Aelius: need to come off mirtazapine / Remeron and buspiron / Buspar

Hello all,

I`m new here. I`m also a member of benzobuddies.org forum. English is not my first language so I appologize for possible grammar mistakes in advance.
The reason I joined your forum is that I`d like to come off Mirtazapine and Buspirone asap.
I`ve been suffering from anxiety disorders since I was a teenager (I`m 37). I was diagnosed with GAD and SF. In the course of time a depression developed too, but nothing serious. In June 2013 I started to attend a psychotherapy due to social phobia which helped me much.

My issues with psych drugs started after a renal colic followed by a surgery in April 2015. In May 2015 I first saw a psychiatrist in my life. I was looking for some relief. A huge mistake! She prescribed me Zoloft 50mg. At the very first night I got a horrible panic attack which I`d never had before. This repeated next night. I went to ER next morning and got prescribed Rivotril 0.5 mg twice a day. I had to stop taking Zoloft two weeks afterwards and got another antidepressant called Trittico (trazodone) which had no positive effect. I tried to come off Rivotril after two months, tapering 1/4 of the pill every week. I had terrible withrawal symptoms. I only survived a few weeks without Rivotril and then started to get panic attacks at night. So I began to take Rivotril again, this time only 0.5 mg divided into two daily doses which was sufficient for me. It was last September. I also went to another psychiatrist`s. We`ve tried severeal meds like escitalopram, moclobemidum, venlafaxinum, olanzapin, lamotriginum, mianserin so far to help me get rid of Rivotril. Only venlafaxinum (Olwexya) helped me with my depression, but it had side effects like restless legs and bad sleep with severe sweating so I had to stop taking it after six months (at the begining of April). I made three unsuccessful attempts to come off Rivotril while I was taking Olwexya. My depression returned, I started to feel drowsy and tired all day.

I started my next taper attempt at the end of June. I took one 1/4 of the pill in the morning and 1/2 of the pill in the evening. One week later I took 1/4 of the pill both in the morning and evening. At night I had a nightmare, slept very bad. My withdrawal symptoms were: sleep disturbances, increased anxiety, social phobia, perceptual distortions, depression, poor memory and concentration, intrusive memories, weakness, fatigue, influenza-like symptoms, dizziness, nausea, diarrhoea, dry mouth, metallic taste, sweating, halucinations. My doctor said I couldn`t be phyzically addicted only on 0.5 mg. Very funny.

At the end of July when I was on dose 0.2mg, I was hospitalized because I couldn`t go to work. They stopped giving me Rivotril almost immediatelly. I didn`t want to take any new pills. I just wanted some help to survive the withdrawal. I agreed with Buspirone because I considered it the least harmful. But later they tried to give me something to beat my insomnia -  Atarax, Quetiapine, Valdoxan. Mitrazapine was the first one which alowed me to sleep. I didn`t feel any side efects besides horrible dizziness when I went to the toilet at night. Two weeks later they added Venlafaxine (California rocket fuel). I had many side effects including terrible panic attacks which I complained about. After all the meds my dizziness got worse. On September 9th I was released from the hospital.

I agreed with my doctor to stop Venlafaxine 75mg within 10 days (I took it only for three weeks). Last Wednesday when I was still on 25mg withdrawal hit me. I had vivid dreams, influenza-like symptoms, mood swings and cry spells and terrible dizziness. It`s much better now except the dizziness.

The dizziness is literaly ruining my life. I feel like I was constantly drunk. I can`t drive and I even refrain from walking. I suspect both Buspirone and Mirtazapine are the cause. I definetely can`t live with Mirtazapine because I sleep 12 hours day and still feell drowsy and tired all the time. I have no energy. They say my dizziness is somatized anxiety but I don`t believe it. Anyways, current medication has done nothing with it.

I`d like to ask for your opinion which one I should start to taper first or whether I can taper them both at the same time? I`ve been taking them only for about two months. 10% taper a month seems very slow to me. I`ve never had big issues when coming of antidepressants. What do you think? Thank you.

Hi Aelius and welcome to SA,

It will help us if you Please put your Withdrawal History in Signature.  Please give us details for the last 12-18 months of all drugs, dates, doses and how you decreased/increased.  A summary of anything before that is okay.

The more knowledgeable mods should be along soon.  Please put your drugs in the Drug Interactions Checker  and copy and paste the results in a post here.  Once we have the clear drug history and the interactions we will be better able to offer suggestions.

Aelius -- Welcome to Surviving Antidepressants (SA)

You've gone through a lot in the last 18 months. I'm sorry you've been dealing with the adverse effects of these medications with so little benefit.

Thank you for creating a medication history signature.

My best guess is that much of what you're dealing with is the result of doctors not knowing how to help you taper safely off the Rivotril in 2015. Rivotril's generic name is clonazepam, a benzodiazepene. In North America it is sold as "Klonopin."

Each time we start and stop a psychoneuroactive medication our CNS (central nervous system) makes changes to neurotransmitter cells, processes and enzymes. Because you've started and stopped so many medications in the last year, holding at your current doses may be worth considering so that your CNS has a chance to stabilize.

Because of those changes, it's hard to determine whether your symptoms now are adverse effects of the buspirone and mirtazapine, or withdrawal symptoms from your previous changes.

You are not alone in thinking that a 10% reduction from current not starting dosage per month is slow. You are right! It is slow by design to allow your CNS to keep pace with the reducing dosage of medication. These two links may help you understand the reasoning behind going slow:
How your brain responds to psychiatric drugs - aka "Brain remodeling"
Youtube video, 4 minutes: Healing from antidepressants

Although you say you've never had a hard time coming off antidepressants, that doesn't necessarily predict what will happen the next time you try.  Most times it's better to take the safe road, a slow taper, than the fast taper that risks uncomfortable or painful symptoms.

This is not medical advice. Discuss any decisions about your medical care with a knowledgeable medical practitioner.
1997-1999 Effexor; 2002-2005 Effexor XR 37.5 mg linear taper, dropping same #beads/week with bad results

Hello,

thanks for your reply. Here`s the link with my drug interaction checker.

As you can see, I take metopropol on my hypertension which was caused by either Buspirone or Mirtazapine (maybe both). When I came to the hospital, my blood pressure and pulse were perfect. After those meds my blood pressure went up to 150/105 with pulse 126/minute. All meds I take can possibly cause dizziness, vertigo, fatigue. I also take 995mg of Omega-3 twice a day and Magnesium oxide 365mg daily.

You`re right that there have been many changes in my medication recently which may have resulted in pretty messed up CNS. Wish I knew sooner about slow tappering of benzos and antidepressants. Five days before I went to the hospital, there was a reversal, my condition was getting better and better every day after three weeks of suffering. I made a mistake that I didn`t postpone hospitalization instead and should have stabilized myself on 0.2 mg Clonazepam. I could finish my taper later. Maybe I could be almost healed at present. Instead, I returned home addicted to new four drugs. It`s so frustrating! I wasn`t strong enough to refuse new antidepressants. But I was so exhausted a desperate, craving for some good sleep. I don`t understand how the doctors can tell patients such lies like andtidepressants are not addictive.

I`ll give my CNS some time to stabilize. But I need to get rid of Buspirone entirely or lower dose of Mirtazapine down to 15mg asap. Yesterday evening I took Buspirone and Mirtazapine at the same time before going to sleep and had such a horrible restless legs syndrom that I couldn`t fall asleep for 3 hours. In the morning I woke up feeling like I wasn`t sleeping at all with worse dizziness than yesterday.

Welcome, Aelius.

I`ve been suffering from anxiety disorders since I was a teenager (I`m 37). I was diagnosed with GAD and SF. In the course of time a depression developed too, but nothing serious.

How were you treated for your "anxiety disorders"?

It sounds like the dizziness started before you went off venlafaxine this last time, is that correct?

This is not medical advice. Discuss any decisions about your medical care with a knowledgeable medical practitioner.

Yes, that is correct. I started to feel dizzy from time to time when I hit the tolerance with Clonazepam, it got worse during withdrawal period. But it wasn`t as bad as now, I could walk or drive without big problems. I thought it happened due to long lasting tiredness and bad sleep and the fact that GABA is present in vestibular system.

As for my anxiety, it was treated by cognitive behavioral therapy. I got rid of 90% of my anxiety. Unfortunately, after 6 months or so I started to be lazy and quit seeing my psychotherapist. Despite knowing about relaps possibility I thought I could handle it which turned out to be wrong.

What time of day do you take each of your drugs, including the metopropol?

Is the dizziness worse at certain times of day? Please keep notes on paper about your symptoms, when you take your drugs, and their dosages.

Magnesium oxide is poorly absorbed, look for magnesium citrate or magnesium glycinate.

I take Buspirone 5mg three times a day (morning, noon, evening).

I take Egilok 25mg (Metopropol) two times a day (morning, evening).

I take Mirtazapine 30mg before going to sleep.

When I was still on Venlafaxine, the dizziness and drunk-like feeling were the strongest in the evening. After stopping Venlafaxine the dizziness got worse and the intensity is variable during the whole day. Strong dizziness hit me this morning right after I got up from bed.

I stopped Buspirone last Sunday. I haven`t noticed any new withdrawal symptoms. Cripling dizziness is still bothering me. I want to start to taper Mirtazapine soon. I feel quite ok besides the dizziness, fatigue and drowsiness, vivid dreams and hypertension.

Aelius, in your signature you write that you were taking 15 mg (5mg x3) Busipirone each day before you stopped taking it on Sun. Oct. 10. Is this correct?

It is possible that your symptoms will get worse. Please do not start to reduce the dose of mirtazapine.

Edited to add:

Would you consider taking the busipirone again?  You are still going through withdrawal symptoms from stopping clonazepam (Rivotril). It is best to keep things as stable as possible when you have withdrawal symptoms, or to make very small changes.

This is not medical advice. Discuss any decisions about your medical care with a knowledgeable medical practitioner.

I reduced Buspirone 5mg every three days. This Monday I didn't take it anymore. I feel better both physically and mentally when I'm Venlafaxine and Buspirone free (except dizziness). I have no intention to come back to Buspirone since I didn't notice any positive effect while I was on it. I'm two and a half months without Clonazepam so I'm not sure if I'm still experiencing withdrawal symptoms of that. What can I say surely is that my condition got worse after starting Mirtazapine and Venlafaxine. I'm still experiencing worsened dizziness after going off Venlafaxine.

My psychotherapist and my brother-in-law (also a psychologist) say that my dizziness isn't most likely somatised anxiety. They recommend to find out if this is caused by psych meds or something else. I'm going to go for a neurological examination.

A neurological exam is a reasonable idea.  They may not find anything out of the ordinary; this would actually be good news.

Would you add the details of your Busipirone decrease to zero in your signature?

15 mg upto and including Oct. 3; 10 mg - Oct. 4, 5, 6; 5 mg - Oct 7, 8, 9: 0 mg thereafter.

This is not medical advice. Discuss any decisions about your medical care with a knowledgeable medical practitioner.

Hello!

This week hasn`t been any good. Since Monday I started to have diarrhea. Firstly I though I ate something bad but it seems not to be the reason why. On Friday I felt good so I went out for nordic walking in the afternoon. At night I woke up feeling bad and I couldn`t fall asleep very long so I took one pill of Atarax. It helped a bit. Last night it was much worse. Again, I couldn`t fall asleep long and when I was about to fall asleep very vivid dreams appeared (like every night on Mirtazapine). It was like I was falling into some surrealistic world. I jumped out of bed completely scared. I thought I had halucinations again and that I was going crazy. I had shivering. I took Atarax later but it didn`t help. I didn`t sleep all night. It was so horrible and I`m really scared to go sleep tonight. I don`t know what to do. Is it a withdrawal from Buspirone or Clonazepan? Or is it due to Mirtazapine? It last happened about two months ago. I don`t wanna experience it again. I know that if I took a benzo, it would help...

Hello, dear friends.

I had to reinstate Buspirone this Tuesday, withdrawal symptoms unbearable. I got better within 24 hours but still have sleeping problems, morning anxiety and mild flu-like symptoms. I`m very tired. I regret that I didn`t listen to you. I was very desperate due to my dizziness and balance issues. I`m very sad and cry every day. I`m scared that I won`t feel like before stopping Buspirone. Will this suffering ever end??

Update:

I haven`t been lucky with reinstating of Buspirone. It`s not working for me and I`m not sure if it was even working before. One thing I know for sure, fast taper completely corrupted my nervous system. I`ve been experiencing horrible anxiety every day ever since. I`ve never had such anxiety and panic attacks in my life. My sleep is very poor, I wake up with strong axiety and diarreha every morning.

Yesterday I saw my psychiatrist. She agreed on tapering Buspirone because it`s not working. She thinks I feel better than I really am because I don`t want new medication. I didn`t tell her about my panic attacks I had last weekend. I`m depressed, exhaused, unmotivated. I`m scared that I`ll feel even worse after stopping Buspirone again and my brain will never recover from what happened. I also have fear that I`ll end up in the hospital for many months and they will drug me. But I want to believe I`ll be better and that Buspirone is a source of my anxiety. I tried to be active, to do something, I go swimming twice a week. Yesterday evening I probably got a panic attack, I felt like I had a fever and had hypertension. I slept only from 11.30 p.m. to 1.30 a.m. and couldn`t fall asleep later due to anxiety. Mirtazapine doesn`t help me.

Aelius, I'm sorry to read that the buspirone reinstatement didn't bring you relief. Your doctor may recommmend a fast taper; please consider tapering off the dose (5 mg, 3/day) cautiously.

Why do you have no other choice?

Because my next appointment is on January 26. I`ve been on a sick leave for 5 months and still not able to work. I experience anxiety even when I`m working on computer or watching TV. I`ve wasted nearly two months of waiting for Buspirone to take effect. I just ordered a micro scale because pills are very hard to split. I`ll use the scale to taper Mirtazapine in the future. I`ll listen to my body and if necessary I`ll hold for a longer period of time.

By the way, my balance problems are still the same. Restless legs syndrome of Mirtazapine has almost dissapeared, it doesn`t help me much with anxiety and sleep in the evening. Yesterday evening I had to take Atarax because I couldn`t fall asleep.

I'd like to ask about something. I've had withdrawal symptoms from quitting Buspirone for nearly two months and reinstatement didn't work. Some symptoms have even increased in their intensity (anxiety, panic attacks) lately. Is it possible that I will suffer "doubled" withdrawal syndrome from stopping the same drug? Has anyone experienced the same situation?

Hello,

I`ve been suffering from balance issues for a very long time. It all started last September after I stopped Trazadone and Clonazepam quickly. I was a bit dizzy only in the evenings. It dissapeared when I started to take Clonazepam again. It appeared again this July after I came off Clonazepam again. It got even worse when I started to take Mirtazapine and Venlafaxine. Always when I stopped taking A/D, the symptoms got worse for several weeks.

I`ve been living with it for nearly half a year. Nobody wants to believe me that psychiatric drugs caused it to me. I was positive for a vestibular test when I was in the hospital. When I saw a neurologist everything was okay. I`m going for MRI scan in a week but I expect nothing.

My psychiatrist and psychologist both think it`s a somatized anxiety and that I don`t have any proof something is wrong with my brain. I don`t believe I`ll ever walk normally in my life again. It has nothing to do with my level of anxiety. My anxiety is very severe after stopping Buspirone quickly (it`s a hell just to watch TV or work with a computer) and it didn`t worsen my dizzines at all. I regret I started to take this **** when my situation wasn`t so bad. I ruined my life, but I can`t switch the clock back.

Aelius. This isn't permanent. It gets better.  The more you believe that the better you will do. if you keep telling yourself you're  ...... then you are. Thinking positively is the key.

I had dizziness for close to 18 months and now it's gone.

Hang in there.

Thank you for filling in your signature but it's still a little unclear .

12/13/2016 - present Buspirone (5mg, 2.5mg, 5mg)

Many SSRI's and SSNRI's over 20 years. Zoloft for 7 years followed by Effexor, Lexapro, Prozac, Cymbalta, Celexa, Pristiq, Valdoxan, Mianserin and more - on and off. No tapering. Cold turkey off Valdoxan - end of May 2014

The longer it lasts, the harder is to believe this is not permanent. Positive thinking is a real challenge.  There`s hardly a single day I don`t cry because of it. It`s 24/7. It feels like I was drunk. It feels like my legs were jelly, my hips swinging from side to side. Sometimes I have problems with upper limb motor activity when I need to manipulate with things. I don`t even know the real cause of my balanace issues, they are all just guesses. I don`t think it`s from inner ear or cerebellum. Will it dissapear while I`m still on drugs or only when I`m a drug free? Is it from protracted withdrawal, drug side effects or anxiety? Nobody is certain.

I hope you had nice Christmas.

I really didn`t expect I would have such a hard time after stopping Buspirone in October. I haven`t had such issues with other meds. Comming off Clonazepam was a walk in the park compared to this. It was a huge mistake and another mistake was to reinstate the original dose. Now I must taper and go through it again. It has cost me much time and it can take several more months till I feel better. By then I`ll most likely lose my job and my brain will be more addcited to Mirtazapine. My doctor knows nothing about withdrawal. My family don`t believe me.

I didn`t sleep last two nights. I had some kind of vivid dreams, hallucination, derealization, whatever. My main symptoms are: balance issues, sleep disturbances, pressure on my chest and in my throat, sweating, shivering, hot flashes, neurotic bladder, inner tension, agitation, morning and evening anxiety, fatigue, sadness, sometimes blurred vision and inability to watch fast moving objects, heart palpitation, diarreha

I had a lot of those symptoms when i first stopped lex, they subsided after a couple of weeks. I remember the diarrhea it was the worst.

Is there anyway you can work from home? Or possibly find a position where you can do that while you heal? Or maybe a support system like a family member . Work can be stressful especially since most of us cant afford to take time off :(

-started lexapro (Cirpalex) summer of 2013 for anxiety

-20mg for 3 years

-started tapering June/or July 2016 (memory foggy)

-tapered down by 5 mg every 2-3 weeks

-once at 5mg tapered to 2.5 for 2-3 weeks

- SSRI free since September 24th 2016

I work as an IT specialist for an American corporation. My boss knows everything about my health issues. I could work part-time first few months. The problem is that I was hired to a new position before I was hospitalized and I didn`t finish my training. Therefore I can`t take permanent home office. These days it`s very hard for me to work with computer because I still feel anxiety and can`t focus on problem solving tasks. Watching a TV is a huge challenge as well.

For me the worst symptom is that I can`t sleep normally. Before meds my sleep was perfect.

Hello, Aelius.

Going on and off drugs can stress a nervous system that's been sensitized by drug changes even more.

Are you light-sensitive? You might find you can better tolerate working on the computer and other bright lights if you wear amber or brown-tinted glasses, even sunglasses in a pinch. Wear them all the time, even indoors, you'll be a cool cat.

To encourage sleep, be sure to reduce any light stimulation at night, even if it means watching TV in the dark and absolutely no computer.

Are you able to get fish oil and magnesium supplements, see
http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/36-king-of-supplements-omega-3-fatty-acids-fish-oil/
http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/1300-magnesium-natures-calcium-channel-blocker/

A lot of people find them helpful. Try a little bit of one at a time to see how it affects you.

How about melatonin? This can help trigger sleep, see Melatonin for sleep: Many people find it helpful and other topics in Important topics about symptoms, including sleep problems

Please keep notes on paper about your daily symptom pattern, when you take your drugs, and dosages.

Hi Altostrata,

thanks for your input.

I was always sensitive when going on drugs. I felt even very small doses. Going off drugs wasn`t that bad untill I tried to get rid of Buspirone. Maybe my brain had enough and said no. The most horrible experience I`ve had!

I`m not light-sensitive. I prefer when it`s sunny outside. Dark weather makes me depressed. I`ll try to watch TV with sunglasses. Room where I sleep is completely dark.

I take fish oil 995 mg and magnesium (subcarbonate 169mg + oxide 196mg). I was thinking about melatonin. It`s worth trying.

You might want to try a more absorbable form of magnesium, citrate or glycinate, or even Epsom salts (mag sulfate) baths at night.

Did you notice any affect to the fish oil? I've been wanting to try some but I seem so sensitive to everything that I'm apprehensive. I don't need anything to stimulate me any more. Hope you are doing well.

2011-2014: 25-50mg Zoloft then CT via doctors advice. Some mild physical sx but fully functioning, unaware that withdrawal was a thing. Dr didn’t know why I was chronically dizzy with brain fog & advised to try Zoloft again.

2016: severe adverse reactions to Zoloft (1 dose), Paxil (3 weeks), celexa (2 weeks), buspar (1 dose), lamictal (4 doses). Ativan 12 times within a month. Also tried Xanax & klonopin a couple times. Each reaction became more severe. Kindled. Became disabled from these meds.

Drug free 12-16-2016
Month 1-20: +5% healing every month
Month 21- present: setback to acute from amoxicillin antibiotic (1 dose)
Month 32- 11 months into setback from antibiotic. Seems I was floxed by amoxicillin somehow. Horrific.
