Anonc: Tapering off of 50mg Pristiq to 10 mg of Prozac

I was on 50mg of Pristiq for 1 year(tried the 100mg but it was too much for my body) and recently added 10mg of Prozac to my dose of 50mg of Pristiq for 7 days to now taking a daily dose of 10mg of Prozac. How long do i need to be on 10mg of prozac before i can get off of it? Do i take a half dose?? I have been on 10mg of prozac only for 3 days now and would love to get off of the antidepressants all together. Any suggestions for weaning off?

First of all I know nothing about Pristiq and equiavlent dosages to Prozac but I do know about Prozac, so I'm guessing you've switched to an equivalent dose? why have you switched, is it because Pristiq isn't available in liquid form for tapering? If that is the case I would stick with the regular every day dose of Prozac for a while to make sure you do feel really really stable and well and there are no withdrawals from the Pristiq. Then I would taper off the Prozac slowly using the liquid Prozac. I'm in the UK but I guess the dosages of Prozac are the same? i.e. 10mg Prozac tablet will = 2.5ml liquid Prozac. Use the 10% method for tapering: http://beyondmeds.com/2012/02/13/taper10percent/

There should be lots of info in this forum about tapering as well.

It is really important not to rush anything, take your time, don't rush into begining a Prozac taper, ensure the switch over has gone ok for several weeks, it can take a while for any withdrawals to become apparent. I'm tapering liquid Prozac myself.

Original drug was sertraline/Zoloft, switched to Prozac in 2007.
Tapering from 5mls liquid prozac since Feb 2008, got down to 0.85ml 23/09/2012, reinstated back to 1ml(4mg) 07/11/2012, didn't appear to work, upped to 1.05ml 17/11/2012, back down to 1ml 12/12/2012 didn't work, up to 1.30ml 16/3/2013 didn't work, bumped up to 2ml (8mg) 4/4/2013 didn't work, in July 2013 I reinstated Sertraline (Zoloft) 50mg, feeling better now.

A few months down the line I switched to 5ml liquid Prozac and tapered down to a compromise dose of 3ml liquid Prozac and have stayed there ever since, no withdrawals and no emotional blunting/loss of libido.

OK I just had a very quick look at the thread about Pristiq down below and see that switching to prozac is an option for coming off Pristiq!

This post was moved from Tapering to Introductions, because this is the initial, introductory post for anonc.

Psychotropic drug history: Pristiq 50 mg. (mid-September 2010 through February 2011), Remeron (mid-September 2010 through January 2011), Lexapro 10 mg. (mid-February 2011 through mid-December 2011), Lorazepam (Ativan) 1 mg. as needed mid-September 2010 through early March 2012

Before tapering any further, please stop for a few weeks and make sure your nervous system is stable, as Strawberry said. Pristiq is a very tricky drug from which to withdraw and three days is not enough time to know whether or not you'll be all right on Prozac 10 mg.

Did a doctor recommend this switch for you? I'm asking because I was switched from Pristiq 50 mg. to Lexapro 10 mg. with no problems, but it's my understanding that Lexapro is a much stronger drug than Prozac. That being the case, you may have already made a big decrease in the amount of antidepressant that you're taking.

Please take your time. For many people, getting off of antidepressants is a nightmare, particularly in those cases where the person went cold turkey or tapered off over a very short period of time. There are no prizes for getting off ADs the fastest, but you can do lots of damage that way.

Welcome, Anonc.

It sounds like you're doing pretty well with the switch to Prozac. You should give it some time, though, to make sure you're stable from dropping Pristiq. Since withdrawal symptoms sometimes take several weeks to appear, if I were you, I'd stay at the Prozac dose for at least a month.

What instructions did you get for this from your doctor?

Strawberry is right, Prozac liquid is best for going off Prozac when it's time to do that. You'll need a prescription for this. See http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/759-tips-for-tapering-off-prozac-fluoxetine/

For your information, also see Tips for tapering off Pristiq (desvenlafaxine) -- there is no good way to directly go off Pristiq.
