People really have permanent sexual dysfunction after taking SSRIs? Really?

I've never taken SSRIs personally, but apparently there are some people that experience PSSD and it NEVER goes away.  I just don't get it.  Why do doctors even allow this stuff to be prescribed if it does something like that?  If that happened to me I seriously don't think I would be able to live like that...that just sounds awful.  The fact that that's even a thing makes me so mad...

June 2013 - Vyvanse 40mgs and Adderall 20mgs

March 2015 - Concerta 36mgs and Seroquel 50mgs

August 2016 - Vyvanse 50mgs

November 2016 - Current - Vyvanse 60mgs, Seroquel 50mgs (I cut them in half and only take 25mgs), Wellbutrin 450gs (I hardly ever take it)

Current Withdrawal Symptoms: Very abnormal pins and needles/bubble feeling on the right and backside of my head (thought it was a brain tumor, so got both an MRI and CT Scan that came back normal), random waves of extreme depression sometimes with suicidal thoughts, tired most of the time, get anxious for seemingly no reason, sometimes hard to sleep.

September 6, 2021 - Completely off all drugs.  Still smoke a lot of cannabis.  Take Animal Pak, L Tyrosine, and Organic Mucana as supplements.

I have had PSSD for over 8 years. I think about killing myself a lot. No doctors will believe me. I have numb genitals, pleasureless orgasms, and no sex drive whatsoever. It is a living nightmare. I have complained about this problem to over 15 doctors over an 8 year perioid, and only one believed me, as he had some ex patients who also suffered PSSD. But when i pressed the issue about PSSD he got nasty and didnt want to talk about it. Doctors dont like talking about it. I have been left to rot. I am very angry.

Last took an SSRI January 2009.

Last took a benzodiazepine May 2015.

Free from all prescription medication since May 2015.

Everything has mostly healed apart from PSSD which is still very bad, and is my most distressing symptom. Also i have developed some allergy problems/ sensitivities to things in the environment which i believe was possibly caused by the prescription medications (SSRI's and benzos).

Yes, it can persist forever. I took an SSRI just for a few days 2 years ago and suffer from the Pssd syndrome. Often the PSSD syndrome also causes that the brain is not able to evoke feelings anymore. Many people who hear this the first time think that it's just depression because they can not imagine such a cruel condition and they don't WANT to believe it.

sexual issues from SSRIs is a well known side effect, they are given to sex offenders in prison as part of their rehab (they have the option to take them or not)

any dr who claims it's not an issue is either an idiot or is lying

  • pysch med history: 1974 @ age 18 to Oct 2017 (approx 43 yrs total)
  •  Drug list: stelazine, haldol, elavil, lithium, zoloft, celexa, lexapro(doses as high as 40mgs), klonopin, ambien, seroquel(high doses), depakote, zyprexa, lamictal- plus brief trials of dozens of other psych meds over the years
  • started lexapro 2002, dose varied from 20mgs to 40mgs. First attempt to get off it was 2007- WD symptoms were mistaken for "relapse".
  •  2013 too fast taper down to 5mg but WD forced me back to 20mgs
  •  June of 2105, tapered again too rapidly to 2.5mgs by Dec 2015. Found SA, held at 2.5 mgs til May 2016 when I foolishly "jumped off". felt ok until  Sept, then acute WD hit!!  reinstated at 0.3mgs in Oct. 2106
  • Tapered off to zero by  Oct. 2017 Doing very well.
  • Nov. 2018 feel 95% healed, age 63
  • Jan. 2020 feel 100% healed, peaceful and content
  • Dec 2023 Loving life! ❤️ with all it's ups and downs ;)

If that's really the case I don't see why the FDA or w/e would allow doctors to prescribe these things.  Doesn't seem the least bit ethical.  Doctors are literally letting peoples lives be ruined by this crap...seriously...

Ssri can make you unable to feel romantic love and can leave you completely asexual. It happened to me. And it is a persistent problem, but it is better to just move on because you can get depressed or obsessed with it... better accept it and move on.

About me ------------------------ College student with a history of anxiety, excessive worrying and health anxiety.

April 2014 - May 2015----------    Prozac 20mg On and Off.  Second time on it I developed apathy, changes in personality, asexuality.

May 2015  -   July 2015-----------------  Tappering off prozac. Still no feelings, anhedonia, apathy, no libido, asexuality.

Current symptoms--------  pssd (asexuality in my case). Anxiety and depression developed some months afer stopping prozac, could have been caused by obsessing and beating myself up too much when I found myself unable to like girls again. The best thing to do with pssd (which in my case is asexuality) is accept it and move on.

Yes I would consider another being r*ping my life away unethical. Doctors get their mortgages paid, in fact many a mortgage has been paid.

The emotional brain damage alongside the sexual damage is yes it is. It is grossly unfair, I wish my life back so badly everyday to the point I wish I was dead everyday but more importantly I just want my life back everyday.

It is permanent brain damage, sexual r*pe for life.

It has been about 7 years now for me. It is not going to heal. The sexual interference's with 'antidepressants' and other psych drugs have been well documented since at least the 1960's.

Possessing another human beings sexuality for any belief or money is a grave human rights abuse.

Make no mistake about it for some of us these horrific chemicals vapourize the urge to merge.

To do that to a person is beyond a crime.

Thought for the day: Lets stand up, and let’s speak out , together. G Olsen

We have until the 14th. Feb 2018.

URGENT REQUEST Please consider submitting  for the petition on Prescribed Drug Dependence and Withdrawal currently awaiting its third consideration at the Scottish Parliament. You don't even have to be from Scotland. By clicking on the link below you can read some of the previous submissions but be warned many of them are quite harrowing.

http://www.parliament.scot/GettingInvolved/Petitions/PE01651

Please tell them about your problems taking and withdrawing from antidepressants and/or benzos.

Send by email to petitions@parliament.scot and quote PE01651 in the subject heading. Keep to a maximum of 3 sides of A4 and you can't name for legal reasons any doctor you have consulted. Tell them if you wish to remain anonymous. We need the numbers to help convince the committee members we are not isolated cases. You have until mid February. Thank you

None of the published articles shed light on what ssri's ... actually do or what their hazards might be. Healy 2013.

This is so true, with anything you get on these drugs, dependance, tapering, withdrawal symptoms, side effects, just silent. And if there is something mentioned then their is a serious disconnect between what is said and reality!

"Every time I read of a multi-person shooting, I always presume that person had just started a SSRI or had just stopped."  Dr Mosher. Me too!

Over two decades later, the number of antidepressant prescriptions a year is slightly more than the number of people in the Western world. Most (nine out of 10) prescriptions are for patients who faced difficulties on stopping, equating to about a tenth of the population. These patients are often advised to continue treatment because their difficulties indicate they need ongoing treatment, just as a person with diabetes needs insulin. Healy 2015

I believe the ssri era will soon stand as one of the most shameful in the history of medicine. Healy 2015

DIdn't someone link to a phone number to call the FDA?  If I was you I would file a complaint.  I know you're from the UK but seriously this is not ok.

Bro I would watch this video if I were you.  Skip to the 7 minute mark.  There are people who apparently have had this for 18 years...

is 9 years permanent?  if so then yes op question answered

WARNING THIS WILL BE LONG
Had a car accident in 85
Codeine was the pain med when I was release from hosp continuous use till 89
Given PROZAC by a specialist to help with nerve pain in my leg 89-90 not sure which year
Was not told a thing about it being a psych med thought it was a pain killer no info about psych side effects I went nuts had hallucinations. As I had a head injury and was diagnosed with a concussion in 85 I was sent to a head injury clinic in 1990 five years after the accident. I don't think they knew I had been on prozac I did not think it a big deal and never did finish the bottle of pills. I had tests of course lots of them. Was put into a pain clinic and given amitriptyline which stopped the withdrawal but had many side effects. But I could sleep something I had not done in a very long time the pain lessened. My mother got cancer in 94 they switched my meds to Zoloft to help deal with this pressure as I was her main care giver she died in 96. I stopped zoloft in 96 had withdrawal was put on paxil went nutty quit it ct put on resperidol quit it ct had withdrawal was put on Effexor... 2years later celexa was added 20mg then increased to 40mg huge personality change went wild. Did too fast taper off Celexa 05 as I felt unwell for a long time prior... quit Effexor 150mg ct 07 found ****** 8 months into withdrawal learned some things was banned from there in 08 have kept learning since. there is really not enough room here to put my history but I have a lot of opinions about a lot of things especially any of the drugs mentioned above.
One thing I would like to add here is this tidbit ALL OPIATES INCREASE SEROTONIN it is not a huge jump to being in chronic pain to being put on an ssri/snri and opiates will affect your antidepressants and your thinking.

As I do not update much I will put my quit date Nov. 17 2007 I quit Effexor cold turkey.

I'm wondering if there have been any class-action lawsuits brought against makers of SSRI's. You'd think that some enterprising law firm would see merit and $$$ in such a suit. I'm yet another PSSD casualty whose sex organs are pretty much useless after 13 years on Paxil. It's sickening to think how many suffer from this pharmaceutical castration.

Paroxetine: rapid taper, off completely as of 4/15/17
