thank you, both. I desperately want to rid myself of these meds. I added the prozac to bridge and I took too long to get off the effexor that now my body has both prozac and the effexor to wean, in addition to the lthium. Again, i started kithium to help me wean the effexor and now i am in an even bigger mess. I cant believe i am taking so many meds. 2 years ago i had a full hysterectomy at age 38 because i thought i had pmdd. Now i think it was the 12 years of effexor that was messing with my moods. I feel ashamed of myself that i underwent a full hysterectomy for probably nothing. I am so depressed. My hope is gone. My kids dont deserve having a mom who is depressed so much. I am so angry. I dont even know ehat is withdrawal and what might just be a very messed up woman. I am desperate to get rid of these meds. I have created the biggest mess with all if tgese meds anf my health. I am embarrassed ashamed and alone. I cant stand being in my own skin. I dont know what to do.

Part of this picking on ourselves seems to be wd related try to be kind to yourself as you heal.

WARNING THIS WILL BE LONG
Had a car accident in 85
Codeine was the pain med when I was release from hosp continuous use till 89
Given PROZAC by a specialist to help with nerve pain in my leg 89-90 not sure which year
Was not told a thing about it being a psych med thought it was a pain killer no info about psych side effects I went nuts had hallucinations. As I had a head injury and was diagnosed with a concussion in 85 I was sent to a head injury clinic in 1990 five years after the accident. I don't think they knew I had been on prozac I did not think it a big deal and never did finish the bottle of pills. I had tests of course lots of them. Was put into a pain clinic and given amitriptyline which stopped the withdrawal but had many side effects. But I could sleep something I had not done in a very long time the pain lessened. My mother got cancer in 94 they switched my meds to Zoloft to help deal with this pressure as I was her main care giver she died in 96. I stopped zoloft in 96 had withdrawal was put on paxil went nutty quit it ct put on resperidol quit it ct had withdrawal was put on Effexor... 2years later celexa was added 20mg then increased to 40mg huge personality change went wild. Did too fast taper off Celexa 05 as I felt unwell for a long time prior... quit Effexor 150mg ct 07 found ****** 8 months into withdrawal learned some things was banned from there in 08 have kept learning since. there is really not enough room here to put my history but I have a lot of opinions about a lot of things especially any of the drugs mentioned above.

Thank you for the links. I am wondering if my crying bouts are cortisol spikes. It comes in suddenly and so intensely. I have been crying for 6 days straight. My body and eyes hurt from so much crying. I thought a rib would break or at times I thought I was going to vomit because my crying is so out of control. I shake and rock back and forth and wring my hands i have noticed. It can last for an hour. Then start up again a few hours later. Evenings are the worst. No amount of cbt, deep breathing or exercise seem to help. Can anyone suggest how long the intensity of these crying spells last for after last dose. And if theres anything to stop it from occurring?

I've read this link many times this week. What is not standing out to me are any indications of how long the intensity of crying and panic lasts for, for other as well as some strategies that help.

I don't know if it is just luck or a good sign of things to come but I am enjoying 3 hours so far of a calm nervous system for the first time in 6 days of intense sobbing, panic and rage. My last dose of effexor was 9 days ago. Please please please let this feeling only increase with frequency and duration. I don't know what I did to bring this calmness about because I keep using the same strategies with seemingly unsuccess in the past week.

Just needed to post this somewhat positive note, as all my other ones were filled with all my anguish and pain. Thanks for listening, everyone here, and for all your info and advice.

May you each experience increasing peace.

I had that very short 3 hr window and now back to a wave. 9th day of crying, rage, thrashing and sobbing. Do I reinstate or wait a bit longer in hopes that the windows will cme agan soon. I should've known better, I can hear all of you saying, as I had the info to go slower than I did. I just really believed the meds were causing me big problems.
