That acid reflux pill may be causing your health problems

I use to think I knew how drugs were metabolized but I no longer know it... this happens all the time to me.

Too many drugs that need the same pathway can cause one drug to be too high or maybe both... I think I could be wrong.

Had a car accident in 85
Codeine was the pain med when I was release from hosp continuous use till 89
Given PROZAC by a specialist to help with nerve pain in my leg 89-90 not sure which year
Was not told a thing about it being a psych med thought it was a pain killer no info about psych side effects I went nuts had hallucinations. As I had a head injury and was diagnosed with a concussion in 85 I was sent to a head injury clinic in 1990 five years after the accident. I don't think they knew I had been on prozac I did not think it a big deal and never did finish the bottle of pills. I had tests of course lots of them. Was put into a pain clinic and given amitriptyline which stopped the withdrawal but had many side effects. But I could sleep something I had not done in a very long time the pain lessened. My mother got cancer in 94 they switched my meds to Zoloft to help deal with this pressure as I was her main care giver she died in 96. I stopped zoloft in 96 had withdrawal was put on paxil went nutty quit it ct put on resperidol quit it ct had withdrawal was put on Effexor... 2years later celexa was added 20mg then increased to 40mg huge personality change went wild. Did too fast taper off Celexa 05 as I felt unwell for a long time prior... quit Effexor 150mg ct 07 found ****** 8 months into withdrawal learned some things was banned from there in 08 have kept learning since. there is really not enough room here to put my history but I have a lot of opinions about a lot of things especially any of the drugs mentioned above.
One thing I would like to add here is this tidbit ALL OPIATES INCREASE SEROTONIN it is not a huge jump to being in chronic pain to being put on an ssri/snri and opiates will affect your antidepressants and your thinking.

As I do not update much I will put my quit date Nov. 17 2007 I quit Effexor cold turkey.

Hi thisismyname, I am glad to hear your validation on the effect of combining ppi and Ssri. Can you explain what you meant by saying it's better after ED? What is better and after what? Per my experience, ppi won't make you feel like zombie or has sex relted side effects. Those are typical effects of Ssri. Thanks!

I dont quite understand what you mean, I said I got ED from the interaction but it got slightly better afterwords.

You're right, the PPI on its own doesn't make you zombified or cause sexual problems directly. The PPI caused it indirectly by stopping celexa from being metabolized, increasing my blood content of celexa and causing the strong ssri side effects that I was feeling, and never felt before in my entire 7 years of taking celexa. There's a direct interaction between Celexa and Prilosec, Prilosec inhibits the enzymes that metabolize celexa. I hope that no one ever takes that combination again.

Summer of 2007 started celexa at age 15.

December of 2013 MISDIAGNOSED with GERD and was perscribed ppi's.

Mid May 2014 went C/T(Stupidly) off of my 40MG of celexa due to an interaction to the ppi's. This interaction left my body damaged.

First of July of 2014 went back on my celexa at 5 mgs..

Currently adjusting to 5 mg's of Celexa.

Current meds: Adderall Xr 30 mg/ Celexa 5mg/ Buspar 15mg/ Vistaril 25mg/ Fish oil 1000mg/ B12 100mcg/ Mulit-vitamin.

Risks associated with common acid-suppressing medications documented in series of studies

Date: May 11, 2010
Source: JAMA and Archives Journals
Summary:

Proton pump inhibitors, medications that suppress acid in the stomach, appear to be associated with fractures in postmenopausal women and bacterial infections in many patients, and higher doses do not appear any more beneficial for treating bleeding ulcers, according to a series of reports. An additional report finds that introducing guidelines for proton pump inhibitor use into clinical settings may reduce rates of inappropriate prescriptions.

http://archinte.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=415861

Failing the Acid Test
Benefits of Proton Pump Inhibitors May Not Justify the Risks for Many Users

Mitchell H. Katz, MD

Arch Intern Med. 2010;170(9):747-748. doi:10.1001/archinternmed.2010.64.

A staggering 113.4 million prescriptions for proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are filled each year, making this class of drugs, at $13.9 billion in sales, the third highest seller in the United States.1 These medications are effective for treatment of erosive and ulcerative esophagitis, Barrett esophagus, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), as well as for short-term treatment of ulcer disease, as part of a combination regimen for Helicobacter pylori eradication and for prevention of ulcers due to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.2 However, these indications do not account for more than a hundred million prescriptions. So it should come as no surprise that PPIs have been shown to be overprescribed3; between 53% and 69% of PPI prescriptions are for inappropriate indications.

I was prescribed Prilosec back when I had my initial "breakdown" because I was having severe insomnia accompanied by excurciating stomach pains. A colonoscopy and endoscopy revealed nothing more than mild esophagitis and a mildly herniated diaphragm. I took the Prilosec daily for months along with my ADs because my GI doc led me to believe they were no big deal .

It took me coming to this website to learn how Prilosec was likely exacerbating my depression. I also CT'd the Prilosec because I hadn't yet read up enough here to know better.

Since then, my chiropractor has twice done an adjustment on me for my herniated diaphragm by pressing down on it a certain way (without causing me any discomfort) and this  greatly reduced any acid reflux symptoms I may have been experiencing at the time.

I also remembered hearing somewhere that sometimes an "acid stomach" can mean that your stomach might actually need more, not less, acid. A few months ago, I started taking a daily tonic of 1-2 tsps. Bragg's Organic Raw Apple Cider vinegar with active enzymes, 1 tsp. organic maple syrup, and 8 oz. filtered water. It seemed to give me a "lift" when I first started drinking it. And, if I think about it, I'd stopped taking it regularly for a couple of weeks before the start of this current wave I'm in.

At any rate, it's never bothered my stomach, and may be boosting my nutritional profile.

I enjoy posting to threads that speak directly to my personal experience with AD w/d. The information on these boards is invaluable - I feel validated by what I read here, and believe wholeheartedly that what I learn here will (eventually) restore my life and sanity.

04/2013 diagnoses: severe insomnia, major depressive disorder, anxiety disorder, agoraphobia. PTSD (my diagnosis)

Original scripts: 30 mg mirtazapine (Remeron) (1x day), 75 mg Bupropion HCL (Wellbutrin) (2x day), and 0.5 lorazepam (1x day or as needed)

05/05/14: Onset of acute Wellbutrin withdrawal symptoms after haphazard "taper" of 6-8 wks.

05/10/14: Joined this site.

05/11/14: Reinstated approx. 25 mg Wellbutrin (1x day)

05/14/14: Switched to 12.5 mg Wellbutrin (2x day)

06/28/14: Changed lorazepam dosing to .25 mg 2x a day - seems to be reducing anxiety flare-ups

07/28/14: Dosing Wellbutrin in a (home made) solution form 12.5 mg (2x day) 08/15/14: Remeron 28 25.2 22.7 20.5 18.5 16.7 15.1 13.6 mg (home made) solution

05/16/15: Have been dosing lorazepam at .5 mg in the morning, .25 mg in the afternoon, and .25 mg at bedtime. Anxiety has increased somewhat, possibly due to tolerance.

Is the maple syrup to benefit the stomach or just to help the taste?

Hi btdt,

The maple syrup is for taste only. Any sweetener is purely optional. The Bragg's bottle also suggests honey or molasses.

Wishing you peace.

  • 1 month later...

another little gift from PPI drugs

I only looked it up after having a run on migraines this wk oddly enough the last one also caused a terrible pain in my one leg. I have been on 20 mg of pariet for over 3 wks for a suspected ulcer not confirmed... and 10mg one wk. The higher dose had me confused... spitting up white foam and eating a lot to keep the white foam under control.

I woke this morning unable to breath pain in the back of my head which is how the last two migraines started not the norm for me and the headache was not in the usual place....moved to a different side but I have had all sort just not for a long time.

"The way to do it is to first lower the dose, then extend the dosing interval to every other day, every third day, etc. Temporarily taking an H2-blocker (Zantac, Pepcid) and antacids can also help in getting off PPIs. PPIs include Prilosec, Prevacid, Protonix, Nexium, Dexilant, and Aciphex.

What does this have to do with headaches? PPIs can sometimes cause headaches directly, but more often they worsen migraines by interfering with the absorption of magnesium and other vitamins. This is a class effect, so switching from one drug to another will not help. Taking a magnesium, vitamin B12 and other supplements may help, but many of my patients, especially those who cannot stop the PPI medication require an intravenous infusion of magnesium and an injections of vitamin B12."

I have had no luck with magnesium supplements and H2 blockers make me suicidal ... the pill I am on is extended release and not to be cut.

Not sure what my next move is... any ideas?

Thanks so much for posting this information. I've been on a proton pump inhibitor for a couple of years now. Oddly enough, it all started because of lower back pain. It sounded crazy to me when my doc suggested that taking care of stomach acid might cure the terrible back pain I'd been experiencing, but it worked. Even now, if I miss a dose of Omeprazole, my back starts to hurt.

So, with this new information of course I want to get off this medication as well. And now I get to study another bad chemical miracle cure that's turned out to be a devil in disguise.

I appreciate this information.

Circa 1995 put on Paxil; Tried various meds over the years in an effort to get away from Paxil's side effects

06/29/13 Switched from 30mg Paxil to 10mg Lexapro

10/24/13 7.5mg Lexapro

12/01/13 6.25mg Lexapro

01/01/14 5mg Lexapro

03/01/14 3.75mg Lexapro

04/01/14 2.5mg Lexapro

05/01/14 1.25mg Lexapro

05/28/14 Med-Free

02/27/15 300mg Neurontin twice daily, .25mg to .50mg Xanax as needed

May 2015: 600mg Neurontin twice daily, .25mg to .50mg Xanax as needed

I had tried them all in 2004 one put me in hosp under observation the doc said he did not know what caused the problem I thought it was my new drug I was told no that was not it but to lay off it for a couple days and take it again.. I took the purple one the black and yellow one... and ended up with pariet... which I quit the same day I quit effexor. back on it again now and for the person who said it stopped the back pain... I don't understand it but think maybe it does help some with that which makes me think the back issue is in part caused by stomach problems.  I am now skipping doses as much as possible bland diet and trying other things.  I feel it makes me confused even at the lowest dose I am zombied out.  I can't wait to be rid of it.

Asked my doc to take me off the PPI.

He took me off the PPI and put me on Zantac, with the intent to stop taking the Zantac as soon as I am able.

Thanks again, so much, for pointing out the problems with Proton Pump Inhibitors. How maddening that some of their side effects mimic the side effects of withdrawal!

I tried it too in 2013 was given to me in emerg another doc double the dose shortly after I was suicidal.. thanks to my long history of drug reactions I knew right away it was a drug reaction looked it up and sure enough... it was.

My family doctor did not believe me and said quit taking it then... I was unable to sleep for white bubbles coming up my neck and going into my lungs even when I slept sitting up... I knew I could not quit.  So went around her to another doc and got it changed to pariet... which is still a pain in the ass.

Trying other things aloe vera juice and the licorice ... juice may be useful... not too taken with licorice as it doesn't seem to help me much. still trying to get off it

You need to taper them Ikam. I was taking omeprazole for many years and thought I couldn't get off

them because every time I tried the reflux was unbearable but I tapered over about 4 months I think,

and have been fine without them but I have to watch what I am eating.

Here is the topic for tapering them.

http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/4361-tips-for-tapering-off-stomach-acid-blockers-or-ppis-esomeprazole-lansoprazole-omeprazole/

**I am not a medical professional, if in doubt please consult a doctor with withdrawal knowledge.

Different drugs occasionally (mostly benzos) 1976 - 1981 (no problem)

1993 - 2002 in and out of hospital. every type of drug + ECT. Staring with seroxat

2002  effexor.

Tapered  March 2012 to March 2013, ending with 5 beads.

Withdrawal April 2013 . Reinstated 5 beads reduced to 4 beads May 2013

Restarted taper  Nov 2013

OFF EFFEXOR Feb 2015    :D

Tapered atenolol and omeprazole Dec 2013 - May 2014

Tapering tramadol, Feb 2015 100mg , March 2015 50mg

 July 2017 30mg.  May 15 2018 25mg

Taking fish oil, magnesium, B12, folic acid, bilberry eyebright for eye pressure.

My story http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/4199-hello-mammap-checking-in/page-33

Lesson learned, slow down taper at lower doses. Taper no more than 10% of CURRENT dose if possible

I never had acid reflux until I went into SSRI withdrawal. It is one of my most annoying symptoms because it also gives me asthma after I eat and I have to sleep propped up on all kinds of pillows. Mine was gone for a while and then recently reared its ugly head again. :/ I was able to cure it the first time without PPI's or zantac. For me zantac actually made my heart race like crazy. Faster than I've ever felt it beat last time I tried to get off ssri's and had GERD. So now I refuse to take anything like that again. I don't know if it was just because I was in bad withdrawal or what but I am not chancing that again. So some things I used that cured up the GERD for a while was...

Aloe Vera juice (tastes yucky but is so worth it!)

Tums/gaviscon

Very bland diet

Licorice tea (licorice has been found to heal esophagus lining. Just be careful not to drink too much because it can raise blood pressure.)

Chamomile tea

Honey (honey is an alkaline food and creates an alkaline environment in the stomach and coats the esophagus. Best taken before bed.)

Sleeping with head and upper torso elevated at least 6inches. (The stomach is more acidic at night and that is when the esophagus can get irritated the most.)

Sorry if I repeated some things that have already been said.

After doing all that for about a week or two I got it to go away and was able to eat and be normal for a while. It came back I think because I'm having a wave of symptoms anyway and it was bound to happen so here I go again!

I started out on zoloft 50 mg or 20mg (can't remember at that point) and was on it for a few months then decided I didn't want to take it because of the side effects so I cold turkey'd it and then was miserable and reinstated and all my symptoms went away and I felt normal. Stayed on it for a while tried lexapro 5mg for a month or two instead to see if I had less side effects. Then switched back to zoloft 20mg I think and weaned down to 6mg and jumped off too soon because it supposedly wasn't a "therapeutic dose" and was told it would be ok. Then I was going through withdrawal again so I reinstated again after about a month I switched to prozac because it's easier to wean off of supposedly. Weaned off over 9 month from 8mg Prozac. Then two months after stopping it on September 2, 2014. I went into withdrawal.

18 months off as of March 2, 2016

I don't really know what to do. I have been on PPIs on years, only stopped after Effexor...

At the moment acid reflux affects my throat badly, apparently even my ear pain was related to reflux. The doctor/laryngologist suggested to add gaviscon on top on PPI. I did last night, but paraesthesia was worse today morning. Could it be from Gaviscon?

Are you still taking the PPI?

What I've found helped: Turmeric and ginger capsules (some people chew a bit of fresh ginger) and deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) tablets.

It's important to get the deglycyrrhizinated form of licorice, licorice contains a compound that can affect your adrenals in a bad way.

Also, it could be you are sensitive to a type of food you are eating, such as dairy products, wheat, or artificial flavorings. You may wish to try an elimination diet

Digestive problems: Nausea, Diarrhea, Bloating, GERD

Food sensitivities

Gluten Sensitivity Vs. Celiac Disease Vs. Gluten Intolerance...

Histamine food intolerance

SCD/GAPS/Paleo Diets

or you may need some new bacterial helpers in your digestion:

Probiotics and gut health

my son was on nexium for 2 or 3 years - whilst he isn't on AD's he has slowly developed excessive bloating, gas, alternating diarrhea, constipation, some nausea and a host of other symptoms.  He had some testing done and has developed intolerances to gluten, eggs, yeast, vinegar, oats, mushrooms, dairy and others that i forget right now.  He stopped the nexium cold turkey - he has been on a very strict diet for nearly 2 months now and is doing much better - hopefully he will be able to gradually reintroduce foods ones at a time after 6 months.

when you read the product info it says they only should be taken for 6 weeks yet the doctors give them repeat after repeat prescriptions.

Started in 2000 - On 150mg most of the time, (but up to 225mg at highest dose for 6 months in the beginning)
Reduced off easily first time - but got depressed (not too much anxiety) 6 months later
Back on effexor for another 9 months.
Reduced off again with no immediate w/d - suddenly got depressed and anxious ++ again 3 or 4 months later.
Back on effexor - this time for 3 years
Reduced off over a month - 6 weeks later terrible anxiety - back on.
Rinse and repeat 4 more times - each time the period before the anxiety comes back got shorter and shorter
Jan - July 2012 75mg down to 37.5mg;, 8/3/12 - 35mg. 8/25/12 - 32mg. 9/11- 28mg, 10/2 - 25mg, 10/29 - 22mg, 11/19 - 19.8mg; 12/11 - 17m,
1/1- 15.5mg; 1/22 -14mg, 2/7 14.9mg, 2/18 - 17.8mg - crashed big time: back to 75mg where i sat for 2 years....

4th  March 2015 - 67.5mg;   31st March - 60mg;  24th April - 53mg; 13th May - 48mg; 26th May - 45mg;  9th June - 41mg; 1 July- 37.5mg; 20 July - 34mg; 11 August - 31mg; 1st Sept - 28mg;  1st Dec - 25.8mg;  28th Dec - 23.2mg; 23rd Jan-21.9mg; Feb 7th- 21mg; March 1st - 20.1mg, March 30th - 18mg

I'm wondering if someone can give me advice of whether a PPI vs H2 blocker would be better to take for a bad case of gastritis?  I've tried natural remedies but they don't seem to be doing the trick and am thinking of taking one for a short time to help heal.  But I don't want to take one that would make my withdrawal worse.  I wasn't sure if the H2 blocker would be worse because of antihistamine properties or if it doesn't really matter.  Thank you!

Hi, Jen. I can't answer that question. If you read this topic from the beginning, you will see sometimes what you're eating is causing the gut problem. You might find if you eliminated dairy, for example, your symptoms ease.

I did read this topic from the beginning and have been through a strict elimination diet. I'm aware of what foods cause issues for me. Just thought I'd see if there were any current opinions on short-term PPIs vs H2 blockers.

Which ever you choose low dose is one thing to keep in mind... I think both are over the counter now... have you tried any probiotics.? there are a few to look at I find they have helped my gut a lot... take read on that thread is my first suggestion... for myself I would use anything else first.. pepto tums even.. soda... kefir  am just not a fan of either of these types of drugs but I know sometimes they are a must.

The problem with both is our bodies adapt to them quickly and then they are hard to stop... still I have needed them I prefer pariet as it is the only one that did not cause a drug reaction for me. All the other ppi I reacted badly to but we are all different and it could be your the complete opposite. this is just my personal experience .

peace.

WARNING THIS WILL BE LONG
Had a car accident in 85
Codeine was the pain med when I was release from hosp continuous use till 89

Thanks btdt!  I've tried a few probiotics in the past, most recently Prescript Assist.  I haven't heard of Pariet before.  I've been trying every natural route possible but the gastritis is pretty painful and causing me to lose weight quickly.  But I'd like to avoid any drug reactions so I'll keep trying.

I actually used H2 blocker to help with PPI withdrawal, I used PPI for 16 years before switched to H2 blocker as my doctor told h2 blockers are not as strong as PPIs which I also found from googling. H2 blockers blocks 95% of what PPIs do. I stopped H2 blocker after 2 month use and fine now.

GI doctor gave me Prilosec for stomach issues--afraid to take it

As you can see in my signature I went from 20mg and now I am at 13mg. The withdrawal symptoms have somewhat affected me and I have been struggling with bad indigestion (among many other withdrawal symptoms) after I have a meal.

I will feel SO full (even if I don't eat that much) and nauseas from it. My GI doctor took a full blood count and everything came back negative. I have to do a stool sample soon but since I work it has been hard and I cant always predict when I'll have a BM.

ANYway, he did give me the generic of Prilosec which I haven't taken yet. I am **very afraid** that it will cause even more stomach issues because of the side effects I read. WHY would a medication that is supposed to HELP your stomach have possible side effects of: fever;

cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat;

stomach pain, gas;

nausea, vomiting, mild diarrhea; or.

headache.

?!

That being said I have not taken it yet. Has anyone had experience with Prilosec and has it given you any of those unpleasant side effects? Please help.

Hmmm, I just googled your drug and it is a Proton Pump inhibitor used for the treatment of GERD, excess stomach acid and gastric ulcers.

http://www.drugs.com/prilosec.html

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proton-pump_inhibitor#Adverse_effects

Your symptoms don't sound like they're caused by excess acid. Or do you have heartburn or pain in the stomach?

I wouldn't take this medicine if you have any other option. On the long run Proton Pump Inhibitors can have bad effects like depleting nutrients, making you catch stomach bugs easier, giving you rebound stomach acidity because your body gets used to them.

Did you try ginger tea, tumeric or other herbal remedies? I would try those first. Doctors, as usual, just ignore all the side effects and want to throw pills at the problem.

Feb 2015 Took venlafaxine for 5 days only... experienced withdrawal that made me completely non-functional

Mar 2015 took under 1mg of Sertraline for 10 days in an attempt to combat Venlafaxine withdrawal. Got adverse reactions.

After stopping Sertraline, withdrawal got much worse. New, horrific symptoms.

June 2015 Still non-functional but slowly getting better. Still brain zaps, migraines, sweating, heart racing, depression, crying spells

September 2015: 24/7 brain zaps, twitches in the face, no concentration, bad memory, language skills deteriorating.

You might want to try ginger or turmeric instead. Or a probiotic.

PPI drugs deplete thiamine... which

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/health/fl-suzy-cohen-011815-20150108-column.html

Does the same apply to humans? While I think thiamine is useful to a person who drinks (even socially), the best way to repair damage is to stop drinking. It beats a banana bag, which often costs about $100 a pop.

It's not just alcohol. Other factors include drinking coffee, having an eating disorder and lap-band or other obesity surgery, smoking, and taking medications like antibiotics, acid blockers, theophylline, tamoxifen, antacids, hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) and digoxin.

To see if your medication depletes thiamine, refer to your copy of "Drug Muggers;" read Ch. 21.

Thiamine Helps Maintain Serotonin Levels
Thiamine is a B-vitamin (B1) that plays many important roles in the body. One of these is to help regulate serotonin levels in the brain. Indeed, thiamine deficiency may significantly impair serotonergic (serotonin-mediated) signaling processes. For example, animal studies suggest that replenishing thiamine in deficient animals reinstates normal serotonin function.

WARNING THIS WILL BE LONG
Had a car accident in 85
Codeine was the pain med when I was release from hosp continuous use till 89
