You will get a feel of how your body is reacting to tapering and be able to adjust as necessary. It will take a long time to taper, but is well worth taking the time to go very slowly, especially after many years. Your brain has functioned around the drug for so many years that it needs to be sneaked away very carefully so your brain and nervous system can adjust to the lowering doses. Lots of people have gone too fast and ended up back on the drug and being ill with withdrawal . The total time recovering and restarting a taper is longer than the slow taper would have been! ( I did this too ) I'm glad that you are here preparing to taper and not in withdrawal from a too fast taper recommended by doctors. We ask all our members to fill out their signature with recent drug history, which drugs are taken and doses. You can find a link to instructions on how to do that in my signature. **I am not a medical professional, if in doubt please consult a doctor with withdrawal knowledge. Different drugs occasionally (mostly benzos) 1976 - 1981 (no problem) 1993 - 2002 in and out of hospital. every type of drug + ECT. Staring with seroxat 2002 effexor. Tapered March 2012 to March 2013, ending with 5 beads. Withdrawal April 2013 . Reinstated 5 beads reduced to 4 beads May 2013 Restarted taper Nov 2013 OFF EFFEXOR Feb 2015 Tapered atenolol and omeprazole Dec 2013 - May 2014 Tapering tramadol, Feb 2015 100mg , March 2015 50mg July 2017 30mg. May 15 2018 25mg Taking fish oil, magnesium, B12, folic acid, bilberry eyebright for eye pressure. Kia kaha Karen 2010 Fluoxetine 20mg. 2011 Escitalopram 20mg. 2013 Tapered badly and destabilised CNS. Effexor 150mg. 2015 Begin using info at SurvivingAntidepressants. Cut 10% - bad w/d 2 months, held 1 month. Micro-tapering: four weekly 0.4% cuts, hold 4 weeks (struggling with symptoms). 8 month hold. 2017 Micro-tapering: four weekly 1% cuts, hold 4 weeks (symptoms almost non-existent). 2020 Still micro-tapering. Just over 2/3 of the way off effexor. Minimal symptoms, - and sleeping well. Supplements: Fish oil, vitamin C, iron, oat-straw tea, nettle tea. 2023 December - Now on 5 micro-beads Effexor. Minimal symptoms but much more time needed between drops. Symptoms begin to increase. 2024 April - Updosed to 6 microbeads - immediate increase in symptoms for 4 days. Decreased to 5 microbeads. You can get off this drug safely. I reckon you should check out moderator Brassmonkey's path to freedom. He's done brilliantly keeping his job in the process. Please consider writing a complaint letter to CARM and Pharmac should you feel you have not been informed of any issues with this drug or been harmed or kept an addict by stealth. 18 yrs is a long time you will need to go slow follow the Brassmonkey. welcome nz11 Thought for the day: Lets stand up, and let’s speak out , together. Over two decades later, the number of antidepressant prescriptions a year is slightly more than the number of people in the Western world. Most (nine out of 10) prescriptions are for patients who faced difficulties on stopping, equating to about a tenth of the population. These patients are often advised to continue treatment because their difficulties indicate they need ongoing treatment, just as a person with diabetes needs insulin. Healy 2015 I believe the ssri era will soon stand as one of the most shameful in the history of medicine.
