Blondiee1915: 3 months off lexapro - does it get better?

Hi nz11, I am surprised bc my Luvox dose is a bit higher than lexapro so I would think it would diminish lexapro withdrawal but I am no expert .

04/10 Luvox 25 mg PM, Nortriptyline 1 mg PM

03/08/19: Buspar 2.5 mg AM, 5 mg PM

01/01/19: Xanax 0.125 AM 5 times a week. Occasionally, 0.125 twice a day AM & noon

12/18 Armour Thyroid 60 mg (for hypothyroidism)

Supplements: B Complex, B12 (adeno), multi-vitamin, D, Adrenal Cortex, iron

  • Lexapro 20 mg 2007 - 2013 with various attempts to stop
  • 2013 found a new Dr and started trying other meds: Prozac, Notryptoline, Effexor, Buspar, Gabapentin, Paxil, Nardil

It has been two weeks since I made a switch from 5 mg lexapro to 50 mg of Luvox . I am experiencing dizziness still and at times it feels more intense, the fatigue is there probably the same sometimes a bit better sometimes worse, I am also noticing more ringing in the ears specially in the evening, and increased anxiety, I feel like I am sensitive to noises and surrounding more jumpy and jittery as well . I have my dr follow up appt tomorrow and I am nervous . I want to be off drugs and heal from 9 years of SSRI use, but I will be probably encouraged to try a higher dose . But it is ultimately my decision I know that .

Does it sound that I am suffering from lexapro withdrawal or more of a reaction to Luvox . Since lexapro is a more potent SSRI compared to Luvox maybe I am experiencing withdrawal symptoms even though Luvox dose is approx the same . I wonder if it will be easier to taper off Luvox on the future compared to lexapro . I have read that Luvox is similar to Prozac . I just want some confirmation that Luvox is being okay for me it has been 2 weeks

Lexapro is a much stronger medication than Luvox. The dose of Lexapro needed to reach 80% serotonin transmitter cell occupancy is much lower than what's required with Luvox. If you're curious about it, you could google for SSRI medication equivalencies. Some of the pharma distributors provide quick reference sheets for medical folks.

So I do not know what to think of Luvox yet.  I am still pretty sleepy and drowsy throughout the day and dizziness and off balance feeling is still there.  These two would be my big symptoms now.  I also have some anxiety but I think it is not as intense maybe, it is like I do not feel as scarred I guess.  I get some detachment feelings.  My ears are constantly buzzing specially in PM and I noticed headaches the past two days and some weird head pressure.  I also feel like I am on a drugged kind of wave.  Like I will be driving and then I would not think too much how I am getting to a certain place and just drive like a zombie, not sure if this is bc of a fatigue.  I guess it is good bc before at work I would be nervous to go to the bathroom by myself and now I just get up and go .... hmmmm

Since the symptoms are not intense and I can handle them for now it makes sense to stay on this dose and hope for some relief, right?  I also think that bc I was on lexapro for such a long time and it is much stronger drug that maybe I will not get relief from Luvox since it is less potent?  I am hoping to stabilize and experience some life at this dose and go from there

I will continue to monitor my symptoms

I am also going to see a neurologist as recommendation per my dr for dizziness (mid February).

Is it possible to recover from fatigue caused by lexapro while being on another SSRI ? I am so tired all the time not sure if it will ever go away unless I stop SSRI and wait to heal but that is 12 months plus

Fatigue is a common withdrawal symptom that a lot of us have. Hopefully time will heal it, like everything else.

Many SSRI's and SSNRI's over 20 years. Zoloft for 7 years followed by Effexor, Lexapro, Prozac, Cymbalta, Celexa, Pristiq, Valdoxan, Mianserin and more - on and off. No tapering. Cold turkey off Valdoxan - end of May 2014

I just feel like I got since I got hit with bad withdrawal in October restated lexapro and switched back to Luvox I am not noticing any improvement and I am scarred it will get worse . I read an article how fatigue improves only if you stop taking SSRI so does this mean that I will always have it unless I stop? :/

Blondie. I'm not sure but I would think so as psych drugs are basically debilitating in the long term. I would read Robert Whittaker's Anatomy Of An Epidemic.

I just did a bit of research on SSRIs and found this comment in a 1998 document comparing antidepressants then available:

[fluvoxamine (Luvox) is] the most nauseating, constipating & sedating of the SSRIs

It might be worth asking your doctor and pharmacist about this. It might explain the fatigue you're experiencing.

Edited to add: Is there a reason you're taking it twice a day instead of once before bed?

I'd try asking your doc her thoughts about switching to 1/day administration. No point in taking a sedating medication in the morning especially when you're already feeling fatigued.

Update - I changed my dose from twice a day (25 mg am and 25 mg pm) to once before bed 50 mg.  I slept so much.  I went to bed at 9 pm woke up at 9 am.  I was up until noon and then fell asleep again from noon until 3 pm.  I still feel tired and also noticing headache and slight nausea.  Feeling somewhat down too, maybe I am loosing hope who knows.  I know my period should be coming any day (it became so irregular since I did all the changed I don't even remember when I had it last) so that probably has to do something with my mood as well.

My body feels exhausted and my mind too, I feel weak and tired, my eyes are burning and all I want to do is either sit I am too tired to stand or go to bed and sleep for at least 12 hours . I don't know if I am healing if I have fatigue or it is anxiety and what am I doing wrong to not get a small break . How can it be after 2 months of lexapro I felt energetic happy and okay overall to now feeling like sh*t . Sorry for venting . I just want this all to stop and to feel better

It's not the case for everybody, but have you ruled out low iron?  For myself, that was what was causing my extreme exhaustion.  It's worth checking, if you haven't already.

Micro-tapering: four weekly 0.4% cuts, hold 4 weeks (struggling with symptoms).

8 month hold.

2017 Micro-tapering: four weekly 1% cuts, hold 4 weeks (symptoms almost non-existent).

2020 Still micro-tapering. Just over 2/3 of the way off effexor. Minimal symptoms, - and sleeping well.

I had another episode of vertigo this week.  I woke up with everything spinning and moving. I went to see my GP and she said that it sounds like I have benign positional vertigo.  She does not think it could be medicine related.  The thing is I never had these vertigo experiences before luvox so I am thinking it could be related.  I did google vertigo/luvox and there is a small chance of correlation.

I also txted my psychiatrist to let her know I was so exhausted and she suggested cutting the dose back if I am that tired (that was before the vertigo episode).  Anyways, I cut my luvox dose from 50 mg to 37.5 (25% decrease).  I know this is alot, but I am worried about exhaustion and this vertigo and I am hoping decrease would help.  Day two after the cut I feel a bit spacey and have constant headache.  Sleeping alot still.

Reducing may be a good idea, but I'd suggest going by 10% to avoid causing further w/d issues.  You had recently made other changes which can also have caused w/d symptoms, so your CNS is already coping with a lot.

Hi Blondie,

Thanks so much for all the encouragement you've given me on my thread. It's been so helpful.

Sorry to hear you're experiencing so much fatigue on the Luvox. That can be so frustrating especially when you have things that HAVE to get done. I imagine staying awake while studying must be especially difficult.

Has the Luvox at least given you some relief from the anxiety. If it has, I know it's not much, but it's something. Since the fatigue is obviously a side effect at least you know that someday it will go away when you are ready to wean off. You won't feel like this forever. Not that I'm encouraging you to wean off any time soon, but sometimes just remembering that there is a potential end can be comforting.

You're doing so well to be able to keep up with your studies throughout this process. You should be very proud of yourself.

Peace, love and healing.

Hi Karen,

I reduced 6 days ago by 25%.  I know it is much more than recommended, but I got nervous with this vertigo episode so I cut much more.  Plus the pill is already so small and since I was on Luvox for only a month I thought I should be okay.  I am having headaches, head pressure, fatigue, but it is weird I am not as fatigued as I was.  I also think when my body feels heavy and achy and I feel dizzy and weak I count that as fatigue too.  I had a very crappy day yesterday.  I was crying and thought it will never get better and what should I do etc etc.  This is the first time I cried since summer as after I quit lexapro I kind of became numb.  So the crying was new and now thinking about it it def had to do with the dosage cut.  I had an appt with my doctor today because I was so miserable the past few days and had this plan of asking her to write me a note for work and how I will get fired and be homeless and alone and all these crazy thoughts.  And then comes today and during the day I felt much better.  I was able to work through the day and just be a bit happy even.  I also feel a bit jittery and nervous dizzy as hell but I was okay and not panicky.  I asked my dr what she thinks and said since I feel okay I do not want to make any changes adjustments etc the only thing that she suggested is to change to extended release pill so I can just take it before bed.  I am sticking to the plan and hoping for another okay day.

Hi Patricia,

Thank you so much for your kind words.  I had a bad day yesterday and thought it will never be better, but today was a much better day.  I am not sure if this has to do with the weather the sun was shinning and I always feel better during sunny days.  I thought how when I feel terrible I cannot even fathom that one day I can be fine and have no symptoms, I jump to the worst conclusions and it just such a sucky feeling.  And then when I feel somewhat okay and I quickly forget about the bad symptoms and then when they return it is hard to be accepting again and remember that the good days are possible.  I have to be positive and think about the present.  I like what you wrote in your latest post how to be with the now is very important and crucial.  I started therapy and I realize that all of my fears are about the future and the past.  I do not think about the present being in the moment and this is something I have to work on.  And yes my anxiety did diminish so I should be thankful and not expect a cure overnight and appreciate little progresses here and there.  I am learning that this is 2 steps forward one step back kind of process.

Feeling a bit more optimistic today and hopeful.

Ty for your support and really hope you are having a good day

I need assistance with beads counting.

So my dr switched me to extended release formula so that I can only take my med once as the regular luvox has short life and is recomended to be taken twice a day.  I did not realize the extended version comes in capsules.  The smallest dose is 100 mg and I am taking 37.5.  I did my calculations for the beads but my question is do I need to take them in the capsule?  Can I buy empty capsules somewhere to store excess beads?  For instance tonight I counted 34 beads which equates 37.5 mg but what do I do with the rest of the excess beads?

any input appreciated

What I do is empty the capsule, weigh out what I need and then put that back into the capsule.  The remainder I store in a small glass jar with a wide mouth,.  I use stickers to write the expiry date on the jar.  I keep the extras because it's handy to have them if you get prescription issues further down the track.  This way you have some to tide you over, if necessary.  When I get a new batch with a different expiry date, I set that aside and use up the ones in my jar first.  Then I start the new batch.

You can buy empty capsules (both gelatin and veggie) on line and in some health or pharmacy stores.  Try to get the same size your drug comes in, as they are easier to swallow.

This exact thing happens to me. Isn't it crazy how our brains play tricks on us like this? We know it's not true but it's so hard not to believe the lies our brains are telling us. The withdrawal brain keeps insisting that things will never get better even though we may have seen evidence to the contrary just a short time earlier. This, for me, is THE most confusing effect of withdrawal, and one of the hardest to accept.

At least it's comforting to know I am not the only one who struggles with this.

July 28, 2023-approximately .87mg. Dr. fast tapered me at the end and realized he messed up. Prescribe it again and I am doing "slower than a turtle" taper.
