Dizziness, vertigo, light-headedness, rocking or swaying sensations

squirrel

Recommended Posts

I've had the sudden dizzy/lightheaded feelings at times, when sitting down and standing/walking, usually lasting a few seconds. I've also had days where I've felt dizzy and light headed for hours, usually corresponding with an increase in other symptoms.

When I used to travel and would get jetlag, one of my symptoms used to be a sensation that the ground was moving under my feet, like being on a boat. I've seen the term 'boaty' on a benzo board and was thinking this might be what this sensation is called.

I haven't had this boaty kind of dizziness in withdrawal, but I wonder if anyone else here would describe their sensations like being on a moving boat.

How is everyone? How still dizzy? I just want a timeframe of how long mine might last?

Itzakadoozee.  I'm not sure if anyone can give you a time frame as it is so individual in that respect , however I can say from my own experience that my dizziness lasted approximately 12 - 18 months. Now, totally gone.

Many SSRI's and SSNRI's over 20 years. Zoloft for 7 years followed by Effexor, Lexapro, Prozac, Cymbalta, Celexa, Pristiq, Valdoxan, Mianserin and more - on and off. No tapering. Cold turkey off Valdoxan - end of May 2014

I've recently experienced dizziness.  The first time was just after boarding a train.  The second time (4 days later) lasted for the afternoon and at one stage I was walking across the lounge room and must have looked like I was drunk.  I wear multi-focal spectacles (have done for about 7 years now) and in my case it seems to be related to my brain not being able to process the transmitted signal from my eyes as quickly.  I did check my BP and it was okay.

My dizziness is not related to equilibrium or movement.. It is like I feel the sensation of a strong dizziness surounding my head. This symotom I always had. Before the drugs..during the drugs and after I am off..It is a kind of nerve pain I think..I think is related to muscles tention inflamating the nerves..someone here experience this kind of dizziness too?

I also experienced this for the first time after having had the flu vaccination on 14th Nov 2016.  It came and went the whole of last week and was very unnerving.

It can only be described as feeling as though I was about to pass out, but never actually do pass out.  Sometimes, it would feel as though my head was swaying very slightly.  Extremely odd sensation.  I think I can relate to the "boaty" feeling too.

Nov 25 2015 - Re-instated Cipralex @ 2.5mg daily. WD symptoms faded. Held at this dose and experienced "windows and waves". 12 Oct 2017 Reduced dose to 1.25mg. 13 Mar 2018 Reduced dose to 0.625mg (approx.). 16 April 2018 0mg. I have the rocking/swaying/internal pendulum sensation in time with my heart beat. I've had it now 1.5 years after stopping Citalopram cold turkey, and 1 year to the day that the symptom started after a panic attack.

How is squirrel now after all these years?

For a time it was one of the symptoms that bothered me the most to "will I ever be normal" levels. It has been only on the return of a recent wave that I remembered what it is to be SSRI dizzy but the rememberance means I had already forgot what it felt like.

I can vouch that the dizziness does go away on a sufficiently large time lapse (think of trimesters).

Name LostInTheWoods evokes both the feeling of getting stranded, forsaken and alone in an alien, hostile environment and the chance to experience awareness, tranquility and self-discovery during the experience. Just call me Lost in the posts.

February 2012. After a crisis, a crippling anxiety that culminated in a panic attack. Started 20 mg Paxil and Clonazepam.

Clonazepam left quickly in the 2nd attempt.

About about a year on 20 mg, begin tapering.

June 2014, after several weeks on 5 mg and trying to dose down, went CT.

May 2015.Anxiety came back again, went to psychiatrist back. Fluoxetine was tried and left because of bad reaction, returned to paroxetine. Start tapering in mid 2016.

December 2016. After like 2 months of going 2,5 mg, stopped paroxetine.

Truth to be told, descended into a downward spiral of caffeine, alcohol and masturbation.

January  26, 2017. Wave with some tinnitus that was fixed by a visit to the ENT.

April 21, 2017. Acid reflux at night was a stressor that triggered another wave.Vices have been put into check and only a drink or two a week remain.

By May 7 stabilized with a little anxiety left and some pains.

I have to ask, and it scares me, the fact I can't find many topics on these symptoms of this forum.

I see plenty of Benzo withdrawal people with these symptoms. However I know only of one thread started by Squirrel, which has just died in terms of activity. Squirrel has vanished also - does anyone know what happened to them?

I'm looking reassurance that people with anti-depressant withdrawal (protracted) do experience this symptom of mine that I've had going on 13 months now.

I experienced this for a couple months, like I drank a fifth of whiskey. It seemed to stop randomly, I forget how long ago though.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I have an appointment with a vestibular specialist next week, but I am thinking about cancelling. I think its going to be pointless, and the bill is going to cost me at the very least 1k with my insurance :( Im so sick of this crap, but I also truly believe this isn't going to be forever.

Sometimes I just get so scared, like I think what if it gets worse, what if this never ends? But then I realize that there is a chance of it going away forever, and getting a little better each day.

I often wonder if this is even withdrawal, but this came on 2-3 weeks after quitting celexa, and I did not have these issues before it. I suffered bppv while pregnant, and right before the dizziness came on, but I know what that feels like, and it goes away after 2 weeks with epley. This is different. I feel the pressure and congestion in my ears, and like Im on a boat.

Hi Kalinia,

I described my dizziness symptoms and how it started in IrishMonkey`s introduction. I`d like to add that worsening of the symptoms began after abrupt withdrawal of Venlafaxine. I also never had this issue before pills. In the past I had BPPV twice. That was something completely different. It happened in the bed and took a while. It went away in a few days after I did epley manuevers.

I don`t feel any pressure in my ears and my hearing is good. Only after taking Mirtazapine I hear a weird noise in my ears. I`m considering a visit at ear specialist`s, though.

I`m also wondering if this is a withdrawal symptom or it`s a psychogenic dizziness. As my psychotherapist says, I can`t do anything about it in boths cases. There is no special cure for it. Only time will show. In the meantime we must not focus our attention on it and feed our fears. It`s easier said than done especially when it`s been taking so long and it`s life ruining but it`s a simple truth.

Thank you for writing that. It truly makes sense, and is a wonderful way to think. I often imagine, if I didnt have the anxiety, would this still rule me as it does? Anxiety makes things a million times worse! I wish you nothing but a lifetime of healing , happiness and getting better and better each day! All the best! :)

Thanks for your wishes, Kalinia. I'm not good at coping with this kind of dizziness. Actually I think about it most of the time. I had it regardless of anxiety. Now I'm in a withdrawal and my anxiety is still strong.

How long have you had this dizziness? Sad thing is nobody knows when and if it disappears. I still have fear it will be forever.

I know, it is really hard to deal with :( I find that if I shake my foot or leg while sitting still, it helps me not notice it as much, since my body is in motion as well as my mind. I have had it for a year now. It started as general dizziness and ear pressure after a bppv attack  in February of last year. This was also 2 weeks after quitting celexa.  In october I had a severe moment of anxiety, and on came the in motion, on a boat, swaying in a pool on a raft feeling.

I feel that since we did not have this before the medication, that we just have to heal. Its not going to be forever. We will get through this. Have you though about trying vestibular rehab? I hear that can help with dizziness. I am considering trying that. Its just hard to believe this cant be withdrawl related since I have never had ear pressure or dizziness until a few weeks after stopping celexa.

I'd like to know if others are experiencing this as well. I'm going on a year of dizziness and now 5 months of rocking /swaying /boat feeling

How soon after you stopped Citalopram/Celexa did this symptom start - did it happen sudden;y out of the blue, or did you take a panic attack which brought it on, like me? Are you any better? Has the sensation changed at all?

Does anything make you better, or do certain situations or times make you feel worse? I do feel better in the morning, then it starts getting bad around 12pm.

It happened about 3 weeks after stopping celexa. I had a Bppv attack and then general dizziness and progression of ears becoming super congested.

I honestly am not sure if I'm any better or if I've just become a little more used to it. I hate the new rocking boat sensation though. That has only been since October after several days of a ton of stress.

Mine is consistent. I notice it when I'm still. I don't notice it much when I'm in motion. Some periods of time definitely worse than others.. And then some days where it's way more manageable

I think that vestibular rehabilitation is worth trying. My cousin who`s been on ADs for 17 years has mild balance issues from time to time. She do excercise to intentionally improve her balance.

Kalinia, have you seen any doctor due to your balance issues? Your problems sound like a true vertigo.

BPPV and panic attack can trigger psychogenic dizziness. I was originaly positive for vestibular test.

When I think things can`t be any worse, I developed tinnitus in my left ear. Really amazing!

I had this pretty badly and didn't go to the doctor because I put it down to withdrawal. Turns out that I had an ear infection in one ear and a bunch of hardened wax in the other. I had antibiotics & my ears syringed and it sorted the dizziness.

I still get that dull, plugged ear sensation from time to time.

March 2003 took two sartroline tablets after a traumatic incident and had a reaction so stopped.  I am not sure now whether what I had for the next 18 months was WD after the reaction or the emotional fallout from the traumatic event.  Some of it was very similar to WD in hindsight.

February 2014 - Took five pristiq (50mg) tablets and three Ativan and had a severe reaction.
Extreme withdrawal symptoms for three weeks compounded by visit to naturopath -

One week later took 900mg St John's Wort x 3 daily for six weeks - more negative effects and suspected serotonin syndrome - before tapering over three weeks. Last tablet late May 2014.

Waves and windows cycle of recovery with longer windows and manageable waves.

May 2015 - already in a mild wave, following a usual pattern, I took clarithromicin and amoxicillin for two weeks for a sinus infection which I also seem to have had quite a reaction to.

February 2016 - Feeling much better.  I still have waves and windows but they are manageable.  I'm largely enjoying life again.

Well I just went to a vestibular specialist yesterday. What a waste of $1200. Several hours of tests that sucked! Induced dizziness. Saw the Dr for about 6 minutes after. All tests can back normal ( I still have to get an mri but Dr says pretty much guarantee it will be normal.)

So in that time period this specialist who is supposed to be THE dizzy Dr to see, told me that he has no idea what is wrong with me. Said he sees patients all the time who are like me but has no idea what's causing it. He told me to take. Klonopin twice a day! He said don't read about klonopin online to just take it! And take more if I need it. That I won't get addicted and will be totally fine on that small of a dose. Oh and I have options! If that isnt adequate I get to try zoloft and then if that isn't adequate I get to try celexa again! ( because my body may simply need it)

Ugh.

As soon as he offered klonopin I was done listening. My husband was there too. He Is also suffering terribly since quitting celexa a year ago. We both just looked at each other defeated.

I asked him if he thinks this could. Be Withdrawl. He said good question but he's never seen WD last this long.

Overall I'm glad I don't have any of the big Issues those tests can find, but I'm also very upset I paid so much to simply be offered drugs.

Wow, $1200 flushed down to the toilet! It took several hours? What tests did they do? I spent around 30 minutes at specialist neurologist`s. Luckily in our country it`s covered by health insurance.

OMG, I`m not suprised he suggested Klonopin! It`s a vestibular supressant and strong anxiliotic. It`s simply nonsence you won`t get addicted. My psychiatrist told me I couldn`t be addicted to 0.5mg and it wasn`t true. Did the doctor tell you what to do when Klonopin stops working (when you hit the tolerance)? I bet he didn`t. I`m pretty sure if I hadn`t taken Clonazepam, I wouldn`t have balance issues today. I`ll never take it again, I don`t want to risk memory impairment and dementia when I`m old.

I had to wear goggles and spin in a chair in a dark chamber thing. Then some rotational position testing.. Then balloons in my ears filled with cold and hot water (ugh) and an extensive hearing test.

Sadly the 1200 is after my insurance! Crazy huh? And I still need an mri! Ugh.

Nope he just said take it and stop whenever I want! Crazy!

I haven`t been through such a sophisticated testing.

Ha ha, stop it whenever you want! Addiction to Clonazepam can occur after two weeks of regular use. I was tempted to take it to find out if my balance issues go away. I told my psychotherapist that if it doesn`t dissapear till the end of this year I will take it again because I don`t want to live with dizziness. He replied I wouldn`t do any help to myself. He also thinks that I`ll be doing better off all medication.

Anyways, it`s good all the tests showed up negative and I wish there will be nothing on MRI.

I'm really sorry you are struggling. This is such a hard thing to cope with. I recently took up ddp yoga and it is helping a lot with mental stability. I find keeping active helps take my mind off of the dizziness. Of course if I'm in a bad wave then nothing really helps besides time.

Yah it's crazy how he thinks these pills are Oh so safe! What a joke. It makes me really sad thinking of all the people who go to him and end up addicted to these pills and suffer.

I had the dizziness, sea legs feelings for about three or four months last summer / fall. It only got better when I started practicing meditation, to calm down my overactive mind. I truly believe that, as well as some other pesky symptoms I had were actually attributed to anxiety. Without the Paxil in my system after 14 years, my anxiety was a constant undercurrent. I'm glad to say I no longer have thiseeling, I know how scary and frustrating those symptoms are.

Been on Paxil 14 years. 40mg for the bulk of those.

20mg in 2014

10mg March of 2015 - then tapered to 5mg

Then to 2.5 to 1.5 - to 1mg, from Mar-August.

As of August 23 2015, I am flying without a net.  Paxil free!

WD symptoms since tapering mid- 2015:

Short temper, hostile. Brain zaps. Bruxism. Wild vivid dreams  Hives Food intolerance Lump in throat, . Joint pain. Knees, elbows.  Pain in feet. Numbness in hands. Shaking, like I'm cold. Trembling. Tremors, muscle twitches all over. Facial tics. Eye, lips. Head.  Floaters in my eyes. Severe Insomnia (between months 4-5)  then returned from March-October 2016. I'm sleeping better now. Dreams have returned to normal (month 7) High levels of anxiety when around large crowds or in large rooms. Intestinal spasms, heartburn.  Dizzy spells.  Panic/Anxiety Attacks suddenly developed months 8 out.  4 years out, 98% feeling back to normal.  (October 9 2019)

  • 1 month later...

Hi,

That is good to hear. I am struggling with this dizziness / vertigo / off balances / going to fall feeling so some time now and need some encouragement. How long would you say it lasted for you and if anything you did to ease it ?

Ty very much

This has been my main symptom. Dizziness.. Woozy... Off balance feeling like on a boat or raft on waves when I'm still.

It was terrible a few months ago. ( I have struggled with dizziness for a year and two months and the woozy boat feeling for about 5 months.) thankful to say that I havn't felt it for over a month. A great window. Now I'm in a wave of feeling it but no where near as bad as it once was. This truly makes me believe stronger that this will eventually go away. This all started for me 2.5 ish weeks after tapering off of celexa.

Glad to hear it got better for you. A year of constant dizziness is a long time.

Definitely had windows and waves thankfully (although low grade constant is pretty accurate but it was manageable in the windows) Summer was pretty good for me. I hope you have periods of relief soon. I know how terrible dizziness is. So over it. I also read you have congested ears I believe? I have that too :( I'm faithful in this won't be forever for us
