Citizen Science & Pharma?

Recommended Posts

Citizen science ... is this part of what we do here?  I think it is.  I have heard of different ideas about funding research for various science problems.

There are specific disorders some drug induced that have fashioned support groups to do fund raising for research.  The first one I heard of involved the hair loss drug their support site is here:

http://www.pfsfoundation.org/

statement on the site "The Post-Finasteride Syndrome Foundation is dedicated to funding research on the characterization, underlying biologic mechanisms and treatments of post-finasteride syndrome (PFS). A secondary goal is to increase global public awareness of PFS.

Often life-altering, PFS is characterized by devastating sexual, neurological, and physical side effects that persist in men who have taken the 5-alpha reductase type II enzyme inhibitor finasteride.

Finasteride is prescribed for the treatment of hair loss under the brand name Propecia (and generics) and for the treatment of enlarged prostate under the brand name Proscar (and generics).

Long ago I suggested maybe we could do the same thing... it did not get much interest.  A lot of work for sure and who is up to it.

from this site today I noticed this.

"U.S. National Institutes of Health Adds PFS to Genetic and Rare Diseases Info Center

This sounds a lot like AD wd... PSSD depression ect... post drug use.

http://www.pfsfoundation.org/published-research/

I can't find the bit where the people joined together and raised money I know it is there or here already as I posted it a long time ago... as search may bring it up if your interested..or it may not as I can't find what I have posted on SA in the past... just a fact.

I do not see a list of sponsors such as pharma sponsors that I find at other sites... so I can't say who sponsors the research exactly.

There is however another site for psoriasis made up of Citizen scientists same sort of idea I assume... that has receive corporate sponsorship... ect... the list is long....

https://www.psoriasis.org/sites/default/files/2015_annualreport_for_web.pdf

I don't know what to make of this... I really don't. They are receiving estate gifts... private donations... listed as beneficiaries of wills.. insurance ... gift annuities...

There is obviously a great deal of trust involved with this process.... It kind of creeps me out.. and it could be all above board but I am not so fast to jump on the band wagon when I see pharma involved... maybe I am too jaded to move forward.  I realise that is my problem or asset... the future will tell.

The odd think about this is Citizen Science is changing how research is done... really this is a huge change... is it corruption proof I have my doubts... have the laws kept up with this new trend .. I have no idea.

It would seem to me that pharma being the forward thinking group of investors they have to be... with tons of money to pay salaries has hit on the growing Citizen movement and is trying to capitalise on its existence... by making nice.... and giving cash.  Can a leopard change the spots... I doubt it but I am harsh... not as harsh as they have been on me... mind you but I am harsh and doubt it.

I think we need to be aware of this new trend ... and learn something about it ... for our own best interests... it may be there is something useful here for us should it be done carefully with a keen eye... or maybe not.  It is news that is for sure.

I have a link about this I will add in the next post as this is a lot to consider. There is an off chance pharma is ready to do things the citizen way... I do not see them at the drug first site where their product caused the damage maybe that would be a conflict of interest to their share holders.

How citizen scientists first got their wings

Citizen scientists tend to lack the credentials of a university professor, but that doesn't mean becoming a citizen scientist is easy. "To be a citizen scientist, a person must possess an extraordinary ability to learn analytical techniques while possessing a solid foundation in physics, chemistry and mathematics," said Mike Adams, a pioneering citizen scientist who runs his own forensic food lab. "The search for scientific truth as an independent scientist is by no means an easy path, but it is an infinitely honorable and fulfilling one nonetheless."

I guess that is not most of us we may have a few but sure could use some more.

an example:

Holding government agencies accountable with citizen science

Government agencies need to be held accountable by citizen scientists more so than ever before, especially the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). "As science is the search for truth, only citizen scientists who are free from the corruption and financial influence of unethical corporations have the unique qualifications to pursue that search for truth without being compromised," explained Adams.

This sentiment is particularly true with respect to the EPA's handling of the Animas River. In August 2015, EPA contractors accidentally breached a dam, which flooded the Animas River with deadly toxins. The contaminants spread all the way to New Mexico, Arizona and Utah.

The EPA tried to cover up the spill, hoping that no one would notice that the river's water had taken on a mustard orange color from the toxic slew. Once the incident became manifestly apparent, the EPA intentionally underestimated the severity of the disaster. In particular, the EPA was forced to acknowledge that 3 million gallons of noxious sludge had been released into the river, which was three times greater than the initial estimates the agency provided.

It is precisely because of the chicanery tactics of the EPA and other government agenciesthat citizen scientists are most needed. The EPA knew that the water was contaminated, but refused to tell the public. Once the public knew, the agency fudged the numbers. If the actions of the EPA were made by an oil company, environmental activists would demand the imprisonment of the institution's CEO. Since the EPA is a government funded agency, however, a blind eye is cast at these lies and cover-ups.

Fortunately, this is becoming easier in wake of the cyber era. The internet has breathed new life into the citizen sciencecommunity. Now, anyone with a library card and internet access has the world's best education at their fingertips.

The rise of citizen science: Mike Adams reveals why private citizens produce more honest science than governments or corporations

(NaturalNews) You don't have to be an academic to be a scientist. Citizen science is growing globally. Communities with an amateur interest in science have helped classify galaxies, detect signs of disease, andunearth toxic metals in our food. But why is citizen science on the rise? To answer that question, no single answer will suffice.

Although there is no definitive term to describe "citizen science," simply put, citizen science includes a vast range of projects involving volunteer participation. According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, citizen science is "a project in which volunteers partner with scientists to answer real-world questions."

How citizen scientists first got their wingsCitizen scientists tend to lack the credentials of a university professor, but that doesn't mean becoming a citizen scientist is easy.

Although citizen science has grown in popularity in recent years, it isn't exactly new. One of the first citizen science projects involved bird watchers with the National Audubon Society. Members documented the date, time, location, environmental conditions and nesting behaviors of birds. The data collected by citizen scientists was essential in determining if a species of bird was common in a designated area, as well as if there were changes in home range or a shift in bird population.

Since the early days of bird watching, citizen science has made rapid progress. In 2015, professional citizen science organizations were created in Australia, Europe and the United States. That same year, the first Citizen Science Association Conference was held, with another scheduled for February 2017. Furthermore, in the United States, the Crowdsourcing and Citizen Science Act of 2015 was proposed to encourage federal agencies to use citizen scientists.

Holding government agencies accountable with citizen scienceGovernment agencies need to be held accountable by citizen scientists more so than ever before, especially the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Citizens with the scientific training and means can no longer passively watch as the EPA allows the children of America to be poisoned. Fortunately, this is becoming easier in wake of the cyber era. The internet has breathed new life into the citizen sciencecommunity. Now, anyone with a library card and internet access has the world's best education at their fingertips. Alternative media outlets like Natural News have lifted the public's health consciousness to new heights. People want to know what goes into their food and how it is made, which requires independent citizen scientists.

The future of citizen science

The future of citizen science is bright. As technologies develop and the internet becomes more accessible, citizen scientists will be able to participate in a broader range of projects. Based on current trends, an unprecedented number of articles published in 2016 will have to acknowledge the pivotal role citizen scientists played in conducting that research.

The most common field of study that citizen scientists contribute to is biology. Approximately 72 percent of all articles which citizen scientists contribute to fall within the realm of biology. Citizen science articles related to biology are being published at a faster clip than any other scientific discipline.

Critics of citizen science insist that real science cannot be conducted outside of a university. Fortunately, science is universal, meaning no one has a monopoly on its truth. "The work of citizen scientists like myself can be replicated and confirmed by any other competent laboratory in the world, if only they had any interest in doing so," Adams insists. The scientific methods and instrumentation used in Adams' lab pump out a steady stream of work that meets and beats university standards. Refusing to acknowledge scientific work just because it falls outside the towers of academia isn't just arrogant; it's anti-intellectual.

maybe we could raise some loot and hire this guys... I know this is a bit off topic from the original title... still in the same galaxy tho I tend to wander...

What do you make of this new phenomena?

Could we make it work for us?

Hair loss link at the end is the video by Glenmullen speaking to the research pharma was mandated to do on antidepressants... years ago research that has never been done.  or you can watch it right here if you like Sept 20 1991 Lilly was to do the research.... no gold standard... yet re suicide risk.

For some reason we cannot get even the basics covered.

Could we not do our own study with the SA members? Perhaps a questionnaire about people's experiences of withdrawal. We could collate the data and make all sorts of graphs and charts and things. Who knows, it might spark the interest of some proper researchers.

2001: 20mg paroxetine
2003-2014: Switched between 20mg citalopram and 10mg escitalopram with several failed CT's
2015: Jan/ Feb-very fast taper off citalopram; Mar/ Apr-crashed; 23 Apr-reinstated 5mg; 05 May-updosed to 10mg; 15 Jul-started taper; Aug-9.0mg; Sep-8.1mg; Oct-7.6mg; Nov-6.8mg; Dec-6.2mg
2016: Jan-5.7mg; Feb-5.2mg; Mar-5.0mg;  Apr-4.5mg; May-4.05mg; Jun-3.65mg; Jul-3.3mg; Aug-2.95mg; 04Sep-2.65mg; 25Sep-2.4mg; 23Oct-2.15mg; 13Nov-1.95mg; 04Dec-1.75mg; 25Dec-1.55mg.
2017: 08Jan-1.4mg; 22Jan-1.25mg; 12Feb-1.1mg; 26Feb-1.0mg; 05Mar-0.9mg; 15Mar-0.8mg; 22Mar-0.7mg; 02Apr-0.6; 09Apr-0.5mg; 16Apr-0.4mg; 23Apr-0.3; 03May-0.2mg; 10May-0.1mg

We could if somebody knew how to do it.. charts and graphs and all ... I am sure some here know how I could do it before this but not on a computer... I am all but illiterate on computers... now I am doing good to find my way home from the bus... there are some here who have the gift it would have to go thru Alto first of course...

If there was enough interest I think she may go alone with it I know she has plenty of work to do already .. worth a shot I guess... if there were interest...lets see.

Is there anything along these lines that you can do Dan?

I can do spreadsheet and charts, nothing too fancy mind. I know for a fact that there are some really smart people on here, who could do a much better job at it than me.

The facebook SA group gave me the idea. They used to have a poll on their site that asked "what are your worst symptoms?" It's not on there now. Thought it was a good idea. Anxiety and insomnia came top.

I reckon if we had a look through the sciencey section there would be plenty of studies that could give us some ideas.

I think because SA is globally accessed it would be a great resource to start with what would be surprising about the study... questions asked could make it different than any other study .. a survey done by people who actually live it may bring a new light to what questions get asked hence bring forth some surprising results... a lot of studies are just for a specific area of wd.. or for a specific geographical area...

I was just reading how some here are disappointed they cannot do the study in the US... I think the will is here... now what question do you think should be on a SA survey.

ps I did send a email to Alto about this but forgot to put the link to this thread in ... so I came across once again as a complete air head.. I am in some kind of unrelenting wave.. during it I have has little energy or brain power everything is behind a wall of gauze .. not likely the best time for me to suggest starting a survey... but not everybody is in this right now and I would help doing anything I can for as long as I can...

I am going to resend her the link... see if it flies or not.

Did too fast taper off Celexa 05 as I felt unwell for a long time prior... quit Effexor 150mg ct 07 found ****** 8 months into withdrawal learned some things was banned from there in 08 have kept learning since. there is really not enough room here to put my history but I have a lot of opinions about a lot of things especially any of the drugs mentioned above.
One thing I would like to add here is this tidbit ALL OPIATES INCREASE SEROTONIN it is not a huge jump to being in chronic pain to being put on an ssri/snri and opiates will affect your antidepressants and your thinking.

As I do not update much I will put my quit date Nov. 17 2007 I quit Effexor cold turkey.

WARNING THIS WILL BE LONG
Had a car accident in 85
Codeine was the pain med when I was release from hosp continuous use till 89
Given PROZAC by a specialist to help with nerve pain in my leg 89-90 not sure which year
Was not told a thing about it being a psych med thought it was a pain killer no info about psych side effects I went nuts had hallucinations. As I had a head injury and was diagnosed with a concussion in 85 I was sent to a head injury clinic in 1990 five years after the accident. I don't think they knew I had been on prozac I did not think it a big deal and never did finish the bottle of pills. I had tests of course lots of them. Was put into a pain clinic and given amitriptyline which stopped the withdrawal but had many side effects. But I could sleep something I had not done in a very long time the pain lessened.
