Asthenia: Weakness, muscle fatigue in legs, arms or body

Recommended Posts

Haven't seen this posted here yet. Every time I got on paxil or tapered too fast I get bad leg weakness in my thighs and biceps. Feel awkward walking and I never been off long enough to see when it goes away. I have been getting it again now at my low doses and am wondering what others went through if they had similar weakness. This is something that is so severe on startup effects that I can hardly walk. Its not like that now, but above my knees is sooo weak and really has not abated in a couple of mobths. Sometimes for a day or two its gone...

Paxil start September 2003 due to Fluoroquinolone adverse reaction that I wish doc. knew what it was. 10mg. most of the time with a few short runs of 20mg. FAST tapered 3 times and finally hit poop out or a reaction to nsaid's in Nov.2013. Started a 10% taper Jan. 2014 and have been ok until Sept 14 and went through a short hell. Now plodding through and looking for the light with unrelenting insomnia and pain, fog, loss of interests....
12/20/14 - .8mg.

1/01/15 - .75 mg.

1/15/15 - .42 mg. better sleep now, hope it continues...

2/11-15 - .25 mg. doing really good!! 2 weeks feel 85% of old me!

3/17/15 .14 mg. Knee pain bad!

4/07/15 .05 mg. this is so small now that I am estimating and just licking it off palm small as a "."

4/13/15 NOTHING !!!! Took my last little micro dose on 4/12/15.

I have alot of leg weakness as well as leg cramps and pain and burning. I was on Paxil as well. I recently reinstated 1.2 mg and my symptoms are worse. Not sure what to do now. Just thought I would let you know that it is like a WD symptom.

Didn't think it helped.2006 approx.-put on Paxil for mild anxiety 20 mg.2007 upped to 40 mg. not sure why.2011- tapered from 40 to 10. went nuts and went back to 20mg2014- tapered from 20mg to 0 from April to The end of June.current meds- Metformin(type 2 diabetic) and low dose aspirin.Take multi vitamin and vit b12, vit. D and magnesium. 5 months off Paxil. Still suffering.recently added 1.2mg of Paxil to alleviate withdrawals.(Nov 30)Dropped to .9mg because having symptoms from reinstatement.(dec 23)
taper to .76mg-.8mg (Feb 3) approx. weight .010 to about .008-.009 on scale.

I can't believe how weak they feel and my arms too. This is criminal that these drugs are even on the market. Hard for me to remember that windows come and I can feel better. Right now all I feel I'd W/D and its bad. I can't imagine that I can feel basically like I ct'd when I did a correct taper. Feeling like crap basically the whole way down.

I did basically ct. I tapered in 2 months. Went five months suffering. Then 3 wks ago I reinstated 1.2 mg and have had nausea and headache since so I dropped to . 9 mg today. I think the reinstatement is causing more issues than the WD. Ugh! Muscle weakness is part of my original wd and I still have it. I wish I could ct off the reinstatement but I too scared. I am on couch with a bucket today. It is horrid

I am working every day and its tough as hell. If I get through this one day I'm gonna throw a back to life party. I would love to know if my psoriatic arthritis would hurt so much if I wasn't in withdrawal. What's the bucket for, nausea?

Ya big time nausea. It started with the headache that I have had for weeks and now I have huge nausea and I am all flushed. Feel like crap. I am sure arthritis is made worse because of withdrawals.

You should try to keep plugging along because it hardly ever is a easy taper. It is never gonna be easy. I am absolutely determined to do this and bear these symptoms this time.

I was just going to make a post about weakness. Im 7months off and I am so weak. Walking around a mall feels like running a marathon. Im just recently off work and I remember 1 day of work feeling like I had worked a triple shift. Other than my stomach disturbances this has been my toughest WD symptom. I cant wait for the chronic fatigue to go away.

Was on 30mg (Lexapro) for 7-8yrs20mg for 3 months (This was my choice my Doc wanted me to drop much faster)15 mg 2week10mg 2 weeks 5 mg 1 week0 since August 24th . PPI Dexlant 30 mg taper has begun. Cutting 20% currently. using zantac as needed. Benzo is currently 0.10mg

I am just curious from the Vets on the site when they started to notice a difference in gaining energy? I am still so drained all the time, I have a good diet now and Im off work . I have just joined a gym as sports and exercise have been a long time passion of mine. I went as light as possible my first time but I got a headache and was extremely discouraged. I have a long history with headaches and this was one of my main reasons for going on the SSRI .. Well not my main reason but my GP's only idea of how to fix me. That worked for about 2 years than my headaches got even worse.

Hi Mort,

I started lex for headache too, pain (different type) on head, face, neck, shoulder and back developed when I was on regular dose all yrs and got lot worse since I started tapering. Recently I got new problems when I hit 3.2 mg with severe fatigue and weakness on my left side from head to toe, hard to type on the key board. My brain stopped functioning too most of the day only got better in evening. It's very scary as this put me to a much high level of disability allover.

Are you still able to hold a job?

Hi Reachingforstar,

I'm so sorry about the bad WD hit! I hope you are stabilizing soon from the recent dose up and down! It seems most ppl got harder time at lower doses and slow and tiny reduction with long hold is reported as the best way to handle,

Best,

Lex

Hi Mort81,

Thanks for responding!

I hope the symptoms improve over time for you. It is one of the worst and disabiling symptoms. Very heartbreaking consider we are still on the drug, and far away from being free from these poisons.

Hang in there and keep the good effort of moving!

Yes I too have the weakness thing. It does come and go. I kind of feel awkward when I walk, i have very tense muscles with cramps and twitching, I am also tired but then at this time of year I think a lot of people struggle with the dark grey days even when not in wdl. I have had major stomach issues but thankfully that seems to be settling, sleep is a problem and although I drift off I wake in the early hours and can't go back to sleep. This is a big problem right now as I work full time and I am up at 6 AM and feel shattered. I am tapering Lexapro and I am down to about 1.3 mgs. We just have to gently push forward, be kind to ourselves and truly believe it will get better.

Much love to my fellow sufferers

PN x

1995-1998 various SSRIs then withdrawal

2000 Sertraline

2003 Sertraline then changed to Prozac to attempt withdrawal.

2004 failed at withdrawal so Citalopram.

2010 attempted slow withdrawal over 12 months but failed- sever episode depression 2012

2012 3 days of Mirtazepine with bad reaction so started escitalopram 20mgs

2013 started very very slow taper with a number of slight reinstatements

Currently on between 0.5 and 1mg escitalopram drops at day.

This week I added a new word to my withdrawal vocabulary : ASTHENIA.

"debility; loss of strength and energy; weakness."

" Weakness. Lack of energy and strength. Loss of strength."

" Asthenia (Greek: ἀσθένεια, lit. lack of strength but also disease) is a medical term referring to a condition in which the body lacks or has lost strength either as a whole or in any of its parts"

"Have you ever felt like you lacked muscle strength and energy to get things done? If so, you may have experienced asthenia"

"Asthenia is the medical term for the condition known as weakness. It is defined as a psychopathological condition marked by extreme temporary loss or chronic loss of strength and is also marked by sleep disturbance, fatigue, and hyperesthesia. The physical weakness may affect the body as a whole or may affect only a part of the body. Asthenia leads to the inability to perform or finish a task although a certain task can be initiated except that there is difficulty due to a reduction or loss in the overall strength".

So many members have described this , I've definitely experienced it , I guess It shouldn't be

surprising that there's a medical word to describe it.

I've experienced muscle weakness on again/off again over the course of the last 14 months even while on SSRI/SNRI/'s.

I'd be interested if anyone else has experienced muscle weakness in legs...one of the most notable things that I've experienced while reducing Klonopin and when I had serotonin syndrome in November was my legs would "stop working" for a short period of time. They would get so weak I would collapse/fall on the floor, or I would shuffle around looking like I've got MS or Parkinsons. I thought this was behind me until 2 weeks ago. I'd been off the last psyc drug, Remeron, for 3 weeks when my legs again got really weak and would give out on me. They felt warm/hot like I had just run a marathon or something and also had stinging/shooting pain in my thighs and calf muscles. Unlike with Klonopin and/or when I was having serotonin syndrome, this seems to persist...I'm on week 3 of having the issue.

When it started this time, I had just started VSL#3, a high potency probiotic and my lactic acid was slightly elevated so the thought was that I might be experiencing lactic acidosis, but unfortunately the issue continues despite being off probiotics.

Hello person from Sydney! Have you melted yet? It was 38 degrees here yesterday. I am sorry you have experienced muscle weakness also. How does it affect you? It is just disgusting at how w/d affects every part of our body.

I experienced incredible weakness, in my back and legs and during stabilisation before starting a super slow taper, I couldn't walk to the front gate.

Over the next 4 years I experienced weakness, heaviness, loss of strength, slowness and lethargy constantly. I couldn't vacuum, mop or do bath and shower for the first few years. Cleaning the bathroom seemed a huge task, requiring a tremendous amount of effort and seemed to take forever. That same went for cleaning kitchen, etc. I only did one job per day. Stripping and re-making the bed was also a huge effort and seemed to take a long time.

In the 5th of year of tapering I realised I was doing these tasks without thinking, less effort and incredibly it only took me 10 minutes to do the bathroom! That still amazes me! I do the vaccuuming which I thought took me an hour, and only takes about 20 minutes!

There were days I could not walk at all, due to leg weakness.

I still have leg weakness, with tingling so not sure if that will go away or is permanent. Anyone else with this?

Last Sunday I could not walk...literally. Legs were so weak they kept buckling under me. I went to a pain clinic, he used an ultrasound and saw that my muscles were so tense they were restructing blood flow and compressing nerves. He used injections, a deep form of acupuncture to release the tension. I've had 7 days in a row without leg issues. Just a suggestion...

Yeah, this is a big one for me. I used to have powerful legs until this whole AD thing started in 03. It is when I started or was completely off these poisons that it would hit me. I figured that a slow taper would stop it but it did not. the leg weakness came on at 1 mg. and has been on and off since then. It is the worst thing for me in withdrawal. my thighs are where it really hits me and knees somewhat. At times I feel like I'm flexing my leg muscles unconsciously and then can relax them when I realize I'm doing it. just an awful feeling....

I think this is they key - it is cramping, spasms and tenseness, so massage helps. It can't do any harm. You can get massage thingo's and massage your own legs, or just use your hand. Heat pads and a warm bath would also be helpful.

This is a big one for me aswell but just like the rest of our Withdrawal symptoms it will have to take its course. I spoke with a lady not on this website yesterday who told me she spent the first year in bed , the second year in the house and than in year 3 started to be able to go for walks . 4th year started fully exercising and pushing herself with weights aswell. She is 4 years totally off all meds so no more WD issues. I was also very strong physically . Weights, Sports , Jogging the whole thing. I competed in lots of things . So if these drugs can knock me down than I am certain it can knock down anyone. It is mostly in the legs for some reason when I speak to others about it.

Yes, you can say that again! We go down to the river where it is flat (except for one very steep part, where hubby pushes me up!) and walk around there. Sometimes I can do it okay, other times it is SO HARD and there have been times I've got half way and cannot keep going. I really enjoyed yesterday's walk which was probably the best in a long time and it is so nice when you can actually enjoy it and not feel like you have one foot in the grave afterwards!

Found this searching under "leg weakness" as this & pins and needles has been my most troubling symptom. I've already been off a low dose for 2 1/2 months. How long did it take everyone else for improvement? Any advice?

Thank you!

Aug 15 - Aug 25 - Amitriptyline

Aug 26 - Sept 26 - Topamax

Sept 27 - Oct 4 Pamelor

Currently taking Alprazolam .25 at night to sleep (have only been since Jan. 7)

It would be good to know if this does improve! I am doing a super-slow taper and in my 5th year and still have weak legs. There have been times we have gone for a walk around the river where it is flat, and I just couldn't go on and hubby had to pick me up. On another ocassion we were coming home up a hill and I couldn't go on and wondered how on earth i could get home, but a neighbour came along and stopped and picked me up, I can't tell you how grateful I was!

I still have days when I can't walk, when I am super slow, etc. but I am seeing some days now where I can walk. I just hope I can pick up speed and walk faster in the future and regain my strength. I still believe it is muscle tension as I can feel the knots in my legs.

This has also been a big problem for me my legs appear to be smaller and the muscles Ive had naturally, without excerise, have atrophied. It's one of the top concerning issues that I been having to deal with. The biggest problem is the burning and stringing sensation I have when laying down to sleep. When I wake up little by little my legs would be weaker and more numb. The numbness now experience throughout my entire body it's scary and hard to come to terms with.

The thing that helped me more is excerise, the stringing, burn, and general discomfort is relieved. I started slow by standing up for an hour and than rest for 20-30mins. Than I walked, pacing, around my house for an hour on and off untill i was tired. I can walk fine but I wanted to start slow not more things worse. Than squatting 10 reps 3 set. This very helpful I now stand a lot more and try not to sit too much, squatting a little everyday, and walking, generally staying active.

I think its nerve damage maybe a doctor can understand more about what is going now. Anybody see someone and run some test to see what we can do?

Short Term Case: 7 pill of 10 mg of Modafinil in a 3 month span, but last 3 I took back to back causing severe withdrawals, lasting 3 weeks. Than 2 pills lexapro to help withdrawal lead to more withdrawal. I have most symptoms Pssd, emotional loss, cognitive issues, nerve damage in legs. Also 2 benzodiazepines. Not much to damage me long term...

Webhead, your symptoms sound exactly like mine. I am still not 100% sure mine is w/d, but it sure sounds like it when you come across others with similar issues. because I have had 3 or 4 disc prolapses and problems with sciatic nerve in the past, I can't be sure. I have to go to Dr. tomorrow for something else, so I might just mention it to him and see what he thinks. I did have a nerve conduction test many years ago which came back with some "loss of signal".

I think all we can do is walk as much as we can and exercise. The squats certainly help, as I couldn't bend at all and when I twisted my ankle the physio gave me an exercise to do with a ball against the wall squatting and holding and I have continued to do that, but I do know I have lost a lot of strength in my leg muscles and they ache a lot. What has got worse is the tingling and painful needle type prickling/stinging sensation and pain when I stretch my foot/big toes.

I'm really sorry to hear the pain your going through, I understand completely. The one thing that is help is the exercise, just about anything, but that is not going to shock your body. Start with standing for long periods of time would be my advice, than pacing. The nerve conduction test is concerning. What do you mean when you say "loss signal" does that mean the nerve is not responing? Maybe another test is in order to compared the two results.

I would like to say that I was very inactive with the symptoms were more manageable, before that I would pace at all hours of the day. I would stay in bed for long periods of time on and off for a year. The less active I am, the worse I become. I don't know if im improving or keeping the stringing and burning at bay, because even when I tried to be active the pain was still coming. Maybe the nerves are dull now? I wish i could understand what was going on... Maybe I should go to a doctor and run some test. Any recommendations?

I'm wondering has anyone every recover the muscle mass they lost after lossing it from withdrawals? Does your body return through some process of some kind?

my body regularly increases and reduces my muscle mass. some days im shriveled and weakened and a few days or weeks later i can be accidently breaking things around the house and feeling like i dont fit as well through hallways. so, my muscle-building abilities have been less compromised during this withdrawal period, but when i do gain muscle, it tends to be catabolized in my sleep when i hit another wave of particular symptoms.

losing fatty tissues and regaining muscle mass has not been a problem for me when my body is allowed to do it. i require no special exercising to do either, and can actually become more fit and sculpted sitting on my ass during a good period than id have been any time on drugs--they stunted my growth, including my physical maturing with regards to muscle mass and tissue ratios and even bone structure. this all seems to be slowly healing, though in a very stuttering fashion.

from 2005-2012, i spent 7 years taking 17 different psychotropic medications covering several classes. i would be taking 3-7 medications at a time, and 6 out of the 17 medications listed below were maxed or overmaxed in clinical dosage before i moved on to trying the next unhelpful cocktail.

antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs, NDRIs, tetracyclics): zoloft, wellbutrin, effexor, lexapro, prozac, cymbalta, remeron
antipsychotics (atypical): abilify, zyprexa, risperdal, geodon
sleep aids (benzos, off-label antidepressants & antipsychotics, hypnotics): seroquel, temazepam, trazodone, ambien
anxiolytics: buspar
anticonvulsants: topamax

i tapered off all psychotropics from late 2011 through early 2013, one by one. since quitting, ive been cycling through severe, disabling withdrawal symptoms spanning the gamut of the serious, less serious, and rather worrisome side effects of these assorted medications. previous cross-tapering and medication or dosage changes had also caused undiagnosed withdrawal symptoms.

I never thought about doing this on purpose, as standing in one place for too long is impossible. You have given me an idea to put the timer on and just stand there when watching tv for say 5 mins and do it until I can and then gradually extend the time! I was able to achieve bending this way as I couldn't bend and hold at all, but a physio put me onto an exercise with a ball up against the wall, bending and holding to the count of 5 and then 10 and now I can hold for count of 30.

The nerve conduction test is concerning. What do you mean when you say "loss signal" does that mean the nerve is not responing? Maybe another test is in order to compared the two results.

I really don't know what they meant by "signal loss" - I suspect it means some loss of nerve functioning. I might think about doing another test in the future to compare, but not until I am through with w/d and stronger. Also, that test is painful, a bit like an electric shock!

. Maybe I should go to a doctor and run some test. Any recommendations?

Have you decided to do this?

I'm wondering has anyone every recover the muscle mass they lost after lossing it from withdrawals? Does your body return through some process of some kind?

GOOD QUESTION! Do our muscles re-cuperate? do we re-gain our strength? Do nerves repair????
