Addax: 30 years with Fluoxetine and tapering

It does work that way sometimes even a scare could throw me not even something real but a tv commercial could set me back.  I hate feeling vulnerable all the time when I use to feel so strong I am impressed you go to a gym... lord I have not been in  a decade now.. made attempts but failed. So good for that... that speeding up of life and time compression as in hours being minuted I have that a lot still.. time warp crap.  It has never gone away for me.. and I think it is part of wd it would be the same for me as you describe ... and if there is going to be anything you can do to lessen the fallout it is this...

meditation getting to a really deep state of meditation if you can has been the only thing that counteracts that circling the drain fear... or for me that is what works if anything is going to.

Other than that giving in and accepting it ... who wants to do that nobody I know or not me .. not till I have tried everything and am spent then I give.

Wishing you peace

B

WARNING THIS WILL BE LONG
Had a car accident in 85
Codeine was the pain med when I was release from hosp continuous use till 89
Given PROZAC by a specialist to help with nerve pain in my leg 89-90 not sure which year
Was not told a thing about it being a psych med thought it was a pain killer no info about psych side effects I went nuts had hallucinations. As I had a head injury and was diagnosed with a concussion in 85 I was sent to a head injury clinic in 1990 five years after the accident. I don't think they knew I had been on prozac I did not think it a big deal and never did finish the bottle of pills. I had tests of course lots of them. Was put into a pain clinic and given amitriptyline which stopped the withdrawal but had many side effects. But I could sleep something I had not done in a very long time the pain lessened. My mother got cancer in 94 they switched my meds to Zoloft to help deal with this pressure as I was her main care giver she died in 96. I stopped zoloft in 96 had withdrawal was put on paxil went nutty quit it ct put on resperidol quit it ct had withdrawal was put on Effexor... 2years later celexa was added 20mg then increased to 40mg huge personality change went wild. Did too fast taper off Celexa 05 as I felt unwell for a long time prior... quit Effexor 150mg ct 07 found ****** 8 months into withdrawal learned some things was banned from there in 08 have kept learning since. there is really not enough room here to put my history but I have a lot of opinions about a lot of things especially any of the drugs mentioned above.
One thing I would like to add here is this tidbit ALL OPIATES INCREASE SEROTONIN it is not a huge jump to being in chronic pain to being put on an ssri/snri and opiates will affect your antidepressants and your thinking.

As I do not update much I will put my quit date Nov. 17 2007 I quit Effexor cold turkey.

The good news is, last weeks bad news and resulting tailspin doesn't appear to have facilitated a wave. I know it hasn't been a week yet, but there has t even been any symptoms slowly creeping in. I'm taking this as a sign that my stability is not quite as fragile as I'd anticipated. I still considerate it shatter proof, but I think the infrastructure might be strengthening. Hooray for long holds!

1988-2012: Prozac @ 60mg (with a few stops and starts)

Fall 2012: Returned to 40mg after discontinuing and horrid withdrawal

Fall 2013: 40mg Fluoxetine, added 150mg Wellbutrin to treat fatigue

Winter 2014: Attempting to taper both (too fast)

April 2014: 9mg Fluoxetine + 37.5 Wellbutrin

Summer 2014: 8 mg Fluoxetine + 0 Wellbutrin (way too fast a drop)

Late summer/Early Fall 2014: Debilitating Withdrawal symptoms

Fall 2014 - Wellbutrin successfully kicked to the curb but…

Oct- Dec 2014: Panicked reinstatement of Fluoxetine ->30mg - held for 5yrs

Jan 2021: taper to 20mg Fluoxetine  then tapering by 1mg every 2-3 months

Fall 2022 - held at 10mg->December 2022: 9mg->Feb 2023: 8mg ->March 2023: brassmonkey slide begins: 7.8mg -> 7.6 -> 7.4->2 week hold (April)->7.2->7mg->6.8->2 week hold->6.6-> 1-month hold ->(June)-6.5->4-week hold-> (July)-6.4 (discontinued brassmonkey slide and slowed taper)-> (Aug)-6.2->(Sept)-6.0->(Oct)-5.9->(Nov)-5.8->(Dec)-5.7->wave!->(Jan)-5.8->(Feb)-6mg and holding.

I think you would have had effects by now. Maybe the dissociative state cushioned things a little and your long hold gave you a steady platform to stand on.

I'm glad you bounced

Please note - I am not a medical practitioner and I do not give medical advice. I offer an opinion based on my own experiences, reading and discussion with others. On Effexor for 2 months at the start of 2005. Had extreme insomnia as an adverse reaction. Changed to mirtazapine. Have been trying to get off since mid 2008 with numerous failures including CTs and slow (but not slow enough tapers)Have slow tapered at 10 per cent or less for years. I have liquid mirtazapine made at a compounding chemist.

Was on 1.6 ml as at 19 March 2014.

Dropped to 1.5 ml 7 June 2014. Dropped to 1.4 in about September.

Dropped to 1.3 on 20 December 2014. Dropped to 1.2 in mid Jan 2015.

Dropped to 1 ml in late Feb 2015. I think my old medication had run out of puff so I tried 1ml when I got the new stuff and it seems to be going ok. Sleep has been good over the last week (as of 13/3/15).

Dropped to 1/2 ml 14/11/15 Fatigue still there as are memory and cognition problems. Sleep is patchy but liveable compared to what it has been in the past.

DRUG FREE - as at 1st May 2017

I'm glad I bounced too, dalsaan.  Thanks!

I can say that there have been a number of small stressors recently as I prepare to go back to work outside of the home, prepare to move, and prepare for all the fun stress that goes a long with transitions.  I can feel the stress, no question. Increase in irritability, increase in inner restlessness and anxiety, some catastraphizing, after which I experience some pretty intense fatigue.  While some of this would be considered normal stress response, its difficult to express how my experience doesn't feel quite normal. I have little doubt it is exacerbated by withdrawal. I'm just feeling down and disheartened today. However, these feelings seem to short lived in that it's very much situational and doesn't last all day or several days.  Regardless, it's discouraging and currently I want to curl up in a ball on the couch and just turn on the TV.  Once the current issue is resolved (hopefully it will be!) I have no doubt what i'm feeling will lift.  That seems to be how it goes.  Yucky, but still better than being completely knocked on my ass. Hopefully thats not how it will go, anyway.  Despite this stability in the face of a number of stressors, it still feels so fragile and that I could go tumbling off stability's cliff at any moment.  Vulnerable. I feel very, very, vulnerable today.

Aside from that, I continue to hold at 20 mg  and continue to feel relatively stable.

I dislike change and transition.  I hate change and transition while tapering Fluoxetine.

A wave? Some pretty bad anxiety in the morning and doom-n-gloom ruminating. Two things that are also going on: it's about a week before my menstal cycle (every 28 days, like clockwork!), the flurry of preparing to move, and a few smaller but still significant stressors to top things off.

So glad I'm holding.

It's still amazing to me how I can FEEL stressors. How they can...well... Hit like a wave. Even knowing this I still feel blindsided AND once this wave hits my brain forgets that I've been stable and remained so through some challenges. It forgets all that and flips the script so that I'm sitting here thinking, "I'm never going to be well. I'm always going to feel like this." And despite intellectually KNOWING FULL WELL this is not true and that its the mind f**k that is part of withdrawal, I still believe it! How crazy is that??

Part of withdrawals impact on the flight or fight response seems to be sending the stress response into overdrive. The sympathetic nervous system functions to protect us. It makes some sense that negative ruminations are a part of the sympathetic response in overdrive because we're "perceiving" a threat/a danger and want to figure out how to survive it (fight or flee), except it becomes a dysfunctional loop because we become fixated on the negative outcome, again sending the signals to fight or flee... Ugh, and on like that.

Ugh... In short, withdrawal sucks, my brain is a jerk, and I just want to be done with this BS.

I can SO relate to this. Part of the mindf*ck of withdrawal is the complete lack of perspective when it's happening. No sense that this is withdrawal screwing with the brain, not the real self. Had this yesterday. Near tears all morning, feeling lonely but too defective and screwed up to reach out, and complete amnesia of having any friends who care about me anyway . Withdrawal can be like a cruel joke.

On 20 mg of Prozac for about ten years. Sept 2012 started reducing 10% a drop using gram scale, with average of one month holds.

When I'd reached the half way mark, taking 10 mg  powder out of the 20 mg capsules, I switched over to 10 mg capsules and cutting

down from those. Withdrawals got harder the lower I dropped.  May 2013 changed to 5% drops, holding until all withdrawal symptoms gone.

January 2015 changed to liquid prozac (concentration of 20MG per 5 mL) using a 1mL oral syringe.

Current dose of fluoxetine solution equivalent 3.4 mg. Any effort to drop below this has been disastrous so for the time being I'm staying at this level.
Adding 200 mg Tryptophan and 200 GABA a day has helped with anxiety.
Also take 1,300mg Omega- 3,  875mg  Magnesium, 1800mg Curcumin, 1000mg Vit C, 5000 Vit D.

Yes! It's a loss of perspective, Indigo. That's it exactly. A cruel loss of perspective.

We nearly are done with it Addax!    After 25 years for both of us , this is our last taper.

Be patient with yourself   :) .

1987-1997 pertofran , prothiaden , Prozac 1997-2002 Zoloft 2002-2004 effexor 2004-2010 Lexapro 40mg

2010-2012Cymbalta 120mg

Sept. 2012 -decreased 90mg in 6months. Care taken over by Dr Lucire in March 2013 , decreased last 30mg at 2mg per week over 3 months. July 21 , 2013- last dose of Cymbalta

Protracted withdrawal syndrome kicked in badly Jan.2014 Unrelenting akathisia until May 2014. Voluntary hosp. admission. Cocktail of Seroquel, Ativan and mirtazapine and I was well enough to go home after 14 days. Stopped all hosp. meds in next few months.

July 2014 felt v.depressed - couldn't stop crying. Started pristiq 50mg. Felt improvement within days and continued to improve, so stayed on 50mg for 8 months.

Began taper 28 Feb. 2015. Pristiq 50mg down to 45mg. Had one month of w/d symptoms. Started CES therapy in March. No w/d symptoms down to 30mg.

I still can't believe I've taken Fluoxetine for so long. I still get pissed when I think about it. All those doctors...

Anyway, the wave seems to have passed. I must say, I tried the Vitamin C thing and it really did seem to do the trick with the AM anxiety/cortisol. 2000mg first thing in the morning. Placebo or real, I don't care.

At solid two month hold at this point. I will re-evaluate in a month. If it seems stability is withstanding, I will drop to 18mg. i believe my insurance will cover compounding if I can find a doctor where I'm moving to that will make a case for it. If I could get compounded capsules... I will be ecstatic! I have this lazy part of me that simply dreads the measuring and making of solutions.

Alright. That's my check-in for now.

The measuring thing got much easier for me when I switched to liquid from the pharmacy .Less time dosing myself the better. Less time thinking about it.

Have to admit, the couple of weeks after the switch to the pharmacy solution were surpisingly difficult, even though I kept the dose the same.

Interesting that vitamin C helps  you with the morning dreads. I take 1000 mg every morning. Hadn't thought that was contributing to my climb out of  the early morning dark hole.

Still very stable at 20 mg. in fact I have experienced a single w/d symptom in several weeks. All this despite some VERY significant stressors in the last 3 weeks.

Three months at 20mgs. That's 40 fewer milligrams than I'd spent 22+ years on. This has given me incredible satisfaction. I will attempt a decrease in another month if things continue as they have. At that point I will likely hold again for 3 or 4 months.

Also important is that I haven't been experiencing any side effects like bruxism or night sweats. The only side effect that lingers is some mild fatigue that usually hits pretty hard in the early to mid afternoon. Of course, that's not unusual for many people in general. A cup of coffee usually does the trick, or if I'm not doing anything that requires a great deal of focus or energy, sometimes it will pass on its own in a couple of hours.

Hi Addax. This sounds wonderful! You've come so far! I was on ADs for about 22 years, so I'm in the trenches with you. It's a long haul, but if done the right way (sloooowly) it's doable. Unfortunately, i made the mistake of trying to switch to liquid prozac to start my taper, but it didn't work. I reinstated paxil at 7.5 a month ago and waiting to stabilize. I have a funny feeling it's going to take quite a while.

I'm glad you're doing well. It's nice to read this. Looks like you're on track and slowly working your way through. That's really wonderful! I'll be following right behind you!

ADs for approx 20 yrs.

Klonopin .05mg 2009-2013 Last dose Aug 2013

APRIL 21, 2015: switched from Paxil cr 25mg (equiv to 20. mg regular paxil) to liquid Prozac 20 mg. Took prozac for 5 weeks. Didn't work.

MAY 21. 2015: switched back to Paxil - liquid 5mg for 1 week. Then upped to 7.5. Waiting to stabilize at this.

Tapered off prozac in 2 weeks.

This is just amazing and to think that it was less than a year ago that you had the WellB disaster.

I am chuffed for you!

Kinda sad though, when you think about it. Your optimal dose was much lower than what you were prescribed, docs just don't have a clue, they just follow blindly what the drug companies say.

July 2016 I have decided to leave my story here at SA unfinished. I have left my contact information in my profile for anyone who wishes to talk to me. I have a posting history spanning nearly 4 years and 3000+ posts all over the site.

Thank you to all who participated in my recovery. I'll miss talking to you but know that I'll be cheering you on from the sidelines, suffering and rejoicing with you in spirit, as you go on in your journey.

Thank you all for stopping by! Makes my heart glad!

It really is an incredible thing to be stable at 20mg. I want to celebrate, but I'm waiting to get to the 4 month mark because that's when w/d symptoms can kick in hard if they're going to. I'm cautiously optimistic that they won't, but not going to take chances.

Fall 2022 - held at 10mg->December 2022: 9mg->Feb 2023: 8mg ->March 2023: brassmonkey slide begins: 7.8mg -> 7.6 -> 7.4->2 week hold (April)->7.2->7mg->6.8->2 week hold->6.6-> 1-month hold ->(June)-6.5->4-week hold-> (July)-6.4 (discontinued brassmonkey slide and slowed taper)-> (Aug)-6.2->(Sept)-6.0->(Oct)-5.9->(Nov)-5.8->(Dec)-5.7->wave!->(Jan)-5.8->(Feb)-6mg and holding.

Great news Addax.

I'm back. I have to make this entry quick though...

I dropped off the face of SA because of major changes and upheavals and generally wackiness going on. None of it had to do with withdrawal or withdrawal symptoms, or the like. I just couldn't be consistent, so stepped back. I apologize for not giving a warning, but it wasn't planned and it seemed that it was only at extremely inconvenient times that I would think, "Oh! I need to update on SA!"

I will say this... I held at my 20mg for a long time anticipating the 4 month mark the entire time. Waiting to get blindsided by symptoms after have almost none for a couple of months. I kid you not when I tell you things: 4 months to the DAY that I dropped to 20 mg I began to experience some mild akathesia. To the day! I had to laugh when I realized the timing and wondered whether my own worried anticipation had some role in the ironic event.

So this mild akathesia began July 21st and ended about a week later. It was the only symptom to re-emerge. After that week it dissapeared and has not reared its head since. Except for night sweats, which only seems to happen on the nights my dog sleeps directly next to me, I've not had symptoms. My psoriasis is about the same (an autoimmune disorder that came about in 2012 when I first experienced severe and HORRIBLE withdrawal symptoms) and is generally mild.

My moods are "normal" for whatever "normal" means and really things are very good. I'm holding at 20 for a little longer as life things are still new and therefore still sprinkled with stress. I'm hoping to begin tapering again no later January.

My time on the Internet is greatly limited, particularly in contrast to when I was working from home, but I will do my best to resume moderator responsibilities and general community interactions. I'll need some time to read up on old friends and learn about new ones, so bare with me!

So here I am at just over a year still holding at 20 mg of Prozac. I was doing great through major life changes and stressors... Then I swear on the day that marked a year at 20 mg I experienced some Akathasia! I was absolutely mortified. It's stuck around but has slowly decreased in duration and intensity. It was horrible to begin with, but it was uncomfortable and kept me feel anxious for most of the day then exhausted. A huge bummer. Now, unfortunately, I'm struggling with some depression and mild anxiety sprinkled with lots of insecurity. It's almost like a very mild version of of the symptoms I experienced during that horrible withdrawal experience a couple years ago. I'm functioning okay, just feel... Off. Depressed, irritable, insecure, a little anxious, tired, with headaches and some body temp issues during premenstral time.

I don't want to sound like a total bummer. I'm functioning without any issues... It just feels like it's taking a good deal more effort (since April) than it had during the previous 9 months. That said, work has been stressful and frustrating and I'm taking 5 days off to just "be", hoping that will rejuvenate me. We'll see, right?

So I'm going to take a nap here in a minute, then return to poke around and say hi to a few people.

Update #2.

I think it's so important to post his update because it screams how important giving yourself a break is. Multiply it by a million if you're in active withdrawal.

So if you read my post from yesterday it probably sounds disheartened. I felt a little blah when I wrote it. No doubt. I even left a message for my PCP to talk about possibly increasing my Prozac an extra 5 or 10 mg. what's changed since then? I'd gone nearly a year w/o scheduling a day off. Maybe I scheduled one? My work is draining and can take a mental toll. Believe it or not, that's part of what I love about it. But I should have taken a break weeks ago. Today I woke up and realized I had 5 days all to myself because I took two off before the long weekend. It actually started last night as I sunk into my couch knowing it didn't matter when or where I fell asleep... Anxiety? Gone. Gray fog of light depression. Must have left it at work. Insecurity? Meh. Still had a little this morning, but at the end of a run it had dissipated significantly. Not a note of irritability. In one day.

I honestly thought I was slipping. I mean, I guess I was. But this break I've given myself? It feels healing. I had no idea how much I needed it. It's different than calling into sick to work. This was a planned break. No guilt. No strings.

Be kind to yourself. Plan time to be kind to yourself. Plan time to not have plans. Plan to do nothing but be.

Has it really been 6 months since I last posted? Yes. Yes it has.

It's been an odd year so far as my body adjusting to 20mg of Prozac. I thought I'd be squared away by now. It's about 20 months since I've been at 20 mg fluoxetine ( down from 60 mg for 20 years). I'm doing very well, don't get me wrong, but I still have waves every now and again, and the occasional surge of morning anxiety/panic, and even an infrequent bout of Akathisia. I know it could be a another few years before I can claim to be entirely symptom free, but I'm close. I do have periods when I think I should increase to 30mg, or add a little Wellbutrin. Mostly because of the weight gain since stabilizing at 20mgs and to some degree some fatigue I've been experiencing over the last few months. I still struggle with anxiety a bit. It's situational, but leaves me more drained than I think it should.

Aside from how blah I sound right now, in actually doing well... Just writing during a moment of blahness. We all have these moments and in knowing that I shouldn't pathologize it... But I do.

As much as I'd like to tapper to 0, I don't know that I'll attempt it. Not without a compound pharmacy anyway, and insurance probably won't cover that.

So there it is; a status update.

20 years with 60mg is a long time. take your time, as long as it takes. it's ok to hold even for a couple of years if needed. brain needs much time to adjust to new life.

So here it is. Coming up on nearly 2 years at 20mg. It's been mostly good, but I have found that the week before my me strap cycle has become increasingly dark. I'd been feeling "off" since the spring, but the last several cycles have been dark. Depression, fatigue, horrible insecurity and self doubt. Like mini boughts of withdrawal symptoms flooding back for a week or more. My tolerance for anxiety remains fragile since tapering to 20, but it feels like it's been more fragile and I'm plagued ( yes plagued) by horrific negative self perceptions and self doubt, rumination, and hopelessness. I feel right now like I'm on the verge of a wave like I've not had in over 2 years. I thought I'd be safe from this after all this time. Do I want o flee to 40 mg? Hell yes! Do I think that 28 yrs on Prozac has caused physical ( and psychological) dependence? Yeah. So why not bump up? If I'm dependent, I'm dependent. I so wish I knew someone who has been on this for even just 20yrs and managed a drug free life after.

Losing my mind on the west coast...

1988-2012: Prozac @ 60mg (with a few stops and starts)

this will pass. concentrate on healthy lifestyle. rest, things that make you happy and get your mind off analysing. nature. move your body gently. eat superhealthily. have you thought about ditching gluten? it might help. reduce sugar. reduce overprocessed foods. etc. it will pass.

maybe it's tolerance they are talking about (when withdrawal symptoms come up even if you are on a drug)?

in 2002- 0,5 tablet cipramil for half a year, ended it uneventfully. in 2006 - citalopram for half a year, ended in horrific state, ditched the drugs CT. 2007-2008 not feeling well but drug free. in 2008 prozac 20mg + quetiapine 25mg. 2009 tried to stop, ended up in hole after couple of months, started zoloft. 2009-2011 zoloft 50mg. went to 25mg in 2011 summer, it resulted in half a year horrible suffering. reinstated, changed drugs, nothing happened. by 2012 beginning suddenly felt great and CT meds. after 4 months came suddenly most horrible human suffering that's possible. was started on prozac and questiapine. started tapering slowly, GFCF diet and Hardy Nutritionals vitamins in 2013 summer.

current medications: 1) fluoxetine and quetiapine since Aug 2012; 2) Daily Essential Nutrients by Hardy Nutritionals 7 capsules / since May 2013 + omega3; 3) Gluten-free-casein-free diet since june 2013

Started withdrawing slowly since april 2013. Mostly around 10% cuts.

April'13 - March'14: fluoxetine 40mg -> 19,5mg; quetiapine 50mg -> 40mg
April'14-March'15: fluoxetine 19,5mg -> 14,4mg; quetiapine 40mg -> 22mg

April'15-March'16: fluoxetine 14,4mg -> 7,4mg; quetiapine 22mg -> 15mg

April'16-March'17: fluoxetine 7,4mg -> 5,0mg; quetiapine 15mg -> 7,25mg

April'17-March'18: fluoxetine 5,0mg -> 4,0mg; quetiapine 7,25mg -> 0 (as of 1st Feb 2018)!!!!

April´18-March´19: fluoxetine 4,0mg - > 2,3mg. Jumped off fluoxetine 1,4mg due to pregnancy in July 2019. Oct 2019 severe withdrawal syndrome started.

Took mistakenly a complex for hormonal support that included pregnenolone dec2019-april2020. Stopped it april 2020 and immediately severe akathisia started. Have had life threatening akathisia since, 100% disabled, suicidal, very hard to hold on.

Addax, how are you?

Perhaps trying various things to balance your premenstrual hormones? There's not a lot of evidence for one fix, but you might benefit from some mineral or vitamin supplementation, or eschewing certain foods before your cycle.

Addax, I just found and read through your thread and am curious how you are doing now. Please update us when you can; hope you are doing well.

2020: After 18+ years (entire adult life) on Paxil, a dangerous doctor-led "taper" in 2015, and four years tapering off the last 1 mg thanks to SA and the Brassmonkey slide,

I AM COMPLETELY FREE OF PAXIL! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Forever.

2021: Began conservative, proper, CNS-respecting taper of Zoloft, led by the only expert on me -- me. Making own liquid. 5-10% plus holds.

2022: Holding on Zoloft for now. Current dose 47 mg. Hanging in, hanging on. Severe protracted PAWS, windows and waves. While I may not be doing "a lot" by outside standards, things are graaaaadually getting better

Yoga (gentle to medium); walks; daily breath practice; nutrition, fruits/veg; nature; water; EastEnders (lol); practicing self-compassion, self-care; boundaries; connection; allowing feelings; t r u s t ing that I, too, will heal. (--> may need to be reminded of this.)

So it's now more than 2.5 years since I signed on to SA and two years since holding at 20mg of Prozac. I am still at 20. I haven't tried to taper further. I'm terrified of trying. I had some rough patches about 1.5 years ago. Spurts of anxiety and akathesia that would pop up during PMS and last a day or two, and a few episodes of ruminating and a strange worry/ paranoid like thinking that would linger for a day. Knowing it was artifacts of withdrawal helped me not to panic. That said, it's been a good year since I've had any of those symptoms. I still sometimes attribute what is probably just normal mood changes to withdrawal, but I'm generally living a "normal" withdrawal symptom free life.  I had considered taper off this 20 mg... Then perimenipause hit. Given the symptoms are similar to PMS, and withdrawal symptoms always seemed to worsen during my PMS, I decided to hold off.

my check-in here is pretty unremarkable... Which I'm thankful for.  I work full time, go to the gym, walk my dog, have a glass of wine now and then... Pretty boring. Yay!!

If I find a doctor and compound pharmacy and can do a taper w/o measuring, I might start sooner than later. I'll let y'all know.

Still thankful I stumbled upon SA and Alto.

Going to poke around the site a bit.

Nice to hear from you Addax and nice to hear you are doing so well..

Take your time. If you decide to try out tapering again going much less than 10 % might be the way. I can manage only 2 % per month but even going this slow I'm taking almost 30 % less of the drug.

I'm glad you feel better. I'm tapering Prozac too. In my case I'm doomed if I taper and doomed if I don;t because the SSRIs give me severe anhedonia that has become disabling. It started way before I ever tapered. So, in a way, it's a blessing you can function that well after that long on the drug. Even if tapering has been so hard.

Hoping you continue to be that stable and enjoy life.

  • SSRIs 3-4 times in the last 14 years; would take them for 6-8 months and then taper off under dr supervision with no problems.
  • Med history prior to 2015: http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/6012-newbeginning-my-withdrawal-story/?p=267313#entry267313
  • 04/2015: Prozac decreased to 15mg over last 3 months; effexor held steady at 8mg; current effexor XR: 20 beads of a 75mg capsule per day (about 8mg)
  • 06/2015: Prozac: 10mg; effexor XR: 19 beads (about 7.5mg); 07/2015: Prozac: 8.5mg; effexor 18 beads; 08/2015: Prozac: 7.5mg; effexor: 17 beads
  • End of August: withdrawal: depressive symptoms, crying spells. Realized I was measuring prozac dose wrong for the last 2 months. Reinstated Prozac 8.5mg; Kept effexor at 17 beads. Stabilized in 5 weeks.
  • 10/2015: Prozac: 8.5mg; effexor: 17 beads11/2015: Prozac: 1.9ml (7.5mg); effexor: 16 beads12/2015: Prozac: 1.6ml; effexor xr: 16 beads. Withdrawal: neuroemotions
  • 01/2016: prozac: 1.6ml; effexor xr: reinstated 17 beads, withdrawal improved; 02/2016: Prozac 1.5ml; Effexor: 17 beads; 03/2016: Prozac 1.3ml(5mg); Effexor: 17 beads (7mg)-withdrawal (flu-like malaise, lightheaded, drowsy) started end of March. April 15: reinstated Prozac 1.5ml. Stabilized. 2 weeks ok. End of April: Withdrawal (neuroemotions). Eventually stabilized in April-May. Apathy improved.
  • 3 month hold until August. August 2016: apathy came back;

  • October 2016: updosed to Prozac 1.6ml. Bad reaction: anxiety, depression. End of October: went down Prozac 1.5ml. Stabilized over several weeks.

  • Dec 9: tried macca for energy: anxiety/depression. Improved over several weeks, but not completely resolved.

  • Dec 31: cut Effexor 5% to 16 beads. After 9 days: withdrawal anxiety, depression; tried updosing to 17 beads Feb 7 but anxiety got worse; went down to 16 beads

May 2017: Anxiety improved; severe depression continuesSeptember 2017: finally stabilized!!!!!! 09/07/2017-12/31/2017: hold

  • Stable on Effexor 6mg and Prozac 6mg until around 2019-2020. Side effects (fatigue, anhedonia) continued, but had some long lasting windows thanks to therapy. Windows lasting 5-6 months each year followed by relapses.

  • 2019: bad reaction to melatonin 3 mg. Withdrawal after taking it 2 months. When I tried to stop it developed severe insomnia that lasted 6 months even after I reinstated melatonin. Only slept again because I took hydroxyzine 5 mg 3 times a week for few months. Stopped hydroxyzine with no issues. Sleep normalized.

  • 2020-2021: Holding on Prozac 6mg, Effexor 6mg, Tapered melatonin 1 drop every 2-4 weeks down to 1.5mg. Had to hold because further cuts were causing severe drowsiness.

  • 2021: Insomnia returned due to caffeine use for few months (only started after months of use). I also had a concussion at this time.

  • 2023: took hydroxyzine 5-100mg for one month (kept increasing dose every 3 days because I developed tolerance). Tapered for 1 week. After 1 month: withdrawal neuroemotions. Reinstated 5mg 2 months after stopping. Gradually increased to 25mg, stabilized, but withdrawal came back after 10 days. Kept increasing dose and withdrawal returning. Currently at 40mg. Not sure how to stabilize.
