Havn'e heard from most of the friends lately, hoping its a good sign that everyone is doing better!

Another update from me as so much has been going on lately.

as mentioned earlier, since stopping the PPI on 6/4, I had the pleasure experiencing new symptoms including fatigue, weired feeling about the surronding (distant/unreal), foggy/numbed head, facial numbness, strange bright flashes in sleep (always wakes me up by the uncomfortable sensation), severe headache (jaw pain is somewhat less severe but the entire back of head aches with pin/needling most of the time), plus anxiety in the stomach (different from feeling anxious but more like physical), confusion, feeling passing out. My head feels like twisted by something, very uncomfortable. I noticed 1 hour after taking lex each day, the sever pin/needling head always comes and last for about 1-2 hours.

This has been the worst so far since 1 year ago I started tapering. I am still on 2.75, wondering if I should dose up a bit if it is indeeded caused by the effect of the PPI withdrawal (PPI can increase ssir concentration when taking together). I tried a few more drops yesterday afternoon, and feeling even worser today. I can tell my brain is super sensitive to the med, both up and down.

trying to figure out if too much or less meds in my system is getting even harder now.

you all take care,

Ranitidine is a histamine H2-receptor antagonist. Antidepressants act on other histamine receptors.

My guess is they have some kind of interaction when taken together.

My guess too.
Only that it's hard to know how much reduction of lex im getting due to the ppi effect. I hope the reaction won't get even more severe with more new symptoms and soon stabilizing.

That's right. Time to get an update for the condition.

With pretty severe WD symptoms since the top of PPI 13 days ago, I felt so much head pressure and ans strange feelings eventually felt unbearable and decided to up dose more. I took 1 mg extra (about 37% more of the 2.75 based on the assumption that PPI can increase the serotonin concentration up to 50%) 1 hour after the regular dose of 2.7 mg, felt immediate relieve. Two hours after that, heaviness, pain on head also a short feeling of panic started. I was scared at that moment that I up dosed too much. I am relieved now that those are gradually lessoning.

Anyone has experience getting bad result by up dosing and suggestion of the ammont to go back? I know my case is tricky due to the unknown factor of the PPI, but would still think it good to hear from others.

Like any dosage change, updosing can take some time to get used to. Any dosage change takes 4 days to fully register in your system.

Hi dear friends, it has been a while since my last update. Things have been so bumping in the past month for me that I felt almost the end of everything and am losing them all!

Ok, since up dosed to 3.7 mg after stopped the ppi, I had a normal week free of anything bad. I was very excited thinking I found a right dose to live with for a break as both my physical and mental strength has been wored out struggling in the past year tapering. Well, soon after the first week, i had a bad cold with fever. Concerning about the interaction of lexapro with common cold medicine, I took a few Ibprofin for 4 days as it was the only pain killer I ever took together with lex without noticing bad reaction in the past, although I never took more than one pill each day for more than 2 days in sequence. 1 day after the 4 day Ibprofin, A unbearable headache started and it's the same one got me on lex 5 yrs ago also another one early this year both were cured by increased dose of lex. So I had to increase the dose again to 4.5 when I started feeling some releave. The headache went away in couple days. I stayed on 4.5 for 5 day total then reduced it gradually in 2 weeks back to 3.7. Lots of head/face/neck/shoulder pressure, numbness, pain plus lots others I don't remember everyday, now the major suffering is the dosing pain as I call it. I am on liquid, I'm so scared of taking it as every few drops give me quick sharp and massive needling pain all over my head and upper body. I tried to finish the 3.7 in as long as 5-6 hours which helps but still bad enough I feel having a boundary heart attack each time I took few drops.

For the past many years suffering, it's the first time I feel so desparate for urgent help which I know there is none even I go to ER.

Anyone has any thoughts? I'm now trying to hold on the same dose but don't know what I can expect for tomorrow. I know I have been making too much quick changes lately but I had no choices as that moment the symptoms were way too unbearable.

Thanks all for your help!

Lex, it sounds like you've become even more sensitive to Lexapro, and your dosage is too stimulating for you.

I would back down by 0.1mg every 4 or 5 days for a few rounds and see if that helps.

Hi Alto, Thank you so very much!

The initail package came yesterday for their supplements. I tried one pill of the neuro endure bed bed time and could not wake up in the morning after 9 hr sleep (I have been on consistent 8 hr or less) and the pain got even worse. I think some other symptoms like fast heart beaping etc are also caused by it.

I will stop right here.

I tried search on our site for discussions but failed finding any results. Can you tell me more about how to find them?

Thanks again for your great help!

Hi alto, thank you very much for your help with the great information!

My situation is quickly getting real severe with the unbearable and constant pain which causing heart problems and others. I feel I am close to be disabled for work. It happens the company is down sizing and im eligible for a voluntary transition program which I have to sign before 8/14 if I decide to take it. One of the consideration is, if I don't take the package and later I could not work anymore due to the health issue, do you have any information about possibility of getting disability benefits for Ssri caused disability? I did some search online it seems very complicated for mental disability. Thank you so much for the very needed help.

Ps. I failed updating my signature for recent changes due to size limit. My major issue now is the severe and constant pain on head, neck, shoulder, back affecting heart function. The pain is most severe after dosing and last for many hours than get just a bit better later of the day. I am fine with everything else like energy level and mood whenever the pain is tolerable.

Still not sure if this is particularly related to lexapro as I read lots cases like mine associated with this drug, another though is to switch to another Ssri like Prozac but I'm very hesitating the possible risk giving that no idea of equivalent dose and schedule etc.

I know it's too much to ask, but just in case you feel comfortable to share your thoughts. Thanks so very much again.

Lex, have you ever tried acupuncture for the pain?

One thing you need to do immediately is look closely at your company's benefits and see if they have short-term or long-term disability coverage. Sign up for it right away, before you take the "transition" package. (If the disability benefits offer pre-tax vs post-tax, take post-tax -- you will not be liable for income tax on any benefits paid.)

If you become unable to work, California offers disability coverage. Look into those requirements.

Getting US Social Security disability for something like this can take several years and several appeals. You need a couple of doctors or psychotherapists to attest to your disability, which will be a psychiatric diagnosis.

Are you anywhere near Dr. Stuart Shipko in Pasadena? He might be able to help.

Hi Alto, my heartfelt gratitude to all your kindest help! I tried all possible approach to figure out the best option but failed. Thank you so much for thecomprehensive and clear instruction!

Im currently enrolled in the comapny sponsered short and long term disability. If i dont take the package i will be eligible for those giving a doctor can provide suficient documents. If I do take the package, then I won't be eligible for anything except for the social security disability benefits like you said it can be very difficult and long waiting.

I'm close to dr shipko and in fact I just contacted him yesterday for an appointment which is scheduled on 9/2. He talked to me over the phone and asked anything he can help. I explained my med history briefly and said I may need help working out a strategy managing the symptoms for short and maybe switching to another Ssri and tapering for long.

It sounds better for me to NOT take the package even it's a very generous one considering the possibility of long term disability from this so unpredictable situation. I never thought I could be in today's position this soon as I was doing ok taking care of work until just the past two months since first stopping the ppi then taking the pain killer. This past week I have been having mini panic attacks every night on top of the pain only that I just noticed I am having much less pain today. Yes, I have been doing both massage and alcupuncture for the past 4 days.

Again, my sincere thanks alto for my so needed help which in this world no one else I can get from!

Hope everyone is doing ok lately!
I know I'm very behind updating as I have been so sick in the past two and half months since first up dosed from 2.7 lex to 3.7 due to stopping ppi then up dosed again to 4.5 due to taking pain killers for a cold. Symptoms change everyday but are getting worse over time in general. Massive needling, confusion, heart fast beating, high blood pressure, head and entire left body numbness are a few i can remember. Tried to reduce the 4.5 by 0.1-0.5 over weeks but Bright Lighting and panic attack feeling in sleep are way too scary and disturbing so been up and down frequently. I know it's bad but the symptoms are so debilitating can't hold on.

On the other hand, I did not take the package in hoping these are temporary and will pass soon. Now one week after the deadline for the package, I feel seriously I cant work like this. I have another chance to volunteer for layoff which also has a smaller package but still descent. Otherwise I have to go for short term disability covered by the company, as for long term, I feel it's gonna to be too difficult to qualify.

The progress in the past couple months is too fast and beyond my experience. Anyone has any experience or thoughts that things can get real bad this quick still on the drug only up and down for a tiny amount?

I feel dying lots days although not the entire day. Switching drug seems logic as I am getting too much se from lex but very scary giving my sensitivity to even the same drug (between generic and name brand, tablet vs liquid)

My sincere appreciation for your help!

Your company should also be contributing to the State of California short- and long-term disability coverage. This is different from the disability coverage you may be purchasing through your company benefits. You need to check on that, too.

Alto, thanks so much. Hearing you itself helpes a great deal for the day! Never felt so disparate and seriously thinking death entire day. I took 4.3 todayfit stead of 4.5 in the past 10 days for the hope of less pain. I hope it won't took me to another hell by this change.

Hi Alto, I am so greatful to all your kind attention and continuous help!
I'm now in hospital for recent worsened and new symptoms inc loss of conscious, severe muscle stiffness and pain, shut down of the brain, left body numbness, fast heart beat etc to rule out other possible issues.

I hope I'm not having a mild version of SS due to the recent many dose changes ( between 2.7 to 4.5) as I do feel some symptoms suggesting signs of SS.

I will hold on first for sure until i stabilize on a fixed dose of lex before doing anything else. It will be a disaster if I switch while SS is indeed the situation.

Kindest regards

Thank you Alto!
Basic lab and brain CT scan turned out normal. Nothing else from the ER visit. All are as expected.
Sometimes I wish all the problems were from other issues.

You have A great labor day evening!

Update from the visit to Dr Shipko:

He listened carefully and got a good understanding of my med history and recent dose change and issues associated. He asked a few good questions to confirm

He then concluded there is nothing that he knows can be done (as he said, going up, doing down, or staying with the current does all are very problematic).

I asked his experience with helping patients going off ssri inc. reduction rates, and switching meds, he told he never did, instead his patients do themselves and he only got feedbacks on their experience

when being asked about his experience with other patients having similar severity of the WD, he told uncommon but he did see people having worse WD. then he said it is not worth trying (WD) which is consistent with his article in mad of America (playing the Odds)

Giving no suggestion from him, I brought up the idea of switching. He said it may work or may not work, told me to email him if I want to consider it for us to discuss details next appointment.

With all above not very encouraging, I brought up the potential help with disability documents for disability benefits, he immediately denied explaining he is doing consultant work to ALL insurance companies and they warned him NOT to do. I asked ' would that be wrong legally' he agreed but still firmed stated he would not like to do it (to lose his clients). This is very surprising to me to hear it from a doctor who is supposedly responsible to do the right thing for his patients. I have no way of NOT thinking that he is more like a business person than a doctor.

I have to say the results are kind of expected except for 1) his lack of experience helping patients WD and 2) his ethical as a doctor

I don’t feel a need to go back to him any time soon before I am ready for the switch. The good thing is I feel a bit better these couple of days at 4.25mg and hope I can stabilize here for a while.

After trying quite a few doctors in the past, I am further confirmed that no one there you can get more information, knowledge, experience, guidance from than what you can get from Alto and members in this site.

LA, I'm very sorry Dr. Shipko was not more helpful. Perhaps he can refer you to another doctor?

I am glad you're doing a bit better.

Lex, please don't give up on Dr. Shipko. He is extremely cautious but he is also extremely knowledgeable. I believe he wanted you to know that there are no easy answers, and he wanted you to be fully informed about whatever decision you make.

I'm sorry he is no longer certifying disability, but he can limit his practice however he wishes. Perhaps he can suggest other doctors who will, or share his diagnosis with your own current doctor so you current doctor can do the paperwork.

Hi Alto, thank you so very much for the encoragement and great advice!
I will follow up with him per your guidance!

BTW, I found topics on google about possible help of probiotics to increase serotonin. I wanted to check first on our site and with you. Do we have a topic on that? I searched from the forum without finding one.

Kindest regards

Probiotics can improve gut health, which can make you feel better overall. It's unlikely they have much effect on serotonin, your gut is already full of it.

A gentle probiotic may help you. Please use search or Google on this site.

An update since hit badly by increasing the dose from 2.7 to 3.7 then 4.5. Looking back, it was a severe reaction the increased dose with various symptoms brain dysfunction, PR/PD, pain, numbness, needling, pressure all over head, neck, shoulder, back, right leg and occasional depression. Started micro taper by 0.05 mg cut holding for 2 weeks and now on 3.8 mg. very gradually, brain started working, physical symptoms are somewhat lessoned and tolerable. Plan is to continue the slow taper in the next 4+ years.

More to the last update.
It's been most scary and hardest 6 months with lots new symptoms untypical of classical withdrawal. Still feel unbelivable i survived . Hard lessons learned, dose change, both directions can do huge harms to the brain. Also learned from others like Rhi, lp51, steerpike and topics in the forum the most important concept of 'slow taper'. Tried various stuff like Mg, things from road back, probiotics etc, all seemed make things worse, fish oil is the only thing remains. Pain killer is a must not, always causes severe interaction with lex. Been doing daily exercise walking, weight lifting, swimming. Tend to sleep more (like 9+ hours) when being poised by the higher dose.

Hey there,

So did reinstating help you to sleep again? We're you experiencing insomnia at lower doses and now able to sleep at higher? I'm in a similar situation at 2.5 with sleeplessness and wondering what worked for you....

Lexapro 10mg (for approximately 4 years; Prozac 20mg for 5 years and Zoloft 50mg for 5 years)

9mg 09/13; 8mg 10/13; 7mg 12/13; 6mg  02/14; 5mg  04/14; 4mg 06/14

2.5mg 08/29/14

2.25 mg 12/04/14; back to 2.5mg 12/17/14

03/01/15 3.0 mg; 04/01/15 - 5mg;  05/01/15  6mg

Hi Warrior,

I am sorry about your sleep problem caused by the lexapro WD.

I should say in general I dont have problem with sleep, quite opposite, I tend to sleep too much (like I was knockd down by the drug) with the dose I have been taking (all above 2.5/2.7 except for a few days last year). I do notice that I would have some difficulty sleeping for 1-2 nights when I make a cut, then I would be back for lots sleep.

I did a similar taper last year from 10mg to 2mg and hit the wall hard so I backed up to 2.5 later to 2.7 quickly. I dont remember I had much sleeping problem except for couple of nights at 2mg I had my first panic attack.

It seems you just did a cut from 2.5-2.25 lately, if you just started having the sleeping problem, it might help if you go back a bit higher see if that helps. If that woks, you can go down from there much slower (2.5-2.25 is 10%). I am doing 0.05mg cut now which is less than 1%.
