UK members -- talk to an MP?

Muddles

Recommended Posts

I have been speaking to my husband about how we could possibly make change. He has said I should start with our local MP. Has anyone ever tried this?

I could get Dr Healy to send me a lot of info. to back up my case and wondering if those in the uk would think of possibly doing the same?

My husband seems to think we may get somewhere if enough of us do it.

I did think about my mp actually

2000 - sertraline for job anxiety low confidence (17 years old) ..which turned the next 16 years into nightmare!

On/off sertraline severe withdrawals every time. 2014 - felt better as reduced dose of sertraline no more inner restlessness. Doctor rushed off again. Hit severe withdrawal. Lost the little I had in life. Couldn't get stable again on 12.5mg. Was switched to prozac. Had severe reaction to prozac..came off in November 2015 at 6mg as felt more confused and damaged on it..Even more withdrawal ..rage, depression, dyphoria, near constant suicidal ideation, self harm impulses, doom, concrete block in head, unable to do much of anything with this feeling in head..went back on 6mg of sertraline to see if would alleviate anything. It didn't..reduced from December to June 2016 came off at 2.5mg sertraline as was hospitalised for the severe rage, suicidal impulses, and put on 50mg lofepramine which in 2nd week reduced all symptoms but gave insomnia which still have..psych stopped lofepramine cold turkey..no increased withdrawal symptoms new symptoms from lofepramine except persistant insomnia which has as side effect.

Taking Ativan for 8 months for the severe rage self harm impulses 1-3 times a week (mostly 2 times a week) at .5mg. Two months (I'm unsure exactly when the interdose started to happen) ago interdose withdrawal seemed to happen..2 days I think after the Ativan.

Nightmare that could have been avoided!

I also thought about my MP, but as I don't think he'll either care or listen, didn't take it any further.

I also thought about setting up an online petition......though coming up with the exact wording of the petition is proving difficult.

01/2006 Put on Prozac for anxiety and panic attacks 08/2008 Came off Zoloft after tapering don't remember taper, lost weight, felt like had cold constantly, very panicky, pain everywhere (misdiagnosed fibromyalgia), head funny.05/2010 put back on Zoloft03/2012 came completely off Zoloft followed Dr standard taper- no appetite, lost weight (0.5 stone), flu-like feelings constantly, pain everywhere, head funny, nausea, very panicky, very strong emotions etc Lost 1 stone.04/2013 improving. actually put on some weight and hungry most of the time. Still burning pain joints, stomach upset, headache/feel faint and emotions very strong. Chest very painful too.01/2014 improving still. Gained weight!! Still hungry. Still headache/feel faint and strong emotions and chest/shoulder muscles painful. Periods irregular and very painful. Very tired. Joints burn only if eat refined sugars. Started eating fruits again.03/2014 2 years off. Now intolerances developed to nuts and soya. Permanently hungry, Emotions strong but started healing psychological reasons I was put on antidepressants with therapist. Shoulder pain bad, heady often, very tired.06/2014 flu-like symptoms returned, many intolerances, stomach painful, skin crawling feeling, muscles painful, very emotional. :-((

09/2016 over 4.5 years off, no real changes in symptoms, still much pain, headiness, heart weird, digestion bad, hormones unbalanced, nausea yet very hungry, tired, flu like symptoms etc etc.

<p>taking - vit C, probiotics and digestive enzymesI have Aspergers Syndrome.

My grievances lie in many places..

GP - for giving me prescription at a young age with no warning that they could cause further more severe problems. Then leaving me on them, without careful monitoring. The whole 'mental health profession' for failing to recognise side effects / withdrawal and for advocating the medication first and foremost. For wasting my time and theirs by trying to give me coping techniques all while giving me massive doses of drugs that caused agitation.

And of course, pharmaceutical companies.

Wouldn't know where to start, but I will make a start.

Although I feel that I have to be very well and healthy to do this as when I talk about this, I still feel that I'm being judged that I'm mentally unwell and therefore lack credibility.

I am with you on everything there.

I think my biggest grievance was my doctor telling me citalopram wasn't an antidepressant and then telling me not to check side effects as I was 'obviously very worried about taking pills'. Oh and then telling me I needed to see a pych. Nurse a week later as he thought I had bi-polar!

Bloody Akathisia more like!!!!! If he had not have told me not to check side effects I would have done I'm sure. For some reason those words stuck in my head and I really did think I needed these pills.

God - I could go on and on about my treatment over the past 6 years.

We need to get something started.

I suppose it all takes time. I did speak to a lady who was gathering info and doing a big, in-depth investigation. I don't even know where she was from as I was very, very ill at the time. She said it would take 4 years to be able to collect info and get it out there.

Yes, I'm not sure what though. Cannot believe your doctor blatantly lied to you! I must admit I have been stupid coming off them too quickly without consulting my doctor, so I have to take a little of the blame. But then I did this as I felt they were not helping, which they weren't and the doctors just left me and I think they were going to leave me on them indefinitely..but I'm just a number to them..and the biggest joke IS people saying ' consult your doctor before making changes' - do they know what to do? Looks like most of them do not.

AllTrials.net shares some of the same goals as people here. It already has had some impact and I think it is the best path to go down. You can sign their petition as well as keep up with their news updates to see how you can help. The reason harmful drugs are being prescribed is because of fundamental problems in medicine that need to be fixed. Only then will the truth about SSRIs slowly be revealed.

I actually started working on my own website in the summer. The idea was that people who have had problems withdrawing from SSRIs could sign up and input all their drug history as well as withdrawal symptoms and so on. That data was then used to show overall statistics like how long withdrawal lasted on average and what the most experienced symptoms were. I figured if it got enough members it would be hard to ignore. I feel like sites like this are good for support but unfortunately a lot of the bigger picture is hard to see because the information is hidden away in individual stories.

I got a rough version up and running but I don't know if I will ever finish it. I have an anxiety issue that leads me to procrastinate on projects like this. It's very hard for me to overcome. This was actually the original trigger of the depression that led me to go on an SSRI in the first place. I've also been feeling foggy headed more recently and lacking focus, as well as just feeling kind of hopeless about the whole thing. Recently I watched a BBC documentary on SSRI harms from 15 years ago. In 15 years nothing has changed. It sometimes feels like nothing will cause a change anytime soon.

December 2010: 10mg Citalopram

April 2011: 5mg for 2 weeks then cold turkey withdrawal - Extremely bad depression / no emotions

June 2011: Reinstated 10mg - After 3 weeks started getting impulsive suicidal thoughts

July 2011: Cold turkey - Withdrawal hell begins...

January 2021: Reinstated 0.1mg Citalopram as last resort

February 2021: 0.2mg Citalopram for 2 days had bad foggy head so went back down to 0.1mg

Upon reducing I experienced low mood, suicidal thoughts, burning up, low appetite, very bad insomnia, mild diarrhoea

22 Feb 2021: Stopped all Citalopram after panic / depression attack and crying similar to when I reinstated back in June 2011.

4 April 2022: Reinstated 0.1mg Citalopram - Anxiety + foggy head

5 April 2022: Stopped Citalopram - More lasting damage...

  • 4 months later...

Muddles, great idea, and I hope you all do it. I wrote to Senator Barbara Boxer after she made a speech about medical mistakes and so on, and got a canned reply. Maybe in the states we should write to smaller gov people, at the city level.

As for why Healy's brilliance goes unheeded, have a look. I was surprised, not cynical enough. Searched the NY times this morning:

" search - Dr.David Healy - did not match any documents. "

2009: Cancer hospital said I had adjustment disorder because I thought they were doing it wrong. Their headshrinker prescribed Effexor, and my life set on a new course. I didn't know what was ahead, like a passenger on Disneyland's Matterhorn, smiling and waving as it climbs...clink, clink, clink.

2010: Post surgical accidental Effexor discontinuation by nurses, masked by intravenous Dilaudid. (The car is balanced at the top of the track.) I get home, pop a Vicodin, and ...

Whooosh...down, down, down, down, down...goes the trajectory of my life, up goes my mood and tendency to think everything is a good idea.
2012: After the bipolar jig was up, now a walking bag of unrelated symptoms, I went crazy on Daytrana (the Ritalin skin patch by Noven), because ADHD was a perfect fit for a bag of unrelated symptoms. I was prescribed Effexor for the nervousness of it, and things got neurological. An EEG showed enough activity to warrant an epilepsy diagnosis rather than non-epileptic ("psychogenic") seizures.

:o 2013-2014: Quit everything and got worse. I probably went through DAWS: dopamine agonist withdrawal syndrome. I drank to not feel, but I felt a lot: dread, fear, regret, grief: an utter sense of total loss of everything worth breathing about, for almost two years.

I was not suicidal but I wanted to be dead, at least dead to the experience of my own brain and body.

2015: I  began to recover after adding virgin coconut oil and organic grass-fed fed butter to a cup of instant coffee in the morning.

I did it hoping for mental acuity and better memory. After ten days of that, I was much better, mood-wise. Approximately neutral.

And, I experienced drowsiness. I could sleep. Not exactly happy, I did 30 days on Wellbutrin, because it had done me no harm in the past.

I don't have the DAWS mood or state of mind. It never feel like doing anything if it means standing up.

In fact, I don't especially like moving. I'm a brain with a beanbag body.

Granted it is 10 years old, seems not much headway has been made in 10 years... I wonder how many people started taking and had a bad time with Ads in the last 10 years... that was harm that did not have to be.

WARNING THIS WILL BE LONG
Had a car accident in 85
Codeine was the pain med when I was release from hosp continuous use till 89
Given PROZAC by a specialist to help with nerve pain in my leg 89-90 not sure which year
Was not told a thing about it being a psych med thought it was a pain killer no info about psych side effects I went nuts had hallucinations. As I had a head injury and was diagnosed with a concussion in 85 I was sent to a head injury clinic in 1990 five years after the accident. I don't think they knew I had been on prozac I did not think it a big deal and never did finish the bottle of pills. I had tests of course lots of them. Was put into a pain clinic and given amitriptyline which stopped the withdrawal but had many side effects. But I could sleep something I had not done in a very long time the pain lessened. My mother got cancer in 94 they switched my meds to Zoloft to help deal with this pressure as I was her main care giver she died in 96. I stopped zoloft in 96 had withdrawal was put on paxil went nutty quit it ct put on resperidol quit it ct had withdrawal was put on Effexor... 2years later celexa was added 20mg then increased to 40mg huge personality change went wild. Did too fast taper off Celexa 05 as I felt unwell for a long time prior... quit Effexor 150mg ct 07 found ****** 8 months into withdrawal learned some things was banned from there in 08 have kept learning since. there is really not enough room here to put my history but I have a lot of opinions about a lot of things especially any of the drugs mentioned above.
One thing I would like to add here is this tidbit ALL OPIATES INCREASE SEROTONIN it is not a huge jump to being in chronic pain to being put on an ssri/snri and opiates will affect your antidepressants and your thinking.

As I do not update much I will put my quit date Nov. 17 2007 I quit Effexor cold turkey.

oh dear. I searched for dr.david healy which was dumb (too specific) and had a typo (no space after the period). thanks for doing it right.
