LilyBlueRose: Could this really be delayed withdrawal symptoms? Im really suffering

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, thank you so much for reading this! Ive had a really bad two years. I will give a bit of history.

I am 29 now. From 16-21 I was on 20 or 40 mg celexa. I honestly can not remember. For extreme anxiety. It honestly helped me so much. I quit it cold turkey and dont remember having many symptoms. Ive always struggled with anxiety though.

Fast forward to 2014. I had my first and only child. Right after i had her I knew something was wrong. I didnt sleep for 5 days straight, heart racing, high BP etc. My dr put me back on 20 mg of celexa. I went to my pcp and he tested my thyroid. I was hyperthyroid with hot nodules. Come to find in March of 2016 that I also have Hashimotos Thyroiditis . I am not on any thyroid replacement atm. My levels are pretty optimal even though my free t3 goes down a little lower than Id like sometime. I am VERY knowledgeable about this and now work with a naturopath who is also knowledgable on optimal vs in range and such.

I was on Celexa 20mg again from September 2014 until the mid end of February 2016. This time I tapered slowly over a few months.

So also in March of 2016 , (mid march)  I woke up with severe vertigo. Diagnosed with BPPV which I believe, because the vertigo spins only ever happens when I lay back and look to the right. Thats literally the only thing that triggers it. Epley manuever takes away the vertigo, and I am left with off balance general dizziness for two weeks. But from march until June I was VERY DIZZY. I was dizzy pretty much the entire time, with severely congested ears. VERY annoying. I saw a specialist ENT, and my pcp who both said allergies and I tried flonase for three months and it did nothing to help. I also had trouble breathing , like chest felt heavy, and heart would race just standing up. My bp would also go way low for me, like 96/60 sometimes or stay around 100/65 . Doctors couldnt really tell me much.

In June- August it pretty much went away with a few periods of dizziness.

Now from October until now I am hit again really hard with a new kind of dizziness. I feel in motion when I am still. Like laying back or sitting still I feel like I am on a boat, or on a pool raft swaying on the waves. It is maddening!!!!!! My ears are also still congested. Saw specialist again, who ruled out Menieres disease and other stuff, and both specilaist and pcp say allergic rhinitis. Im on Astelin spray which helps lessen it for sure, but its still there. I also am having the weird breathing issues again, where the littlest things make me feel like I ran a mile. I hate this so much.

I am going to have my home tested for mold in a few days, because I just dont know what the heck is going on. My husband frequents this forum and he is telling me that this could all be from my celexa. I just have a hard time believing I could be suffering from it the way that I am, this long out? I haven't read much on here yet because I have really bad anxiety, but I was just wondering if this sounds like it could be from celexa, or if it really does sound like allergies, or basically any advice.

I really appreciate you taking the time to read this. Thank you so much.

It's the celexa I went through the same, everything you are saying and more. Are you still on celexa?

10 years citalopram 30mg- tapered down in December 15/2015- Jan 15/2016 to 20mg for two weeks, ten for one week and five for another week, then stopped, less then two weeks later, sheer hell broke lose with debilitating withdrawal symptoms.

Update-- reinstated 5mg of celexa on feb 5-- within hours noticed immediate difference in WD symptoms-- Holding holding and more holding.

Updose- March 23/16 too 10mg- relieved the harsher head symptoms- current symptoms headaches, dizzy, numbness and tingling in my head.

Benzos- 2015-Ativan on and off for 6 months 2mg- switched to clonazepam nov 2015- 2mg till Jan 2016 Zopiclone 7.5mg nov-dec 2015- was tapered off over 4weeks- Currently in protracted withdrawal. ????????????????????????????????

Update- ended up in the hospital April 18/16 major suicidal ( never had that before) was admitted/ been there ever since, put me back to full dose celexa 30mg no drugs added, IAM FINALLY STABLE AFTER 3 months of tortuous hell. Got a great physiatrist that new all about WD, he will help me taper properly in a couple of months at 5% deductions holding 8 weeks. I never want to relive that hell again.

Udate- stable and holding, doing things slowly is key.

Kalinia -- Welcome to Surviving Antidepressants (SA)

What you describe is very likely withdrawal symptoms. Some people experience a "honeymoon" before symptoms start. You can read more about symptoms in these topic:

What is withdrawal syndrome.

Delayed onset of withdrawal symptoms

Although doctors believe that a taper of several months to be slow and gradual, that belief (and often these doctor themselves) is useless to the many people who discover that their CNS (central nervous system) can't keep up to the speed of dose decrease. Here's a few links that discuss what happens in the CNS when a psycho-neuro-active drug is discontinued or its dose is decreased:

One theory of anti-depressant withdrawal syndrome

We suggest that people taper by reducing dose by no more than 10% once per month. For more detail, please read

Why taper by 10% of my dosage?.

Here's our information about Celexa:

Tips for tapering off Celexa (citalopram)

Some people find supplementing with omega 3 fatty acids and/or magnesium helpful. Start with ONE or the other at a low dose and then increase the amount slowly.

Omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil).

Magnesium, nature's calcium channel blocker.

A request: Would you summarize your history in a signature -- drugs, doses, dates, and discontinuations & reinstatements, in the last 12-24 months particularly?

  • Any drugs prior to 24 months ago can just be listed with start and stop years.
  • Please use actual dates or approximate dates (mid-June, Late October) rather than relative time frames (last week, 3 months ago)
  • Spell out months, e.g. "October" or "Oct."; 9/1/2016 can be interpreted as Jan. 9, 2016 or Sept. 1, 2016.
  • Please leave out symptoms and diagnoses.
  • A list is easier to understand than one or multiple paragraphs.
  • You can find instructions in this topic: Please put your withdrawal history in signature
  • If you are using a phone or mobile device, you need to switch to the "full" or desktop version of the site. Instructions are in Post 9 and Post 10
I hope you'll find the information in the SA forums helpful for your situation. I'm sorry that you are in the position that you need the information, but am glad that you found us. Please let us know how you're doing.

@ali4  This really jumped out at me " Updose- March 23/16 too 10mg- relieved the harsher head symptoms- current symptoms headaches, dizzy, numbness and tingling in my head."

At around 2 months off of celexa while I was severely dizzy, I also started noticing a lot of tingling and weird feelings in my head. I called my endocrinologist crying saying my head was tingling and it felt like my brain was jittering.

I hope you are doing much better now.

I really appreciate you taking the time to read this. Thank you so much.

I have this exact symptom

It's called floaty boat. Like an inner pendulum rotating inside me to the rhythm of my heart, back and forward and side to side. Like a rocking/swaying - being pushed and pulled but it can't be seen by anyone. I can just feel it. It's like being on a boat out at see.

I was on Citalopram (Celexa) 20mg for 1 year and then 40mg for another year before I cold turkey'd. I had some weird symptoms which I didn't attribute to being in withdrawal for the first few months. Then I threw myself into hard withdrawal at the 5th month off by drinking heavily. I then woke up with a panic attack and the floaty boat symptom began.

I have it a year now...

Link to comment

Do any of you suffer from congested ears? I feel like that is the root cause of the floaty boat feeling, which I am guessing could definitely be a delayed withdrawal thing? I have been reading a lot about this, and it seems it takes a year or two to allow our brains to heal from these issues. I am really staying hopeful that we won't suffer with this forever.

What you explained really hits the nail on the head. Rotating inside to the heart beat, and rocking/swaying etc. So so maddening. I find that when still if I rock my foot , it helps me not be aware of it so much, since my body is actually in motion along with the inner feelings of my head. I know its not a fix, but it may provide some minor temporary relief for you guys as well.

I just am so use to it now - I've had it 13 months now. It's changed slightly in regards to not feeling so many moments of bobbing up and down whole walking or standing still.

I use to have congested ears what at the start, for a month or so. My ears do fill with pressure though when going down hills, which I've never had in my life.

How do you feel when you are leaning against a kitchen counter table?

Link to comment

I think any progress is good! A step in the right direction. I know what you mean about being used to it in a sense though.

When I lean I feel like I'm swaying even though I am standing still. It is most bothersome to me when I'm still. Sitting.. Laying.. Standing still. Being in motion helps me not to notice it,even if it's just tapping my foot quickly.

So annoying! I hope this goes away for us soon

Ive been off of the celexa for a year now this month. The dizziness started in March, a few weeks after I stopped taking celexa. (weened) I had a BPPV episode, and then after that my ears became congested and I was dizzy for months. Went away pretty much in the summer, and then back with this new in motion feeling from October- now. I had something very stressful happen to me, and the in motion occured days after and hasnt fully left. Astepro nasal antihistamine spray helps a bit. I was at around a level 9 out of ten of the rocking boat feeling, and now I range from a 2 to a 6 on a bad day.

So the stressful situation provoked this swaying boat motion? That's very interesting.

I had a health scare in January - 5 months after cold turkey Citalopram and then had a panic attacks after a very scary situation which led to my swaying then. It hasn't went away since.

I have went to an ENT and they did pick up an abnormaliry in my right ear but diagnosed me with something else. I believe it to be the Citalopram. Can't be a coincidence.

The most prominent symptom of antidepressant withdrawal is vertigo/dizziness. Serotonin plays a huge part in the ear which the ENT picked up on a device.

I just want it to be over. 13 months is a long time

Link to comment

Yah I really think the stressful situation caused the swaying. It happened a few days after several days of high stress.

I agree.. 13 months is a long time for sure! Coming up on 12 fore for general dizziness.

May I ask what your stressful situation was? So you think Its stress and not withdrawal? Do you only have general dizziness? Or are you saying you've had the swaying 12 months now?

Did I mention I went to an ENT and he used this brand new technology (goggles) and they shook my head whilst I looked at a dot on the wall, and the computer spotted this abnormality in my right ear. It's on an axis they would never have previously been able to detect with standard technology and said I was lucky I didn't arrive to him a month prior. He said it was vestibular neuronitis, and it'll rarely occur twice.... I was like once? I still have it a year on!

I do believe the withdrawal has sucked the serotonin out of the ear (there is a thread on this forum about serotonin and the ear) or something to that affect. Hence why it was dectecfable in my screening. He said I had compensated somewhat... even though I've done no exercises for that.

It's strange how I was mostly fine for the first few months and then a health scare which provoked a panic attack made this happen, for it then to be detectable in my ear. He said because it happened so suddenly after a panic, that it must be anxiety, but then backtracked and said that incident must be just a coincidence after he detected it on the piece of technology. Then again same thing happened to you! That cannot be just a coincidence

Link to comment

Oh thats interesting, from what I am reading, the vestibular neuronitis is inflammation of the inner ear? Sometimes Labyrinthitis ?[/size]

My situation was an old friend from many years back contacted me. We were talking as if we never stopped being friends, and shared personal info, laughs etc, then a month later I see on the news they were convicted of very dark evil things involving abusing of children. I had absolutely no idea, no inkling, etc. It really messed me up.

What does the ent think now, that it hasn't gone away?

So are you thinking the withdrawal caused seretonin to be sucked out of your ear, and that showed inflammation on the machine?

Yah I agree, these things are so damn hard to pinpoint exactly whats causing it! I am open to it being withdrawal, but also open to it being something like weird allergies or something. I do have hashimotos, but my levels arent bad, so I really dont think its that.

Ive had general dizziness from March until october ( 8 months) and then october until now the swaying rocking sensation, which happened  a few days after stressing a lot. I really dont think the stress is the major cause of it, but perhaps the stress triggered whatever is going on to be worse. Maybe this all is withdrawal because the general dizziness happend only less than a month after stopping celexa.

I really hope you get some relief sooner than later! Both of us . I do fine antihistamine nose sprays to cut down the dizziness rocking alot. I also had my air ducts cleaned out, and use an air purifier . I think elliminating ANYTHING that can trigger it to be worse is a good plan of action.

This really does suck though!!!

This is a post from the main dizziness withdrawal thread on this website:

"A possible explanation for dizziness following SSRI discontinuation.

Paul F Smith, Cynthia L Darlington

Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, School of Medical Sciences, University of Otago Medical School, Dunedin, New Zealand.

Journal Article: Acta oto-laryngologica (impact factor: 0.98). 02/2010; 130(9):981-3. DOI: 10.3109/00016481003602082

Abstract

Dizziness is the most commonly reported symptom of abrupt discontinuation from the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) category of antidepressants. The reported dizziness is exacerbated by even slight head movement, and therefore is likely to be vestibular in origin. The SSRIs most implicated are those with short half-lives and which are most selective for serotonin (as opposed to noradrenaline), e.g. paroxetine and sertraline. Since the vestibular nucleus complex (VNC) has an abundance of serotonin receptors, the abrupt withdrawal from an SSRI is likely to have a substantial impact on the electrophysiological activity of neurons within it. Here we suggest that the abrupt withdrawal from an SSRI is likely to cause a sudden decrease in serotonin in the VNC, which will disrupt the function of VNC neurons bilaterally, causing dizziness without vertigo.

Basically what I'm trying to say is, there is no possible way to analyse the condition of the inner ear - you go based on symptoms and how it's functioning in relation to stimuli in testing. My right inner ear isn't working properly. It's been said it's labrynthitis, or Vestibular neuronitis. However there is no actual way to guarantee that diagnosis.

People who go on cruises for a long time and come off can experience a symptom identical to this - Mal-Debarkment syndrome I think it's called. However they have no inflammation of the inner ear. The doctors can't explain the reason and cause behind it. There have been some correlation to it occurring more women and having a higher occurrence in anxious people.

Based on my timeline of events (I did experience some lightheaded, perhaps 'dizzy' spells at rare occasions the first few months of cold turkey) and then to full blown rocking/swaying its highly likely the withdrawal has affected my inner ears functionality. Also the tinnitus, eye floaters and balance and anxiety with several other minor symptoms.

I cannot tolerate alcohol anymore (I use to be a huge fan), nor can I tolerate coffee.

By the way - you should stay away from the antihistamine. There are plenty of topics on here on WHY antihistamines reduce the symptoms of withdrawal. The fact your dizziness subsides with use of antihistamine is a massive indicator that it's withdrawal!

Link to comment

Ahh that's so interesting! I didn't abruptly stop I weaned. Maybe I didn't do it slowly enough. Probably not :(

Do the studies state that this can eventually go away?

I just read the post in regards to antihistamines. I will definitely want to get off of them eventually. For now, I feel okay taking them, as I experience no adverse reactions. But I know in my mind that coming off sooner than later will be best!

Do you feel your issues will ever go away?

Well it's reccommended to do 10% reduction every month or so. Some people need longer and smaller reductions. Everyone is different.

Some websites and study quotes say that the only way to get rid of symptoms is to reinstate, however that isn't recommended if you're longer than 4 weeks out from stopping. People do say on here we do heal though eventually. Some heal in a few weeks. Some it takes years :(

Kalina,

We have people do okay with reinstatement here as far as a year out. Much further out than 4 weeks and we have ad great success with RI, but we suggest that people start low and slow so that if it does not work, the symptoms will not stick around (also consult with your withdrawal knowledgeable doc. The truth is that the further out you are from stopping, the lower the chance it will work. Medical studies have been shown lately to have much data not to be exactly as says. I can only go by what I have seen others go through here. Even if you are beyond this and for others reading this thread, I wanted people not to despair, I have seen god luck up to around 4 months. I RI on a different med at 4.5 months, and I did wonderfully. Just an FYI!

Be well!

Skeeter

Current meds: Lexapro 20mg, Valium 6.25mg
Current status: September 2018 forced to go down to 10mg of Valium/Diazepam from around 15mg, with the plan to have me totally of in 2 more months. I was not given a chance to give input at tapering at this speed, please go much, much slower. Luckily I found a new doctor, but was thrown off course by my rapid taper, as of 2/19 am down to 6.25mg, and am stable. Will update with dates of taper ASAP.

I am NOT a doctor. My opinions are just that- MY opinions, based on my personal experiences and research, but your experience and reactions may differ greatly, we are all different! I maintain that a doctor educated in withdrawal is the best place to get info or to get the "go ahead" before changing your medications in any way!

This has really been keeping me in a constant state of panic. This all started on and off maybe two years ago. It is really bad right now. My right cheek is super red and burning hot. It happens almost every night. It's barely pink during the day. I will also have flair ups where my right ear gets super red and hot also.

I fear this isn't anxiety or prolonged WD (been off almost 3 years. Have had this on and off for around two) but may be something far worse. It does seem. To happen during periods in my life that are very stressful though. I know flushing is common in anxiety but I can't find anything about anyone having it affect soley one side of the face. Right now it's on fire and I'm so anxious. I sometimes feel burning on full face but it's always only visibly red on the right side. It's not a pain but a hot burning.

When I wake up my face is good. It alwayd is prominent red on the right side at night only. Burning red ear can happen throughout the day and happened today while out at a big social thing and I had a hat on which irritated it but not my other ear.

Tonight just happened while in a bath and it's been burning hot for over an hour now and only getting worse. I even feel burning in scalp and chin now.. All right side!

I am having no other health symptoms outside of a hyperthyroid swing which I'm on medication for and this happens when thyroid is completely Normal as well. I hate this.

I'm very sacred this is a rare diseases called relapsing polychondritis or lupus.

Anyone else. Ever had This? Thanks for reading.
