Dear friends.

I am right now in a very big of a situation. My second daughter is coming into this world due in two weeks and i am as much as a wreck as evere.

I had used xanax for on and off very small doses but after two weeks of continuous 0.25 mg usage it seems i got hooked and started to have a lot of anxiety and panic attack. Before that i have had twice problems  but i managed to pass them with personal power and sort of other CBT. This time was a bit harder.

I Somehow stabilized at start of April on 6 MG Bromazepam and 20 MG Anmitryptiline. After the stabilization i started tapering and failed the first time. The amount went big again up to 6 MG and after a period of 10 days i developed some kind of depression even though i managed to stay at work. Doctor prescribed Remeron 15 MG and i was a bit reluctant to take but i am in a very difficult position right now as my wife is giving birth to my second kid within two weeks and apart from that i have a loan to pay and could not afford to be off so i agreed with the doc to start it.

Psychologicaly in the beginning i felt good because with Remeron help i started to make big jumps on the Benzo (Bromazepam) and within 3 weeks i have gone from 6 MG to 0.75 Mg currently.

I am still scared though because i have never been on an antidepressant before and there are horror stories all around web about all types of them as well.

This is the fourth week i am taking Remeron and is not helping to much with sleep some nights due to my worry thoughts, some more it has side effects (high cholesterol and triglycerides are a trend in my family, me no exception to that) and i am only 40 Years old. There are days when i really feel very bad and hopeless in this situation but somehow manage to push it forward.

I need help whether i am doing the right thing and in case yes after i am done with bromazepam most probably in 3-4 days how long should i wait to start tapering Remeron....huh.gif

One mor thing friends... i have never been depressed for all of my life. OKKKK... i have had difficult moments or periods here and there... but only mild situations. This time the doctore tried to cure me with the reason of my fears.... and i think she failed miserably. Anyway.... i was scared out of proportion after three weeks of xanax and some drinking sessions and all went berserk.

Give me some opinions on what should i do???!! Should i wait some days and try taper fast Remeron??? (i will be on them total 4 weeks this tuesday). Maybe i am one of those persons who by chance do not have withdrawals...

All the best and keep it tight.... WE WILL PREVAIL.... 🙂

Welcome, Santino.

You are now taking 0.75mg bromazepam, 20mg amitriptyline, and how much Remeron? What time of day do you take each?

If I were you, I would stop tapering bromazepam right now, stay at 0.75mg, until this is sorted out.

Please put ALL the drugs you take in the Drug Interactions Checker http://www.drugs.com/drug_interactions.html
and copy and paste the results in this topic.

Altostrata.... Thanks for your message. Actually I am not taking Amitriptiline. Stopped that C/T the moment I started Remeron. So now I am on 0.75 Bromazepam and 15 mg Remeron. I take both doses at night. I tapered Bromazepam fast and seems to not have too much dependency on that one. Let me know what should I do next... I tried inserting the ne names in the drug interaction but Bromazepam is not marketed in US so I can not find it there. It is a benzo actually and I think I can drop it with no much effects right now.

I have been two days with only 0.25 mg Bromazepam at night with no effect. It is a very tiny dose around 0.02 Xanax so I can drop it. Want to know when can I start taper Remeron. Can I make big jumps as I am only 4 weeks on it....?? And see how it goes.

Hi, Santino.

Welcome to the forum from me, too. And congratulations on your second daughter. You definitely have a lot on your plate right now.

But please listen to what Alto just posted about not making any more cuts right now.

We need more information that will helps us guide you in your tapers:

  • How long have you been on benzos? From your posts, you said it was only three weeks for Xanax. But how long have you been taking Bromazepam? This is important because long time benzo use necessitates a slow and careful taper to prevent some really severe symptoms that can take years to resolve. It only takes two weeks for some people to develop a dependency. It sounds like your depression is connected to your benzo use, which is your mind and body's way of telling you that you do have a dependency. A slow taper can help reduce these types of symptoms.

You mentioned using alcohol in your first post. Please note that alcohol acts on GABA receptors in a similar way as benzos, so it's best not to combine them.

  • What are your current symptoms? You're trying to come off your meds quickly, as if you don't have a lot of symptoms. But many times symptoms won't appear right away, and by the time they do, it may be too late to updose or reinstate, so it's important to carefully track your symptoms and let your mind and body dictate the speed of tapering.

Here are some links to get you started. I'm including a link to the members-only benzo forum. I would encourage you to start an introduction there  for details on benzo withdrawal:

Shep thanks for your message. I was under Bromazepam for 2 months already up to 6 Mg for two - three weeks. 3 weeks ago I started Remeron and started tapering fast the Bromazepam. So in three weeks I have gone from 6 Mg to 0.25 mg only at night with not much trouble. I am just recently introduced to psych meds because I have been able to solve my issues with the power of mind or supplements. Even this time my problem was more psychological. I got scared of being three weeks in low doses of 0.25 per day of Xanax and the situation went out of control. I had two panic attacks and I made the mistake of going to a really good psychiater. After some trial and error I ended up with the rregimen I am now. Momentarily last two days 0.25 Mg Bromazepam and 15 MG Remeron. I feel OK for the moment.... But does not want to prolong my usage of Remeron tooo much in order to avoid dependency. What should be the best course of action right now...?? 0.25 mg Bromazepam is a very tiny dose and with the time I have been on them I think can be dropped with no side effects. In that case I will be left with 15 MG Remeron of three and a half weeks of usage....

Thanks for the additional information, Santino.

Please go ahead and do an introduction on the Members-only Benzo Forum

We have a really great benzo moderator who checks in on that forum, as well as our benzo-wise members who can give you more specific advice tailored to benzos.

You do have a lot of other factors going on - growing family, work, a loan to pay off - all of which would cause anxiety and sleepless nights, with or without these drugs. But if you do have a real benzo dependency, going off too fast could really cause long term problems.

Please also be very careful with alcohol. You mentioned using that in your first post - benzos and alcohol both act on GABA receptors, so this could have caused some of the panic and anxiety.

I would hold on tapering anything further until you get a response from the benzo forum.

There are some good links to read for more information in the meantime:

The 2002 Ashton Manual - http://www.benzo.org...anual/index.htm

The April, 7 2011 Ashton Manual Supplement is at http://www.benzo.org.uk/ashsupp11.htm

Please keep in mind it's not just the length of time you are taking these drugs, but it's about the damage that the drugs can cause. This can be while you're on them, but damage can also be caused by the speed of coming off. This is a thread explaining this - How Psychiatric Drugs Remodel Your Brain

Shep thanks again for your answer buddy. I wanted to say that with alcohol I have parted since two months and I was never a heavy drinker. My dose of 0.25 Bromazepam is equivalent to around 0.06 something Xanax... and with my current taper of three weeks I think I can jump off that with no problem. Remeron is maskinng the WD of benzo in case any. I am worried how long should I continue with Remeron 15 mg...? Is it better that after I drop Bromazepam I try going to a lower dose of Remeron...???

Santino, your comment that Remeron is "masking" the benzo withdrawal is concerning. From what I've experienced personally and from what I've seen in the past two years on benzo and SSRI web forums, when a drug is "masking" another drug, once that second drug is removed, a lot of chaos can happen. You may very well crash at the speed you're going.

I would stop tapering the benzo and see where you're at.  Many times there is a delay in withdrawal from psychiatric drugs and this withdrawal syndrome may not show up for weeks or even months after coming off. The best way to prevent this is to go slowly and keep track of your symptoms.

Coming off an AD right after tapering a benzo is never recommended because benzo withdrawal is notorious for completely destabilizing the CNS, making the next medication taper that much harder. It's best to wait until you're stable. Please note what Alto just posted about taking notes of your symptoms. This is extremely important as your mind and body should dictate the speed of your taper. Your wife is going to need you to be functional to help out with the baby. You have so many good reasons to get this right.

Please carefully read over the links listed above and ask plenty of questions.

Hi Shep. Thanks a lot for your comment buddy. Why I am going fast with Bromazepam is that I have taken it for only two months and I do not thing that I have much dependency on that during this time. Anyway you are right I need to be careful with the speed. At the dose I am currently of 0.3 Mg I may jump according to Ashton Manual who puts the jumping dose at 0.5. Now my main concern is Remeron. Even though it is giving effect already (I am currently at 15 Mg) I do not feel comfortable at all psychologically. My depression was caused by wrong medications and trial and error approach of my Pdoc. So now in case I need a antidepressant I would feel comfortable psychologically to try ST John's wort. The idea of withdrawals from Mirtazapine is not letting me function properly and I am risking a lot right now in terms of sanity, work and family. I will discuss this option with my doctor this week but I wanted your opinion as well in the matter. I could stabilise my self on St'johns and then after one year or more I can start to wean that off slowly. Does it sound OK as a plan...??? St'johns should be easier to withdraw I think in comparison to Mirtazapine and for now you are right that I need a cushion in order to stabilise my self coming off benzo.

Please carefully read over this thread about St. John's Wort:

St. John's Wort is contraindicated while you're taking an antidepressant. It looks like you're thinking about adding it after your come off your AD, but please note other complicating factors such as dietary restrictions.  St. John's Wort is a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). If you are taking it, you may have odd reactions to a substance called tyramine in some foods. You may wish to go on a restricted diet for MAOIs http://www.mayoclini...is/faq-20058035

We've had members taking St. John's Wort who have reported withdrawal symptoms and as you mentioned, it will need to be tapered.

I'm unclear what you mean by "in case I need an antidepressant". Are you referring to psychiatry's chemical imbalance theory? Please note that this is based on faulty data. Please read this thread for more information:

G'day Santino -

I confess to being confused by your drugs.

Please complete your signature, so that everywhere you post, we can quickly see your history:

when you went on a drug, when you came off, how much drug you were on, and how quickly you came off.

You came off amitryptaline Cold Turkey when you started Remeron.

You came off the bromazepam way too fast.  We here at SA are seeing a potential train wreck with all of theses changes - the train track can only change so many degrees for certain speeds.  You have been changing too much, too fast.

Please stop making changes until we can see what is happening to the track!

I agree totally with Shep - St John's Wort is a potent drug.  Things can get much worse - we are trying to make it better. Please stop the train now, so we can try and adjust the track.  You may need to hold your dosages still for a long time if you want to be stable and work and parent your beautiful daughter.

Please resist the urge to make a bunch of changes.  It is destabilizing (and there is that speeding train headed for a sharp curve!), and you need to be stable, and well.

You have enough links to look at, so I will only give you one.  It is a very important one, essential for helping us help you:

Please confirm your drugs, dosages and dates in your signature.

Jan Carol and Shep. Thanks a lot for your messages. I will try to edit later my profile with the details.

I am making a description here though:

I have used Xanax only rescue doses of 0.125 mg in case of anxiety let's say once twice per month.

In March due to stress at work and some other things used it morning and evening same dose for 10 days. Then talked with a Pdoc and she suggested 0.25 x 2 times per day as I got a big fear of addiction to it. I could not stabilise due to the fear of benzos. It would have been easier to convince me that I did not have a dependency at that time and everything would be OK by now.

Anyway end of March I went to another Pdoc after 5 days of no good sleep and after two panic attacks at work due to my psychological fear.

The Pdoc prescribed me tranxene 5 mg and Fevarin (Prozac). I tried that first night and slept well. Next day was OK. Anyway it gave me strange reactions so I dropped it. I used to have one good day and one very depressed day. After 4 days I was prescribed 25 mg Amitriptiline... Same pattern continued one day good one day bad. The doctor added Bromazepam and after I told I had eye pressure she prescribed 6 mg Bromazepam and 25 mg Amitriptiline. It seemed I started to stabilise and I started cutting Bromazepam every four days. I went up to 3 mg and then got hit by a wall. I send to my doctor a message and she said continue with 6 mg Bromazepam and 25 Amitriptiline. After another 10 days I went to her in an depressed state due to the blowi had while lowering Bromazepam and she said we can drop Amitriptiline and start 15 mg Remeron. This was around 26 days ago. So I continued lowering Bromazepam and I am currently at 0.3 mg and Remeron 15 mg. Anyway I have a big psychological fear of these medicines and I don't think this kind of treatment will be good for me. I have never been depressed in my life...OK I have had lows or mild things when I was 30 years old and once 2 years ago but that's it. I could cope well with my Anxiety good all the time. I just fucked up big time with my Xanax usage in March and some how I convinced myself I was dependent....

So this is my story guys... Please tell me I Still have Hope... It is becoming like a nightmare for me. Even Remeron is keeping me stable for the moment I do not want to be dependent on it for functioning. I want my Life Back... Do I have a chance...???!!!

Due to considering St John's wort a lesser evil than Mirtazapine I thought it would be good to suggest to my Pdoc... As at least that will keep me calm psychologically. Right now even though I have gone down fast with Bromazepam I have no problems it seems in term of anxiety and sleep.

Waiting your opinions....

All the best.... Santino

Santino, it's very possible that after taking Xanax morning and evening for 10 days, you had already become dependent on it. The pdoc simply prescribed a dosage to stabilize you -- on Xanax.

It would have been easier to convince me that I did not have a dependency at that time and everything would be OK by now.
Anyway end of March I went to another Pdoc after 5 days of no good sleep and after two panic attacks at work due to my psychological fear.

You were, in fact, dependent on Xanax. If you skipped a dose, you might have gotten panic attacks. After taking them for a while, benzos can also go paradoxical -- rather than causing you to be calm or sleep, they cause anxiety and keep you awake.

I don't know what the antidepressants might do for you, except the pdoc might have been hoping they would keep you quiet. Those strange reactions may have been Xanax withdrawal (if you were off Xanax then) or more paradoxical reactions from the Xanax, or adverse reactions to the new drugs.

The doctor added Bromazepam and after I told I had eye pressure she prescribed 6 mg Bromazepam and 25 mg Amitriptiline. It seemed I started to stabilise and I started cutting Bromazepam every four days.

You "stabilized" because you now had a sufficient amount of benzo in your body.

My suspicion is that you are physiologically dependent on the benzo and your rapid tapering might get you into trouble. That is why we are suggesting you stop reducing right now, to give your nervous system a chance to catch up with the drug changes.

Please do not plan to immediately reduce the amitriptyline. You may also be dependent on that. Piling antidepressant withdrawal on top of benzo withdrawal syndrome is a very, very difficult situation. We don't want to see that happen.

This is not medical advice. Discuss any decisions about your medical care with a knowledgeable medical practitioner.

Hi Santino. Thanks for filling in your signature. It does make it so much easier if we can see your details easily.

Now I am calm and do not have anxiety but I am very sad due to the fact that I am getting stuck on the Remeron. Am really sad about that as currently I am not able to see a way out of my situation.

It's totally understandable that you would have regret about going on these drugs. You are not alone there as we all have to live with that however there is lots of hope as this is temporary. You will most likely find as your system settles down and you start to feel like yourself again that as you taper slowly and carefully that your quality of life will reappear and you will feel happiness again.

You have a lot to look forward to , with the upcoming birth of your baby and while I understand you're not in the place you would optimally like to be, never the less if you can try to live in this moment as it is now without projecting fear into the future, you should be able to get through this.

It can be so hard when our brains have been " chemically hijacked", as it feels as if we're not in control anymore but this will eventually recede into the background and normal everyday life will take over again to the point where this " blip " will only be a bad memory and you will just move on.

If you are calm and have little anxiety, then you are already miles ahead and that should stand you in good stead to get through this a little easier than some. Having said that some meditation, deep breathing & yoga is always helpful and good life skills to practice. Self -care is of paramount importance for you right now  and will hopefully make all the difference to your recovery in the long term . You can turn this around to your advantage and come out of it better than before. You will have the skills and knowledge to lead a fulfilled drug -free life.

This perspective can be more empowering in my opinion. I hope it helps.

HI AliG

Thanks for you reassuring message.

Anyway i wanted to know what are the consequences right now in my situation. It seems that i am not still stable right now. I have good days but i also have bad days where i get obsessed with the fear of medicine and somehow i am not able to concentrate on my daily life and work. In those days i usually smoke a lot and worry all the time about my situation so i end up reading in internet about withdrawal and stuff and i get more scared.

Maybe i should stop reading for a while and concentrate on my daily activities. Somehow Remeron is not giving tooo much of an effect apart from sleeping other then that i am still going to work and most probably i am in a worse situation then before, regarding my mental situation.

As i have been quite short term only 3 months on these psych med.... do you think there is a fast way out...???? Or i have to accept the situation and start to taper slowly maybe after one month when the withdrawals from benzo will have subsided.... ( in case any).

Santino.  The Remeron is helping you sleep and that's such an advantage in this process. I have the withdrawal insomnia , and it's not pleasant although it's slowly improving.

Unfortunately, there is no fast way out and if you hold for a while to let your nervous system settle and catch up to the changes and then do a slow and steady taper you will be in the best position possible. If you taper carefully you can enjoy a high quality of life , as you go . There are quite a few here who whilst tapering have held down jobs and maintained a happy and healthy life.

Acceptance is a large part of this and it will go more smoothly for you if you can learn this skill.

Thanks for your message.

Anyway i am still very worried seeing that a lot of people have a very hard time to come off Remeron. In this way would it be better for me to ask the doctor to shift to Saint John's Wort after a while as it is natural and easier to wean off..???

I am really dreading this situation and the worry does not let my brain to relax. Including here the other work and day stress my life is becoming really difficult.... :-(

Santino, people don't have the same reaction to going off the same drug.  People range from having no symptoms, mild, moderate to severe.  My symptoms at this point in tapering Cymbalta are minimal and I'm now taking 30% of the dose I took for 4 years. I did have symptoms earlier this year when I tried to taper by skipping doses, as advised by my doctor.

Please do what you can to let go of worrying about YOUR withdrawal from Remeron.  Knowing what you know about withdrawal, you'll do small % reductions and hold at the new dose for the 4 weeks recommended here at survivingantidepressants.  You've got what you need to have the best possible withdrawal for you.

Dear Friends...

I was yesterday at the Pdoc... it seems i do not like too much her lately but nothing i can do about that... :-)

She was claiming that i have to continue with Remeron for at least 6 months and then i can start to lower doses every three months. I have just dropped from two days my Bromazepam to 0 mg currently and so far just a bit of anxiety here and there but not much trouble. Anyway i do not feel very comfortable with the idea of 6 months usage of Remeron. After that it will be very hard to get off that.

I suggested to her that if I am stable we could start lowering early when we will understand that i will have no more WD from my short term benzo usage (around 2 months and a half). She said OK but i do not know whether she was really OK about that.

What do you think friends...????

Will i be able to start tapering earlier than one month??? Or I should wait more...???

Just bear in mind that on the mean time I have to work.... :-( and this whole thing is worrying me so much.

Santino - dropping a benzo like Bromazepam quickly is not a good idea. Benzos can create dependency or addiction in less than 2 weeks; for some people that happens within days. Altostrata suggested that you stay at the same dose of the bromazepam for now to avoid complicating your situation and symptoms.

It's very clear that you want to stop taking these drugs - bromazepam and Remeron.  You've already stopped some drugs suddenly (Xanax & amitryptilene under doctor's advice) and cut the bromazepam 50% in 10 days; you got bad results.  Those symptoms are a sign that your central nervous has already adapted to the drugs.

The safest way for you to go off the drugs is to reduce one drug at a time in small amounts and to allow time (3-4 weeks) between reductions.

It's uncomfortable to be on the drugs. It's discouraging to think about being on the drugs for a long taper. We want off NOW. It's not fair that we have to deal with this. The reality for you -- and for me -- is that we get to choose: stay on the drugs, taper slowly off them to minimize withdrawal suffering, or jump off them and almost certainly suffer.  I'm picking to taper slowly.  What's your choice?

This is not medical advice. Discuss any decisions about your medical care with a knowledgeable medical practitioner.

Scally thanks a lot for your answer. The thing is I have never been severely depressed during all my life. I just took some Xanax in order to sleep due to some simple OCD stuff and now I am stuck in this situation. I feel tired and don't know whether I have the force to survive. Alto is right but I can not risk longer time on Bromazepam. Today was my first day off and I survived. Went to work, performed as usual and now down my place to watch first match of Euro 2016. I will be careful this days and will not play with Remeron dose in order to stabilize. Most probably wait for one month, see how I will be at that stage and then decide the course of action.

Santino, You're very fortunate to have never experienced depression! It doesn't matter why you were prescribed and took these drugs; the potential for withdrawal problems is the same. I hope that your jump to 0 bromazepam causes you no suffering or discomfort!

I would think that waiting 3 weeks is a good idea, a month would be better.  You need to see if you have any withdrawal reactions from cutting the bromazepam.

Dear friends

Thanks for the assistance offered so far. It is day 5th with no Bromazepam and I feel somehow normal. I went last week to my PDoc and she said that in order to feel the antidepressant effects I should go to 30 mg of Remeron which I rejected. She classified my fears of Antidepressants and medication as delusions and I could need other medication for that which I also rejected. Now I want to know with my short term usage of Mirtazapine (Remeron) do I still have a chance to go off these...??? My doctor accepted the idea that after one month I could start tapering under her supervision and lower the dose every 2-3 months. Anyway she did not mention anything about the percentage of reductions but she left an appointment for me in July to see how the things are going until then....

Santino . There seems to be a conflict between what your doctor is saying and what we are advising. Its difficult sometimes but if you can stick to the plan it should go well .

Hi

AliG

Thanks a lot for your comment. I know the situation is complicated and right now I am at a crossroad not able to take the right decision. I am not following blindly the doctor on this one as I already rejected her idea of increasing Remeron. These days I seem to be stabilizing on 15 mg of Remeron so now I want to know what is the course of action according to you guys. Should I wait 2-3 weeks and then start tapering by 10% rule or in case I have been short term on Remeron I can try bigger cuts and increase my dosage of Magnesium, Fish Oil and Vitamins B-D to counter any side effects of dosage reduction.... Let me know plssss...

Santino,

It's probably best to wait before cutting the Remeron.  Let your brain & body adjust to the removal of bromazepam. Remember to "keep it slow"

You're familiar with the SA recommendation about 10% cuts. Have you read the threads that discuss the reasons for 10% reductions? And the reasons for holding for a few weeks after making a change? Even if you have read them, re-reading the first posts could be a good reminder:

Keep it slow. Keep it simple. Keep it stable.
Why taper by 10% of my dosage?

Whatever you choose to do with the Remeron, please don't make changes at the same time with both Remeron and your supplements-- especially don't increase the supplements until after a week on the new dose. If you react to the reduction, you'll know that it is the likely cause.  Should you change supplements and the Remeron, it will likely be difficult to assess what is causing a symptom.

This is not medical advice. Discuss any decisions about your medical care with a knowledgeable medical practitioner.
1997-1999 Effexor; 2002-2005 Effexor XR 37.5 mg linear taper, dropping same #beads/week with bad results

Cymbalta 60 mg 2012 - 2015; 2016: 20 mg to 7 mg exact doses and dates in this post; 2017: 6.3 mg to  0.0 mg  Aug. 12; details here
