☼ Aberdeen's recovery from Effexor and now a Paxil taper

Hi Aberdeen! I have had several colds this autumn, and afterwards being so extremely tired. I guess it's the virus- and wd. I cant believe these tiny doses. They are still powerful. But anyway the symptoms from my drops dont last that long anymore. I can have a few days feeling very bad, but then back to "wd normal".

I hope your tiredness and anhedonia lift soon!

Current dose: 0! Free!  Quit June 2017.

2016: 0,98 to 0,22 mg; 2015: 2,35 to 1,01 mg; 2014: 4,9 to 2,5 mg; 2013: 9,1 to 5,1 mg; 2012: 15,7 to 9,7 mg; 2011: Started on 25 mg - then 50 mg- dropped to 25- to 12.5 mg - back to 25 mg - after 18.75 mg started tiny tapering to 16.6 mg

Started on 25 mg Zoloft in March 2011 due to stressrelated tinnitus that gave me panicattacks. Had a terrible reaction to Zoloft from start, but was told to "hold on". After four months I was stuck. Therefore the long taper. Crazy, I know... Super sensitive to drops and have dropped by 4-6 % from the previous dose.

Hey Aberdeen!

I didn't read the start of your journal when we were on PP, so it was very interesting to read the stuff that nz1 has put here. I did not realise just how horrendously bad you had been at the beginning (although I knew it was hard). It is wonderful to know just how much things have turned around for you (though I know there are still some bumps in the road). I hope your virus hangover finishes soon.

CT at 10mg. After 3 months RI at 5mg.

Taper at 10% per month down to 1mg. Taper the last milligram a little too quickly.

After ceasing meds, hit WD.

Currently 2 months 3 weeks drug free.

Hit protracted withdrawal 3.5 months after coming off Paxil (after 17 years use). I tried to reinstate just 0.5mg of Paxil but my body would no longer accept it. Tried a number of different drugs during a hospital spell. I eventually found one that eased my symptoms a bit. Currently, 10 months (15/05/16) off Paxil in the middle of a bad wave. I'm taking 150mg Clomipramine.

Well, low energy (can have more energetic days), not so easy engaged in things, slow thinking, sometimes feeling of exhaustion, buzzing in my head. But I can deal with it and have a quite good life.

What is wd normal to you?

I had the head cold thing too and it put me right back in a short wave. I did go away with the cold though. Nice to hear you had an ahedonia break, they sure are nice aren't they? I seem to be getting more and more! Cant wait to see you off of this junk. Good luck with the next drop.

Paxil start September 2003 due to Fluoroquinolone adverse reaction that I wish doc. knew what it was. 10mg. most of the time with a few short runs of 20mg. FAST tapered 3 times and finally hit poop out or a reaction to nsaid's in Nov.2013. Started a 10% taper Jan. 2014 and have been ok until Sept 14 and went through a short hell. Now plodding through and looking for the light with unrelenting insomnia and pain, fog, loss of interests....<p>12/20/14 - .8mg.

1/01/15 - .75 mg.

1/15/15 - .42 mg. better sleep now, hope it continues...

2/11-15 - .25 mg. doing really good!! 2 weeks feel 85% of old me!

3/17/15 .14 mg. Knee pain bad!

4/07/15 .05 mg. this is so small now that I am estimating and just licking it off palm small as a "."

4/13/15 NOTHING !!!! Took my last little micro dose on 4/12/15.

Amy my wd normal state is anhedonia , tendancy to over react to stress (with irritability or higher anxiety surges), ok or  sometimes blah mornings and difficulty sleeping past 6am,. A wave is when I have gasping jolty wake ups starting at 5am and feel panicky and gross until i get up, depression, despairing catastrophic thinking and obsessing about whatever it is that upsetting me, and sometimes brain fog and low energy. A window is when i feel a lift in the anhedonia, clear head, and none of the other symptoms and can sleep in later.

My drop to .7 seems uneventful I would have to say. Unless the recent surge in anxiety is from it, but it could be life events, that set me off. Either way im able to work fine and function and sleep ok.

Down to .6mg a few nights ago. Nothing noticeable so far.

Just dealing with the usual stuff..mainly anhedonia, horrible 2 week long PMS (irritability, spouse hate, house hate, brain fog). I have had a few days of a mild depression that swells and dissipates at certain times of the day, leaving me in that mindset that this is just me, its forever, not even wd...but its not soul wrenching anymore, and Im hoping for a break from that soon. I have had better mornings this week from the cortisol , though I never wake up peaceful and happy like I did many years ago.

I notice i have been losing weight like crazy, and this is great. I make an effort to eat a protein breakfast, and healthy most of the day...less sugar or refined foods, and lots of eggs, fruit, tuna and nuts and seeds. I have done this before...even more strictly to no avail. I have done weight watchers, atkins like diets, all of it on higher doses, and nothing significant would happen in the weight loss department. This time Im making next to no effort and it is coming off finally! I dont weigh myself because I hate getting caught up in the numbers of it all...and will start obsessing about each pound so i dont look. I dont give it much thougtht at all, and go by my clothes. i now have to get a new size, which is probably the best thing to have happened in a few years for me! I never had weight issues before meds, so hopefully this means my metabolism is finally balancing out. Just gotta stay strong for Christmas. Im finally wearing a coat I couldn't button up for over 5 years...and now when I close it, theres still room. :D

Congrats on the new drop! Also, yay for the weight loss! So funny how that happens. I too lost all my Paxil weight suddenly once I hit a certain dose and I remember how exciting it was. Hopefully, this is just the beginning of many more improvements to come. One step closer. :)

You describe the waves and windows very well, I recognize many of the symptoms. Especially depression, low energy, brain fog and catastrophic thinking. As well as clear head and good sleep during windows. I can even feel happines sometimes.

Wow, good bonus - the weight loss. I have seen a tiny loss too, but not that much. Earlier nothing could touch the weight. (around +10 kilos on zoloft)

Hey Skinny--LOL.  I'm so glad you're feeling better and things are starting to "shift".  I'm getting so tired of seeing the same three numbers on the scale every morning.  I'm hoping a dose related break through comes along soon, like you no diet changes seem to help.  Gee, .6mg it's just about decision time.

(((((((((((((((((((((((HUGS))))))))))))))))))

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks.  The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Final Dose 0.016mg.     Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017

lol..."decision time"

I know...and im not sure what to do, definately go to .5mg....and maybe skip to .3? or for good measure, just taper .1 down to .1mg...hard to know. Ive read about people having tough times at these doses but i often wonder if its just wd waves from the mess they started in. I suspect a lot of my troubles still are really from when I came off 262.5mg of effexor in 3 months(!)

I know how annoying it is to really try hard to lose weight and get nowhere.. i did a Candida cleanse back when i was on effexor..and thats pretty strict...and i did it for 6 weeks and lost 2 pounds, lol. My Dr was even baffled. I"m not eating whatever i want mind you...Im definatly eating less, and not much "bad food" but when i do have cake or ice cream at a birthday for instance,. the next day the cravings are back and i could easily fall back into it all...shortbread is a weak point for me and with Christmas coming...

Ladybug thanks for the vote of confidence, and Amy...you're doing great too. Im glad Im not the only one with these kinds of waves. I hate not knowing when Im genuinely freaking out about something, or if its "neuro emotion" and wd talking. Both feel equally valid and real in the moment. Its mind boggling.

Songbird, do they correspond with your drops or are they sporadic? And did you struggle with depression before (I know it was PPD you started meds for) I find that sporadic depression has been on and off for me through this whole process also, and yet before I had PPD I never had that. I felt things that i would now describe as depression in my life but it was always relevant to a troubling circumstance and resolved when the circumstances improved.

I think they mostly correspond with the drops.  I keep holding dose and eventually the depression lifts.  If not, I go to my Neurolink guy and after a session it lifts within a few days.  I think I did have mild depression on and off when I was young, but nothing that bad that I would have ever gone to a doctor for.  I used a lot of self-help books and stuff.  The w/d depression is not situational, it just seems to be a chemical state.  Life feels pointless and I feel weary of it, yet when it lifts I wonder how I could have felt that way.

I know exactly what you mean Songbird. These waves of depression for me feel chemical, not related to any change in events. When i had PPD the change in not working and having a new baby to care for, which is a big factor of course, it still felt unrelated to situations. Perhaps because it was hormone driven? Im sure thats what happens in wd too, because I'm sure hormones are disrupted like crazy in wd.

I guess this will be an update:

I had some bloodwork done this week and will see what it says, mainly because I still go through serious shedding phases with my hair. A friend of mine found out she was very deficient in B12 and iron and encouraged me to at least have things checked out which i have never really done in wd. They will check full thyroid panel, vit B, iron, glucose, cholesterol ect. fairly basic things. Im thinking it all will come back normal which is good, but not overly helpful, lol.

I am now at .5mg paxil. When i started this journey I was on 20mg in 2011, in a terrible place from crashing off Effexor and then trying Celexa and Cipralex in short periods of time. I was in turmoil beyond description. In fact, I can honestly say its beginning to fade from my memory, thank God. I didnt think something so traumatic could be forgotten, but maybe it can.

I feel  funny about this small dose... because back in the PP days I used to watch people below 1mg and htink, just drop the med already. Yet here I am lingering in this tiny dose range. I somehow hope its responsible for the low lying depression and DR phases I have, the anhedonia...or that the taper itself despite going no more than 10% per 5-6 weeks, is the culprit...because if not, than i worry its some chemical upset within me that will never right itself. I dont think its situational as things in my life are in a blanced place right now and no undo stressors are eating at me besides the typical. I know it all plays in together, but still...I guess what Im saying is, I need to believe that there is still room for MUCH improvement when Im off completely, by simple act of getting off the paxil (even if it is a micro dose) and no longer tapering and putting my brain through adjustments every few weeks (if in fact, it can even preceive these tiny changes). We shall see!

For the most part Im doing well, i hold two part time jobs, have two children and get them where they need to be and keep my house in better order than I was able several years back, have lost a lot of my paxil weight, socialize, get out, do things...and yet...I have no passion or zest. I go through the motions most of the time, with the occassional flicker...where the lights go on and think WOW, this is what Im missing?. I have phases of depression, phases of higher anxiety , and sometimes a few days of DR. My pms is through the roof. Mornings I wake up either in high anxiety states, or low level mild gloom, but not how I used to wake up, eager for the day with plans in place. I miss that. I miss my passion and motivation levels. I pray this is the year I see improvement there. I figure I will taper to .1mg and get off. Surely that is safe enough? I am tempted to skip from .5 to .3 to .1 and off. Not sure though. It s not like the steps in between will matter much timewise, Ive been tapering for 4+ years after all!

Onto a new year, lets hope this year sees improvements for us all! That is my hope and prayer.

The transformation from when we first meant to now is nothing short of amazing.  I can still recall the anguish in those first posts.  To watch your slow improvement over time has been an inspiration to me.

I know what you mean about wondering where to jump, the thoughts are crossing my mind daily.  It will come down to that same blind leap of faith we had to make when starting to taper.  At least this time we have some knowledge about how to handle what may be lurking there and the dogged determination to put up with it no matter how tiresome it is.  With any luck we will be pleasantly surprised and it will end up being a nonevent followed by steady improvement.

Funny about how the acute phase is fading into the darkness of the past.  I'm doing the same, I know it was really bad but the details are fading, which is a good thing I think.  It shows that we are moving on and leaving it all in the past where it belongs.  I think this is a key reason that people who have jumped off end up falling out of sight.  I hate losing my fellow travelers but in a way hope they never come back.

((((((((((((((((HUGS)))))))))))))))

I wonder too, as you know. When to jump.

I think the small doses are more active than we think. So try not to worry. It will change. Easy to say, I know.

I drop 0.02 mg and feel the difference. Mostly physical (heavy chest, brain fog etc) but also psychological. I just cant believe it! Crying, anxiety, mild depression... Ups and downs. But I also feel quite "normal" a lot. Not really super happy, but I can feel what happiness is like, sometimes.

I think this whole "project" of wd has had a kind of traumatic effect on me. You? I never thought I had to taper for this long... And I guess I wont feel totally relieved (relaxed) until this whole thing is over.

Hugs, Aberdeen!

It can't help but be traumatic.  We can't have gone through all of this and not be upset by a lot of things.  Working past all the stuff that has sprung up is all part of the healing process.  I know it has made me very leery of most people to the point of being pretty cynical.  There are a lot of facebook memes that I could quote, but you both have seen them already.  Needless to say we will come out of this a lot stronger then when we went in.

I do believe there is a lot of long-term remodelling that goes on, and some of this will take place for a while after getting to zero.  I also wonder what I'll be like eventually once I'm off - which me will I be?  The hypo-manic one who feels great or the depressed one who finds life a total drag?  Or somewhere in between...  Also I wonder will I be forever less resilient and more sensitive and more prone to anxiety and depression in the future, or will this also settle and rebuild back to normal over time.  I know what you mean about being tempted to skip - I would like to increase my drops from 0.1 to 0.15, but after trying it once and having bad depression I'm too scared to try it again.

Ive run out of Paxil and am tempted to stop. Im at .5mg...however...I think I will keep going to .1mg to be safe. This will for sure be last time I buy paxil, and my goal is to stop on my birthday, which will be June, and coincides with 4 more drops.

I tried to paint again yesterday and the intense tediousness of it was such an awful feeling that I left it feeling discouraged. When to push ourselves and when to back off and say maybe later. I never know. I'm so tired of this nonsense, enough already! On a good note I had restless legs last night which reminded me that this was once a constant symptom after 10pm, yet i havent had it at all in over 6 months. Morning anxiety was hideous yesterday and yet today was almost non existant, that too is encouraging as it usually lingers for days.

Strange but amazing experience last night...driving on a dark country road, moon was so pretty and the fields were covered in snow and i started thinking what a nice painting that would be in watercolour, and how one would do it...then I opened the window to get air and the cold air touched my face and felt so awesome that i opened the window more and got the full impact, I could smell the snowy cold air, feel it on my face, and for some reason it made me choke up and I had to pull over and cry...not in a "oh what a lovely evening how beautiful' way...but a visceral reaction...hard to explain. Ever banged your head or tailbone and you tear up and feel a gasp, and a pressure in your nose and a sob comes out but you arent really in much pain or even upset...like a reflex or a physical response you cant control....

I pulled my car over and just sat there sucking in huge amounts of the beautiful smell, winter smell...and remembered that winter does have a smell...and just cried, because I had forgotten...it was  a deep  sense of homecoming. It was surreal and it passed quickly. It was a childhood memory in real-time. Just amazing. I know it was a complete break in the anhedonia, a moment of normal sensory perception in all its fullness. It was brief but reminded me that I DO live in an altered state  and its NOT in my imagination, and that someday this will be the way i feel all the time again. It was wonderful!

Transitioned to all liquid for accuracy while tapering -- Horrible insomnia -- back to 25mg liquid and held until October 1, 2016

10/16 -- 11/18 tapered very slowly to 10.6mg.  No real improvement and never really stable so updosed to 12.5mg (1/2 a pill) for convenience and long hold.

After 8+ months of holding with no noticeable improvement decided to add .4ml of liquid Prozac (about 1.5mg) to see if that improves the situation

Supplements, Magnesium, D3, Omega 3, curcumin, Valerian, 81mg Aspirin, L-Theanine, Vit. C,

I think the only thing I miss about snow is that wonderful smell on a cold moonlit night.  I won't say how many years it's been, but I can still remember it.  I'm at work so I can't let out how happy I am for you Aberdeen.  Needless to say the box of tissues on my desk is getting a workout. I can't wait to see the painting, but I think I already have.

(((((((((((((((((HUGS)))))))))))))))

That sounds amazing!  I had a kind of similar experience a while back when I was driving home at night and suddenly all the colours of the lights looked incredible and I kind of cried at how beautiful all the colours were.  Sounds kind of silly now, but it felt amazing at the time.  The winter smell with snow sounds wonderful - where I live winter just smells damp, lol.
