Uneventful since my drop Feb 12th, this is a good sign. I dont think I feel my drops specifiaclly anymore. I just have my little waves, and slightly less anhedonic phases and irritable PMS stretches of two weeks. Same old stuff.

I had some odd nerve pains in random places for a few days but nothing bad, and not sure if it was even wd related, but I wouldnt doubt it. Still waiting on blood work to come back for hair loss. Its not falling out right now, but its done this for a few years now, stops for a few months, and then starts again. Amazingly i still have hair and no one would notice but i sure do. I will not be surpised to find out that all the bloodwork is normal. Seems to be the name of the game.

URGENT REQUEST Please consider submitting  for the petition on Prescribed Drug Dependence and Withdrawal currently awaiting its third consideration at the Scottish Parliament. You don't even have to be from Scotland. By clicking on the link below you can read some of the previous submissions but be warned many of them are quite harrowing.

Please tell them about your problems taking and withdrawing from antidepressants and/or benzos.

Send by email to petitions@parliament.scot and quote PE01651 in the subject heading. Keep to a maximum of 3 sides of A4 and you can't name for legal reasons any doctor you have consulted. Tell them if you wish to remain anonymous. We need the numbers to help convince the committee members we are not isolated cases. You have until mid February. Thank you

None of the published articles shed light on what ssri's ... actually do or what their hazards might be. Healy 2013.

This is so true, with anything you get on these drugs, dependance, tapering, withdrawal symptoms, side effects, just silent. And if there is something mentioned then their is a serious disconnect between what is said and reality!

Over two decades later, the number of antidepressant prescriptions a year is slightly more than the number of people in the Western world. Most (nine out of 10) prescriptions are for patients who faced difficulties on stopping, equating to about a tenth of the population. These patients are often advised to continue treatment because their difficulties indicate they need ongoing treatment, just as a person with diabetes needs insulin. Healy 2015

Ugh, been knocked down by a flu bug. This sort of fever virus always triggers wd symptoms, makes the anhedonia worse and brings depression on. Never used to have this issue prior to wd. I made the mistake of going online to look up anhedonia symptoms and of course ended up convinced I will never recover from it. There arent really any success stories out there, only others desperate to have answers too. So sad. I know im still tapering and cant judge yet...but I do. I judge myself "done" bc so many before me stopped at 1mg, or even less, .5mg and here I am at.4mg. So many wd symptoms are gone now, that the fact I still carry this one makes me afraid my dopamine "system" was thrown off by such high doses of Effexor and may never recover. I know this is the hopelessness of depression speaking, and being sick...but....UGH!!!!

Thanks CTmama....I know you're right...I guess I just worry sometimes because the anhedonia is so stubborn. It doesnt crack. Even my most severe wd symptoms all cracked eventually, the anxiety, despair, they all fizzled eventually so i do wonder why this one "can't".

How are you feeling?

It's the fever talking.  I had the flu a few years ago and it compounded my symptoms for several weeks, but then they cleared they raised the WDnormal level noticeably.  Hang tight the big jump is coming soon enough.

((((((((((((((((((((HUGS)))))))))))))))))))

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks.  The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Final Dose 0.016mg.     Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017

I agree with CTmama there is sooo much healing that happens once you are finally off, I don't think you should judge the future by where you are at now. And you DID have a crack in the anhedonia. Remember that lovely story about the wintry snow that brought tears to all our eyes? You were so present and experienced the joyous beauty of nature and life itself utterly and deeply in that one moment. Nothing anhedonic about that! I truly believe that that was just a taste of what's to come for you. You will get there. ((HUGS))

Pain is so much easier to ride out than head pressure, anxiety, stomach stuff etc. One thing I had noticed a while back I had an insomnia wave and for 2 weeks had very broken strange sleep but in EVER other way I felt great! I was sad to see that go, but really was exausted from broken sleep.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, it all passed. As i recovered form the flu and the after effects I seemed to bounce back just fine. I even seem ok in PMS...irritable and as usual, the emotional blunting, but otherwise back to what my "normal" is. Not depressed or overly anxious. And ladybug...yes, i forgot to address what you said but i did have a crack in the anhedonia back then...its hard to remember those moments, they are still so brief, and few, but when they happen its great...I get memories, feelings, and anticipation and peace...all in one amazing moment..sometimes a few hours. My brain can do it...but not sustain it yet.

Started on 25 mg Zoloft in March 2011 due to stressrelated tinnitus that gave me panicattacks. Had a terrible reaction to Zoloft from start, but was told to "hold on". After four months I was stuck. Therefore the long taper. Crazy, I know... Super sensitive to drops and have dropped by 4-6 % from the previous dose.

Hi Amy! I was planning to go to .1mg which would be about two more drops. Not sure. I might just give it up sooner, but now that Im here, its kind of scary. My current thinking is that if I play it super safe and go to .1mg, then if I have difficulties later on, I will be more confident that it at least has nothing to do with being careless with my taper, if that makes sense. Its a mind game Im playing, more than worrying about actual issues quitting i think, lol. I'm not sre. Or maybe just sheer stubborn-ness, bc i said I'd go to .1mg and now I want to stick to it. probably a little of both. How are you doing?

Oh, I envy you...two more drops! I know it's scary, I think so too. This has been a hobby for years!

But for sure you will be absolutely fine at 0.1 mg.

I am doing ok, impatient. Just want to be done now. But I still get physical symptoms and brain fog so I guess I have to carry on some more. It would be great though to stop this crap before summer. :-)

Therefore the long taper. Crazy, I know... Super sensitive to drops and have dropped by 4-6 % from the previous dose.

I am on 0.84 mg Zoloft. (It might be equal to 0.34 mg Paxil, but I dont know...The therapeutical dose of zoloft is 50 mg). It's tiny, weighs 2.6 mg. But still powerful as I feel the drops.

oh wow, yeah thats small. But if you feel the drops. that tells you something!  Maybe you really will be done by summer though! I dont feel my drops at all anymore. When i was dropping from higher doses, i would feel the drops around 3-5 days after. Then once I got below 5mg, I didnt feel them for about 9-12 days. Eventually not at all. Im not without symptoms, but they come and go on their own random schedule, they dont have a regular pattern anymore (besides PMS).

Thinking about all the healing still to come. Not withdrawal, but in general...healing from the experience. My life has changed so much. I think small, I live small, and I have learned how to be angry and helpless, and will have to somehow un-learn all of this again. When fear, loss, uncertainty, grief, anger, and all these negative things become your reality for a prolonged period of many years, it changes how you live and the lives of the ones around you. There is going to be some serious work to be done in the aftermath. I know it will be much easier to manage when the crucial parts of wd are over, when i can have more control of my own emotions again, when I'm not flooded with chemical anger, fear, doubt, paranoia, and whatever else my hijacked brain comes up with. For so long the focus has been just getting through one hour, one day, keeping my kids safe and fed and somewhat emotionally cared for as much as i could manage. But not living or tackling anything beyond these basics. When beyond the basics once again becomes possible...there will be so much to "fix". It will be much easier work compared to living with intense wd symptoms, I can sense that. My hope is to regain something of value from this battle when its over.

I think you're about to start the summer that you've been longing for, for the past several years.  Relearning how to live normally is going to be a challenge, I think a lot of it will be just relaxing, letting down our guard and enjoying things one minute/event at a time.  As with handling WD it will be a matter of letting it happen and not making it happen.

(((((((((((HUGS))))))))))))

I truly hope so Brass! I don't know for sure about this summer as I've come to the conclusion (perhaps incorrectly) that summer is simply too stressful for me what with the kids being home all day and making demands on my quiet, my privacy and my schedule, whereas during the school year, that is limited to mornings and evenings, leaving me with many afternoons to have quiet time...so I have learned to just expect that I will have more symptoms in the summer. Also, when it comes to the neighbourhood...winter is so cold here that everyone is indoors and its peaceful and quiet, summer everyone and their kids (and dogs!!) are loud, it frazzles me! I've come to love the calm of winter I have to say. But it comes every year so it'll be back soon enough!

i agree with the passive nature of healing. I think in time, things will hopefully fall back into place. Our strength will come back gradually as we merge into our new lives I imagine. In a lot of ways i wish I could move, to make the new start physical as well, but that isnt in our cards right now. But when it is, i will be happy for the change.

I am excited for you! I think once you are off you will start to see many more improvements, especially in the anhedonia department. You've been through so much but I truly believe the worst is behind you and things are only going to continue to get better. You're amazingly strong and if you've made it through this you know you can make it through anything. The knowledge of that is at least one small blessing from this awful experience, along with a newfound appreciation for the small things others take for granted. <3

My current thinking is that if I play it super safe and go to .1mg, then if I have difficulties later on, I will be more confident that it at least has nothing to do with being careless with my taper, if that makes sense.

Well....looks like I'm now on .1mg. This is the last dose for me.

But I can't let go yet. It's an illusion, but I feel that taking my dose every night is protecting me from "bad things". Not true, I know this, and I will let go when I'm ready.

I always believed I would "go back to who I was" when I was recovered...and while my recovery is still not complete, I know that going back isn't possible, but thats ok. By that I mean my brain will very likely return to "the way it was", before being altered by these medications, symptoms of wd will go away but my spirit and direction have been altered forever.

For 2011 and 2012  my life was a daily surreal nightmare. I lived with this unrelenting terror and disconnect that I to this day believe only a chemically disfigured brain can experience. It was not something I'd experienced before unlike anxiety or depression. I literally lived moment to moment most of those days. Before medication I had  experienced depression and anxiety during my time with PPD (which led me to meds). But during the initial phases of wd, I experienced a new level of primal, sickly terror where  I truly doubted my sanity.

For anyone who has ever felt that doubt (of your reality, brain and perception) and I mean really doubt it...and especially doubt your ability to ever return...that will change you forever because it opens you to a knowledge we never should have had access to. It was like a trip to hell and at times felt very spiritual (in a bad way). It took 2 years from my poop out crash for that specific thing to resolve, but it did, early in 2013. I may have had one more awful wave of it, and after that my waves included a more "normal" anxiety and of course the blend of DR and depression type stuff.

As a Christian, there were times my faith kept me alive.  Sometimes I was sure the intensity of the fear and negativity in my brain was doing permanent damage but it turns out it wasn't!

When I wasn't battling more intense symptoms I lived (and still do to a smaller degree) in a void where I felt grey and flat inside, no colour, no texture or taste...just a void, I missed my creative energy that filled my  days, I was unable to express or feel affection, read books, enjoy a movie (enjoy *period*), play, laugh, and all of my desire to create was gone, replaced with an anxious aversion in fact. Also intense anger/irritability.This was my baseline, in between waves.

Today I notice longer stretches where that grey flat place is improving, days where I anticipate positive experiences again, or "feel" music, or want to do something creative, motivation to get things accomplished. It's slowly coming back. I still have waves, but they are whispers of what they once were. I have cognitive issues where I cant find words, my thoughts are sluggish, but it passes. It's very livable. I'm forgetting how it once felt. Hard to believe but I am forgetting!!

I know nothing is going to change overnight when I jump off this tiny amount I'm still on, but it will be the end of an era and it's an era I'm happy to see go. I will still have a recovery period where I suppose anything can happen but at least I won't be contributing to it in any way chemically and for that Im so grateful!

These online support forums are a God send I think. We need validation and understanding. To talk to others who have been there is the most healing thing we can do for ourselves. So I'm grateful for that too.

I am so excited for you Aberdeen.  I've watched your story unfold practically from the beginning, and it's been amazing to see.  The changes from those lows, which were so painful to read about, to where you are now are hard to describe they are so huge.  Like you, I believe that we can't have gone through this and not be changes.  It is a spiritual growth that only those who have gone through it will have.  Lessons that can only be learned and not taught.  Our minds will protect us from remembering the details but the lessons will always be there.  I am reminded of Neil Armstrong after he returned from the first walk on the moon.  The experience changed him utterly, because it was an experience that could never be repeated by anyone ever and no one would every understand.  Each of our journeys can never be repeated by anyone else ever, that makes us unique.  It's a hard concept to wrap ones head around.

0.1mg wow, if you even breath you'll blow it off the paper.  When the time is right you'll know, then take a deep breath and jump.

Wow Aberdeen, that is so amazing!

I know what you mean about pure hell, even if I just felt it when starting the drug for two months. I thought I never could "return" either and I agree with you that that is a sensation that nobody would have to feel, ever.

I am so happy to see you reaching zero. You have been so patient. You will know when it's the right time for you to stop completely. Exciting!

And I truly believe all the colours will come back fully to your life. Maybe different, but more deepend.

Current dose: 0! Free!  Quit June 2017.

Aberdeen, congratulations on your success and will to get better and off this stuff forever!  I am new to this forum and looked up hair loss due to Effexor and your story popped up.  I realize it was long ago for you, but I'm curious how long you experienced shedding after switching from Effexor to something else?  I'm taking the generic Effexor called venlafaxine and extreme hair loss and want to taper but worried my hair issues will get worse.  I feel paralyzed. Thanks for any input or leads. Take care.

Started in 2002 to 2011 regular brand Effexor XR 75mg

June 2012 changed to Effexor XR 37.mg extended release

June 2013 was put on generic brand of Effexor called Venlafaxine caps 37.5mg extended release

2014 Westhroid, started taking 1GR twice a day in 2015

2015 Many Hormones, Progesterone sublingual 25mg twice a day, Cortisol sr 2.5mg once a day, DHEA sr 10mg once a day, Methly B sublingual twice a day, Bi-Est L1 sublingual 0.325mg 2 tabs in the morning and 1 in evening

Vitamins, Magnesium, Vitamin D-3, B-Complex, Iron, Pantothenic Acid, Iodine Complex, Selenium

2012-2013 Withdrawal issues major hair loss, brain fog/trouble concentrating, zapping, jittery, irritable, light headedness and abnormal visual sensations along with intense dreams at night.

Dec 7th, 2015  weaning venlafaxine, taking it every other day, trying to reach taking it every two days.  This was done by counting hours.  If I took my med at 7am then the nxt time I was due for meds, I'd pushed it out until 8am, 9am or 10am depending on my withdrawal issues, many of which are mentioned above. This continued until February 9th, 2016. I then jumped back to taking it every day. Complete misery. Jumping back on venlafaxine full time increased even more hair loss.

March 15, 2016 trying to save my hair, I thought dropping back to every other day would help. I've now weaned back to taking it every other day until present date. Unfortunately, I am still loosing my hair and experiencing the brain fog and forgetfulness and recently anxiousness.
