Timeman
Help. I was on benzo for 15 years. Did a detox at a clinic 6 mos ago. In the last three months I took mertazapine to sleep. I had no idea!!! Then I decided the side effects were terrible I am confused by the taper idea and exactlyhow to safely reinstate. On metazapen 15 mg for 3 mos. Went to 7.5 for three days. No sleep. Went on 15 mg. Felt like crap. Still decided to cut to 11.25 mgs. 14 days. quit. Six days, last of which, no sleep. Terrible!! ER. My doctor told me I needed it and to go back on 15mg. I did and slept last night. Woke up feeling very drugged and had anxiety attacks. Went on the web and found this site. Read about reinstating at a smaller dose then I came off of. Did 3.75 to see if I felt better. I think I do. But tonight is coming and I don't want to take anymore today if it will mess up any future. I thought I could slowly taper from here. Or do I up the dose and taper from that?? Help!! I am confused about how this works. Moderator Emeritus scallywag Posted January 20, 2017 Moderator Emeritus Share Posted January 20, 2017 Timeman -- Welcome to Surviving Antidepressants (SA). I've moved your post to the Introductions Forum so that more people will see your question. This is YOUR introduction topic -- the place for you to ask questions, record symptoms, share your progress, and connect with other members of the SA community.A request: Would you summarize your history in a signature -- drugs, doses, dates, and discontinuations & reinstatements, in the last 12-24 months particularly? Any drugs prior to 24 months ago can just be listed with start and stop years. Please use actual dates or approximate dates (mid-June, Late October) rather than relative time frames (last week, 3 months ago) Spell out months, e.g. "October" or "Oct."; 9/1/2016 can be interpreted as Jan. 9, 2016 or Sept. 1, 2016. Please leave out symptoms and diagnoses. A list is easier to understand than one or multiple paragraphs. You can find instructions in this topic: Please put your withdrawal history in signature If you are using a phone or mobile device, you need to switch to the "full" or desktop version of the site. Instructions are in Post 9 and Post 10 If I'm interpreting your post correctly, you started taking 15 mg mirtazpine sometime between late September and mid-October. Were you having difficulty sleeping? That may have been extended withdrawal symptom from your benzo "detox" fast taper. Then starting in late December you made these changes: (˄ = increase, ˅ = decrease) ˅ 7.5 mg for 3 days, which resulted in no sleep ˄ 15 mg (for 1 day?); felt awful ˅ 11.25 mg for 14 days ˅ 0 . Stayed at zero for 6 days, got no sleep on 6th day ˄ Reinstated to 15 mg on Jan 18 and slept that night. Making multiple changes over less than a month's time is destabilizing and likely to worsen symptoms, not improve them. Your desire to get off the medications is admirable. To stay off mirtazapine in the long run, you probably need to continue at a reinstated dose of mirtazapine now and allow yourself to stabilize. Only then, after having stabilized, would we suggest that you start to slowly taper off it. Because of how different doses of mirtazapine affect neurotransmitter processes, most people experience more sleepiness and fatigue at lower doses than at higher ones. I'd suggest that you continue with the reinstatement at 15 mg. That's only a bit higher than what we'd usually suggest for someone whose last dose was 6 days ago. Your doctor has advised the dose and you've already started it. To most people, it doesn't make sense that you should reinstate a medication and then stay on it for a while before decreasing the dose. Timeman
Thank God for you and your timely response. I will get things together ASAP. I was freaking out about the whole situation. I slept last night for five hours. Did still feel anxious today, but more relieved because I can form a plan, and I know I can still do this.. I will take 15mg mertazapene until I feel better. I thought that coming off benzo's might still be playing a huge part in what was happening to me now I know. I just cannot express how grateful I am to have a place where I can ask questions and get real answers. When I went to rehab the told me NOTHING of what to expect or what may happen. I just think unless you go through this, you just can't learn it at the university. Im doing my homework and I will get back to you. Timeman
I have read and watched the links of what you listed. What an eye opener. Scary, yes. But it is what it is. I am taking a breath and going forward. BTW I could not open the first link. It would come back as address unknown. I will get a comprehensive , understandable drug use and drug sensation history for my signature. I do have a long history of drug use as I have come from the woodstock era. Thank you. Aelius
Hi Timeman, I also read somewhere that Mirtazapine could worsen anxiety. Timeman
One of the things that I noticed was when I did my first drop from 15 mg to 7.5 for three days reinstated at 15 mgs for one day, I felt zapped like I do now, which is why I went to 11.25 when I did. It reduced this uncomfortable feeling. Went off six days of which the last three I did not sleep. {big fear} I reinstated to 15 mg that night (felt it within 30 minutes) slept 8 hours, wook up feeling like I do now. Should I be at 11.25?? I have a ton of symptons that I felt the first time I reinstated at a lower dose that eventually seemed to go away...which is why I foolishly stopped. (This relates to another member not Timeman, my mistake ) The best thing for your CNS (central nervous system) is to stay steady at a dose. Moderator Emeritus scallywag Posted January 22, 2017 Moderator Emeritus Share Posted January 22, 2017 TM: I received your message. You asked about decreasing dose from 15 mg (doctor advised reinstatement) to 11.25 mg, the dose you took before discontinuing. This may seem repetitive; it is. I'll keep saying it as long as needed. I may write a quick text substitution/macro for it: Your symptoms are those of withdrawal. Withdrawal symptoms are resolved with time. There is no miracle drug, secret dose, or magical supplement that will eliminate your symptoms. Withdrawal symptoms are caused by a destabilized CNS (central nervous system). Many people get relief by reinstating and maintaining a steady dose. Adjusting doses to deal with symptoms is unlikely to help and more likely to perpetuate problems or or even trigger new symptoms. Your CNS in fact your whole body, does best with stability. Think about it, if you broke a bone in your leg you wouldn't attempt to walk on until after it had been properly set and then stabilized. Then you'd move about with crutches and then when the bone had healed enough, a cane. Sudden discontinuations of SSRI and other psychiatric medications "break" the CNS. The CNS can and does heal under the proper conditions, just like a broken leg heals. Changing doses is like walking on a broken leg -- you keep putting burden on a system that can't support it . Keeping doses steady is akin to setting the leg and putting on a cast to allow the bone to "reknit" itself. If you had unlimited time and resources, you could spend time seeking the exact right dose. It might be wasted time and effort, but you could afford the lost weeks. The recovery process is not linear -- symptoms come and go in a pattern we call "waves and windows." You will see symptoms abate and then reappear for no apparent reason. I wish it wasn't that way, but none of us were involved in the design of human neurology. The Windows and Waves pattern of stabilization. So, I discourage you from changing your dose. The decision, however, is yours to make not mine. If you do decrease dose, determine for yourself that this WILL be the last change you make for several months. This is not medical advice. Timeman
Wow!! Did a detox 6 mos ago off of klonopin. It was horrible. I thought it was past. That I was rounding the corner... I Was put on mertazapine in October. I had taken it before, no problem. Quit. No problem. As you can see in my post I went off it for five days. Insomnia was terrible. Reinstated on 15 mg...going on six days ago. Slept great first night, 6 hours second 5 third 2 fourth 5 hours fifth. The problem is I feel like I am back in benzo withdrawl during the day. Timeman
I have a question about reinstating and kindling. I was on a Klonopin as you may read in my signature. I was put on mertazapine, which I quit and had no sleep for 3 days. My dr told me to go back and reinstate. Ever since them I have had serious wd feelings. Did I kindle?? Or I have have also read that some people that return to the same drug, not a benzo, have adverse effect. Will any drug I do cause a kindling effect? I am a little confused again. 2000 September start Xanax .05 mg stop September 2002 start klonopin September 2002 November 2015 dose increased to 1mg x2 August 16 2016 STOP klonopin DETOX 11 days took drug to detox but I can't remember what it was stopped drug 11 days August 27 th 2016 start August 27 gabapenton 100 mg 4x per day increase to 300 3x October 2016 stopped gabapenton Started mertazapen 15 mg October 1 2006 reduce December 27- 29 2016 7.5 updose December 30 reduced January 1 2017 11.25 mg mertazapine Stopped January 13 January 19 Reinstated to current dose of 15mg Note Taking supplements from the ROAD BACK 1500 MG omega 3 body calm tart cherry and as of yesterday i ounce of tart cherry juice 2x per day Link to comment
Moderator Emeritus scallywag Posted February 16, 2017 Moderator Emeritus Share Posted February 16, 2017 It seems you were prescribed mirtazapine to "treat" symptoms that were caused by a rapid discontinuation of Klonopin. If I'm reading your signature correctly, this is your history with mirtazapine: 15 mg October 1 2006 << did you mean 2016? 7.5 mg December 27- 29 2016 15 mg (7.5 updose) to December 30 11.25 mg (3.75 reduction) January 1 2017 Stopped January 13 Reinstated to current dose of 15mg January 19 You made 5 changes in a period of 24 days. None of the changes were small ones, the lowest change was a decrease of 25%. I don't understand kindling so won't attempt to answer your question about that. My best guess is that you are still dealing with the rocky road from the fast taper off klonopin and now the effects of the 5 changes you made between Dec. 27 and Jan. 19. You would be very, very wise to stay at your current dose of 15 mg for another 3 months to stabilize before even thinking about decreasing or changing dose. This is not medical advice.
