I'll be interested to see what you decide about dropping/holding.  Glad you are feeling okay despite the hiccup.  Don't you hate the sinking feeling when you realise you've got it wrong :blink:?

2010  Fluoxetine 20mg.  2011  Escitalopram 20mg.  2013 Tapered badly and destabilised CNS.  Effexor 150mg. 

2015 Begin using info at SurvivingAntidepressants.  Cut 10% - bad w/d 2 months, held 1 month. 

Micro-tapering: four weekly 0.4% cuts, hold 4 weeks (struggling with symptoms).

8 month hold.

2017 Micro-tapering: four weekly 1% cuts, hold 4 weeks (symptoms almost non-existent).

2020 Still micro-tapering. Just over 2/3 of the way off effexor. Minimal symptoms, - and sleeping well.
Supplements: Fish oil, vitamin C, iron, oat-straw tea, nettle tea.

2023 Now on 7 micro-beads of Effexor. Minimal symptoms but much more time needed between drops.

Thanks Karen, the 'oh no' moment really sucks. Still I've had a few really good days - some nice things happened - and all good. All the way down it's been a balance, but my priority is to feel well. The degree of 'well' determines the next drop. Now that I've got the worst side effects either minimised or mitigated, I tend to wait longer than many people would, plus take smaller drops. (I wish I'd done this with my previous lexapro taper, but I never really got to resolving my side effects then, so I guess it was a whole different situation.) Anyway, thank heavens for great physical therapists who know when they're beaten and refer you on!

 

So this week nice things happened and things are looking good. One not-great thing happened but I'm in such a good place that I can see that not-great is better than the really-awful alternative, so even the not-great is a good result this week. That tells me it was a good time to drop!

 

I hope I can go down again in a month or so, but if not then so be it.

My week is still going well, no noticeable effects from the drop. So far.

Feeling pretty well. Ok that's not really the case - I have a shocking cold - but my mood is fine.

 

Ten days since the drop. Think I've got away with it. Suggests that the long wait at 33mg was the right thing to do. I'll see if my doctor will give me my next couple of scripts over the phone. Plan is to do the next drop on schedule at 4 or 6 weeks, either to 29 or 30mg.

Still going well. I'm having lots of headaches though and my jaw is aching a bit so I guess I'm still clenching, despite the recent botox. :( I've had a nasty cold so maybe that's set me off again. 

 

I haven't managed to ring my doctor yet (not a real problem as I've still got some pills left plus a repeat). But when I do I'll go down again to 29, since this drop was imperceptible. Then 27 and 25 and I'll sit on 25 for a while, like I did with the 3 month sit at 33mg.

 

Almost at 2 years since I started to come down from 100mg. Two more to go? Who knows. I badly want off these meds, but I keep reminding myself that I've prioritized feeling normal and functioning so that's the way the cookie crumbles. (I've had symptoms, but minor or if not minor, at least short-lived.)

I haven't been here at SA for a few weeks and I missed your post - sorry.

 

I'm doing very well. I've held this drop for longer than intended because I didn't get to the doctor in time to get another script, so I had to fill the repeat I had. This drop was imperceptible and while I had a wobble last week it was to do with an external situation and I'm feeling fine now. The headaches/clenching have gone now too so the botox is doing its job.

 

All good, onward and downward!

I thought I'd updated here a week or so ago, but apparently it vanished into nothingness!

 

I've just picked up 6 weeks worth of 29mg and 27mg sertraline. I've also got a repeat for the same of each again so I'll see how it goes. Will drop down in a day or so to 29mg.

 

Going quite well. Feeling a bit overwhelmed with stuff happening but I'll get there.

20 March 2016 0.25 Mg * 2 Xanax for one week. 1 April 2016 Tranxene 5 mg and Fevarin but bad reaction for 5 days.4 April 2016 25 Mg Amitryptiline + 6 MG bromazepam at night

Started tapering Bromazepam 6 days later reached up to 3 MG in 10 days and withdrawal. Pdoc asked to go 6 MG again.

10 of May started Remeron 15 MG and started tapering Bromazepam again.

Update. All going well. This drop was imperceptible - I think the small drops and long holds are working well for me. I'm planning to do the full 6 weeks on this drop and then dropping again.

Thanks Scallywag. I'm sure the doc/pharmacist think it's unnecessarily slow but it's working for me.

 

I'm going to be traveling through the UAE next year so I want to be on a 'normal' dose, ie half a tablet, not weird compounded doses like I'm on now. It's one of their restricted meds so I don't want it to be complicated. Better to have all my paperwork in order and pills that are recognizable. That's my plan, and I'm on track for it. If it means a longer sit on 25mg, well, I'm getting good at long holds. :) At least 25mg is a cheap and easy hold.

 

Some of my holds have been unnecessarily long, but that's been reflective of other stuff - not dropping during a time of external stress, being too lazy/busy to get to the doctor for a new script. Since I'm on top of the side effects now, there is no urgency to get to the finish line.

 

All good, doing well.

My son has just started his taper from 50 mg. Started at 100 mg and first drops to 75 mg and then 50 mg were fine but further drop alternating to 25 mg and 50 mg (which I now know was the wrong thing to do) was a nightmare as anxiety and depression set in a few days later (he'd never been depressed before in his life).

 

Thank you for sharing your story. It reminds me to be patient.

I've sat on 25mg for a while now. I realise that I haven't updated my sig line for a bit! I have been to Europe for a holiday and I didn't want to mess that up, hence the hold. It'll be time to go see the doc again shortly for a new prescription. I'm thinking, since I barely notice the drop these days, that I'll stay with the 2mg drop for the next few drops. I'm uncertain how accurately a compounding pharmacy can make small cuts, but I'll ask them next time I go in. In the meantime the 2mg drops have been pretty painless (though I tend to stay on the dose for longer than the 4 weeks so maybe that contributes).

Forgot to add, my bruxing is playing up a bit again. I had a botox treatment for it a while back and it's clearly worn off. I've always bruxed, but the SSRIs make it worse and I'd hoped that by this stage I'd be low enough for it not to be an issue. I'll give it a few weeks as it isn't bad and I've been traveling, which might make things a bit worse - jet lag etc. If it is still bothering me in March I'll do the botox thing again.

Have just discovered that I was accidentally on a much lower dose for some time (maybe 3 months) than I'd realised. When I thought I was on 27 and 29mg, it turns out I was on about 10mgish. Once I got to the next drop, I started to take half of a 50mg tablet. This means that what really happened was this: 31, 10, 9, 25, which I've been on now for several months.

 

(Bummer, that I only found out after already having gone back to 25!!! If I'd found out before going to 25 I'd have stayed on 9 for a few months extra, but be a long way closer to being off!)

 

So now I don't know what to do. I've been well. I wouldn't have attempted a drop like that, but it was fine. (I wasn't *off* though, just reduced.)

 

Or, maybe it was okay. Maybe this gives me confidence to make a schedule to get off the rest of this in 12 months. Hmm, that would look like this:

23, 19, 15, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. That's 14 months. Hmmm.

That was deliberate, based on a much bigger drop without issue and the realisation that at best it will have been 3.75 years of tapering, which seems long enough. :) But mainly the bruxing became an issue again at 25mg so I want to get down to a point where I can give up the Botox treatments.

 

You think it's a bad idea?

I'm on 23mg now, since Sunday. Had a few headaches but it's been hot here (over 100F, cooler now - 94 today but more humid) so it could well be that. Next week will be cooler and I'll feel better. I do not love hot weather! I had a month overseas after Christmas with freezing temperatures and that was so wonderful. I tried to soak up all the coolness but of course it doesn't last!

Well, it's been three years since I started to taper. Today I'm suffering with dental pain - I'm clearly bruxing badly. I sat on 23 mg for three months. I've been on 21 mg for a few weeks now so it's really disappointing to be bruxing so badly. Mood is fine. I need to get my next scripts organized.

Bubbles,  I brux a lot too and have worn out a couple of teeth. I have a silicone retainer and a silicone whitening tray, so when I am bruxing a lot I wear a pair to give my teeth a break. Still hurts my jaw, though. You may be able to get a silicone retainer in a pharmacy.

Chromium and magnesium supplements are supposed to help with bruxism (something to do with the jaw muscles)

Jan 2023: Venlafaxine XR 100 mg, Lorazepam 0.25 mg, Oestradiol 100 micrograms

Dec 2022: Venlafaxine XR 100 mg, Lorazepam 0.25 mg. HRT stopped for hysterectomy surgery 5 Dec 22 (potential clotting risk)

September 2022: Venlafaxine XR 100 mg, Lorazepam 0.25 mg, Oestradiol 100 micrograms, Progesterone 100 mg.

Apologies but I can't remember or find details at the moment, but I slowly reduced Venlafaxine and Lorazepam through 2020-2021-2022.

Jan 2022: HRT increased by GP for unknown reason to oestradiol patch 100 microg, progresterone 100 mg

June 2021: started HRT (oestradiol patch 50 microg, progresterone 100 mg). 

August 2020:  Made a 16% reduction in Lorazepam at psychiatrist's recommendation (1.25 mg) while holding Venlafaxine at 150 mg.

March 2019 - March 2020: Venlafaxine  XR tapered from  337.5 mg  to 150 mg (60% reduction), while continuing 1.5 mg Lorazepam.

March 2016 - January 2019: Mirtazapine taptered to 0, while continuing on 1.5 mg Lorazepam and 375 mg Venlafaxine XR.

Feb. 2015: 7.5 mg Mirtazapine + 1.5 mg Lorazepam + 375 mg Venlafaxine.

Hmm, I thought I'd posted a bit more recently. Obviously not! I'm currently on 18mg and will drop to 15mg next week or so. I'll sit on this next drop for a while. The bruxing has diminished, which is always good.

Back again. I sat on 18mg for longer than I'd intended. No particular reason. I've been on 15 mg now for a couple of weeks. All going well. I need to get another script for the next drop, but no rush.

 

This taper has been virtually painless. I've prioritized feeling well over anything else, and also a slow taper to try to avoid that crash that seems to often occur 2-3 months after a shorter taper is completed. It's taken a long time and still time to go.

Wow!  Reading your story is very inspiring.  Is there anything in particular that you feel has helped you achieve such a smooth taper?

-1/06 - 3/07 Cymbalta. Fast taper (essentially CT); withdrawal symptoms after 4 mos (didn't realize was WD)

-10/07: 100 mg Zoloft; 1 mg Klonopin - tapered off Klonopin after 4 mos. Several unsuccessful slow tapers of Zoloft; went up and down in dose a lot

-Spring 2013 back on 1 mg Klonopin to counter WD symptoms; switched over 5-6 mos from Zoloft to 35 mg citalopram
-Two attempts at slow tapering citalopram, always increased dose due to WD; also increased Klonopin to 1.25 mg in 2014, then to 1.5 mg in 2015

-8/17-9/17: After holding one year at 20 mg, feeling withdrawal symptoms due to stress - slowly increased to 25 mg. No change in symptoms after 6 months (? tolerance ?)  - decided to start citalopram taper February 2018 (still on Klonopin 1.5 mg).

Supplements: fish oil; magnesium; vitamin D3; curcumin

Wantrelief - no, not really anything in particular except crawling down slowly. I've been tapering for 2.5 years and I expect at least another half a year, more likely to be a year. (It will depend on what prescriptions I get and how the pharmacy can handle it but generally the bigger the drop, the longer I hold, and I'm not keen on big drops.) I had a big drop early - 25%, but it was essential to manage a bad side effect (bruxing). I dropped, had a few symptoms (but it was worth it - the side effects were bad), and held for months (6?) before doing anything else. Most of my drops were smaller than 10% and held for longer than the month. More recently I've had a couple of drops bigger than 10% but held longer than a month to compensate. I had an accidental big drop to about 12mg a while back due to a pharmacy error. I had no symptoms with the drop, but did have symptoms - increased bruxing - when I went up again. I didn't think I was going up, I thought I was going down... If I'd known, I'd have just stayed there, but I didn't and there you go. Such is life... 

 

Short answer, just being very slow and very patient. It's been hard to be that patient - I want *off*!!! - but I've prioritized feeling well and I want to give my brain a lot of time to adapt to the new reality.

Thanks for your reply.  Have you encountered any outside stressors during your taper?  This is what always seems to get me....I will taper slowly but then something stressful happens and it sends me into full on withdrawal mode.  I am curious how other people deal with this while tapering.

There have been some outside stressors along the way. Several times I've held longer than intended because something stressful had happened or I thought was coming up. If I'm in a busy semester and I know that several stressful assignments are coming up on top of a busy time at work, and the kids having exams... - I'll delay the drop until after that. That isn't always possible, of course, but sometimes I can see it coming and if I see it coming I always try to preempt it. Several times I've removed myself from stressful situations. Not necessarily always possible, but I've tried to make sensible judgments where I could.

 

I've had few withdrawal symptoms. I had some when I did the 25% drop - as expected, but they were outweighed by the pain of the side effects, so it was judgment call at the time and it was absolutely the right thing to do. Other than that I've only had a few small wobbles when I dropped, but my drops were small and the holds were long so it was never more than a wobble and it never lasted more than several days. I never dropped again until I'd been entirely symptom free for at least a few weeks, and often a couple of months.

 

I'm not sure I have much of value to suggest. :( Overall, I think I've been fairly lucky with this taper. Best of luck, wantrelief.

I've tried to be sensible, but there is always an element of luck - no major life crises/stresses, and sorting out the side effects took all of the pressure off and let me go down slowly (after the original 25% drop).

 

Weirdly, lately I feel like I'm on too much. I felt that way on the previous dose and I feel it again now. I can't explain why I feel that way, but I'll go and count how many pills I have left (ie, how many I've taken, lol) and see if it is time to drop again. I should get my next couple of scripts organised anyway.

Hello again

 

I've been on 11mg now for a couple of weeks, though I'm afraid that I neglected to make a note of the day I dropped! Bit silly. I tend to stay on my drop for a fairly long time so I'm not overly worried about it.  I continue to do very well and am not having any withdrawal effects and I am entirely stable. Although it's hard to explain why I feel this way, I still feel like I'm on "too much". I have managed to forget a few doses (possibly consecutively) but had no problems from it.

 

I will probably start to speed up my taper at this point to more like 1 month intervals.

 

I'm also happy to report that my bruxing appears to be completely under control. I am no longer having the botox injections and I have no pain and no evidence of bruxing. I probably still am bruxing - I always have, so I probably always will - but it's so minor now that it's effectively non-existent so that's good enough for me.

2005 St John's Wort / 2006-2012 Lexapro 20mg, 2 failed attempts to stop, tapered over 4.5 months in early 2012

January 2013 started Sertraline, over time worked up to 100mg

July 2014 Sertraline dropped from 100mg to 75mg, held for six months, slower tapering until 2019 22 Dec 3.2mg

2020 Sertraline 19 Jan 3.1mg, 26 Jan 3.0mg; 1 Mar 2.9, 7 Mar 2.8, May (some drops here) 24 May 2.5, May 29 2.4, June 21 2.3, June 28 2.2mg,  July 4 2.1mg, July 24 (or maybe a bit before) 2mg, early Nov switched to home made suspension; 29 Nov 1.8mg; approx 25 Dec 1.6mg)

Fascinating to re-read my own thread. I'd totally forgotten I had symptoms with drops early on and that they were bad enough to consider updosing. I'm glad that I held on - it's now 3.5 years of tapering. Interestingly I seem to have fewer symptoms now with drops, where theoretically they should be worse (if you look at the graph, I'm at the "pointy end" of my taper where the slope becomes very steep). It goes to show the value of writing things down. I still hope to be off in a year, but we will see.

 

Today's job is to arrange the next two doses.

I dropped today to 9mg. The pharmacist advises that they can do 0.5mg drops for me for future dosing so I will consider how this drop goes and see if it is time to move to 0.5 mg drops.
