Pug, hope you are doing better! Thinking of you!

Zoloft 100 mg. daily for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome since Oct. 1994 / Synthroid 88 mcg. daily / Supplements: Neptune Krill Oil-1,000 mg. twice daily/Astaxanthin 10 mg. twice daily/Ubiquinol 100 mg. twice daily (These 3 have allowed me to discontinue (approved by doctor) bp meds I was on. Calcium Citrate 500 mg. daily/Vitamin D3 2,400 iu daily/K2 (MK7) 100 mcg daily (osteopenia and fam. hist. of severe osteoporosis). Stress B Complex (1/2 dose)/Quercetin (for allergies/asthma)/Magnesium (400 mg. oral glycinate and about 50 mg. magnesium chloride spray oil a day, divided throughout day).

Tapered Zoloft about 6 wks. Totally off since the end of July (25-29, 2014). 3 wks. vertigo at end of taper, then 3-4 wks. OK, followed by withdrawal symptoms increasing in severity (nausea, gastric disturbances, loss of appetite, insomnia, restlessness, jitters, anxiety, agitation--jumping out of my skin--possible akathisia?) Seem to have paradoxical reactions to everything new, even Vitamin C. Severity of akathisia comes and goes, but is constant to some degree. Hard to leave house, and cannot be home alone. (Retired)

Thank you everyone. Very tough. Lost all hope.

January 2012 - Prescribed 900mg gabapentin and 30mg Norco for lower lumber spinal stenosis pain.

September 2013 - Spinal fusion surgery, 6 levels. Hospital ramped up meds 1500mg gabapentin, 100mg Norco, 80mg Oxycontin, 25mg Fentanyl patch.

January 2014 - Sever nausea daily and with back pain every 4 hours. 2 trips to ER. First endoscopy found ulcer. Treated with Sucralfate and PPI. Second endo in May found no ulcers. Doctors said it was the opiates causing the nausea. CT'd Oxycontin, Fentanyl patch.

July 2014 - Lost 48 lbs. due to not eating because of severe nausea. GP prescribed Prozac 20mg and Ativan 2mg prn. Tried for 4 days, quit. Two week followup GP said keep taking Prozac. 4 days, quit again. Ativan taken rarely prn for anxiety and appetite.

August 2014 - Went to detox. Off opiates. Still nauseous, helmet head, drugged feeling. Doctor CT'd gabapentin. Ended up in ER. Found 2 gallstones. Gabapentin reinstated at 900mg. Tried botched up and down taper to get off Gabapentin. No tapering advice from doctor. Said to just CT again.

September 2014 - Coded on table during gallbladder surgery. Developed liver biloma due to CPR by doctor. Had bile bulb inserted for 2 wks to drain.

October 2014 - Gallbladder removed. Still nauseous, 3am cortisol surging, drugged helmet head, vertigo, breathlessness, whooshing head, heart palps.

November 8th, 2014 - CT'd gabapentin suggested by family and 4 different doctors. Was told no withdrawal is associated with gabapentin. Have been in hell ever since. No windows, just one big tsunami every day with same symptoms for 4 months.

December 26, 2014 - Found SA. At least I know I'm not insane. My family thinks I'm doing this to myself. Akathesia has become unbearable.

March 10, 2015 - In absolute daily hell with no relief. Currently taking magnesium 200mg before bedtime.

Pug, why do you say your family cannot take it anymore? Has anyone said that?

2009: Cancer hospital said I had adjustment disorder because I thought they were doing it wrong. Their headshrinker prescribed Effexor, and my life set on a new course. I didn't know what was ahead, like a passenger on Disneyland's Matterhorn, smiling and waving as it climbs...clink, clink, clink.

2010: Post surgical accidental Effexor discontinuation by nurses, masked by intravenous Dilaudid. (The car is balanced at the top of the track.) I get home, pop a Vicodin, and ...

Whooosh...down, down, down, down, down...goes the trajectory of my life, up goes my mood and tendency to think everything is a good idea.
2012: After the bipolar jig was up, now a walking bag of unrelated symptoms, I went crazy on Daytrana (the Ritalin skin patch by Noven), because ADHD was a perfect fit for a bag of unrelated symptoms. I was prescribed Effexor for the nervousness of it, and things got neurological. An EEG showed enough activity to warrant an epilepsy diagnosis rather than non-epileptic ("psychogenic") seizures.

:o 2013-2014: Quit everything and got worse. I probably went through DAWS: dopamine agonist withdrawal syndrome. I drank to not feel, but I felt a lot: dread, fear, regret, grief: an utter sense of total loss of everything worth breathing about, for almost two years.

I was not suicidal but I wanted to be dead, at least dead to the experience of my own brain and body.

2015: I  began to recover after adding virgin coconut oil and organic grass-fed fed butter to a cup of instant coffee in the morning.

I did it hoping for mental acuity and better memory. After ten days of that, I was much better, mood-wise. Approximately neutral.

And, I experienced drowsiness. I could sleep. Not exactly happy, I did 30 days on Wellbutrin, because it had done me no harm in the past.

I don't have the DAWS mood or state of mind. It never feel like doing anything if it means standing up.

In fact, I don't especially like moving. I'm a brain with a beanbag body.

I just found this page, full of people who also experienced Gabapentin h#ll. No answers there, just a lot of grief. But you are not alone.

I had no idea Gabapentin could do this. I did see a shrink (only once) who told me it had no side effects and I could take as much or as little as I wanted for sleep! I can't even remember what happened. I was all mixed up in other WD at the time. I don't even recall her name. (She missed our next appointment, and I felt I had wasted $450 on the initial consult.)

Have you given more thought to what Alto said about reinstating a small dose?

Pug,  I did a search for withdrawal recovery and found this  :

Gabapentin Withdrawal Duration: How long does it last?

The withdrawal process affects everyone differently, so there is no exact science to say that withdrawal will take a specific amount of time. For some people the process will take a few weeks, for others the effects will linger for months. Many individuals that have withdrawn say that it took them over a year to fully recover once they took their last dose. Give your body and mind time to heal – after all, these medications have a significant impact on your brain chemistry when taken over an extended period of time.

Recognize that the most important thing you can do during any sort of withdrawal is to take good care of yourself. Make sure you are eating healthy foods, getting exercise, and allowing your body to

make a full recovery.

You WILL go on to recover, Pug.  Right now your brain is telling you things that aren't true.  Every day you get through this is one day less of the suffering and one day closer to getting your life back.  That's what you have to cling onto because THAT is the TRUTH.  You CAN and WILL recover from this.  Keep telling yourself that over and over.  Write it down.  Tape it to the walls.  Have it on your computer desktop to look at all day and all night.  This DOES have an end.   So many people here love you and are praying for you and are holding you close in their hearts.    Hang on.  xoxoxo

((((crying)))) you lovely people! Oh God please help me out of this hell. I just can't breathe. I'm pacing with the akathisia 24/7. How can I have gotten so much worse? I have a Dr appt on Monday to see about reinstating and tapering. This was the Dr who told me you can just stop taking it but he's a different Dr in the practice.

(((((((hug for pug)))))))

I hope you have some relief soon

1983-1995: On and off several tricyclic ADs
1995: Quit alcohol, started Prozac
2003: Stopped Prozac; 2004: Started Effexor XR 225
2014: Tried and failed three rapid tapers; stopped cold turkey March 11, 2014, eight days of Prozac as a bridge.
March 19, 2014: SSRI/SSNI free; four weeks acute withdrawal, then five month window of minimal symptoms.

Sept 2014-June 2015: Delayed, prolonged severe withdrawal from Effexor. Roller coaster, way up and way down.  Symptoms swing widely. Clear improvement in Mar-Apr, but still much hell. In May symptoms shifted to insomnia and depression, less HA, tinnitus and brain fog.

July-Sept 2015: After two weeks of using CES device, tremendous relief of insomnia, depression and other symptoms. Feeling much better, finally! Symptoms still come and go, good and bad days.Sneaking up on return to good health.  Alto gave me a 'Here Comes the Sun'!!!  ☼

Oct 2015-Feb 2016: Difficult several months, some good days but the bad days felt like I'm moving backwards.  Struggling after steady improvement, but hanging tough.

Current supplements:  Mg-Threonate; glutathione; krill oil; borage oil; phosphatidyl choline; multivite, vit B12, vit C, vit D vit E; OTC meds pseudoephedrine in the AM and benadryl at bedtime.  Clonidine 0.2 bid for high blood pressure.

Filled with hope, courage and self-appreciation.

Monday seems like a long way off, but you already have Thursday under your belt.

Pug, dont reinstate. Keep going. By most of people there is a break through point at ca 8-9 months. You have to hold it until. If you reinstate then you have to go the whole journey down once more. I am keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Pug has been suicidally miserable, and has to do something to get out of it. Might be a drug, might be something else. She cold turkeyed, which is the hardest way to go. Many people are helped by a small reinstatement, and I am glad Pug is going to discuss this with a doctor. We cannot give outright medical advice on this site; we are not doctors and we have not examined the patient. None of us has all the answers. This one is for Pug to decide.

Ugh. Having had extreme pain and extreme nausea, it is hard to say which is worse.

Your posts suggest that you are at your wits' end, and you were about to try something that might actually work. I was relieved to hear this.

Now something has happened that made you think only about the possible negatives, leaving you in the same hell you have been posting about for months.

I have saved my sanity by going back in Wellbutrin, and it was a very hard decision, especially with so many people being against it and saying so in my thread. If I had listened to them, I would still be miserable.

I am not suggesting you try Wellbutrin, nor that if you did it would relieve your withdrawal symptoms. I was a polydrugged mess, and your case is different.

I hope you reconsider and in the meanwhile, do some research on people who have tried RI for Gabapentin WD.

It also seems strange that you feel the same whether on or off Gabapentin. Is it possible that your opiate withdrawal is part of the big picture here? The doc had you CT Gabapentin right after you got off the opiates...it could be a situation where both withdrawals are the problem. I don't know much about long-term opiate withdrawal but I know a lot of people suffer greatly and end up using again.

Are you on any other meds at this time, besides Magnesium supplements? Questions like that are actually for a doctor to ask, not me. This is why I think you need to see a doctor. Maybe a new doctor. Not necessarily to get a prescription, but possibly to get some advice that this site cannot offer.

Pug, I don't have any advice on whether to reinstate. Only you can decide that. I was told when I first came on this site the best thing was to make a decision and stick with it. I do believe, though, whatever you decide, you can and will get through this. ((Hugs))

Too sick to write a post.

Hi Pug,

I woke up this morning (its morning here) thinking about you.  I was wondering why you didn't want to try reinstating.  I remember reading that you said you can't.  So I thought I would ask.  But now, after reading through the recent posts on your thread, I understand.

So I did a little research and found out that you were on a high dose of Gabapentin, its not surprising it made you feel so ill.  Its also not surprising you are having such bad withdrawal from it.  Did you know it comes in 100mg capsules?  I was thinking, perhaps you could try reinstating just half of a 100mg capsule,  that may be enough to take the edge off your withdrawal symptoms, without causing the nausea.  If the nausea came back, you could stop taking it right away.  If not, and it helped a little, or at least didn't make you feel worse, then perhaps you could go up a little more..... until you got some good relief.  Then, you could hold for a while and taper slowly from that small amount.

This is just a suggestion and it might not work, but if I was in your situation, I would try it..... and thank you for doing your signature, it makes it easier to understand your history.

Here's our gabapentin thread:   http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/2309-tips-for-tapering-neurontin-gabapentin/

I'm not a doctor.  My comments are not medical advise. These are my opinions based on my own experience and what I've learned. Please discuss your situation with a medical practitioner who has knowledge of tapering and withdrawal...if you are lucky enough to find one.

My Introduction Thread

Short acute withdrawal, followed by 2 -3 months of improvement then delayed protracted withdrawal

DX ADHD followed by several years of stimulants and other drugs trying to manage increasing symptoms
