Hi no im not any better my sleep is the same cant sleep with out any meds. I go to bed each night and try but after hrs of jumping as I start to sleep I brake down and take something. Could you maybe explain what would happen to me if I didn't sleep for a while would I eventually sleep ? Even though my body thinks sleep is a bad thing and triggers the flight or fight response. When I first had this problem I did the wrong thing and started researching and scared my self thought for a while I had fatal insomnia lol. Im sory I just dont know what would happen and was taught to ask questions when you dont understand. Thank you :-)
Lexapro 1 1/8 mg and 10 mg Propranolol. I jumped down to 2.5 mg lexapro from 5 mg on oct 2 where I had been for 7 months and went from 2.5 mg to 1 1/8 mg not sure when maybe around nov 2 went back up to 2.5 mg December 30 . May 13 small cut lexapro 2.5 mg down to 2.4 mg 9/4/14 dropped 8.33% to 2.2 mg 10/13/14 dropped to 2mg lexapro. Back up to 2.2 mg 10/15/14. Dropped to 2 mg lexapro 11/26/14. Dropped 10% to 1.8 mg lexapro 1/11/15. 2/23/15 . Cut of 5%.
3/11/15 cut of 5% 5/3/15 cut of 5% 6/3/15 cut of 5% 7/19/15 cut of 5%. Continued small cuts of 5% every six weeks or so untill October 8th 2016 ,last dose . Last dose was 0.8mg. Currently taking 10 mg propranolol in the afternoon. 1400mg fish oil. 250 mg magnesium, 250 mg L-Taurine, 500 mg Tumeric. 40 mg Zocore simvistatin.

It may take a while for the updose to 2.5mg to have an effect.

Hi lobster, The waking directly when falling asleep is awful. Had much of that a while back. My 2 cents on this. Im thinking the brain/stress system like bucket that empties rather slowly. When i went through my days with the bucket almost overflowing I had that problem. The bucket was full in the evening spilling over at sleep onset. When i cut back on the "must do", "have to" driven thinking, did some small cuts in my daily load, letting the bucket empty somewhat, even so slightly the waking directly when falling asleep went away. Its not easy, but almost the same amount of work can be done, through a gentler mindset. I got two teen kids. Used to put lots of pressure on my self on their behalf when I was unable to do the things i did earlier. Think now that I was tormenting myself. I have now told them why I'm not ok, and that it will get better in time. I have found them both to be fantastic in understanding, and helping. Now days I try to do only low stress things with them. Watching movies in the evenings with lots popcorn. Board games. Never promising to do this and that, instead doing things on the days i'm better. Try to be kind and gentle with yourself as much as possible.

Fish oil, magnesium, melatonin. Keep the bedroom very dark and cool -- use blackout shades and sleep mask. Turn off lights at nightfall. No computer in the evening.

I think Altos magnesium and low dose melatonin are good things. Eating easy digestible foods has helped me. (Vitamin D might also, but start real low dose in the beginning, 150-300 IU in the morning.) Sleep problems are tricky. I don't think there is one simple fix and mine is not all that fixed yet. It needs to be cornered from all sides. Nutrition, stress reduction, some supplements, being kind to oneself. Being close to the ones you love. Stabilize meds. Sleep hygiene (dark, temperature, quiet, regular hours, right amount and quality of food at the right time before bed, good bed and pillow, restful routines before bed.) Massage. Slow walks for 30-60 minutes. Keep a sleep diary is good. Enter a number from 0-8 for hour slept. I use the hours more like a how did the sleep go/feel than actual hours. If i slept only aprox 2 hours and i feel rested like 4 write 4 hours. Trying to hard to get the exact amount of hours can stress you out at night. I also write down meds and if there where some unexpected thing that day. It helps to evaluate the things i try. What kind of fish do you catch? I used to love fishing.

I fish for maine lobster. Sometimes cod or mackerel will come up in the gear. Nothing better than being out on the water :-) I gave up counting hr of sleep and took the clock out of my room it only made my anxiety worse. Last night I took 3/4 mg melatonin and 900 mg valerian root with passion flower. Had a couple jump awakenings and then fell a sleep from 10.00pm to 6.30am. I think that's an improvement. I hope it holds true. Another thing I have noticed is I love milk I can go threw a gallon in a couple of days it seems to make my anxiety better if I run out for a few days I can tell. I thought it was all in my head but after a while of watching for it I seem to see a difference with or without.wishing you well :-)

Thanks bubble this sight is a very good thing. It makes me feel not alone :-) im sorry about your experience with lexapro. I didn't have any trouble getting on it it was the first ad I had ever taken. But when I was told to quit cold is where every thing fell apart. After reinstatement it has done nothing but my body thinks I need I and quitting is a nightmare. I to have xanax but have been stubborn enough to only use it on some nights when I couldnt sleep. It never helped my anxiety any. And would notice day's later it would give me rebound anxiety. They wanted me to take klonopin twice daily every day for a month and I refused. My anxiety about taking meds is not good. They assured me I wouldnt become addicted but. They also say ad are not addicting. I think xanax can be a good thing but also very bad. It helped me some nights to sleep and I was to afraid to abuse the only thing that would help me. My body after awhile gets used to something then when I stop using it it never works again. Im glad you liked that book I have lived here all my life and have been brought up in the lobster fishing industry. My son will be the eighth generation fisher man. we will get threw this eventually I guess rome wasn't built in a day. Wishing you well :-)

I was really facinated by the book ;) The impression it gave was that it was quite a realistic depiction. But don't know if you would agree ;)

Wow, your son will be the eight generation lobster fisherman! I believe this nightmare will be behind you by April when the catching season starts. After I reinstated Lexapro (went from 2.5 mg to 0 since my doctor also kept persuading me ADs are not addictive), it took me 2 months to start feeling better. 3 months after I'm still not near as well as I was before I quit but lot more bearable.

But the fact that you have only this drug and that it is your first drug should make things a lot more easier for you. As you say, time and patience are key in these matters. But we already have an advanage over them by learning their nasty tricks, having all this wonderful peer support from all over the world and being encouraged to look at alternative ways of dealing with our anxieties.

Reading about windows and waves helped me tremendously to understand what I was going through, not despair and more importantly, not go after more drugs. I can't believe I sound like a junkie after all I ever wanted was to function and be able to study and later work. I didn't take any time off work during withdrawal which was awfully hard but I think also helped me to pull through. Distractions are sometimes very helpful.

All the best and see you around!

We'll get there ;)

We'll get there ;) I find distractions help greatly! I under stand about feeling like a junkie on pills but its not our fault. Given the chance to do it over we all would have done things differently. But I have learned a lot from this. My wife has had to take Ad on several occasions. First paxel when we were in high school then Prozac after our son was born. Then Celexa just recently. Her problem has been depression primarily. But the difference is when she feels better after time she just quits cold and never has any wd at all. Me I am a lot different but I have learned our son has some anxiety issues. Not bad but I would never let him take any Ad. So if I have had to suffer so he doesn't than I am glad to do it. They need to warn patients of the potential and let us decide for our selvs. I quit lexapro cold turkey july 2012. And was re introduced at the end of agust 2012 it was months before I was semi ok and im still not close to what I was pre Ad but our bodys do amazing things we are constantly healing weather we see it or not that's what we do. I will look for some other books about maine and fishing you might like and give you the names. I havent read the book you speek of. But I probably can answer most questions take care :-) bubble

Only had to take 3/4 melatonin last night to sleep no jumping as I go to sleep. I guess that is getting better :-) I just wish the repetitive anxiety would go away.

Hi lobster,

I had the jumping thing too and like you, mine went away. Some nights I slept (or 'rested') sitting up propped on pillows and I remember the first night I could lie down and fall asleep was heaven. So you see, things do slowly change and the anxiety will lessen too. Try not to focus on it too much and you'll be able to cope. We're all rooting for you!

Good to hear the melatonin is helping. More sleep will help your nervous system to settle down.

Hi Alto things seem to be improving I ordered the magnesium but the weather has been so bad no boats are running the mail.I hope it helps with the anxiety. I am also taking the fish oil 3 times a day. My wife liked the thought of making a cream with the magnesium. I guess I should eat a healthier diet being on the water I can get a lot of sea food It might help :-)Hope all's well

Hi Lobster,

I am glad you found something that helps you sleep, I have had really bad insomnia too and I know it's one of the worst things to just be unable to sleep. I still have it, but it's much better now. I am glad to have gotten rid of the sleeping pill which didn't help me all that much anyway. I now take melatonin like you and magnesium. I still get the "jumps" when I go to sleep and it wakes my boyfriend up each time! (He is so good and patient.) I find a good side to the jumps though- it actually means that I AM going to go to sleep soon!! :)

All the best. Take care.

HI Alto I have a question.do you think it will be a quicker transition this time for me from the spare bedrom to my own bed?
it took me over a year to be able to sleep with my wife and not jump every time I fell asleep. The last two months were good it was nice to fall asleep any where I wanted and not be jolted awake. I hope I havent ruined that. I couldnt sleep with my wife last night but I didnt have to take any thing to sleep including melatonin in the spare room thank you. hope all is well :-)

It will take as long as it takes. Making your bedroom very dark and quiet would help.

Have you tried sleeping with ear plugs, I find they have made a big difference to my quality of sleep.

I'm not a doctor.  My comments are not medical advise. These are my opinions based on my own experience and what I've learned. Please discuss your situation with a medical practitioner who has knowledge of tapering and withdrawal...if you are lucky enough to find one.

My Introduction Thread

Full Drug and Withdrawal History

Brief Summary

Several SSRIs for 13 years starting 1997 (for mild to moderate partly situational anxiety)

Xanax PRN

Various other drugs over the years for side effects

2 month 'taper' off Lexapro 2010

Short acute withdrawal, followed by 2 -3 months of improvement then delayed protracted withdrawal

DX ADHD followed by several years of stimulants and other drugs trying to manage increasing symptoms

Failed reinstatement of Lexapro and trial of Prozac (became suicidal)

May 2013 Found SA, learned about withdrawal, stopped taking drugs...healing begins.

Protracted withdrawal, with a very sensitized nervous system, slowly recovering as time passes animal25.gif

Supplements which seem to help:  High doses of Vitamin C, Magnesium, Garlic and Ginger.  Taurine, Vit D3, L-Theanine and Inositol. I'm one of the rare people who react badly to fish oil.

June 2016 - Started daily juicing, mostly vegetables and lots of greens.

I am waiting for earplugs and an expensive Tempur-Pedic sleep mask (it has open spaces for your eyes--I just could not tolerate anything touching my eyes) to come from Amazon. I would have moved into the spare bedroom long ago if we had one.
1st round Prozac 1989/90, clear depression symptoms. 2nd round Prozac started 1999 when admitted to dr. I was tired. Prozac pooped out, switch to Cymbalta 3/2006. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder due to mania 6/2006--then I was taken abruptly off Cymbalta and didn't know I had SSRI withdrawal. Lots of meds for my intractable "bipolar" symptoms.
Zyprexa started about 9/06, mostly 5mg. Tapered 4/12 through12/29/12
Wellbutrin. XL 300 mg started 1/07, tapered 1/18/13 through 7/8/13
Oxazepam mostly continuously since 6/06, 30mg since 12/12, tapered 1.17.14 through 8.26.15
11/06 Lithium 600mg twice daily, 2.2.14 400mg TID DIY liquid, 2.12.14 1150mg, 3.2.14 1100mg, 3.18.14 1075mg, 4/14 updose to 1100mg, 6.1.14 900 mg capsules 7.8.14 810mg, 8.17.14 725mg, 8.24.24 700mg...10.22.14 487.5mg, 3.9.15 475mg, 4.1.15 462.5mg 4.21.15 450mg 8.11.15 375mg, 11.28.15 362.5mg, back to 375mg four days later, 3.4.16 updose to 475 (too much going on to risk trouble)
9/4/13 Toprol-XL 25mg daily for sudden hypertension, tapered 11.12.13 through 5.3.14, last 10 days or so switched to atenolol
7.4.14 Started Walsh Protocol

I sleep better in the other room but I miss sleeping with my wife. Its hard because I cant even take a vacation because of the jumping as I go to sleep. I hope the ear plugs and mask help you. Im up before sun rise and working so I guess a mask is not needed. I dont think I could sleep with any thing touching my eyes either. Good luck and hope it helps you :-)

The light in the smoke detector on the ceiling bothers me, the moonlight at the curtain edges, and especially when my husband turns on his iPhone in the dark. I am one high maintenance sleeper. But I would miss sleeping with him (most nights, lol). And don't even get me going on the sound sensitivity issues. But I do wonder how I'll wake up with earplugs and without sensing that first gray before dawn.

Put tape over the light in the smoke detector. Don't know what to do about the husband.
