Hello all! I guess I am here for the same reason everyone else is, for help, advice and support in my tapering journey. I have many, many questions and experiences to share but rather than typing it all here, I will just do my intro here and continue the rest of my posts in other categories. I'll start from the beginning.

Facts about me

  • I am almost 21
  • I have a psychiatric service dog
  • I love all things art
  • I used to be a lyrical, ballet, and hip-hop dancer
  • I love animals
  • I am biracial (half African American and half Caucasian)
  • I have curly hair

I believe I genetically already had anxiety issues, but I do think something ignited them. I was a normal child, but when I was 12 years old, I got a vaccination called Gardisil. I can not know for sure if this vaccination is what sparked my anxiety, but due to the circumstances, I think it is very likely that it did. A: this vaccination was not fully researched at the time I received it and if you do research on it, it has had terrible effects on many, many people. B: My anxiety issues started immediately after I received it. The anxiety I experienced was EXTREME. I found random things to be anxious about and got 'stuck' on them. It was all I would think about. This obsession lead to OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder). Which despite what you have seen on TV is a serious disorder that does NOT always half to do with cleaning, neatness or tightness. It can come in many forms. Anyway, by the time I was 14, I was full blown OCD, with everything down to my breathing.

Fast forward to when I was 18 and I finally got on medication for my anxiety disorder. I had hit rock bottom, I was in the darkest place I had ever seen and my mom noticed and made me an appointment. Initially, the medication helps SO much. I was like a normal person. After a while, the pills seemed to wear off so my doc upped the dosage. But I didn't seem to work. Soon after, I had an accident. I wont say what happened because I don't know what the rule are and it is probably very triggering. But lets just say I fell down (figuratively) really hard and I was admitted to a mental health hospital. Oh man was that an experience (but I will talk about that in a different post). While I was in the hospital, they put me on Prozac (because they LOVE to medicate in mental hospitals) which I cannot say had much of an effect on me. Maybe it made me depressed or maybe I was depressed because of what I was going through at the time. But I did something that you are never supposed to do and stopped my meds cold turkey. I then went through horrible withdraw and relapses and almost admitted myself again. My doctors were on Christmas vacation so I had to wait to get back on meds. Finally I saw my psych and was put on Lexapro. The Lexapro completely killed my anxiety, the problem is, it has killed all of my other emotions as well. I am currently tapering off of my Lexapro. I am a robot, a shell of myself and that is not okay with me so thats why i'm here.

I hope to be apart of a great group here and look forward to meeting some people going through the same thing  :)

Hi MSD and welcome to SA,

You've come to the right place for excellent information and support.

Thank you for completing your signature.  It would be helpful if you will add dates and doses to your history.  It is important to include details for ALL DRUGS (not just ADs) for the last 12-18 months and summary (month/year) for anything before that.  Please remember to update when you make a change so it remains current and can be seen at a glance.

Have you already commenced tapering Lexapro?  If so, how?  We may need to ask a few more questions later to help us get a complete picture so we can offer suggestions based on your individual situation.

Here are some links to helpful information to start with:

Before you begin tapering what you need to know

Tips for tapering off Lexapro (escitalopram)

These helped me to under SA's recommended 10% taper of the previous dose with a minimum 4 week hold to allow the brain to adapt to not getting as much of the drug:

Hello MSD,

Fellow Lexapro tapered here. I've been on it and several other drugs for many years now, but I have finally gotten down to just the Lexapro and just a small percentage of my original dosage at that. It's been a slow and sometimes painful experience, but I know I am so much better off because of it.

You have an amazing amount of wisdom and insight for someone your age. That will serve you well on this journey.

Peace, love and healing.

P.S. I love the Bible verse in your signature. It's always been one of of my favorites.

Hey MySelfDevelopment -

Welcome to SA!  Chessie has covered the bases, I just wanted to tell you about one of my heroes, Dr. Kelly Brogan.

She has just written a book called, "A Mind of Your Own" which talks about reclaiming yourself from the drugs, the diagnoses, and finding wellness on the other side.

Here are 2 articles she has written about Gardasil:

http://www.thehealthyhomeeconomist.com/gardasil-guarding-or-gutting-our-youth/

http://kellybroganmd.com/hpv-vaccine-katie-couric/

When I googled "Kelly Brogan" and "Gardasil" I found several articles - apparently it is less indicated in African American women because of different strains of HPV?  I am so sorry that this happened to you!  Even now, after the research, young women are still risking this.

Dr. Brogan has a program for preparing for taper, which I think is an important step.  So do I understand, with great relief, that you have come here before you have started tapering?  Good for you!  Let's do it right this time, and do it for good!

Here's a few of my favorite pre-tapering articles:

Preparing to Taper

Psych Central 6 Ways to Prepare for Antidepressant Withdrawal

and

Will Hall - Coming of Psychiatric Medications: A Harm Reduction Approach

You will find here, a caring, supportive community of people who do not judge or define you by any Big Book (DSM), and many people who are going through similar issues to yourself to talk to.

My suggestions are not medical advice, you are in charge of your own medical choices.

A lifetime of being prescribed antidepressants that caused problems (30 years in total). At age 35 flipped to "bipolar," but was not diagnosed for 5 years. Started my journey in Midwest United States. Crossed the Pacific for love and hope; currently living in Australia.   CT Seroquel 25 mg some time in 2013.   Tapered Reboxetine 4 mg Oct 2013 to Sept 2014 = GONE (3 years on Reboxetine).     Tapered Lithium 900 to 475 MG (alternating with the SNRI) Jan 2014 - Nov 2014, tapered Lithium 475 mg Jan 2015 -  Feb 2016 = GONE (10 years  on Lithium).  Many mistakes in dry cutting dosages were made.

Hey, another one on the journey of weaning off Lexapro.

It's been a very slow process for me, but my patience is paying off. You can check my progress on my signature.

The only thing a want to say is that Lexapro is a very powerful SSRI and even when you are only taking a bit more than a couple of mg you have to taper it slowly !

Going cold turkey from 2.0mg can be enough to make your withdrawal symptoms being a living hell.

I wish you good luck ! :)

Hi Getting Started! Thanks for the advise, Lexapro does indeed seem to be a powerful drug. I am glad I have found this site so I can get tools and advice on tapering off of it.  Thanks again and have a blessed day!

Hello all! So I was on 25 mg of Lexapro, after I told my dr I wanted to taper he took me down to 10 mg. After about a month on 10 mg, I took it down by about 7 mg. I remember thinking my taper was going well because I wasn't experiencing any symptoms. But now after a bit over a month, I am experiencing many physical syndromes. Could I have tapered too fast?

The sweetest and most gentle dog I've ever encountered was an English Bull Mastiff. Your "pup" sounds lovely!

About the speed of your taper, we would answer with an emphatic "YES, that was TOO FAST." :)

Hello scallywag! I am looking to get more advise on this but I am not sure why my topic was moved to my introduction?

Two reasons why I moved your post:

  1. This is the place to ask questions about your medications, dosages and specific symptoms. It's best to keep all your information in one place -- here in your introduction.
  2. More people will see your questions and updates here and it's best to keep all

The topics in the Symptoms and self-care forum are for discussions to understand what a symptom is and what might help with it. The topics in the Tapering forum are about specific drugs and tapering tactics.  A question about your situation is likely to get missed.

This is not medical advice. Discuss any decisions about your medical care with a knowledgeable medical practitioner.

Hi MSD,

I'd be happy to help to in anyway that I can. Just an fyi - my screen name is actually PatriciaVP. The "Silver Star" above my picture is a designation based on how many posts I've contributed. Screen names are usually above that in blue.

As far as navigating the site, apparently the best way to find a specific topic is to Google "survivingantidepressants.org" plus the topic.

Hello all! I am on Lexapro and I have noticed short term memory loss. I'll be doing something then suddenly im thinking "when did I start doing this? why am I here?" or I will be going to get something then I forget what I was getting or what I was going to do. Has anyone else had this symptom?

MSD:  Cognitive symptoms such as short-term memory difficulties are well-known in withdrawal.

Brain fog

SA's Symptoms & self-care forum has topics about the many, many symptoms that people experience in withdrawal. You can find them by using a web search tool (Google) with the search terms: survivingantidepressants +topic memory

hello MSD,

I wish you the best and will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Ben

On zoloft since 2000 for OCD/anxiety. Tapered off from 150mg to 100, 50, 25 over Dec/Jan 2015. After month n half off, began depression. Being terrified, as I never had depression before, after a few days, went back to 50mg, then five days later to 100mg. Now stable. I will stop this medication, with time and perseverance...my current taper level and timing are as follows, which includes No other Rx's, No alcohol, NEVER any illicit drugs:

84mg from October 2016

82mg from February 2017

79mg from April 2017

77mg from June 2017

75mg from July 2017
