My sleeping is still improving haven't taken any thing for sleep in a while and the jumpiness seems to be gone. I have completely changed my diet. Salads every day fish oil every day still waiting for the magnesium to arrive. Some things seem to be changing if I have anxiety it seems to be only in my head my body does not seem to follow any more. I guess that's a good thing. My pharmacist told me he could crush some pills and put it in a suspended solution for me. I think I will hold at 2.5 mg lexapro for a while though and then tapper at 10% thank you for all of your help :-)
Lexapro 1 1/8 mg and 10 mg Propranolol. I jumped down to 2.5 mg lexapro from 5 mg on oct 2 where I had been for 7 months and went from 2.5 mg to 1 1/8 mg not sure when maybe around nov 2 went back up to 2.5 mg December 30 . May 13 small cut lexapro 2.5 mg down to 2.4 mg 9/4/14 dropped 8.33% to 2.2 mg 10/13/14 dropped to 2mg lexapro. Back up to 2.2 mg 10/15/14. Dropped to 2 mg lexapro 11/26/14. Dropped 10% to 1.8 mg lexapro 1/11/15. 2/23/15 . Cut of 5%.
3/11/15 cut of 5% 5/3/15 cut of 5% 6/3/15 cut of 5% 7/19/15 cut of 5%. Continued small cuts of 5% every six weeks or so untill October 8th 2016 ,last dose . Last dose was 0.8mg. Currently taking 10 mg propranolol in the afternoon. 1400mg fish oil. 250 mg magnesium, 250 mg L-Taurine, 500 mg Tumeric. 40 mg Zocore simvistatin.

I received the magnesium glycinate a few day's ago and have been taking 50mg. They're 100 mg pills I haven't noticed any side affects. The bottle says to take one or two pills daily. I was wondering if I should take a whole pill or stay at a half for a while. Anny suggestions thank you :-)

Thanks I am now spreading the dosage out over the day. I also noticed dry mouth for a while. That is now gone but the foggy slightly dizzy head remains. Guess it's nothing I cant handle. Im not sure if its actually the fish oil or it could be from the withdrawal thank you :-)

Try taking 50mg mag glycinate twice a day, then 3 times a day. If no problems, increase to 100mg in the evening, then gradually increase other doses.

I seem to be having good luck with the magnesium. Im going to take it three times a day starting today. I would like my 12 year old son to start taking it. Maybe it would help with his anxiety some any recommendations as to the dosage for him? Thank you very much :-)

All bodies need magnesium, but we usually get it through the food we eat.  Too much magnesium will cause loose bowels.  Magnesium can be supplemented to bowel tolerance.

I Googled and found information from Dr. Weil. He has information on his site indicating that the NIH RDA is 170 mg for children between 7 and 10 years and 120 mg for children between 4 and 6 years of age.  You could start with 170 mg and if his bowel function is normal increase by 50 mg.  Keep in mind that the RDA is widely considered too low, but it is probably a safe guideline to start with.

It will take as long as it takes. Making your bedroom very dark and quiet would help.[/quote

Had a bad night last night couldn't sleep kept waking up every five or ten minuets. I had to take Xanax. Is it possible I am dependent on Xanax? I have been taking it on and off for over a year. At first it was 1 mg at night when I couldn't sleep. But that was usually about only about twice a month. Then I was told I could take 2 mg at night. But it was only a couple times a month. When t started not sleeping around Christmas time I took 2 mg Xanax for about 4 or 5 days. And I haven't taken any thing since. And it's been almost 3 weeks with out any meds to sleep. I haven't noticed any with drawls to the Xanax. I didn't think I was taking it enough to get adickted. Any suggestions I hate taking any thing for sleep I have been sleeping really well for the last few weeks. I just am not shore what to do. I'm taking magnesium 50mg three times a day is that maybe to much. I never take Xanax during the day as it has never helped my anxiety nothing has changed for my sleep to get messed up thank you :-)
Lexapro 1 1/8 mg and 10 mg Propranolol. Dropped 10% to 1.8 mg lexapro 1/11/15. 2/23/15 . Cut of 5%.

Its best not to take Xanax at all, but from what you have written, it doesn't sound like you have become addicted to it.  If you have been sleeping well for 3 weeks without taking it, then one night of bad sleep is probably related to something else.

If you don't sleep well for the occasional night or two, try not to worry about it, its quite common.  Worrying about not sleeping can make the problem worse.

Have a look at our 'sleep tips' section for non-drug methods to improve sleep:

http://survivinganti...rawal-insomnia/

I take 200mg Magnesium twice a day and that seems to be right for me.  Too much magnesium generally causes diarrhea, not insomnia.

I'm not a doctor.  My comments are not medical advise. These are my opinions based on my own experience and what I've learned. Please discuss your situation with a medical practitioner who has knowledge of tapering and withdrawal...if you are lucky enough to find one.

My Introduction Thread

Full Drug and Withdrawal History

Brief Summary

Several SSRIs for 13 years starting 1997 (for mild to moderate partly situational anxiety)

Xanax PRN

Various other drugs over the years for side effects

2 month 'taper' off Lexapro 2010

Short acute withdrawal, followed by 2 -3 months of improvement then delayed protracted withdrawal

DX ADHD followed by several years of stimulants and other drugs trying to manage increasing symptoms

Failed reinstatement of Lexapro and trial of Prozac (became suicidal)

May 2013 Found SA, learned about withdrawal, stopped taking drugs...healing begins.

Protracted withdrawal, with a very sensitized nervous system, slowly recovering as time passes animal25.gif

Supplements which seem to help:  High doses of Vitamin C, Magnesium, Garlic and Ginger.  Taurine, Vit D3, L-Theanine and Inositol. I'm one of the rare people who react badly to fish oil.

June 2016 - Started daily juicing, mostly vegetables and lots of greens.

Take as little Xanax as possible, in the lowest effective dose, as infrequently as you can.

You are not taking much magnesium. You may wish to increase your evening dose by 50mg to start. If that feels okay, increase the others, too, one at a time.

Then, you may want to gradually ramp up your evening dose to 200mg or more.

Thank you I slept good last night :-) I try and never take xanax only when I panic about sleep. It has never helped my anxiety ever. I dont even bother I do get troubled over the dosage I take if I have a problem sleeping which is 2mg. Any less and it will not even work. But I only take it maybe once or twice a month if that. I do try and be very careful with it I was given a prescription of 30 1 mg pills on oct 7 and still have 20 left. I will try and up the dosage of magnesium. Is it possible to have with drawl to fish oil? I stopped for a few days because of a foggy head wich did get better after stoping. But maybe it was helping my sleep. I started taking it again today maybe a little less? I also take a statin zocore for cholesterol maybe they dont get along together. On a better note my son has been taking 50mg magnesium and a fish oil pill a day and I have seen a big improvment in his mood much happier and more energetic the old kid I new I cant believe it would make a big difference thank you for everything :-)
Lexapro 1 1/8 mg and 10 mg Propranolol. Thank you for your response :-) I try not to take xanax I understand about the dangers and definitely dont want a problem with it. Its difficult I have developed a fear of not sleeping. Thankfully when I dont have the sleep jerks I usually sleep good and nothing is needed to sleep. I have noticed im not shure if its from the magnesium or not but if I take it around 3or 4 in the afternoon by 6 I cant hardly keep my eyes open and by 8.30 im asleep and dont usually wake up until 5am. Xanax has helped me threw some tough sleeping problems but I never take it for long. And it has never helped my anxiety. Thanks again :-)

As long as you don't take the Xanax more than you've been taking it, you should be fine. You just don't want to take it so often that your brain begins to remodel receptors in response to it being on board. That's when the problems start.  Once or twice a month shouldn't be enough to cause that.

Started on Prozac and Xanax in 1992 for PTSD after an assault. One drug led to more, the usual story. Got sicker and sicker, but believed I needed the drugs for my "underlying disease" as I was told. Long and tragic story...lost everything. Life savings, home, physical and mental health, relationships, friendships, ability to work, everything.

Now tapering, ironically (but not surprisingly) healthier and more functional than I ever was during the years on the "meds," even with withdrawal (usually fairly mild at this slow pace).

Started multidrug taper in Feb 2010.  Doing a very slow microtaper, down to low doses now and feeling SO much better, getting my old personality and my brain back! Able to work full time, have a full social life, and cope with stress better than ever. Not perfect, but much better. After 23 lost years. Big Pharma has a lot to answer for. And "medicine for profit" is just not a great idea.

Feb 15 2010:  300 mg Neurontin  200 Lamictal   10 Celexa      0.65 Xanax   and 5 mg Ambien

Feb 14 2011:   86 mg Neurontin   144 Lamictal,    5.5 Celexa   0.42 Xanax      1.9 mg Valium

Feb 16 2012:   10 mg Neurontin   115 Lamictal     3.7 Celexa   0.285 Xanax     2.0 Valium

Feb 22 2013:   86 Lamictal    2.05 Celexa       0.23 Xanax      1.8 Valium

Feb 10 2014:   62 Lamictal    1.1 Celexa         0.135 Xanax    1.8 Valium

Feb 10 2015:   50 Lamictal      0.875 Celexa    0.11 Xanax      1.5 Valium

Feb 15 2016:   47.5 Lamictal   0.75 Celexa      0.0875 Xanax    1.42 Valium

Now:                43                    0.625                 0.0775            1.3

I'm not a doctor. Any advice I give is just my civilian opinion.

Miserable night sleep. I took 400 mg magnesium yesterday last night couldnt.sleep just layed in bed in a daze got up for a while started to dose after a while kept jumping awake. Tried melatonin then took some Seroquel I thought it would be better than xanax. Did sleep after hours of trying. Terribly hungover this morning from the Seroquel. I dont know my sleep is very inconsistent lately by six at night im tired and by nine I am a sleep in 5 minutes and then on other nights my sleep goes to nothing and nothing has changed. I wouldnt think the magnesium would be keeping me awake. Im so tired of this sleep issue I just want to go back to the way I used to be maybe I will cut back on the magnesium a little? Thanks everyone

What are you taking at night and for how long have you been taking it?

I took 25mg Seroquel last night and 3/4mg melatonin. 3nights ago I took 2 mg xanax to sleep. And I haden't taken any thing for sleep for almost three weeks prior to the 2mg xanax. And nothing in between xanax and the one night of Seroquel. I have also been noticing derealization thats better now. My magnesium at night last night was 200mg night before 150 night before that 100 and it had been 100 for a fiew days. Total magnesium yesterday 400mg. My head still feels hung over from the Seroquel. Today I have only taken 100mg magnesium. I have also noticed some heart palpitations comes and goes. Sorry if this is hard to follow thank you very much :-)

I don't think the problem was the magnesium.

If I were you, I would stay away from Seroquel and Xanax.

I think at this point, randomly taking xanax and seroquel is worse than missing a few nights sleep.  Not sleeping at all for a whole night or even 2 - 3 nights in a row is very unpleasant, awful, frightening, but eventually, everyone falls asleep unless prevented from doing so.

I try not to take xanax I understand about the dangers and definitely dont want a problem with it. Its difficult I have developed a fear of not sleeping. Thankfully when I dont have the sleep jerks I usually sleep good and nothing is needed to sleep.

I think a lot of people get addicted to drugs for sleep because of this fear.  But in reality, there is nothing particularly harmful about missing the occasional night sleep, or even sleeping badly for several nights in a row.

Randy Gardner holds the scientifically documented record for the longest period of time a human being has intentionally gone without sleep not using stimulants of any kind. Gardner stayed awake for 264 hours (11 days), breaking the previous record of 260 hours held by Tom Rounds of Honolulu. LCDR John J. Ross of the U.S. Navy Medical Neuropsychiatric Research Unit later published an account of this event, which became well-known among sleep-deprivation researchers.

The Guinness World Records record stands at 449 hours (18 days, 17 hours), held by Maureen Weston, of Peterborough, Cambridgeshire in April 1977, in a rocking-chair marathon

If you can relax about not sleeping and just focus on resting and staying calm through the night, you will help yourself by minimizing another source of stress (fear of not sleeping).  Eventually you will break the cycle and a more natural rhythm of sleep will return.

I just want to underline this one more time as somebody who is so painfully hooked on Xanax and it all started with fear: Randomly taking Xanax and Seroquel is worse than missing a few nights sleep.

The fear went away but Xanax stayed for 14 years and when I felt better and good about my life, it was Xanax that would bring me down. And 2 mg is for me a very high dose! (It's effective in 0.25 when you first start taking it). I'm taking 2 mg because I was gradually increasing it when lower doses stopped doing the trick and now 4 tablets of 0.5 mg per day do nothing from me except preventing me from feeling horrible distress as a result of not taking them.

There are a lot of guided meditations on you tube which can help us to relax and sleep. But as Petu says not sleeping is not the end of the world. Drugs are hell and Xanax is a snake: before you notice it, it's round your neck...

Current: Xanax 0.625 (down from 2 mg in 2013), Lexapro 3.9 mg (down from 5 mg 2013)

Amitriptyline (tricyclic AD) and clonazepam for 3 months to treat headache in 1996 (19 yrs)
1999. - present Xanax prn up to 3 mg.
2000.-2005 Prozac CT twice, 2005-2010 Zoloft CT 3 times, 2010-2013 Escitalopram 10 mg
went from 2.5 to zero on 7 Aug 2013, bad crash 40 days after
reinstated to 5 mg Escitalopram 4Oct 2013 and holding liquid Xanax: 0.4 mg every 5 hours
28 Jan 2014 Xanax 1.9, 18 Apr  2015 1 mg,  25 June Lex 4.8, 6 Aug Lexapro 4.6, 1 Jan 2016 0.64  Xanax

9 month hold

24 Sept 2016 4.5 Lex, 17 Oct 4.4 Lex (Nov 0.63 Xanax, Dec 0.625 Xanax), 1 Jan 2017 4.3 Lex, 24 Jan 4.2 Lex, 5 Feb 4.1 Lex

24 Mar 4 mg Lex, 10 Apr 3.9 mg Lex

Supplements: Omega 3 + Vit E, Vit C, D, magnesium, Taurine, probiotic

I'm not a medical professional. Any advice I give is based on my own experience and reading.

Thank you last night was miserable I did sleep but kept having body jerks and racing thoughts all night. When I was first given xanax for anxiety it was 1mg and it did nothing 2mg does nothing for my anxiety thats why I dont take it for that the only thing it has helped is when I have the constant sleep jerks. Im going on two years like this now im scared I have a problem with xanax I have taken 2 mg xanax once since dec 31.xanax and the other sleeping meds have been a crutch. Im so afraid of not sleeping. This is what started every thing for me im also terrified of getting hooked on meds. I have taken Seroquel in the past for a month because of not sleeping up to 150mg every night. I just stoped taking that one day thankfully I didnt have any with drawls. I guess my biggest fear is that the sleep jerks wont stop and I wont sleep and I will end up back in the hospital. My mind knows better but the fear gets the best of me thank you for your understanding :-)

I never used to worry about sleep if I missed a night so what I would sleep better the next night. But with these sleep jerks it does keep me from sleeping at all. the first time it happend I had no sleep for 3 days ended up in the hospital thought I was never going to sleep again and die. Sorry if I seem dramatic so in the last two years I have developed a severe fear of not sleeping but im not shore if that feer is stronger than being addicted to sleep meds. I tell my self even with the sleep jerks if I go long enough with out sleep I will sleep. Unfortunately when im stressed I tend to research it makes me feel better so I have read all the article about sleep. Some things make me feel better about not sleeping and other things not so much. Its hard when the sleep jerks stop I sleep good with no meds. My grand mother is 83 and has been on valium since the 70s actually she didnt even know she was she just took what the dr prescribed. I dont want to end up like that with xanax. The fear is terrible I used to be able to handel it and shrugg it off but I cant do that so well any more. I do agree about the random use of Seroquel and xanax as opposed to not sleeping. I am trying thank you for caring :-)

Yes, many of us have experienced that very problem with sleep. Please read the topics in the Symptoms and Self-care forum.

It does get better -- you've experienced this yourself.
