I'll send you a PM.

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks.  The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Final Dose 0.016mg.     Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017

Erer, I have had all sorts of scary thoughts that I perceived to be real and I was convinced they were really going to happen, but they didn't. They felt so real though. For example - I was convinced I would get into an accident and break my neck. I even began researching spinal chord injuries and stuff like that. It was as real to me as the air that I'm breathing. And I had hundreds of thoughts like that every single day. None of them came true. It's NORMAL in withdrawal. Don't let them scare you, distract, don't feed them and don't believe them. Ignore them.

I suffer from depression, anxiety, pure-o ocd, and panic attacks since 2004. Been on multiple different psychiatric drugs since 2006. Never had a significant WD problem before, only brain zaps for a month and then I'd be fine...............Been on Cipralex (escitalopram) 15 mg and Fluanxol (flupentixol) 1 mg since Sep 2014. Stopped taking the Cipralex after a fast 20-day taper.Took the last 5 mg Cipralex on Feb 5th, 2015. Then took Seroxat (paroxetine) 10 mg for a week, and stopped it too. Severe WD started suddenly on Feb 16th. RI 5 mg Cipralex on Feb 18th, 2015. RI worked and was relatively stable for a while................April 7 - decreased Fluanxol from 1 mg to 0.5 mg and took it at this dose for a week. - BIG MISTAKE; April 13 - WD starts creeping in; April 14 - RI full dose of Fluanxol 1 mg => severe muscle twitching and jerking when trying to relax and fall asleep, overwhelming sense of doom, dread, terror, and horror, insomnia, hoping to stabilize.
Tried doing a 10% cut off Fluanxol in the end of May for a few days, but quickly updosed to full dose because the twitching returned.
Experiencing waves and windows in the following months.
Unsuccessful brief taper attempt of Fluanxol by 5% on November 1st. Symptoms hit the next day. Too scared to continue tapering, reinstate full dose.
Severe crash in November after stupidly trying a barbiturate on November 9th. Grave mistake. Sense of unshakable inescapable internal torture, like my soul is in hell being tortured, terror/horror/dread/doom (probably akathisia?) that gets especially bad when trying to relax and fall asleep, muscles twitch, jerk and move on their own, shaking, insomnia, can't eat, confusion, disorientation, brain not working normally. Never felt so bad in my entire life. Never experiment with other meds while in WD! Praying to God I stabilize and get back to my baseline.
December - things getting even worse.

January - unbearable suffering

  • 2,5 years of slowly tapering down Cymbalta from 60 mg. Then tried going from 8,44 mg to 1 mg in 8 days. (April 1st 2015). That's when the real hell started. Reinstated. Didn't help. I was added Ativan (2 mg 2 times a day for relentless akathisia that started with jumping Cymbalta). For years had been taking Zopitin 7,5 mg and Stilnox 10 mg for I had not been able to sleep naturally since the 1st day I started Cymbalta). Used to take Xanax occasionally.
  • All of the above were stopped cold turkey when I was hospitalized in the beginning of May 2015.
  • Prior to that I have been on and off the whole spectrum of different AD-s for 15 years (since I was 17).

Fear. Fear. Fear.

Cortisol in the morning. Strong abstract fear that comes over me and suffocates me any time during the day. Fear from my thoughts that something might happen. Fear all the time!

For several days now uncontrollable crying spells that last for hours, such deep sadness and depression so thick you could cut it with a knife. So very horrible.

---

I don't know what to make of it. Recently my symptoms have kept changing. It is not that I have all days similar symptoms of akathisia for example. It seems to be that there was akathisia at the beginning of the last 4 weeks, then there was a week when fear was most dominant in different forms, then there is sadness and depression etc etc, but not all together.

I wonder whether it is a bad sign that my nervous system is just very messed up, or is it a good sign that there is something changing, searching for its place and I'm not stuck on one horrible symptom that is static.

  • 2 weeks later...

I am out of my mind scared. I have changed nothing, but suddenly such load of fear has come back. For a while I used to not have strong fear in the mornings even. Even though I had the scary thoughts that prevented me from even leaving the house for a while. But those got a lot smaller. Yesterday the surges of fear started and today has been out of my mind scary.

I woke up in fear and when I tried pushing through it - going to yoga and hairdressers I had several small panic attacks, all the time felt like doom was coming - like I could just have a major (and I mean the really terrible one that I've had that lasts and lasts and is so strong...) one could be coming over me.

I have walked around all day petrified.

I need this to go away! I cannot live like this. Why oh why did this come back? I am so scared.

Thank you for the reference. I have read it. I just have a hard time accepting that after what I thought was a slight improvement (and only a slight one at that, not even a window) suddenly the symptoms just hit me so hard again.

I am in so much distress I cannot believe this can ever pass.

It's chemical fear. You are in no real danger.

Feels so real...

It also makes me wonder whether it is actually me not the wd - perhaps I am faulty and could be doing something better to help myself, perhaps I am just foolishly waiting for it to pass when instead I should be doing... something. Anything.

I read from some thread that you "should try and socialise", that being good for recovery.

I just don't see how that could be possible in a state where I either have debilitating depression where I try to go minute by minute just surviving literally or I am petrified out of my mind wanting to just run and hide. A lot of the time I am in a confused foggy state and/or derealization trying to somehow navigate my way through space not tumbling over that all I can do is lie on the couch and going to the toilet is a challenge. There are times when I cry and cry in despair for days. When akathisia kicks in I am twisting and turning in bed in despair etc etc etc. Don't want to think about it all even.

When days pass like that it just makes me wonder whether I'll ever get to a point where I am able to socialise again. It has already been 5 months since they made me stop Cymbalta. I feel like I should be feeling some improvements by now.

For this is a sort of a journal I thought I might write down my list of symptoms I am experiencing for future reference to myself to see if something has improved.

Here we go.

- Akathisia

Arguably the most severe symptom I’ve had. Now that I’ve experienced it a lot I can tell from experience that there are very many levels of severity to this symptom that is generally characterised by inner and motor restlessness. The worst I’ve ever experienced it drove me to my suicide attempt. This was to me completely unbearable (although I put up a fight for a considerable amount of time) and I have later had it at that strength too and I would probably have attempted again if not for people staying with me for the purpose of me not harming myself.

I have experienced a lot of akathisia later on and have thus been on very different levels of distress. The akathisia at this point ranges from tolerable discomfort in the body to writhing on the couch in agony - but still able to tolerate it somehow.

My akathisia comes and goes. It is not constant. In a way it is scary that way, but I am thankful that I don’t have it 24/7.

- Nausea and inability to eat

When I experience nausea in the morning, that’s when I know something is up with my WD. When I attempted to reduce olanzapine I got such bad nausea in the mornings and during the day I was completely unable to eat. I ate in the evenings when the nausea let up.

Nausea is the first sign that worse is about to come. I took some vitamin B about a week ago and that same evening had mild nausea. Next morning nausea was severe and the same day it was followed by a whole day of panic. In my mind it must have been the B-vit, but nausea was what gave away that something was wrong.

- Derealisation

The feeling that the surrounding is not real, is somehow strange, twisted, I cannot see well, everything is confusing and I feel like I almost don’t know where I am.  Everything around me is weird and surreal. A very scary symptom especially when lasting for a long time. In that state I feel like I could not handle any problem that might arise - I am not even sure whether I can walk straight etc.

- Panic attacks

As I have said there are panic attacks and then there are PANIC ATTACKS. The kinds I experienced fresh off Cymbalta were truly indescribable. So I won’t. I still get panicky and I have experienced an occasional panic attack but they are nothing comparable to the sheer terror I experienced freshly off Cymbalta.

- Morning cortisol surges

Waking up in terrible surges of terrible chemical fear early in the morning. I get that less now. But it lasted for 4-5 months at least.

- Feeling of abstract fear

and

- Feelings of extreme sadness

I put these two together because I experience them sort of closely. Every morning to me starts with feeling either very scared or very sad or both together. The fear and sadness are debilitatingly strong. There is no “try and go for a walk” when feeling such strong emotions. They usually last for hours and hours into the day. I do try and do things while feeling like that but it is extremely hard for I do feel like a 5-year-old left alone and sad and scared.

- Excessive crying

Sometimes for hours straight. Sometimes hysterically. Sometimes I start crying in the morning and force myself to do the things I intended to do so while tears keep falling and I go washing, eating, leave the house with tears running down my cheeks, and drive the car the same way...

- Intrusive scary thoughts

This is one of the most bothering symptoms I have right now but I don’t want to write a lot about it so I won’t trigger myself. I get intrusive thoughts of all the bad things that can happen and I cannot shake them - I am afraid to drive my car, because of accidents, I imagine all kinds of scenarios to horrible thing that can happen to a person (me and my partner) during their lifetime - accidents, diseases, horrible life circumstances etc. These thoughts, when they come, just will not let go and are truly scary and torturous.

- Fear of leaving the house

For a week or so I was completely afraid of even leaving my house. Partly due to the scary thoughts, partly due to the confusion and other symptoms and partly due to the feeling of perhaps having a panic attack every second.

- Severe depression

It is strange. When other feelings are stronger - fear, sadness etc., the depression does not get a grip on me. It seems it comes and takes over when some other extreme symptom is let off.

The kind of depressive spells I get are also indescribable. I literally feel there is no way of bearing that for another second. Yet I have to keep suffering for another second, minute, hour. Needless to say the suicidal thoughts come very easily in that state. This is torture in every living second.

- Cognitive problems

Sometimes it is really ridiculous how I am not able to read or concentrate. I forget things I never used to forget. Yesterday I put on an old coat that is so worn I shouldn't wear it and discovered it once I was out on the street.

- Feeling extremely cold (+twitching throat muscles)

I have noticed that my thermoregulation is a mess in WD. I am constantly extremely cold even when it is not that cold outside or around me. When it gets really bad I start shaking and my throat muscles start twitching (this happens in the grocery store for example, they have some very cold isles).

- Dizziness, brain fog, confusion

Companions that can appear every day.

- Brain zaps

These electric shock like zaps in the brain I don’t currently have, but had for a long time after coming off Cymbalta and also when messing with Olansapine. So this is a sign of acute withdrawal for me.

I read about the windows and waves pattern of recovery, but I don’t think I experience it. Or maybe I haven’t just had a window yet. For me it is just one symptom replaced by another and then the old ones coming back in a circle.

My introduction.

Tapering:

  • Olanzapine (starting point 2,1 mg): Jan 2016  /---/ April 2018 0 mg. (From 2,1 mg to 0 mg in 1y 3mo).
  • Diazepam (starting at 5 mg) : switching to liquid May 2018;  4,6 mg (June 2018) /---/ 0 mg (Feb 2020) (From 10 to 5 - nobody knows, from 5 to 0 in 1 y 10 mo)
  • Valdoxan (starting at 25 mg): switching to liquid (Feb 2019) /---/ 0 mg (July 2020)

So to summarise: currently I am mostly experiencing fear in many different forms: I am afraid of going out (but I force myself as much as possible), of driving a car, of all the bad things that can happen, of going places. I experience just abstract fear that won't let go, I experience strong feelings of intense fear in the mornings and during the 1st half of the day, I am afraid of going out to eat because of the panic attacks I have experienced etc. I am a giant ball of fear.

Oh erer, you're going through so much. Just hold on, hold on. It's hell, but it won't be always like this.

Thank you for the supportive words. I know you are suffering just as badly, but you always seem to have encouraging words for others. You are very kind.

  • 2 weeks later...

2 weeks ago - I think I had my first windowish period that lasted 6 days. It felt easier to breathe. I had hope. The world seemed easier and lighter somehow. I still had lots of symptoms, but something was different, like a weight had been lifted somewhat from my shoulders.

Then the window shut so tightly not even a beam of hope is coming through. In a big wave and feeling hopeless.

Could somebody offer me a few words of encouragement?

I have hit a very low point - the symptoms are very severe and I am barely hanging on and even though I have read a lot about WD by now thoughts come to my mind that make me doubt everything. It feels like this is never going to pass and I begin to doubt that maybe it is all me and not the withdrawal. Perhaps it is “anxiety” like the doctors in the hospital tried to convince me. Perhaps this torture will never pass...

Having panic attacks again for the last few days and severe fear all of the time. I get very nasty derealisation and right now I am just shaking with - fear?! or just who knows why. I am constantly nauseous and I have to fight hopelessness and SI as well as obsessive fearful thoughts about all the bad things that can happen in life.

Also I was wondering, if anybody reads this - is there a good success story you can recommend to me? I don’t really read a lot of other people’s threads and I am scared that if I just start to read from the section randomly it is too much for me and I am afraid of stumbling upon a lot of stories that don’t really constitute as successes. But I really need something encouraging at this point.

Hi erer ,   scroll up and read your post from 23 October.    You write about a 6 day window of relief from

the intensity of your symptoms.

They're worse just now , but they will settle again . . . it's a matter of time.

This low episode will pass , and your job is to sit it out and stay safe.

Sept. 2012 -decreased 90mg in 6months. Care taken over by Dr Lucire in March 2013 , decreased last 30mg at 2mg per week over 3 months. July 21 , 2013- last dose of Cymbalta

Protracted withdrawal syndrome kicked in badly Jan.2014 Unrelenting akathisia until May 2014. Voluntary hosp. admission. Cocktail of Seroquel, Ativan and mirtazapine and I was well enough to go home after 14 days. Stopped all hosp. meds in next few months.

July 2014 felt v.depressed - couldn't stop crying. Started pristiq 50mg. Felt improvement within days and continued to improve, so stayed on 50mg for 8 months.

Began taper 28 Feb. 2015. Pristiq 50mg down to 45mg. Had one month of w/d symptoms. Started CES therapy in March. No w/d symptoms down to 30mg.

October 2015 , taking 25mg Pristiq. Capsules compounded with slow-release additive.

Hi erer-- it's very hard when a window closes and you're thrown back into the thick of it.  But it does show that things are improving, and although it is bad at the moment it will get better.  Try to relax into it and not let the symptoms panic you.

((((((((((((((((((HUGS))))))))))))))))))

I got into reading "success stories" today and this and another thing got me very upset. It was very triggering for me to read HOW long it takes people to actually recover even partially and not even entirely. I just cannot imagine living in this hell for... years. :(

I started ta topic in the "tapering" forum but just in case someone drops by here and has any information, I will post my question here too:

As I am taking a medication not many people have experience with, there is no topic about tapering it. I am not at a stage to start tapering Valdoxan, but I constantly worry, that once I wish to start, there is no information or support available for me to take guidance from.

I am asking if anyone has any piece of information on how one would go about tapering Valdoxan, please be so kind and post here. Or if you know of anybody who has already done it or if you have stumbled upon any information anywhere else in the Web. Perhaps by the time I am ready to taper these pieces of information will have formed a good plan.

Background

  • The Valdoxan pill has a coating so I am worried what will happen, if I break it. It has no line for breaking either.
  • Also I have no idea if it would be ok to make it into a liquid. I would like to do a liquid taper, if possible, because I see no other way to do it accurately.
  • It is said to have an effect on the melatonin system and the pharmaceutical company claims it has no WD. I know better not to believe that but could it still be a bit of a good sign that they have not had acute WD problems in their short term studies? Or am I too naive to hope that?

Also, does anyone have any information (I could not find) what the polymer coating on Valdoxan pills is used for. I know the coating can serve many purpouses (easier to swallow, protect from acidity in the stomach, be recognizable etc).

"Most enteric coatings work by presenting a surface that is stable at the highly acidic pH found in the stomach, but breaks down rapidly at a less acidic (relatively more basic) pH. For example, they will not dissolve in the gastric acids of the stomach (pH ~3), but they will in the alkaline (pH 7-9) environment present in the small intestine."

Could it be Valdoxan also has a coating that is supposed to make it dissolve in small intestine?! How to taper then?

Could it be Valdoxan also has a coating that is supposed to make it dissolve in small intestine?! How to taper then?

So I thought as I posted the question here and someone might read it from here, I will post an update:

Turns out that most likely the coating on Valdoxan pills is not time release.

I also tried diluting it in water and if I broke the pill in half it diluted completely in under 10 minutes (constantly stirring).

My introduction.

Good idea to start a thread in Tapering.

About socializing . . . seems to me you're really working to push yourself to do things outside of the

house , and that's probably enough for now.  You'll know when you're better enough to want to mix

with people.

Fingers crossed the next window comes trotting along soon.

Hi erer

My Fluanxol pill also has some sort of coating which I think is just regular coating because if it is time-release, I think they are obliged to write that on the pill bottle and packaging. Mine also dissolves in water. I think you should be fine if you prepare your solution like it is generally recommended, I think Valdoxan is just like a regular pill. When you start to taper, are you going to taper the AD first?

Thank you. I really wish there was someone else taking Valdoxan who could share their experiences with me.

Thanks! I really am pushing myself, but to tell you the truth there are not many things I am able to do outside the house.

When you start to taper, are you going to taper the AD first?

In my hopes of becoming able to taper I imagine I would taper the antipsychotic first for I believe it is the most damaging for my brain.

Yes, I agree. I think the same way and will try to taper the AP first.
