Sound Mind, Sound Sleep by Barry Krakow

As this board knows, I am a big fan of Dr. Krakow. He is a sleep specialist who has apnea and who has suffered from insomnia.

Anyway, I finally purchased his book, the above title, after hearing so much about it and have started reading it today. This was before seeing my sleep doctor who wants me to take medication for my insomnia and see a psychiatrist to deal with the anxiety that I have understandably developed from not sleeping and adjusting to cpap treatment.

I refused so she insisted I see a CBT sleep therapist but essentially said I wouldn't succeed without medication.

Well, I think the above book is going to be alot more effective than any of her suggestions. And alot cheaper. I highly urge anyone who is still dealing with insomnia to buy this book. It is not the usual BS you read about. For example, this exert says it all:

"Among severe insomniacs, trying to fix sleep problems first with sleep hygiene is akin to asking a diabetic to coax his pancreas to make more insulin." His attitude is that there is more important work to done before they can be effective and that if they are annoying to not do them.

He does agree that you shouldn't do things like drink coffee before bedtime or watch the clock. But he feels many of the other rules are too simplistic.

My god, finally someone gets it as I thought if I hear these rules one more time, I am going to scream.

One of his biggest things is emotionally process issues before going to bed. It doesn't mean you solve the problems but simply write down all your concerns and then find a way to come to closure such as asking yourself if you are going to solve any problems before going to bed.

He feels that when you don't do that, it can cause tension in your body and result in all types of insomnia. I had never thought of that but he is so right in my opinion.

Anyway, it takes alot for me to get excited about a self help book. I am the biggest cynic there is. But this one is going to turn my life around.

If you're struggling with insomnia, give it a shot.
