☼ Aberdeen's recovery from Effexor and now a Paxil taper

Thank you guys!!!

Athena I missed your post, sorry! yes I still use the scale. I crush my tablets between two spoons and weigh the powder. Its hard to be accurate sometimes at small doses but usually I can get it to level out.

Crossover...my hair is still bad! I had bloodwork done to test thyroid, b vitamins, iron, vit D ect and all was normal. It coul be hormonal, it could be withdrawal, or stress, but if it were a direct side effect of my meds I think it would have improved as my dose lowered and esp now that Im on such small amounts.

it has a pattern...falls out for a few months until its thin, then  it grows back for a few months, then falls out, then grows back, for a few years now.

Brass I like your analogy, it is something we have to just experience to learn about. And walking on the moon, yes, an experience really no one else has ever had. How surreal that would be!

Effexor 75mg to 262.5mg 2005-2010 for post partum depression

Tried Celexa,Cipralex, then Paxil to deal with wd(this switching made things worse and added akathesia)

Plugging along at whatever dose Im on. I was reminded that using the calibration weight will help so Ive tried that and am able to weigh out a dose that is about .25mg I have contemplated stopping here but think i will still attempt getting to as close to .1mg as possible. Scared to jump off because summer is a stressful busy noisy season for me..so Im unsure. Im amazed at how "protected" i feel with my little ritual of taking this tiny dose, surely it does nothing therapeutic and yet...here i am so afraid to let it go. It represents safety, warding off wd, the act of tapering slow feels productive. Once I no longer take these actions, my recovery will become more passive and out of my control, and loss of control is a scary idea.

I have noticed some significant improvements the last two months in the PMS department though...Instead of a solid two weeks of DR, irritability/anger, depression/anxiety ect...it seems to limit itself to the days around ovulation, the day just before period starts and then as its finishing, leaving many days during the two week PMS range where I feel ok!! That is new. I hope it continues.

One lingering wd symptom that so far has not budged is the inability to sleep in. I wake up at 6am and toss and turn until I get up around 7:30, and on wknds I try to stay in bed and am lucky to get another hour maybe of fitful sleep but gone are the days where i could sleep in until 10 or so. During that time my anxiety is all over the place, what iffing about every negative scenario. Some of them seem so stupid when the angst fades mid morning!!!  My list includes some good ones....kids get sick, hubby has a car accident, house burns down, job loss, Lymes disease, contaminated well water, bees in my attic, foundation falls apart on house, 2nd vehicle breaks down, jerks move in next door...on and on,lol. I am so sick of this. Its much less intense than it used to be, where I literally felt terrified sweaty and shakey, now its more of  a deep breath and "here we go again with this BS" feeling. Anhedonia is lighter most of the time, while I dont feel 100% motivation to the levels i knew before, I can feel myself more pulled towards tackling things, able to watch movies, read a little, minor simple creative projects that dont require a lot of prep work, housekeeping is kept up better...so that is also good! Slow but sure. I really dont have physical symptoms, occassinally lightheaded or sick feeling but its mild and I never know if that even wd or hormonal.

So thats sort of an update for now. Hopefully everyone else is doing ok, weathering the waves and enjoying the windows. Thats how this works.

Hey Aberdeen.

I think that the problem drug for you was Effexor and you managed to get through that. Your tapering of Paxil and mine were very different, in that I full on protracted withdrawal from about 1.2mg all the way to 0. I really do think you will be ok coming off, whenever you are ready. I also really do hope that will be the case.

Kind wishes

M

CT at 10mg. After 3 months RI at 5mg.

Taper at 10% per month down to 1mg. Taper the last milligram a little too quickly.

After ceasing meds, hit WD.

Currently 2 months 3 weeks drug free.

Hit protracted withdrawal 3.5 months after coming off Paxil (after 17 years use). I tried to reinstate just 0.5mg of Paxil but my body would no longer accept it. Tried a number of different drugs during a hospital spell. I eventually found one that eased my symptoms a bit. Currently, 10 months (15/05/16) off Paxil in the middle of a bad wave. I'm taking 150mg Clomipramine.

Thanks guys!

Still weighing out .004g to get an estimated dose of .25mg and then eyeballing half and taking it. Since May 16th. I have now spent a year getting below 1mg. I sure hope this has been reasonable. Its much lower than I ever thought I would go. I have been feeling awful lately though, anger, emotional outbursts, depressed. It started with PMS so there goes my two good months with little PMS,lol. THis time has been brutal. There are some big stressors going on as well and thats not helping. But then a small part of me wonders if dropping has caused this...technically it was a 50% drop but come on....at these dosages could that really even be a factor? At some point, no matter how small the dose...we have to face a 100% drop.

So who knows. I hope this lifts, but its hard to say because summer is the worst time of the year for me since wd. I want to wait until I feel better but on the other hand...I want this over with. Decisions decisions.

It will lift, Aberdeen. I think you answered yourself. You said you had big stressors going on, plus the 50 % drop. (At that low point it must be possible to do this kind of drop.) Just hang in there, it will pass. I hope you feel better soon.

aberdeen,

I read your post in Ladybug's intro about your daughter's sleep-onset insomnia and my heart went out to her -- such a young person to be struggling with this. I wonder if some of the techniques we discuss here might be helpful: guided meditations, yoga position (an L with legs vertical on wall, back on floor), blocking stimulating blue light in the evenings, maybe even self-massage with a foam roller. I've found it helpful to continue my morning light therapy sessions through the spring and summer to reinforce appropriate circadian rhythm.

Scallywag thanks you're so sweet to think of her! She just turned 10. I thought about teaching some of the visualization techniques. We used to do some and while they didnt put her to sleep she would get relaxed and close her eyes. She doesnt seem anxious, just sighing and flopping around and when I ask whats wrong she says "nothing, just cant fall asleep!" but she sure can sleep in the morning no issue!

Monica has had a similar situation since she was a kid.  Always a natural born night owl. Can't get to sleep before 3am and then sleeps till noon.  It's just her natural pattern.  Made for a lot of fun when we carpooled to work for a 7am start time.  Society  makes it hard, but fighting nature can be harder.

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks.  The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Final Dose 0.016mg.     Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017

Yes! Ever since I was a kid I just could not fall asleep at a normal time and always preferred to be up at night. I think they now call it Delayed Onset Sleep "Disorder." There really is a disorder for everything these days. But no, we're just night owls. :)

Well guys, I'm officially off Paxil! :)

I have no idea what to expect. I stopped on June 15th, so its been 2 weeks. Nothing new so far.  I'm nervous, and also happen to be in a bit of a wave at the moment which is not helping matters, however, I have finished my taper. I stuck with the 10% rule the whole way. I started taking Paxil in June 2011 as the third and final med that I had tried in an attempt to overcome a horrific crash and near CT from a high dose of Effexor earlier that same year. It didnt do much in terms of "cover" Effexor withdrawal so by October 2011 after 4 months of being on the 20mg I began the 10% taper. I dropped every 4-8 weeks, sometimes holding longer. When I got down to 1mg I had planned to stop but other peoples stories scared me and so i continued at 10%, which became really difficult near the last part, below .5mg At which point I dropped by .1mg to .2mg Once I reached that the only thing left i could do was estimate what .1mg would be and go with that for one more month. Honestly, I have no idea if this was sufficient enough to prevent a huge crash later this year. I wont know until enough time has passed and so i can only hope and believe that coping with the worst of Effexor poopout/wd in 2010-2012 will have taught me enough to endure whatever is in store for now also.

Every night at bedtime I feel I'm forgetting something, and it feels so wrong not to take it, as if I were still on a full tablet, lol. I wish i was more encouraged at this point but recently Ive heard so many horror stories from people who tapered slow that I can only hope I manage ok!

I will update regularily and keep on with you guys for a long time, you are all my support and some of you go back to my PP days, when things were even tougher and Im so grateful for this community!

Aberdeen-- Congratulations, I'm so excited for you.  Having been there from the beginning I know this journey has been no cake walk for you, but finally, free at last.  Even if there happen to be some hick ups in the future, they will be nothing compared to what you've been through all ready.  You couldn't call for a more well executed taper and it will pay off.  There are several of us right behind you so we can all face the new adventure together.

((((((((((((((((((((((((HUGS)))))))))))))))))))))

Tom

Thanks Tom!! Yes we've been at this for years together. I cant wait for you to finish too! Not long at all and yes its a comfort that there are a few of us going out there together. It hasnt been a smooth taper but I believe so much of that was from what occured before I ever started the Paxil taper. I was not able to replace a maxed out Effexor dosage with 20mg of Paxil so a lot of my issues were already in the mix (I say this bc there are people embarking a slow taper who will likely find it much easier than I did, so dont be discouraged by my story!) I feel so much better now than I did back then. You really do improve in time. I"m not going anywhere, just hanging around waiting for the rest of us and will stay in touch as this part of the journey starts!

Congratulations, Aberdeen!  You are only gonna get better from now on.  I think you deserve a sun!  :)

Paxil 20mg 1994-2005
Tried to quit twice, finally did it on my 3rd attempt in 2005.

I went from 20mg to zero in about four months, believing at the time that it was a reasonable taper.  It wasn't.  I suffered mostly emotional symptoms: frequent episodes of "anxious depression" lasting for about 17 months before it got noticeably better.

I"m so happy for you, Aberdeen!  I think you are the first person I am aware of since coming to SA a year ago who has completed the 10% taper, during that time.  My fingers are crossed for you that all the healing was done while you were tapering and that it will be smooth sailing here on out!  Woohoo!

SG

Started ADs back around 1995 after bad break-up, starting with Prozac.  Switched to Wellbutrin, and then to Effexor in 2002
Effexor XR 2002-2014 up to 225 mg at one point, down to 37.5 mg towards end but back up to 75 mg in 2014; now realize I had W/D as I dropped down, memory very poor about history.  Extreme emotions, poor concentration as I stepped back down, didn't connect the dots!
Summer 2014 reduced to 0 very quickly, was sick of anhedonia/sexual dysfunction due to meds, depression never controlled if not worse. Didn't recognize WD since symptoms built slowly (thought I had ADD! and menopausal on top of it), starting with severe sweats, very bad cog-fog and memory issues, culminating in weight loss, severe anxiety and depression, panic, severe apathy and insomnia by eight months off.  Saw p-doc who put me on Remeron, increased from 7.5 mg/day to 37.5 mg by May 22, 2015; still doing very badly though able to sleep.

June 1. 2015 Reinstated Effexor XR 37.5 mg, Remeron dropped to 30 mg PM. Immediate relief of symptoms, like nothing had ever happened!  Joined SA and began on advice of friend who recognized it was WD all along! Began tapering in July 2015.

Been tapering both meds ever since, focusing on one more than the other or doing no more than 5% of each per month.

12 mg Effexor and 5.8 mg Remeron (mirtazapine SolTabs to make a solution with OraPlus) as of 5/4/2017

Update 3/14/18: 2.9 mg Remeron and 6 mg Effexor; 6/10/18:  2.6 mg Remeron and 4.9 mg Effexor

Hi Lotus! How are you? Thanks for your wellwishes! It HAS been a long time.

Was just thinking as I tweaked my signature tonight to reflect my story better.....that its been about 6 years this month that it all started.  I had been dealing with exhaustion just before the "crash". I was falling asleep at the wheel of my car and sleeping through picking my kids up at school, I slept all through the days when I could, even at night but was still exhausted. I was scared I was seriously ill so I saw my Dr and he ordered tests for sleep apnea. The sleep study showed that I didnt have apnea but that I was not getting any REM sleep (at all!)  throughout the nightly sleep cycles. He told me it was the Effexor. Meanwhile the anhedonia and anxiety were beginning to creep up on me as well. The final blow was when I was unknowingly switched from one generic brand of Effexor to another, and a week later the house of cards crashed down (I now think this is more likely what caused my sudden reaction more so than just poop out). I updosed twice more after this (!!!), limped along for a few more months and by December had a complete breakdown and that was the start of the so called "taper" from Effexor (how I wish I'd gone back on my original generic brand and started a proper taper but hindsight....*sigh*). Despite the hell that was to follow, getting off the Effexor did resolve my sleep problems.

But back to the generic issue...my physician told me that there can be up to a 12% margin of freedom these generic manufacturers can have, meaning up to 12%of the pill can be whatever, fillers ect. So it probably was like making a huge cut in dose, or perhaps caused a kindling response because of new ingerdients..., who knows. After all of that when I wound up on Paxil, I would always check the manufacturer on the label. It changed once and I caught it. I demanded the old type and the pharmacist was fine with it and said a lot of people are sensitive to different generic brands. Something to think about.

One month free! I don't know if its liberating or discouraging to have to "re-set" my counter. I used to count the months and years from the point when I  came off Effexor because that is what started all of this. But because I was still on meds and involved in a taper I suppose I really had nothing to count. The true start point was when I got off everything I guess, and I feel a little bit like Im starting all over again. However, I never have had extended windows of true normality, its been almost steady anhedonia, and intermittent depression, DR and morning cortisol. A window for me, is less morning cortisol, no DR or depression and that comes maybe once a month or two and lasts a week or so, sometimes two or three. Its discouraging to think after 6 years I still feel this way however, maybe now I will begin to recover faster now because Im actually off.

Despite it all, I have not had any major setbacks this month, so for that im grateful!

Congratulations on finally being drug-free, Aberdeen!!  You've been through a lot, with a too fast taper off Effexor and going on many others before doing the final slow taper.  Do keep us posted!  It's nice to hear about people who made it through the slow-tapering process.

Thanks guys! Entering the pms part of my cycle now and feeling the moods change. Nothing too rough, just irritable and more blah. While this doesnt seem directly wd related, im sure these meds and the wd process havent helped the hormones any. Hoping my cycle fluctuations become less dramatic as I heal. Most nights when bedtime comes I still feel something is missing when I dont have to reach for the scale and weigh out a dose!

Effexor 75mg to 262.5mg 2005-2010 for post partum depression

Started having poop out mid 2010, also switched generic brands, then crashed in Dec 2010 (anxiety/ "terror", intense DR, anhedonia, suicidal ideation, chills, insomnia, horrible intrusive thoughts, disorientation, ect)
Rapid "tapered" from 262.5mg Effexor in 3 months

Tried Celexa,Cipralex, then Paxil to deal with wd(this switching made things worse and added akathesia)

Found online support and started tapering Paxil 7 months after quitting Effexor (at this point was having small windows).

Paxil taper: dropped 10% every 4-8 weeks

Year 1 October 2011 to Nov 2012 20mg to 10mg

Year 2 March 2013 to Feb 2014 10mg to 4mg

Year 3 April 2014 to May 2015 4mg to 1.1mg

Hi Aberdeen,

I've read your story and it is great to see how far you have come.

Wishing you the best as you continue to heal.

Medicine History

June 2011 I was put on 10 mg Olanzapine. I stayed on that for 7 months then went down to 5 mg for 3 months and then went down to 2.5mg and slowly went down to less than .3 every few days. I have tried to come off 4 times, each time getting down to less than .3 before having to go back on at 5mg or 2.5mg. I would cut by 50% each taper. From Jan 2015 to June 2015 I reduced from about 5mg to .3 mg. This last time I went on 2.5 mg last June 2015 until July 2, 2016. July 3, 2016 I went down to 1.25mg - withdrawal hit. Up dosed to liquid 2 mg July 23, 2016.

Medicine Current

2 mg Olanzapine as of July 23, 2016

Supplements

Omega 3 1000mg, Vitamin E 400 UI, Vitamin C 1000 mg Time Released, 200 mg Magnesium Bisglycinate, Multi Probiotic, .25 mg melatonin for 3-5 days as needed

Still plugging along. Caught up in a state of in between a lot. Not a window, and not a bad wave. I miss "myself" though. Its not quite DR or just anhedonia (maybe its the effect of the combo) but I know that when I get these glimmers of familiarity, of fullness within myself, its like all the aspects of me come together, memories, emotions, excitement, joy, in the simplest of things. Then the glimmer is gone and its back to this dry flat moment to moment existance. Its not at all hell anymore, the anxiety and depression are only there in little waves now but theres "something else" that just isnt right. I suppose its apathy. Its been going on since 2010 so it would be easy to start forgetting how I once was, but I CAN remember, and when I have these flickers its a total a-ha moment, a burst of life and coming-home feeling. And they are so brief its discouraging. Sometimes im afraid its the result of a fried nervous system, a lingering damage, I wonder why my brain cant sustain that state of connection for longer than a few hours or so.

But on the positive side I find my stress tolerance slowly improving. I can tackle things and accomplish more as the months pass. I had far less depression and anxiety this summer than last. There is a gradual healing from my original reaction and I suppose I need to be patient and expect to heal more from the tapering as well.
