Hibari: tapering Remeron and want to start tapering Lamictal

Hi @Hibari

To answer your question, I think both. After I'd reinstated too high, things did improve after a couple of months noticeably and also when things had gone very pear-shaped! Everybody is different of course and it isn't a hard and fast rule but I think it indicates that things will get better with time if you can hold your dose, be patient and avoid more trouble. I wasn't stable after a couple of months holding but greatly improved.

I'm taking the prescribed liquid mirtazapine by Rosemont and I feel lucky as it's very straightforward to taper.

How are you doing?

Thanks for your response.

I'm really struggling right now. Getting some small bits of sleep wirh the Mirtazapine but not much more than that.  I feel pretty discouraged about being on this medication and it's not doing much for men

I've been pre-planning my taper and getting as much information as I can so I'm ready when I start.

9/2013-4/2014:  After moms death, was prescribed a series of meds for short periods of time that didn't work. Zoloft, Lexapro,  Nortriptyline, Liquid Prozac, Cymbalta.

1/2014-9/2014. Clonzapam: Given Lamictal, stopped Clonzapam at .125mgs

1/2015-4 2017 Remeron: 41.25 -0.025mgs

7/2015-11/2018 Lamictal: 200mgs-0.05 mgs Had paradoxical reaction to Lamictal wd, broke my heart to take a benzo but wasn't sleeping.

3/28/2019 -2/5/ 2021  Clonazapam: 0.625mgs-.00115 Med Free

July 27th, 2022**Severe Setback due to surgery/ anesthesia.

9/7/22-10/4/22 Trazadone 50-100mgs for sleep, 10/13/22-11/13/22 Trazadone 1 mg to stabilize

10/4/22-11/20/22 Remeron 7.5mgs (for sleep doesn't work) 11/20/22 7.3 - 12/31/22 6.3

I could use some guidance.

I've been taking Mirtazapine for about 8.5 weeks. It has not worked very well for sleep and now seems to be paradoxical.  When I take it at night, I get restless and hyper. There is alao lots of burning skin and flushing about 15 mins after I take it.

I'm wondering if I am having an adverse reaction to the medication.

I have started to taper it and will keep moving forward as I can.

My question is, would it be better to move the Mirtazapine to the  daytime since it is not working for sleep?

Or would it be better to pick up the tapering pace due to the paradoxical effect at this time?

My healing from the setback is moving incrementally forward but still has been hard.

Thank you for any responses.

I realize that SA is quite busy so I wanted to lift the load and say I no longer need guidance.

I was able to make a decision regarding my Mirtazapine taper.

Really feeling this cut. Lots of depression, tears and the usual insomnia.  I will be holding until I am stable again.

I feel far from the goal of getting off this medication again. It's a strange feeling to know I will move forward while still feeling such doubts and fears.

I wanted to give an update. It's been 7+ months from my surgery/ anesthesia setback. I was in acute for 3 months and experienced more intense symptoms than in any of my prior tapers including symptoms I never had before. After 3 months symptoms started to drop off slowly with the biggest one, anhedonia, lifting at 6.5 months. It was a very rough and emotionally scary experience.

I'm now at 4.8mgs of Mirt from my original dose of 7.5mgs. I went on it  on after losing my sleep due to the medications used in the anesthesia. It did not work for me so I started tapering it after 7 weeks.

I'm doing a dry cut taper with a nail file and scale, which is the same way I did my benzo taper.

Once I got into the 5s, the Mirt started to help me sleep after doing the opposite at the higher doses. I do feel pretty sedated in the morning along with nausea and head pressure. I also cry a lot when the cuts hit and I remember that from the first time I tapered from Mirt. Overall though, things are generally better as I move down on the dose.

I usually taper between 6-7% per month. I cut twice a month and hold for about 14 days. I've just tried a 5% cut this month to see if I can handle it for one of my cuts. Now that I have healed more from my surgery setback, I was willing to try. We shall see how it goes and I'm willing to hold longer if I need to.

I wanted to post this because I feared daily that I would not heal from my setback but I have gotten much better. I now just have to get through this Mirtazapine taper.

I hope everyone who is tapering is hanging in there and doing the best they can. That in itself is more than enough.

Thank you @Rosetta

I too glad to be recovering from the setback. I never would have expected to be back on SA tapering again but for many complex reasons I am.

I haven't been on SA too much so I'm not caught up with how you are doing.  How are you feeling these days?  I will pop over to your thread and see what you have been posting.

I appreciate your support.

Hi,

Another update.

I continue to feel better as I get lower on my Remeron/Mirtazapine dose. I am currently at 3.4mgs down from 7.5mgs.

I am able to exercise, work and my mood is good. I feel 90% healed from the surgery and anesthesia setback, which caused me to be put back on Mirtazapine after losing my ability to sleep. Remaining symptoms are sedation and low grade nausea in the morning along with about a 10-12lb weight gain. I know that will go away once I am off because it happened last time.

I also wanted to post a link to this interview of Dr. Mark Horowitz on his experience coming of Lexapro and his current work on psychiatric med withdrawal. You have the option of either listening or reading the interview.   Hibari

I wanted to share that I have been off of Mirt for 19 days. I stepped off at 0.2mgs. I dry cut using a scale, an excellent pill cutter and metal nail file to shave down my pills. I went faster as I got lower, and my symptoms overall were minor at the end.  I was on Mirt for a little over 6 weeks before I started tapering and it took me 13.5 months, including the time I was on it to get off.

Thank you @Bestill for reaching out to me when I got some rough responses on this site after posting my struggle with my setback. Your friendship and support has meant so much.

Thank you @Shep for your consistent kindness to me no matter my struggle. Thanks to @Gigi68 and @marie123 for offering support and information. Thank you to @Santino for telling me I could get off Mirt again.

Post taper, I'm doing all right. I've had some night nights of broken sleep, but I do get chunks of sleep and average between 5-7 hours. My head feels a little spacey at times and lately I have some nausea daily.  I wish I had no symptoms, but I know that this is all part of the healing process and what I’m experiencing is manageable.

I currently have a frozen shoulder and believe it’s partially related to Mirt. I injured it during the late summer, and I feel because my muscles were so dehydrated from Mirt, the strained muscle moved into a frozen shoulder. The same thing happened at the end of benzo withdrawal. I tried physical therapy, which made things worse due to the inflammation and some Alexander Technique sessions but am waiting till I am further out post taper.

My recent story
For those of you reading this that don't know my story, this is the second time I have tapered Mirt. I had been off of it five years and benzos a year and a half when I had a benzo setback. The setback was caused by unavoidable surgery and the components used in the anesthesia. I had requested no benzos, opioids or fluoroquinolone antibiotics but did not anticipate them using a steroid, which I think really affected me.

I was thrown into acute withdrawal for 6.5 months. I lost my sleep, had anhedonia, medication induced agoraphobia and a horrific kind of insomnia that kept my mind jumping around all night. I was bedridden for 3 months and couldn't even do a child's puzzle. I tried all kinds of natural supplements for sleep, and nothing worked.

In desperation I turned to Mirt, (after trying Trazadone) taking doses ranging in 1.75 to 5mgs. I finally tried 7.5 for 2 weeks but it revved me up. So, I started tapering in the middle of a setback. When I got back down to the 5mg territory, I started sleeping.

During the setback, symptoms slowly dropped off one by one with the anhedonia (the worst symptom of all) leaving at 6.5 months.

I did many of the same things to support myself that I did when I posted my first success story.

  • Ate a low histamine diet about 90% of the time.

  • Took a vegetarian DAO supplement before meals about 80% of the time.

  • Ate pretty cleanly except when I got the Mirt munchies about 4 times a month.

  • Worked with a well-trained Psych K practitioner to help me with any subconscious beliefs blocking my healing. I had worked with one in my benzo withdrawal who helped quite a bit. My current practitioner has psychological training, which elevated the work even more.

I offer hope everyone tapering. I was on benzos twice, Mirt twice, Lamictal and had a terrible setback.

My brain healed from the setback, and I fully expect to heal from this last taper.

I will post monthly on how things are going.
