Ode to Alto Strata: Surviving antidepressants (and psychiatric drugs in general)

When people ask me where they should go for support and advice when coming off psychiatric medications I always refer them to Surviving Antidepressants, a site that not only gives grounded and safe information about withdrawing from SSRIs, but also supports people in coming off any and all psychiatric medications.

The site is run by Alto Strata who has often shared the articles she’s written for the withdrawal board’s members with Beyond Meds. These articles make for a very fine collection on withdrawal with very many of the most important issues underscored in very accessible terms.

Those of us who’ve spent hundreds of hours with thousands of people coming off drugs still have the most reliable information available for the time being. This is an instance in which “peers” simply have more information than anyone else. Not only have we lived it but we’ve watched many others do the same. Alto Strata has been doing this for many years and has amassed a knowledge base that is truly impressive.

Alto Strata also became a dear and valued friend and there was a phase of recovery, once I could again speak on the phone, that without her help I cannot imagine having made it. I am profoundly grateful to Alto Strata who not only helped me as a friend and peer but who has helped thousands of others. She is very much-loved on her withdrawal board. She is one of the many warriors in this “business” who has worked 1000s of hours for little or no compensation. Most of us go unthanked and often unrecognized.

Today I wanted to thank Alto Strata publicly for all the great work she’s done and continues to do. Without people like Alto Strata many folks would simply not get the help they need to free themselves from these drugs. A lot of people find themselves in situations and environments where other help is simply not available. For those folks Surviving Antidepressants and other boards like it are literally life lines.

Alto’s withdrawal board is one of the best I’ve encountered in all the years I’ve been involved in this work.

Here are a collection of her articles and work on Beyond Meds:

If you or someone you know needs a place to learn safer withdrawal methods for all psychiatric drugs the website is here: Surviving Antidepressants

I’ve not kept up with other boards in the last several years. Often different boards have different cultures so it’s worth shopping around and finding one or more you are comfortable with. I share some info on finding support in general here: Online support in withdrawal

*it is potentially dangerous to come off medications without careful planning. Please be sure to be well-educated before undertaking any sort of discontinuation of medications. Do not assume your MD will know how to do it either. They are generally not trained in discontinuation and may not know how to recognize withdrawal issues. A lot of withdrawal issues are misdiagnosed to be psychiatric problems This is why it’s good to educate oneself and find a doctor who is willing to learn with you. See: Psychiatric drug withdrawal and protracted withdrawal syndrome round-up

Well deserved kudos.

What happened and how I arrived here: http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/4243-cymbaltawithdrawal5600-introduction/#entry50878

July 2016 I have decided to leave my story here at SA unfinished. I have left my contact information in my profile for anyone who wishes to talk to me. I have a posting history spanning nearly 4 years and 3000+ posts all over the site.

Thank you to all who participated in my recovery. I'll miss talking to you but know that I'll be cheering you on from the sidelines, suffering and rejoicing with you in spirit, as you go on in your journey.

Totally agree.   I will be on a site talking about WD and starting thinking that Alto needs to see this.  Then when I start reading the comments, I see she has already visited.  :)    She is simply amazing.

:) much gratitude for your work

2000 - sertraline for job anxiety low confidence (17 years old) ..which turned the next 16 years into nightmare!

On/off sertraline severe withdrawals every time. 2014 - felt better as reduced dose of sertraline no more inner restlessness. Doctor rushed off again. Hit severe withdrawal. Lost the little I had in life. Couldn't get stable again on 12.5mg. Was switched to prozac. Had severe reaction to prozac..came off in November 2015 at 6mg as felt more confused and damaged on it..Even more withdrawal ..rage, depression, dyphoria, near constant suicidal ideation, self harm impulses, doom, concrete block in head, unable to do much of anything with this feeling in head..went back on 6mg of sertraline to see if would alleviate anything. It didn't..reduced from December to June 2016 came off at 2.5mg sertraline as was hospitalised for the severe rage, suicidal impulses, and put on 50mg lofepramine which in 2nd week reduced all symptoms but gave insomnia which still have..psych stopped lofepramine cold turkey..no increased withdrawal symptoms new symptoms from lofepramine except persistant insomnia which has as side effect.

Taking Ativan for 8 months for the severe rage self harm impulses 1-3 times a week (mostly 2 times a week) at .5mg. Two months (I'm unsure exactly when the interdose started to happen) ago interdose withdrawal seemed to happen..2 days I think after the Ativan.

Nightmare that could have been avoided!

Thank you Alto and all the staff at SA, this site is a lifeline to many of us!

2005-2009, Lexapro 10 - 20 mg, CT WD w/severe depression and anxiety:  2010-2015, Paxil, 30 - 40 mg, tapered off at 10 mg/week, moderate anxiety and depression:  2010-2015, Clonozapam 0.25 mg, as needed for anxiety and sleep:  1/10/2015, Zoloft 25 mg, tried to increase to 50 and 75, but nausea and dizziness:  2/13/2015, Paxil 5 mg, added back after 2 weeks at zero to reduce WD:  2/28/2015, Paxil 10 mg, increased from 5 mg to reduce WD, HOLDING:  3/04/2015, Zoloft discontinued (reduced to ~12.5 mg on 2/19, ~6.25 mg on 2/26, then zero):  4/26/2015, Paxil starting 10% taper (no scale so was inadvertently at 20% taper, yikes!):  4/30/2015, Paxil 10 mg, reinstated (WD disappeared between August 2015 and May 2016)

5/02/2016, Started 10% taper, reinstated to 10 mg on 5/11/16:  4/29/2017, Last dose of Paxil (working with holistic psychiatrist, lots of supplements to aid WD):  Primary symptoms: apathy, demotivation, anhedonia, fatigue, stress intolerance, moderate social anxiety

7/1/2018 Finally feeling like myself again, success!!! Praise God! Even with the stress of relocating recently, I am feeling pretty good most of the time now. Granted, I eat healthy, I exercise, I don't drink caffeine or alcohol and I try hard find a healthy balance of quiet and social times. Hang in there and keep the faith, you can do it too!

I found her posts all over the internet too that always makes me smile :)

I have been reading her posts and trying to understand her words since 2008 I thought about this for a bit of time and suspected I would have more to say then THANK YOU ALTO! these words are the best so far. :)

WARNING THIS WILL BE LONG
Had a car accident in 85
Codeine was the pain med when I was release from hosp continuous use till 89
Given PROZAC by a specialist to help with nerve pain in my leg 89-90 not sure which year
Was not told a thing about it being a psych med thought it was a pain killer no info about psych side effects I went nuts had hallucinations. As I had a head injury and was diagnosed with a concussion in 85 I was sent to a head injury clinic in 1990 five years after the accident. I don't think they knew I had been on prozac I did not think it a big deal and never did finish the bottle of pills. I had tests of course lots of them. Was put into a pain clinic and given amitriptyline which stopped the withdrawal but had many side effects. But I could sleep something I had not done in a very long time the pain lessened. My mother got cancer in 94 they switched my meds to Zoloft to help deal with this pressure as I was her main care giver she died in 96. I stopped zoloft in 96 had withdrawal was put on paxil went nutty quit it ct put on resperidol quit it ct had withdrawal was put on Effexor... 2years later celexa was added 20mg then increased to 40mg huge personality change went wild. Did too fast taper off Celexa 05 as I felt unwell for a long time prior... quit Effexor 150mg ct 07 found ****** 8 months into withdrawal learned some things was banned from there in 08 have kept learning since. there is really not enough room here to put my history but I have a lot of opinions about a lot of things especially any of the drugs mentioned above.
One thing I would like to add here is this tidbit ALL OPIATES INCREASE SEROTONIN it is not a huge jump to being in chronic pain to being put on an ssri/snri and opiates will affect your antidepressants and your thinking.

As I do not update much I will put my quit date Nov. 17 2007 I quit Effexor cold turkey.

the video of alto speaking at the occupy protest had me in absolute tears. what a show of strength! i am so thankful for all of her efforts. this site, and all who frequent it, provide a rare support net for a syndrome that is so often inflicted, and nearly never addressed in its aftermath, by the pharmaceutical/medical establishment.

thank you, alto! we find this beacon of hope and strength when we are at absolute rock-bottom, or plummeting to it rather quickly. and we find the tools and support we need to slowly and cautiously lift ourselves, and one another, upward.

kudos!

2016: 0,98 to 0,22 mg; 2015: 2,35 to 1,01 mg; 2014: 4,9 to 2,5 mg; 2013: 9,1 to 5,1 mg; 2012: 15,7 to 9,7 mg; 2011: Started on 25 mg - then 50 mg- dropped to 25- to 12.5 mg - back to 25 mg - after 18.75 mg started tiny tapering to 16.6 mg

Started on 25 mg Zoloft in March 2011 due to stressrelated tinnitus that gave me panicattacks. Had a terrible reaction to Zoloft from start, but was told to "hold on". After four months I was stuck. Therefore the long taper. Crazy, I know... Super sensitive to drops and have dropped by 4-6 % from the previous dose.

Wow thanks for this post.

Thank you to GiaK and Alto for the tremendous work you both do.

We have until the 14th. Feb 2018.

URGENT REQUEST Please consider submitting  for the petition on Prescribed Drug Dependence and Withdrawal currently awaiting its third consideration at the Scottish Parliament. You don't even have to be from Scotland. By clicking on the link below you can read some of the previous submissions but be warned many of them are quite harrowing.

http://www.parliament.scot/GettingInvolved/Petitions/PE01651

Please tell them about your problems taking and withdrawing from antidepressants and/or benzos.

Send by email to petitions@parliament.scot and quote PE01651 in the subject heading. Keep to a maximum of 3 sides of A4 and you can't name for legal reasons any doctor you have consulted. Tell them if you wish to remain anonymous. We need the numbers to help convince the committee members we are not isolated cases. You have until mid February. Thank you

None of the published articles shed light on what ssri's ... actually do or what their hazards might be. Healy 2013.

This is so true, with anything you get on these drugs, dependance, tapering, withdrawal symptoms, side effects, just silent. And if there is something mentioned then their is a serious disconnect between what is said and reality!

Over two decades later, the number of antidepressant prescriptions a year is slightly more than the number of people in the Western world. Most (nine out of 10) prescriptions are for patients who faced difficulties on stopping, equating to about a tenth of the population. These patients are often advised to continue treatment because their difficulties indicate they need ongoing treatment, just as a person with diabetes needs insulin. Healy 2015

I used to think there was no way I was going to be able to continue my beloved stone sculpture and other sculpture.  I had been so sick for so long and wanted death more than art or life, (art is life to me but anyway...).  I started looking around the web and found this website and started reading the posts.  it's been about 2 years of back and forth with conventional psychiatric medicine practitioners trying to convince me that I'm really in need of their services and drugs for my "chemical imbalance."  I recently said "no thanks" to their plan for me.

I'm still on some meds because, as we all know, you can't just quit once you've started.  I'm diligent about my taper now.  The rest of my health has become a top priority because it is all inextricably linked.  MY OPTIMISM and HOPE that, yes, there will be more art and, no, I don't have to suffer is due, in large part, to this website.  No one else around me is speaking up.  So I'm going to take this spark of knowledge that Alto has spread and see to it that I share it with as many people who will listen!

A deep and heartfelt thank you, Alto  :)

1998: Diagnosed Bipolar 1

9/15/15:  abilify 3 mg, down from 10 mg. started the reduction in 5/15. On Effexor 150 mg down from 300mg. in that time, my psychiatrist wanted me to try Latuda, which I tried then quit after 5 days. Then there was the Rexulti .5 mg for 3 days. I quit that, too.

11/4/15: increased abilify from 3mg to 4mg at behest of docs because I was feeling extremely detached + volatile + moods vascillating wildly

3/19/16: 3mg abilify, 150 mg effexor -12beads.

9/13/17 - 1st day off of venlafaxine in ~ 12 yrs

 10/4/17 : 2 mg abilify

Supplements:  Magnesium Citrate ~300mg

Thank you so much, Alto, and all of the mods and admins. Your hard work is very much appreciated.  smileys-thanks-771216.gif

Great post GiaK!

I am deeply grateful to Alto Strata; she and the staff here are helping lives and mine.

THANK YOU

About 20 year history on and off SSRIs, beginning with Prozac 20mg (?)

then Lexapro (from which I unwittingly did a traumatic and disastrous cold turkey)

then last 14 years on Paxil 20mg, then 10mg, with unsuccessful attempts at cessation

Finally successfully tapered from 20mg to 0 over the last year. Last dose was on 12/11/2015.

I was also prescribed Clonazepam concomitantly for anxiety, to take as needed. I took about 0.125mg to 0.5mg, 0 to twice weekly (?). Stopped taking altogether beginning April 2016.

Overall my recollection of this timeline is scattered - lots of life and doctor changes, moves, poor record keeping on my part, and my memory has not been the best lately, but I am noticing improvements.

Also took antihistamines and decongestants for years for chronic allergies, all of which I also stopped Dec 2015.

Currently taking fish oil, pro-biotics, Vit. D for deficiency, and Magnesium (but only occasionally).

End of April 2016 started taking Trader Joe's "Calming Sleep Formula" which seemed to help; it is L-Theanine 200mg, 5-HTP 30mg, and Melatonin 3mg - but I read 5-HTP affects serotonin, so I am going to stop that also, and try only Melatonin instead.

12/2015---just holding, holding, holding, with trileptal/oxcarb at 75 mg. 1/2 tab at hs.  My last psycho med ever!  Tapered @ 10% every 4 weeks, sometimes 2 weeks to

2016 Dec 16 medication free!!

Longer signature post here, with current supplements.

Herb and alcohol free since 5/15/2016.  And.....I quit smoking 11/2021. Lapsed.  Redo of quit smoking 9/28/2022.  Can you say Hallelujah?(took me long enough)💜

Thank you Alto!!!!! We will all get through this!!!!

On zoloft since 2000 for OCD/anxiety. Tapered off from 150mg to 100, 50, 25 over Dec/Jan 2015. After month n half off, began depression. Being terrified, as I never had depression before, after a few days, went back to 50mg, then five days later to 100mg. Now stable. I will stop this medication, with time and perseverance...my current taper level and timing are as follows, which includes No other Rx's, No alcohol, NEVER any illicit drugs:

84mg from October 2016

82mg from February 2017

79mg from April 2017

77mg from June 2017

75mg from July 2017

Bumping to say thank you to Alto too.  I kept meaning to post this but never got to it...On the old site once a long time ago Alto you told me everything would be okay, I can't recall what I had posted that led to you saying that, but I so desperately wanted someone to say it to me and no one I knew offline would reassure me it would be.  It made a tremendous difference and often when things were hard again I would recall you saying this and feel more hopeful.  And you were right!  Now I'm so much better!

The amount of good you have done in the world must be immeasurable!  And what a tremendous role model you are too!  I hope you know how deeply you are appreciated.

Better go now getting teary...can someone pass a hankerchief?

My suggestions are not medical advice, you are in charge of your own medical choices.

A lifetime of being prescribed antidepressants that caused problems (30 years in total). At age 35 flipped to "bipolar," but was not diagnosed for 5 years. Started my journey in Midwest United States. Crossed the Pacific for love and hope; currently living in Australia.   CT Seroquel 25 mg some time in 2013.   Tapered Reboxetine 4 mg Oct 2013 to Sept 2014 = GONE (3 years on Reboxetine).     Tapered Lithium 900 to 475 MG (alternating with the SNRI) Jan 2014 - Nov 2014, tapered Lithium 475 mg Jan 2015 -  Feb 2016 = GONE (10 years  on Lithium).  Many mistakes in dry cutting dosages were made.

The tedious thread (my intro):  JanCarol ☼ Reboxetine first, then Lithium

The happy thread (my success story):  JanCarol - Undiagnosed  Off all bipolar drugs
