Pleasemakeitstop: Mirtazapine Withdrawal Tinnitus

Pleasemakeitstop

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am currently trying to taper off Mirtazapine but about 48 hours after last dose I am getting a high pitched noise/tinnitus at back of head and left ear.

Has anyone else had the same and how long did it last for?

Many thanks

I'm sorry you're dealing with that, I'm dealing with it as well from Buspar. From what I'm seeing on here, it goes away over time or at least settles down.

Buspur         Jan  2017 on and off.

Mirtazphine  Feb 2017 15mg once

Trazadone    Feb 2017 25mg once

Ambien        Feb 2017 5 mg once

Seroquel      Jan 2017 5mg once

Paxil            Feb 2017 5mg twice

                    Currently drug-free :)

Pleasemakeitstop -- Welcome to Surviving Antidepressants (SA)

I'm sorry to read that you're dealing with tinnitus and other head noises. That is a common withdrawal symptom. Nobody can tell you how long it will last. It could go away within a few days or weeks, or it might continue for months. Also, new withdrawal symptoms may arise.

Because your last dose was only 48 hours ago, the tinnitus will almost certainly go away if you return to taking the dose you "jumped" from. Take it as close as possible to the same time every day.

A few questions for you:

  • You took your last dose of mirtazapine on Feb. 23.  How many mg was that dose?

  • How did you taper off -- (i) all at once or (ii) in steps of gradually lower doses?

  • If you tapered in steps, what was your "maintenance" dose before your first decrease?  When did you make your first decrease?

  • If you tapered in steps, what can you remember about the doses at each step and how long you stayed at that dose?

A request: Would you summarize your history in a signature -- ALL drugs, doses, dates, and discontinuations & reinstatements, in the last 12-24 months particularly?

  • Any drugs prior to 24 months ago can just be listed with start and stop years.
  • Please use actual dates or approximate dates (mid-June, Late October) rather than relative time frames (last week, 3 months ago)
  • Spell out months, e.g. "October" or "Oct."; 9/1/2016 can be interpreted as Jan. 9, 2016 or Sept. 1, 2016.
  • Please leave out symptoms and diagnoses.
  • A list is easier to understand than one or multiple paragraphs.
  • You can find instructions in this topic: Please put your withdrawal history in signature
  • If you are using a phone or mobile device, you need to switch to the "full" or desktop version of the site. Instructions are in Post 9 and Post 10

It's very sad we must deal with tinnitus. I have it in left ear. It started to be persistent a week ago, two weeks after I stopped Buspirone. I'm tapering mirtazapine as well so I can't say what pill to blame. I hoped this annoying symptom would never appear.????

I've had tinnitus for about 18 months. It's not in my ears. It seems to come from inside my head, right in the middle of my brain. It was unbearable at first, but you get used to it after a couple of months. It's still there but really isn't a problem now.

2001: 20mg paroxetine
2003-2014: Switched between 20mg citalopram and 10mg escitalopram with several failed CT's
2015: Jan/ Feb-very fast taper off citalopram; Mar/ Apr-crashed; 23 Apr-reinstated 5mg; 05 May-updosed to 10mg; 15 Jul-started taper; Aug-9.0mg; Sep-8.1mg; Oct-7.6mg; Nov-6.8mg; Dec-6.2mg
2016: Jan-5.7mg; Feb-5.2mg; Mar-5.0mg;  Apr-4.5mg; May-4.05mg; Jun-3.65mg; Jul-3.3mg; Aug-2.95mg; 04Sep-2.65mg; 25Sep-2.4mg; 23Oct-2.15mg; 13Nov-1.95mg; 04Dec-1.75mg; 25Dec-1.55mg.
2017: 08Jan-1.4mg; 22Jan-1.25mg; 12Feb-1.1mg; 26Feb-1.0mg; 05Mar-0.9mg; 15Mar-0.8mg; 22Mar-0.7mg; 02Apr-0.6; 09Apr-0.5mg; 16Apr-0.4mg; 23Apr-0.3; 03May-0.2mg; 10May-0.1mg

Finished taper 17 May 2017.

thanks for the reply. sorry for the late reply.

I reinstated in february and the symptoms went away after speaking to doctor.

But I can no longer take this nightmare drug as it makes make head explode with noise and ears ring.

So again I came off it 4 days ago. This time at last dose 3.75. My maintenance dose was 15 mg.

This time my left ear is just making a high pitched noise.so it looks like i will have to reinstate again.

Just cant get off this. i am just going to go extremely slowly down to 2mg and 1mg

Maintenance does is 15 mg.

I have only been on this since december 19. But have tried several times to get off it.

One doctor says just stop other doctors say 15mg ever other day.

When tapering i do a week a lower dose but find it difficult to got under 3.75

thanks for your help
