a friend of mine who was on Zoloft for years, decided to gradually decrease her zoloft over time. She did not have WD and she did it over about a year or so. She noticed that she was losing weight. She lost 53 pounds and is totally off zoloft and doing well. She said it really fell off once she was off of it. The cravings diminished and she has the willpower to not engage in eating junk. I am a sugar addict. Before I took ssri's I was a nice weight. I did not really have weight issues on Pamelor. When I switched to Paxil it started. Then there was Lexapro (another weight gainer). Now Celexa. I had alot more will power before ssri's. I always had cravings, but it was manageable. I am older, and I take HRT. But I really believe ssri's keep the weight on. My daughter friend got of lexapro and dropped 30 pounds. She is on Cymbalta now and gained the weight back. This is the real reason I want to get off ssri's. Hugs

I have lost 55 pounds since stopping Effexor in Oct. of 2011. It was "lost" with no effort on my part. I binged like crazy on Effexor and just don't now. I have urges but have the ability to refrain from bingeing. I don't know what makes one binge on ads. I thought they were supposed to minimize that urge. One thing I noticed though is now that I don't binge, my feelings are stronger and I feel uncomfortable feelings that the bingeing covered up. The ads covered up unpleasant feelings too. Being off ads is still better than being numbed out.

Thanks Fefe...

AD's are weight gainers for sure. Like you I had cravings my whole life, but they are not manageable while on ssri's. Tricyclics did not cause cravings.

It is interesting that you lost that weight and didn't have to run yourself into the ground to try and get it off.

Paxil shuts down the fat burning enzyme Leptin and afterafter getting off of it, the enzyme awakens from a deep sleep and begins doing it's job again.

The mental/emotional part of this really bothers me alot. I struggle with it every day.

I am physically busy most of the time. I should look like a stick

I definitely lost weight about 40-50 lbs in the first 9 months. I was at a pretty good weight for a while but then started with GI problems and lost additional weight. Weight gain is very common on both of the meds I was taking then -- an AD and an atypical antipsychotic. I definitely felt unhappy about my weight problem at the time so I know how terrible that feels. I felt a lot better about myself when I returned to a more porportionate weight. Of course, at the time, I experienced substantial misery through the withdrawal process. If I could today have the 2009 weight with the 2012 knowledge, I'd happily take back the weight to know how better to deal with my situation and avoid the worst horrors. Good luck, Nikki! I am pulling for you in 2013! EDIT: My leptin was tested as part of a biotoxin diagnostic panel a couple mos ago and it came back almost unmeasurable, so very low. Not implying causation. I don't understand the result.

"Well my ship's been split to splinters and it's sinking fast
I'm drowning in the poison, got no future, got no past
But my heart is not weary, it's light and it's free
I've got nothing but affection for all those who sailed with me.

Everybody's moving, if they ain't already there
Everybody's got to move somewhere
Stick with me baby, stick with me anyhow
Things should start to get interesting right about now."

I haven't really lost much weight, but I'd say I'm definitely not as bothered by my weight as I was. My BMI is 29, which as it turns out is just one point above average for my age. And it turns out statistically that people with BMI over 28 actually live longer than people with lower BMI, up to a point (at severe obesity the lifespan gets shorter again). Plus, being postmenopausal, carrying more weight gives me better estrogen status (after menopause the type of estrogen in the body is estrone, which is produced in fat cells, not the ovaries)--and also reduces my risk of osteoporosis, which both of my parents have. So that's another piece of the puzzle, if you find you're fretting a lot about your weight. It turns out that carrying a bit more weight, especially for postmenopausal women, is not necessarily a bad thing. And if it's society's dictates that are driving you nuts (about attractiveness)--well, I struggle with those every day, since my age alone has put me into the "not worth anything" category, as a woman in our society. So screw 'em, I say. I love myself, my body's doing GREAT given all the crap it's been through, and I'm not going to get that external "attractiveness" validation from American culture and media regardless. (I watch a lot of BBC instead.)

Started on Prozac and Xanax in 1992 for PTSD after an assault. One drug led to more, the usual story. Got sicker and sicker, but believed I needed the drugs for my "underlying disease" as I was told. Long and tragic story...lost everything. Life savings, home, physical and mental health, relationships, friendships, ability to work, everything.

Now tapering, ironically (but not surprisingly) healthier and more functional than I ever was during the years on the "meds," even with withdrawal (usually fairly mild at this slow pace).

Started multidrug taper in Feb 2010.  Doing a very slow microtaper, down to low doses now and feeling SO much better, getting my old personality and my brain back! Able to work full time, have a full social life, and cope with stress better than ever. Not perfect, but much better. After 23 lost years. Big Pharma has a lot to answer for. And "medicine for profit" is just not a great idea.

Feb 15 2010:  300 mg Neurontin  200 Lamictal   10 Celexa      0.65 Xanax   and 5 mg Ambien

Feb 14 2011:   86 mg Neurontin   144 Lamictal,    5.5 Celexa   0.42 Xanax      1.9 mg Valium

Feb 16 2012:   10 mg Neurontin   115 Lamictal     3.7 Celexa   0.285 Xanax     2.0 Valium

Feb 22 2013:   86 Lamictal    2.05 Celexa       0.23 Xanax      1.8 Valium

Feb 10 2014:   62 Lamictal    1.1 Celexa         0.135 Xanax    1.8 Valium

Feb 10 2015:   50 Lamictal      0.875 Celexa    0.11 Xanax      1.5 Valium

Feb 15 2016:   47.5 Lamictal   0.75 Celexa      0.0875 Xanax    1.42 Valium

Now:                43                    0.625                 0.0775            1.3

Interesting info on leptin. Any knowledge of a connection to sleep or ghrelin? I've had the opposite problem of weight loss after about 8 years on various SS/NRIs. At first, i appreciated it because i always tended to be a bit heavy. I haven't noticed a change since withdrawing from Pristiq. Thanks everyone.
Pristiq tapered over 8 months ending Spring 2011 after 18 years of polydrugging that began w/Zoloft for fatigue/general malaise (not mood). CURRENT: 1mg Klonopin qhs (SSRI bruxism), 75mg trazodone qhs, various hormonesLitigation for 11 years for Work-related injury, settled 2004. Involuntary medical retirement in 2001 (age 39). 2012 - brain MRI showing diffuse, chronic cerebrovascular damage/demyelination possibly vasculitis/cerebritis. Dx w/autoimmune polyendocrine failure.<p>2013 - Dx w/CNS Sjogren's Lupus (FANA antibodies first appeared in 1997 but missed by doc).

My reasoning for trying to wean off AD's is because of weight.  The reality is that I gained 50 pounds from the day I put Paxil in my system.

From Paxil to Lexapro same weight.

On imipramine I was able to lose some weight.

Added Celexa same 50 pounds.

Been like this for 13 years and it sux.  Carrying around this weight has affected many areas of my life from and internal view.

Affected self esteem.  Don't look in mirrors. Shame, to mention a few.

I have always had sugar cravings, they sky-rocketed from AD's.  It has become worse over time.  I begin a diet and then the cravings come on.

The reality check came for me this week when I stepped on the scale at the doctor's office and I let the nurse tell me what I weigh.

Do I want to blame the drugs.  Yes,  Do I need to take responsibility - yes.

How?

I wish I knew! But I have been reading the posts from The Institute for the Psychology of Eating and find them quite interesting. I'm not sure anything will work with soaring cortisol levels...I have to go back to the source of that. Some people find the GAPS diet helpful...it especially looks at healing the gut. But I am sure that restrictive dieting rarely works. Like depression, weight gain is usually just a warning light that something somewhere is amiss. You can remove the light bulb, but that doesn't solve anything.
1st round Prozac 1989/90, clear depression symptoms. 2nd round Prozac started 1999 when admitted to dr. I was tired. Prozac pooped out, switch to Cymbalta 3/2006. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder due to mania 6/2006--then I was taken abruptly off Cymbalta and didn't know I had SSRI withdrawal. Lots of meds for my intractable "bipolar" symptoms.
Zyprexa started about 9/06, mostly 5mg. Tapered 4/12 through12/29/12
Wellbutrin. XL 300 mg started 1/07, tapered 1/18/13 through 7/8/13
Oxazepam mostly continuously since 6/06, 30mg since 12/12, tapered 1.17.14 through 8.26.15
11/06 Lithium 600mg twice daily, 2.2.14 400mg TID DIY liquid, 2.12.14 1150mg, 3.2.14 1100mg, 3.18.14 1075mg, 4/14 updose to 1100mg, 6.1.14 900 mg capsules 7.8.14 810mg, 8.17.14 725mg, 8.24.24 700mg...10.22.14 487.5mg, 3.9.15 475mg, 4.1.15 462.5mg 4.21.15 450mg 8.11.15 375mg, 11.28.15 362.5mg, back to 375mg four days later, 3.4.16 updose to 475 (too much going on to risk trouble)
9/4/13 Toprol-XL 25mg daily for sudden hypertension, tapered 11.12.13 through 5.3.14, last 10 days or so switched to atenolol
7.4.14 Started Walsh Protocol
56 years old

Hi MQ

I have read that soaring cortisol leaves weight gain around the midsection.  Is this what you mean?

It is nice to hear from you.....how are you doing?

Was off site for a period of time as I was tapering, doing well and wanted to take a break from the sadness that exists from anyone trying to get off of these drugs.

I was cold turkeyed off of hormones by a Jack-ass doctor and it triggered WD.....so here I am again :o

Want to be normal and thin :) Is that too much to ask  :P

I definitely gained weight from the meds.  When I switched from Prozac to Zoloft and I gained 15 lbs in 4 months.  Sadly, the weight did not melt away when I switched back to the Prozac.

Now, as I'm trying to get off of all of the psych meds, I'm also looking at the gut which I didn't have a year ago and wanting to rid of it, too. I know that I should focus on my taper, but I'm impatient with those extra pounds.  There are some awesome clothes in my closet that I can't fit into!!

Every week I weigh in, and I formulate a new "plan" for getting rid of the weight - a change in my diet or in my exercise routine.  But, I can't tolerate hunger when I'm feeling like cr*p from WD. And exercise is inconsistent, too.  When I'm well enough to get out, hiking and mountain biking help clear my head and WD symptoms (it's amazing that I can ride a bike when I'm too dizzy to drive a car!!). And I'm very grateful that I'm able to do these things.  But I've tried going to my exercise classes at the gym, and I can't bear the noise or the stimulation. Those will clearly have to wait for another day.

I have been off Celexa for awhile (not sure) maybe a month????

I have actually started to lose some weight.  For years I had heard on support websites that the weight does not come off until off the drug.

This is good but the price to pay is intense.

Next is the imipramine and getting off of that.  Does this insanity ever end

Very exciting re the weight loss, Nikki!!

I made an earnest attempt in Sept-Oct, but didn't see any change on the scale.  I weighed in on Sunday morning, though, and it looks like I held steady through the first part of the holidays.  Yay! It would be nice to get down to my pre-Zoloft weight, but my priority for now is to get strong and healthy.

Smiles,

mtnbkr I tell people that weighing in is against my religion :D

My pants are loose rather than turning me blue in the face as I attempt to zipper them up.  This is a good thing.

I sometimes feel that I look like SpongeBob Square Pants.  LOL

Serzone is not a weight gainer which is why I opted to use it.  My mother did not gain weight on it (been on it for years) and she did not gain weight from Zoloft but she gained weight from Elavil.....

Mtnbkr, I am curious how you are doing with your taper? From your signature you dropped your Wellbutrin pretty fast and now your Prozac.  For most people this would be pretty fast and give them worse WD.  Have you been having any intense WD sypmtoms like bad anxiety or insomnia?  I just find it interesting how we all share so much the same and also so much can be different for each of us!  Thanks for any info. you care to share with me.

Sept-1990 started my first AD Zoloft never got higher dose than 50mg
Dec-1990 Quit Zoloft  =Nov-1995 Back on Zoloft for Post-partum depression/anxiety

2 reminders/suggestions -

People will have physical cravings, especially for salty food, when they have not had enough water. Next big craving try drinking a glass of water and waiting 15 minutes.

Also, muscle weighs more than fat so as our bodies start to change and become healthier a scale may not offer an accurate read. They do make some that will do weight,% of water, % fat etc. They are pricey but effective and mostly accurate.

I've been all over the place on the weight spectrum. I'm at the can't keep it on side. Much of mine is muscle loss which is a bit scary. Sometimes it sucks to be here too. "You're too skinny. You need a burger. You call that a meal? etc."

Oh to find that middle ground of healthy body AND healthy self-esteem. We will get there!

I was hoping that coming off the Lexapro last fall would also help me shed the 40 lbs I have gained since I began taking it 6 years ago.  I never had a weight problem at all until I started the Lexapro, but it was the first drug to ease my depression, so I decided it was worth it.  My doc had me taper off last fall because he was afraid it would peter out on me and I might need it again in the future.  Now I'm stuck with withdrawal syndrome and STILL can not shed ANY of the weight.  Even dieting isn't working.  It's like my body is stuck in whatever mode the Lexapro put it in. :/

Been on many and various AD's since 92. Began Lexapro, a life saver, in 08. Began taper Aug 13 - Oct 13. Terrible time with the withdrawal.

I am wondering if the cortisol problems associated with withdrawal keep some people from losing weight in the short run.

I used to be on 200mg zoloft, currently on 25mg. Going to stop taking them in a week. I am also on 30mg Tolvon, which i am also going to ask my doctor if i can stop taking them as well. The thing is that i gained a lot of weight sinse i started on these meds, which is the worst thing that could have happened in my opinion. I am getting so depressed because of this weight gain. I have cravings, but i NEVER give in to them, in fact i don't eat anything but maybe some fruit a day because if i eat anymore than that i will gain. I excersise for about an hour a day, but after months of excersise and not eating much, i still don't lose any weight what so ever. I can't explain how depressing and horrifying this is for me, the most important thing for me is to not get fat (i know how stupid this sounds, but it is how it is). Will my weight start dropping after i quit on these meds? Why do i still not lose weight even if i excersise and eat basically nothing, is it because of the meds? Does anyone know anything about this? If you do, then please help me.
Love from me <3

Glad I found this thread!! I put on 40 lbs with Zoloft pretty quickly - like others said, it's like it makes it impossible to control cravings. My sugar intake was way too high. Going off Zoloft didn't make the weight go away, but made it so I could curb cravings (major sugar detoxes) and focus on clean eating and exercise. I mean, on Zoloft I couldn't even get myself off the floor, so I couldn't exactly control what I ate or how I exercised. I'm now down 25 lbs in 5 months of clean eating and exercise. 9 months off drugs. Hugs to all who've been damaged by these drugs. xxoo

I took Zoloft at 50mg/day, then 100mg/day, for 18 months for Postpartum Depression. My dr wanted to increase to 150mg, at which point I decided I needed to get off (at about 1 year). I had many debilitating symptoms but it took me a while to recognize that it was the drug causing the problems. I tapered off over 6 months, and had lots of horrible discontinuation symptoms. I went from 100 to 50 by alternating doses (doctor's plan), for probably 2-3 weeks, then to 50, and stayed there for several months. Then down to 25mg/day alternated with 50 mg/day for a couple of weeks, then straight 25, then every other day 25, for like 2 weeks each time, down to one dose of 25 every few days, then off completely. I'm now 3-4 months drug-free but still experiencing severe mood fluctuations and some depression and self-harm. Just wondering when it's all going to end and when I'll be back to my old self. As long as the answer isn't "never" I just want to hear other stories. xo

Thats awesome! I gained about 40 lbs on Prozac and I cannot for the life of me lose weight. I did not plan to get off the Prozac until i was eating clean and exercising for 5 months with no progress. I didnt lose a thing!!!! it was so frustrating. So i did some research and went to my dr and told her i was done. I have never had this much trouble losing weight. I am hoping it doesnt take me years to get this weight off. I havent stopped working out and eating right so im hoping. I started to taper off the meds about 6 weeks ago. I am not off of the prozac completely. Its been about a week and so far im doing ok. I dont feel the cravings for sugar as much and im not eating constanly. I seriously was like a bottomless pit and i ate alot at once. I constantly craved sweets. Im also not as tired. I was able to sleep all day long on prozac. I want to know about anyones recent weight loss after stopping their meds!!

I just started my 11th month. I've lost about 15-20 pounds when i weighed in a couple of months ago. But since then i went down another pant waist size.

I get the occasional need for munching to the point of being ravenous. But for the most part the brown bag lunch I pack is seldom finished when I go home from work.  I also try to do some exercise every day, sometimes my fatigue is just too overwhelming and I don't.

On the crap- I remember a few times eating so much that i vomit up stuff i'd eaten, yet I couldn't get satiation.  And going a couple of  hours between meals I'd feel like I was starving myself to death (I do know what that is like- I'd dieted down a hundred pounds a long time ago before I went onto SSRI's.)  But nowadays- for the most part mild hunger doesn't hit me too hard or too often.

1)Zoloft- 6/99 to 8/04 2)Escitalopram- 8/04 to 8/10 3)Citalopram 8/10 to 4/14 (C/T), 4)Paxil a week or so, 5)Wellbutrin a week or so, 6)Reinstated Citalopram- 9/14 to 7/15

Before Taper- Celexa/20 mg....Taper Start- 04/21/15- 15mg....05/26/15- 10 mg...06/22/15- 5 mg...07/18/15- 0mg. http://tinyurl.com/qjfoqe9 Ativan/Lorazepam use/taper 10/14 to 2/15- http://tinyurl.com/ljebp84

Baclofen- Intermittent use of from 2008 till 2014. Some use of Promethazine. Some use of Zofran. Clobetasol Propionate- for Lichen Planus. Some Flexeril use.

Ativan- GABA,A receptor Agonist., Baclofen- GABA,B receptor Agonist., Celexa/Lexapro- Serotonin 5-HT1A Receptor Agonist., Zofran- Serotonin 5-HT3 Receptor Agonist..Promethazine- Histamine H1-Receptor Antagonist. Flexeril- Serotonin 5HT2a Antagonist.

My self imposed Amino Acid Therapy: Tyrosine 500mg 1xday, Theanine 200 mg 1xday, & Taurine 500 mg 2x day. (All neurotransitter pre-cursors)- seems to have helped me immensely. And of course- eating healthy, including Black Beans for the oligosaccharides for gut health.

I dont think I overate,   but gosh, I was always a 52kg lady, 5 foot 3 tall.              Never got any heavier, until these HORRIBLE pills.  My sister thought it was great I finally put on some weight, but it didnt stop.   I never weighed my self, not my thing, but going from a size 8 to size 14?    Off most of the crap for 18 months now,  I hardly eat, not much appetite, but I refuse to feel stressed about it.    I am now down to a size 10 already, in 18 months.   Nice not to have my legs rubbing together.   Nice to have a chin back, and nice to fell ME again.   I have always been thin,  that is ME>     LAST NIGHT!!!!  Like wow, I can again sleep the way I used to before SSRI FAT.    My forearm now again fits in the dip, where I once had a waist   ie I HAVE A WAISTLINE AGAIN   :)                            For me, the reason I gave up the pills was that they were killing me,  high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stuffed liver, stuffed kidneys,  they all fixed themselves now.   When I started OFF the pills, I had no idea how mentally unwell they had made me.  I always blamed something else for the stress, depression, overspending, drinking too much, all of that.       It was the damn pills, if only I could go back, and regain what those pills have stolen from me?

Worse thing, everyone said ah weight gain is just middle age,    so I chucked all my nice clothes, damn they would fit me again now!

I was on mirtazapine for about 15 years and my withdrawal torments are documented in my signature and intro (link in signature). Off mirt since March 2015. Recently I've realized that I gained about 25 pounds during the time on AD's and in the two years since my mirt taper got below 15 mg/day I've lost those 25 pounds, quite effortlessly. (I also quit drinking 2 years ago and had tended to attribute the weight loss to that. Who knows? [I was not a real problem drinker but liked my cocktail and a glass or two of wine every night.]) Like Ang, my blood pressure had gone up (about 140/80) and medication was being discussed. Since neither mirt nor alcohol are part of my life, BP has been about 122/70 and cardiologist is applauding. Of course he thinks it's the booze, not the mirt. The why doesn't much matter to me. At age 71 there are plenty of other issues to fret about. Like, you know, whether to friend Babs on Facebook.

Diagnosed w/ ADD and minor depression in 1990. Fluoxetine 20 mg/day. Also methylphenidate, but hated it and quit after about a week. Quit fluoxetine cold turkey (ignorance) 18 January 2013. Experienced brain zaps, flu symptoms, heart palpitations. Nothing after August 2013. Mirtazapine 15 mg/day for sleep beginning around 1999. Began tapering August 2013.  As of March 2015 I'm off mirtazapine and antidepressant free. Don't sleep well after sunrise, feel anxious and sad some of the time, still have tinnitus. Still occasionally take lorazepam for anxiety but never more than 1 mg.  Prescribed metoprolol (beta blocker) for atrial fibrillation diagnosed June 2013. Medical  opinion (two cardiologists) is that it's not caused by fluoxetine w/drawal and is a dangerous, chronic condition requiring lifelong medication. As of Aug 2013 heart palpitations for the most part ceased. Tapered beta blocker and am off of it as of Jan 2015. No wd symptoms or recurring afib at all so far. Maybe it was wd after all, but doctors don't think so, surprise surprise. However, a small victory: the last doctor I related this to shrugged her shoulders. Getting lots of exercise, which has me physically pretty robust at age 71 in spite of persistence of mirt wd symptoms, mainly insomnia and anxiety, but also jaw-clenching annoyance at noises of a certain pitch and timbre. Incessant media fixation on the presidential campaign has ruined my disposition and my faith in the future. My Introduction.

I'm slowly coming off of sertroline (zoloft). My weight gain is awful since starting and I've been a sugar and fatty food addict since starting. I discovered a free hypnotherapy app GH Ultimate Weight Loss. I listen to it at bedtime and it's stopped my sugar cravings. It's freaked me out a bit how it's working so well. I am hoping at last that a combination of coming off of ssri and curbing sugar cravings the huge spare tyre I've gained will at last reduce. I'm worried that my anxiety issues will rear their ugly head once I'm off zoloft. I hoping more energy gain from Wright loss will help with this.
