Week 20 of my Lexapro taper, down to 13.9 mg.  Slow and steady.  I'm starting to notice a pattern, the first day or two I drop I have increased symptoms, though tolerable.  By day 5 I have often stabilized, with few or even no symptoms.

If there's one good thing about WD, it gives me great incentive to practice my non-drug coping skills, especially meditation, to alleviate symptoms.  It has also brought to the fore some negative habits, like regrets and second-guessing and feeling I've misplayed my life, that I used to indulge in but can no longer afford to since I'm walking the tightrope of WD.  That's when I do a channel-switch.

I just read this from JanCarol and think it's great guidance, for me at least;

I expect to still be healing in 10 years.  And that expectation may be all the difference in the world, the very reason for my hope.

Hi Gridley,

Congrats on your window earlier last week. That is wonderful! Makes it all worthwhile. Here's to many more.

2020: After 18+ years (entire adult life) on Paxil, a dangerous doctor-led "taper" in 2015, and four years tapering off the last 1 mg thanks to SA and the Brassmonkey slide,

I AM COMPLETELY FREE OF PAXIL! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Forever.

2021: Began conservative, proper, CNS-respecting taper of Zoloft, led by the only expert on me -- me. Making own liquid. 5-10% plus holds.

2022: Holding on Zoloft for now. Current dose 47 mg. Hanging in, hanging on. Severe protracted PAWS, windows and waves. While I may not be doing "a lot" by outside standards, things are graaaaadually getting better

Yoga (gentle to medium); walks; daily breath practice; nutrition, fruits/veg; nature; water; EastEnders (lol); practicing self-compassion, self-care; boundaries; connection; allowing feelings; t r u s t ing that I, too, will heal. (--> may need to be reminded of this.)

Gridley-- it's great to hear that the taper is going so well, keep up the good work, and thanks for all the help.

Brass

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks.  The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Final Dose 0.016mg.     Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017

Another 2 1/2% drop in Lexapro to 13.5 mg last Saturday.  Now it's the third day and I've felt the drop--worse insomnia and morning anxiety plus the return of early morning ruminative thoughts, which I haven't had in weeks.  It's interesting how these old patterns of worry and regret cycle back.  I get up and move around and they dissipate.  Many weeks the third day is when I feel the drop, not always.  So many variables.  Just noting it and moving on

Over the past few weeks I've had several "0" days (the best, no or virtually no symptoms) and only a few "3" or "3-4" days ("5"is worst).

So the good days are quite in the majority.

After this week comes the regularly scheduled 2-week hold.  Around that time my wife's friend from the States comes to visit for five weeks and we plan to do some traveling.  It's always been comfortable with her, but I've never been in WD before.  I may consider extending the hold for some or part of her visit.

Much healing to all of you.

Glad it is going well for you Gridley. I think it would be very sensible to hold everything while your wife's friend visits, you will enjoy the time much more without the symptoms from the cuts, however mild they are and it will give your brain a break to catch up.  :)

Gridley, thanks for your kind words on my thread and helping me through the day. :)

I read on another thread that you do the legs-up-the-wall yoga pose and find it calming. How long do you hold the pose for?

That's one of the yoga poses that I love but always forget about!!! Thanks for the reminder!

Hope the visit (and hold) are going well. <3

I've been taking 75 mg Enerphos phosphoserine (successor product to Seriphos phosphatidylserine/phosphorylated serine) at bedtime for insomnia.  I fall sleep easily   but wake in the middle of the night.  For a few months the Enerphos ws putting me back to sleep but I am having less success with it.  I note no adverse reactions to the Enerphos.

Having read of Shep's good experience with Glycine, I was thinking about trying it to get a better night's sleep.

Could I take both?

I am currently on an extended hold (7 weeks) of my Lexapro taper until our houseguest leaves.  That taper is going well.

hi Gridly

I don't know anything about the Enerphos, but glycine is just a simple amino acid that is found in many foods.

I would think that it would be safe to take it regardless of what else you are on.

I've been taking it for a while now to help me with anxiety and it also seems to help me sleep more deeply.

I am very pleased with the results, but I am careful now to only take 1 tablet at a time, since so many things can turn paradoxical for us.

there is also a powder that you can mix with water. you could get that, or do what I did at first- I opened the 1g capsule and dumped out half of it in a glass of water and drank that (it's pleasant tasting, just a mildly sweet taste is all)

I was afraid to start out at too high a dose in case I had side effects.

I now take 1 capsule at night, One when I wake up in the middle of the night, and one when I am getting up for the day.

this is working well for me.

I hope that if you choose to try it, that it does as well for you.

Having read of Shep's good experience with Glycine, I was thinking about trying it to get a better night's sleep.

Could I take both?

Hi, Gridley.

I don't know if there are any interactions with taking both, so please do some research on this. As Happy2Heal mentioned, Glycine is a simple amino acid found in many foods. In fact, before I tried the supplement, I started drinking a mug of bone broth in the evenings. Bone broth is a natural source of glycine. After a number of weeks of using the bone broth and not having any adverse reactions, I added in a very small amount of a Glycine supplement and worked my way up to 500 mg in the evening.

If the Enerphos is no longer working, you may want to stop it, probably doing a bit of a rapid taper as opposed to stopping cold turkey. Since less is more in withdrawal, keeping your supplements to a minimum is always best. When adding in a new supplement, it's harder to tell if you have a reaction to the new supplement or if it's the combination. Just a thought.

I'm glad you're doing well overall. I hope this trend continues.

Great suggestions, Shep.

I've been drinking bone broth pretty regularly (alas, no powdered here, but the meat man in the pueblo has good bones).  I've tried 500 mg Glycine the last two nights with some good extension of sleep, so preliminary results are good.

I did some interaction searches between Enerphos and Glycine with no results.  I'm going to stick with both for a while so as not to do too many things at once and then see what happens regarding dropping the Enerphos.  I understand what you're saying that, should there be a bad reaction, is it the combination or the new supplement?  Waiting and seeing.  The rapid taper is a good idea.

I'm almost finished with "Anatomy of an Epidemic."  Frightening and angering.

I'm glad you're making so much progress.  Thanks as always for keeping an eye on me.

Thanks for checking in.   I'm happy for my wife to visit with her old friend.  It is, I confess, a bit stressful for me.  I know my system is grateful for the hold.  I tell myself that every moment I am healing and imagine little knocked-down decommissioned neurotransmitters (I imagine them looking like traffic signs) popping up all over my brain.

Shep,

You suggested doing a rapid taper of the Enerphos (rather than CT) before trying any other sleep supplement.  I'm taking 175 mg at bedtime and another 175 when I wake up.  How would you suggest I rapid taper this?  Thanks.

Hi, Gridley.

You might try a 25% reduction in the Enerphos, perhaps even do it evenly with 12.5% reduction from the morning dose and 12.5% reduction from the evening dose.

Give it a week or so to see how you do. Hopefully you'll be able to slip off it easily, but if you do start having problems, this will let you know that you'll either need to stay on it and taper later or simply taper it at a much slower rate.

Please let us know how you do.

Hey Gridley -- you don't want to make those reductions in Seriphos too quickly. If you re-read Shep's post, you'll see a recommendation to "Give it a week" after each decrease. You've worked too hard to upset the balance now!

Scallywag,

Or would you suggest I go back to 150 enerphos and hold rather than the 130 I dropped to last night? Sleep was better at 130 than 150 or 175.   I had been on 150 for quite a while, increased to 175 for two days a few days ago, then dropped to 150 night before last and 130 last night.  I want to KIS (keep it stable, as much as possible).

I am having increasing anxiety about our upcoming trip to Buenos Aires (leaving Tuesday, 34 hour journey).  This is my first trip, except to the safe security of family in the States, since I've been in WD.  My guess is the anxiety is related to the stressor of the trip rather than the enerphos changes.  That's just my guess.

Thanks.

Gridley

2021: Began conservative, proper, CNS-respecting taper of Zoloft, led by the only expert on me -- me. Making own liquid. 5-10% plus holds.

2022: Holding on Zoloft for now. Current dose 47 mg. Hanging in, hanging on. Severe protracted PAWS, windows and waves. While I may not be doing "a lot" by outside standards, things are graaaaadually getting better

Hi, Sky,

Yes, 32 hours sounds like we're going by bus!  But we're flying.  We live in a little mountain village 2 hours from a regional airport and connections and layovers are tough.  First we fly to Quito.  Then to Lima, then to Santiago, finally to BA.

But it's a great city and the food is fantastic.  I'm sure once I get there and have left the gravitational pull of my safe cozy home (and our dogs who even now sense something is up) I'll be fine and up for adventure.

I'll keep an eye out for those Mafalda comic characters.

Long travel times and lots of connections can really be draining.  Sounds like a fun trip though.  Roll with what ever happens and enjoy it.

We just got back from Buenos Aires and it was good for me to get away from the house and focus on other things than myself.  It was my first trip to BA in withdrawal (the other trips I was on my meds) and I did notice a fair amount of anhedonia--lack of enjoyment and enthusiasm for sightseeing and museums that I'd savored before.  Still, I was glad to see I did have appreciation for some art in museums and much enjoyment of the wonderful food there.  I loved being in a big city again (I'm a city boy dealing with and sometimes with  living in the country and, to boot, the Third World.)  Very little anxiety on the trip.  Still some insomnia.

Though the air voyage was long, with lots of layovers, I was glad to see I didn't have very bad reactions to that stress.  It helped that I was on a long hold for the trip and the three weeks preceding (MammaP, thanks for the suggestion.)  Now that I'm back, I'm resuming my Lexapro taper and also my Enorphos taper.

SkyBlue, I didn't see the Mafalda statues but heard that they are seated on park benches.  I did see lots of Mafalda backpacks in the stores.

I was very happy to see our three little dogs when we got back.
