☼ dan998: Cold turkey, reinstatement and tapering citalopram

Another wobbly day. Some anxious thoughts, but no panic attack. I had a better night's sleep which has made me feel much calmer today. Not a perfect sleep. I woke early, but was able to drift back into blissful unconsciousness by focusing my attention on the birds singing in the tree outside my window. I suppose its a type of meditation. Although, it does not always work and their tweeting can also become an unbearable cacophony that keeps me awake.

Something else I've noticed is that my waves are always accompanied by an earworm. An annoying piece of music that incessantly plays over and over in my head. When the wave finishes so does the earworm. Oh well, probably not important, just another weird thing that happens in withdrawal.

This wave I am in at the moment is starting to become very concerning. It’s not as bad as some previous ones, but it is lasting much longer than my waves usually do. I’m usually done with a wave within a week, but this one has, so far, lasted 3 weeks. It is mostly insomnia and anxiety, although there has also been a feelings of despair, hopelessness and, a couple of times, there has been some SI.

I’m worried that because I rushed the last part of my taper I have essentially Ct’d off of 1mg. If this is the case should I reinstate at, say 0.3mg, and redo the last part of my taper again? I really don’t like this idea, but if things don’t resolve soon I might have to seriously consider this.

Is getting hit with a big wave usual after finishing the taper? Is this something that was going to happen anyway? This is all new territory to me. I’ve gone off the drugs a few times before and two months is the longest I’ve ever made it. Is there a mental barrier at this point and all I need to do is to hold my nerve and wait for this wave to pass on its own accord?

Another thought is that I’m having a lot of external stressors at the moment and this could be triggering the wave. The hot weather, which affects at lot of people in WD. Noise pollution because of the hot weather and having to keep the windows open. I’m very sensitive to noise. It could also be stress caused by the fact that I’m going to have to move house again, because my friend who I was sharing with has moved out, which means that I’m now struggling to pay the rent. I also no longer have any emotional support as I am now living on my own.

Maybe it’s a perfect storm, caused by a combination of all of the above. Rushing to the finish, the two month barrier and external stress. I don’t know what to do. Like I said, I really don’t like the idea of admitting defeat and reinstating again, but I don’t seem to have too many options left.

Would it be worth trying some sleep meds? I still have some from a couple of years ago. Maybe I could break the vicious circle of anxiety causing insomnia which in turn causes even more anxiety and insomnia?

Any thoughts and advice would be most welcome.

Hi Dan

So sorry to hear you are having a bad time of it. It's a rotten position to be in not knowing what to do for the best.

Is this wave worse than any you have experienced late in your taper? If so maybe it shows you have come off too soon.

Did you feel OK in yourself when you stopped at .1mg?

I don't have any experience of tapering to such a low dose but from what I have seen some folk on here are not stopping until they have reached a tiny fraction of .1mg and then it still takes a while to stabilise.

I know you are keen to be off the Cit but if you have to reinstate you are not admitting defeat just being sensible and limiting the damage so you can get off completely without too many symptoms.

You do have a lot of stressors which can't be helping.  What sort of sleep meds did you have in mind? From my experience adding anything into the mix can make things so much worse.

I am sorry I am not able to steer you in the right direction but am thinking of you. Hopefully someone with more experience will be able to offer you some advice soon.

Best wishes

Hi Flowers,

I had very little trouble getting down from 1mg. In fact, it was surprisingly easy. Had a few waves, but they only lasted a day at most. This one isn't particularly bad, it's just that it has stuck around for far too long and the lack of sleep is really getting to me.

Yeah, I'm a bit worried about throwing sleep meds into the mix too. I only suggested it as they did really help me before and got me through a rough patch. I'll see how it goes. If I'm wide awake at bedtime then will probably try half a tab of Zopiclone.

I think citalopram is having a last ditch attempt at keeping its hooks in me and that if I can get through this unpleasantness I will be free from it forever, or at least until the next wave hits.

Hi Dan

How did last night go? Any sleep? I have had insomnia in WD and it is awful.

I guess it is going to take a while for the brain to adjust after stopping Cit.  If only we could feel normal straight away but everything has to get back to working without the drug no matter how small the dose.

Hello Flowers,

I didn't need to take any sleep meds. I fell asleep in my armchair. It was that narcoleptic-type sleep you get where one minute you are wide awake, the next you are fast asleep. No yawning or tiredness. Like a switch flips in your head and you're out for the count.

Apparently, I slept through a massive thunderstorm. Didn't hear a thing. I got a few hours sleep. Had a horrible nightmare about being in a car crash. Then went to bed to get a few more hours sleep, along with some more nightmares. I think I got about 6 hours sleep, which is the longest I've had in a while.

Feeling a lot less anxious today. The knot in my stomach isn't as tight as it was. Instead, I've had a tingly headache all morning and feel very lethargic. I'm going to just take it easy today and try no to fret too much about the shitstorm of stress that is going on at the moment.

I'm thinking how wonderful it will be when the last wave finishes, being symptom free, putting this dreadful experience behind me and getting on with the rest of my life. I've wasted a lot of years and have a lot of catching up to do.

Dan, please remember that people who have never taken a psych medication go through waves -- occasional nights of oversleeping or not sleeping, low mood, low energy, weird aches and pains.

For some people tapering or post-taper, a 3-week wave is a short wave.  You may simply be transitioning through a new pattern of symptoms until you return to shorter waves and longer windows.

This is not medical advice. Discuss any decisions about your medical care with a knowledgeable medical practitioner.

You make a good point there. I hadn't even thought of ordinary people suffering from waves. Framing it in that way actually makes it a lot easier to rationalise. What I'm probably dealing with are normal human emotions. I will just have to learn to get used to them again after many years of having them blunted by SSRIs.

What I find most unfair is how WD seems to amplify only the negative emotions and leave the positive ones switched off until the very end of the recovery process.

There must be better days ahead for all of us. I'm looking forward to becoming a human again. I suppose we just have to persevere and wait for our brains to eventually repair themselves.

Great news Dan!  So sleep came naturally even through a thunderstorm.  Lets hope this is a new pattern for you.

I hope so too Flowers. I figured out early in withdrawal that sleep is the key to recovery. That is why I get so panicky when the insomnia comes along.

I had some relief from the wave for a few hours yesterday evening. Had a burst of energy, not the manic kind, but good energy. Felt a bit more positive about things and got some household chores done.

This was followed by another night of lousy sleep that was fragmented with scary nightmares and vivid dreams. Usually dreaming gives me a break from WD, I had one last night where the symptoms crossed over into the unconscious mind. More processing going on.

Wouldn't it be great to be able to have a brain transplant and then download our memories into the new brain, and bypass all this nastiness.

Had some more of that positive energy today. I went for a run. Well, I say run, it was more like a long walk interspersed with some gentle jogging.

I tried running earlier on in WD and it was a disaster. I had trouble breathing and thought I was having an asthma attack. This time it seemed natural and I actually did a lot better than expected.

Hoping that getting some exercise will negate some of the anxiety caused by having the flight or fight hormones being triggered and not being acted upon. I think I read somewhere that they build up and only get broken down by different hormones released by physical exertion.

I reckon that getting fit could be an effective coping strategy for me. Will just have to be careful not to overdo it.

Hi Dan

Good that you felt a little better yesterday evening. Although upsetting don't be disheartened by your nightmares and restless sleep. Think of the night before when you slept fairly well.

I think there would be a massive queue from all of us here if there was ever such a thing as a brain transplant!

I am with you on the importance of exercise in dealing with this bad energy. I try to manage a walk every day and it does help I think get rid of some of the cortisol. How fast it is depends on whether I am in a wave or window!  When in a wave I feel much better after getting out rather than just sitting at home.  Not only is it the endorphines being released I think it is the fresh air and distractions of whatever is happening around me.

I think maybe buillding up to a good run is better than just jumping in at the deep end and going for it. I think we have both suffered from overdoing exercise in the past!

Good to hear you are doing a little bit better.

I've been doing walking everyday for the last couple of years. It definitely helps to get outside everyday. I got a bit obsessed with it though and found I had to walk huge distances to get any benefit from it anymore. So taking up running just seems to be the naural progression. Who knows where it will lead. Could be running the marathon next year.

Endorphins, yes that was the word I was looking for. You need endorphins to break up the stress hormones.

I didn't realise you were such an avid walker Dan. So yes, I agree, running is the next step. How great that would be if you were to run a marathon - a real achievement after all this stuff!

I didn't know endorphins broke up stress hormones.  That would explain why I feel so good when in a window. I have more energy so am much more active with exercise which is obviously making me feel even better.

Yeah, i walk about 10k most days. I have a lovely route along the seafront. The sea has a very calming effect. If it's a nice day I'll have a bit of a sunbathe on the beach to get my vitamin D.

A marathon might be too optimistic, but the local half marathon is in March, which could be something to aim for.

That's a long way Dan but it must be so lovely for you being by the sea. I am by the sea too and agree the sea is very soothing even when the waves are crashing up the shoreline!

I have many happy memories of living by the Solent in UK and the lovely beaches/seafronts/fish and chips!  Took our dog for his daily walk to the beach every morning no matter the weather!

Yes, maybe aim for the half marathon as March is not far away and you don't want to overtax yourself. It might be just what you need to see you through this bad patch.

I've been on a nostalgia trip today and have been looking at old photos and listening to music from the 80s. I was hoping to remember some positive emotions. Instead, I provoked an emotion I haven't felt for years. I cant really classify what the exact emotion was. It was that feeling I would get when, as a child, I would be sent to my room for being naughty. A mixture of shame, frustration, injustice, boredom and loneliness. A really raw emotion that now refuses to go away and, hours later, I'm still remembering all the times I've felt this way. Perhaps this a type of therapy?

Didn't go for a run today. My muscles are quite sore and I decided they needed a couple of days to recover. I was expecting my legs to hurt, and they do, but whats really weird is the little muscles between my ribs are really sore too. Not painful, just that dull ache you get after exercising.

Hi Dan

I don't know what to say regarding the way you are feeling. I know I can't cope with delving into the past when I am feeling rough. I just need to keep emotions on an even footing.

I guess it is good that you are feeling things but a shame it is not the good feelings you were hoping for.

I think body aches are part of WD so it may not all be down to your excercise. My hands hurt a lot sometimes for no reason so can't put it down to anything else other than good old WD!

Maybe a gentle walk out today may  help clear your head.

It can be hard to know what's WD and what's not. You read a lot on here about aches and pains. I suppose it makes sense that a malfunctioning nervous system is going to produce random pains.

I had a good sleep last night and am feeling a lot better today, both mentally and physically. A bit of a headache and my knees are still a bit sore, but at least the chest pains have gone. I think they were caused by all the expanding and contracting. Got a bit concerned for a while as I know that chest pain can be a symptom of panic attacks. So much nicer to have a real and identifiable cause for pain.

Hopefully, will get a nice window now as I've got a lot of important things that need sorting out.

It sounds like you have worked out what has been causing your aches AND you had a good nights sleep. I always feel better in the morning if I have slept well.

I think sleeping well is a good sign that this will lead to a nice window for you. Fingers crossed for you Dan!

Hi Dan-- congratulations on making the big jump to "0".  I can understand how it can feel like a let down, as not a whole lot changes when it happens.  I really wish more people would stick around after making the jump, just so we could learn about how the post taper period works.  Your experiences are sounding pretty typical though.  It won't take the 10 or 20 years that you're imagining it might.  The changes in the next year will amaze you.

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks.  The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Final Dose 0.016mg.     Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017

I noticed that about people not sticking around post-taper too. There are lots of newbies and those who are tapering. There are even a few success stories, but there are very few people in transition. I will definitely try to stick around and help fill in some of the blanks. I wonder what happens to those who drop off the radar? I hope their disappointment doesn't make them go back on the drugs.

The jump to zero has been a massive anticlimax. I expected too much. But, I think this post-tapering period is going to be a very important stage in the recovery process. The past 2 years of tapering has mostly been about managing withdrawal so that the symptoms didn't become overwhelming. This next bit is when my brain gets used to functioning without being contaminated by citalopram.

Hope you're right about the next year being amazing. I'm expecting there will be plenty of work ahead though; learning new coping strategies, finding new ways to fill my time and rediscovering the "me" that got lost all those years ago. Sorta feels like I get a second chance at life.

Hey Dan,

Just browsing your thread, congrats on getting to 0. And thanks for sticking around to tell us about the other side! So few people do.

I think what you're saying about the work ahead is really true - tapering is only one part of the process, the rebuilding and relearning is even more important. And we kind of do get a second chance at life. Most people just get carried along in life's tide with only a few moments where they might stop and take stock and really choose ... withdrawal forces us to do that, and living our medicated selves for so long makes us appreciate when the fog clears.

Even if it hurts!!

I think Brassmonkey and Rhiannon both wrote about the 'awakening' of self and emotion they experienced when tapering, and how important giving themselves time to adjust was in their recovery. I can feel that for myself. I've had no withdrawal symptoms really, thus far, but my life sure has sped up as I get my zest back. I'm more in danger of unbalancing myself by taking too much on and not being gentle with myself because I don't know how to handle feeling excited about life and opportunities now! It's like I've been asleep. If I falter now it won't be withdrawal - it will be poor judgement! I need to sleep and eat well and remember the fundamentals!!

And I do think being 'numbed' to whatever extent we were on the pills (though I can certainly remember plenty of negative emotion, just felt like I was in quicksand) means we need to relearn a 'healthy' or resilient approach to feeling bad. It's not the end of the world. But where we've been, it almost was, so we kind of have PTSD? You mentioned having flashbacks of feeling really bad in withdrawal. I know that feeling.

My friends/loved ones often say "you're so brave, you've been through so much, you always ask for help etc etc" and I just think, no I'm really not. If I get an inkling of that bleak, anxious depression, I'll be begging doctors to pill me up. I really fear feeling that level of fear, you know? Some people just have never felt like that. They don't know what it's like. So it's natural that we panic when we feel edgy, anxious, a bit blue, a bit flat... our body is begging us not to go there again!! But I think we really need to learn to manage those emotions, and that means not trying to make them go away, but realising we can feel that way and still be okay...(it's sort of a buddhist thing I'm working on.) And of course, arranging our lives so that we have friends, sleep and good food, something to focus on that we enjoy, some sort of meaning/religion/belief that works for us...the hard stuff. But the stuff of life.

I've hijacked your thread with this ... eek. Someone's chatty this morning. Hope you're having a good day, and keep fighting the good fight. You've got a whole self to discover!

I've been giving this some thought and have come to the conclusion that its not an awakening, well not yet anyway, Its more like a discovery. A discovery of the enormous amounts of determination, endurance, resiliance and willpower that I didn't even know I had. I feel that withdrawal has equipped me with the skills necessary to tackle any of the the challenges and hardships that life invariably throws at us. At any time during the last 2 years I could have said that this is too difficult, it cant be done or its not worth the effort. At any point I could have eased my suffering and gone back to full dose and stayed on the meds for ever. But, I didnt, I kept putting one foot in front of the other and had faith that the outcome was worth all the suffering. I will take this lesson with me throughout my life now; I can accomplish anything I set my mind to, as long as I believe the reward is worth the effort.

That's great that you're getting some your energy and joie de vivre back. It is also great that you understand the need to take things easy and give yourself plenty of rest, because symptoms can creep up on you and give you a big slap around the face when you least expect it. I found getting below 5mg particularly difficult.

Yes, I do think withdrawal is certainly traumatic enough to make us suffer from PTSD. There's only so many times you can stare into the abyss, and I've certainly stared into it more times than I care to count, before the abyss stares back at you. So many times where I got far to close to the edge. It was only my strength of will that pulled me through the darkest times. I also feel that the ordeal of withdrawal will actually make us stronger people. I doubt anything will ever be as bad as the absolute terror of a 4am cortisol surge or the panic attack that lasts for 24/7 and goes on for weeks and weeks. Nope, I'm pretty sure that once I'm recovered there will be very little that will frighten me ever again.

Your description of being in mental quicksand is very accurate. Yep, it felt like that for me too, 15 years of struggling through the quicksand. Glad its nearly over.

Dan-- your recent posts make me so excited for your future.  I have always said that once a person has made it through WD/Recovery they will have no need to be afraid of doing anything ever again.  We have been through some of the worst life has to throw at us and survived.  We have had to face every aspect of our life, watch as it's been burned away and rebuild on the solid pieces that were left standing.  Now we can face life on our terms, knowing that we will be capable of doing what ever is necessary to make it our own and knowing what is really important and what is not.

You're making me very proud Dan.

Tom

I really feel that this experience gives us a whole different perspective that only fellow survivors could ever understand.

My Brain feels much calmer. The ruminations and racing thoughts are noticeably less intense. Usually my brain is so busy and often spirals into worry and anxiety. It’s been remarkably quiet in there this week. I have actually been able to sit in silence and just listen to background noises without being irritated. Usually I have to drown them out with the television or radio. I have even been able to tolerate the tinnitus. I sat there and listened to it and was at peace with it. Accepting its existence, but not letting it dominate my consciousness.

I’m putting this all down to going running. A lucky discovery really. I only started doing it because I was in a wave and had mild akathisia and had an overwhelming desire to run. I’ve really been getting into it and have run every day this week. It has been a real effort to get out there most days. It would be all too easy not to bother because it’s too hard, but like I said in an earlier post; I have discovered buckets of determination I never realised I had and I say to myself, “It’s just an hour of discomfort. Nothing compared to the years of withdrawal that I have already endured.” So far, it has been totally worth the effort. It gets easier every time I go and am now able to run 5k without stopping. This is something that I will definitely carry on with post-withdrawal.

However, its not all good, these short bouts of enthusiasm and energy are often followed by extreme lethargy and tiredness. I suppose that’s the trade-off. There’s always a price to pay.

I just remembered another unexpected benefit from going running; it has returned my digestive system to near normal after many months of being really sluggish, nauseous and bloated. I think it's all the wobbling up and down of my stomach that has loosened everything up.

I'm not sure if it's the cortisol or because I'm sleeping better. I also read that running is a form of meditation. The repetitive motion and having to concentrate on breathing gives little opportunity for the brain to ruminate. I have tried normal meditation a few times in the past, but was never successful and gave up on it due to my hyperacusis and being easily distracted.

I've had a cold so haven't been out for a few days. Not a withdrawal cold. A proper cold with mucus, phlegm and a sore throat. Its makes a nice change to have a real illness. A mild inconvenience that I know will only take a week or so to recover from, instead of the seemingly endless suffering that I have become accustomed to.

This is the first time I've had anything like this since all this withdrawal stuff started. Nothing, not even a sniffle or a sneeze. Makes me wonder if WD somehow puts the immune system into overdrive?

Despite having the lurgy am still in a window :)

Well whatever it is, if the running is helping that can only be good!

Sorry you have been poorly. I have often thought when really suffering badly in a wave if only I could trade this for a normal illness (like a cold) where I know I will get better!

Glad you are still in a window. Me too! :D

Been feeling a bit rough today due to the cold. I suppose that is to be expected. Have got a nasty cough and am congested with all sorts of nastiness. Pleasantly surprised that this has not precipitated a wave. I always dreaded getting physically ill on top of withdrawal, but it is nowhere near as bad as I imagined. Anyway, decided to take it easy and just lounge about on the sofa until I feel better.
