Blood in stools or rectal bleeding

Horns85

Recommended Posts

I apologize in advance for the crude question. Has anyone experienced blood in their stool?

I don't get it all the time but more often than not since coming off Lexapro. I know healing my gut is a big part of recovery. I have cut out caffeine, alcohol and I have always eaten clean.

I can only assume it's WD related/stress related. Anyone else have this issue?

Again, I apologize for the 'bathroom' question. Thanks.

This is probably from hemorrhoids.

If you are having diarrhea or messy stools, that can irritate hemorrhoids and cause them to bleed. Eating more vegetables, taking psyllium power for roughage, and using digestive enzymes with every meal can help regularize your stools.

Consult Dr. Google about hemorrhoids and see if that fits your symptoms. Occasionally bleeding hemorrhoids are not a big health issue.

If you think your condition is something else, or if you get a great amount of bleeding often, consult a gastroenterologist, who probably will want to do a colonoscopy (you can do this without drugs, I did it and it was no big deal).

This is not medical advice. Discuss any decisions about your medical care with a knowledgeable medical practitioner.

on meds, and most especially in withdrawal, ive had antipsychotic-induced 'bathroom problems'.  many psych meds cause your muscles to stop contracting like theyre supposed to, which can cause constipation as stool just builds up (and can furthermore become unnaturally bulky or sharply edged), or complicate swallowing (leaving the esophagus wide open for acid to ascend, causing heartburn, or causing you to choke on your food as you try to swallow it), or contribute to sexual dysfunction due to the nature of orgasm, as well as many other issues.

an important thing to determine is the origin of the blood in your stool.  based on the color, you can usually ascertain if it is originating in your stomach, your intestines, or your 'immediate vicinity'.  hemorrhoids and tearing/bleeding have been a significant problem for me during some cycles of withdrawing, and the blood content is fresh, like if you incised your skin.  digested seeming blood, usually blackish, is what suggests a problem higher up in your digestive system, like an ulcer, and warrants a closer examination.  here is a little chart about color.  its not super-detailed, but it can get you started when you have wonderings regarding color and content.

some of the most common causes of blood in the stool in this situation are: muscle/coordination problems, mucuous-membrane dryness, and anxiety-related bathroom habits (like being too forceful and not giving your body enough time to properly or comfortable excrete).  these can all result from psychotropic usage and withdrawal.  if you can monitor your behavior as it pertains to episodes of blood, maybe you can suss out an exact cause; it sounds like you might already on the right track.

no apologies necessary, the symptoms impacting our more delicate regions can be some of the more troubling to ponder.

from 2005-2012, i spent 7 years taking 17 different psychotropic medications covering several classes.  i would be taking 3-7 medications at a time, and 6 out of the 17 medications listed below were maxed or overmaxed in clinical dosage before i moved on to trying the next unhelpful cocktail.

antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs, NDRIs, tetracyclics): zoloft, wellbutrin, effexor, lexapro, prozac, cymbalta, remeron
antipsychotics (atypical): abilify, zyprexa, risperdal, geodon
sleep aids (benzos, off-label antidepressants & antipsychotics, hypnotics): seroquel, temazepam, trazodone, ambien
anxiolytics: buspar
anticonvulsants: topamax

i tapered off all psychotropics from late 2011 through early 2013, one by one.  since quitting, ive been cycling through severe, disabling withdrawal symptoms spanning the gamut of the serious, less serious, and rather worrisome side effects of these assorted medications.  previous cross-tapering and medication or dosage changes had also caused undiagnosed withdrawal symptoms.

Ugh.  I got a hemorrhoid in March or so.  History now.......but was also probably in some Lexapro W/D.  It wasn't so much the blood but the pain of it and I was pretty freaked in general.  GERD on Seroquel.......cleared after I came off the quel.  Colonoscopy went great for me last Spring, first screening preventative one at age 57......I talked to the anesthesia person and told them I didn't want antianxiety stuff and had had weird drug reactions.  They gave me the Michael Jackson drug without incidence.  Shoot......can't remember what it was called.  IV though, great dream and it was over.

Probably off topic but I'm glad I did the colonoscopy and there was no copay.......now I go 10 years until I should have another.

Maybe stress related.....I was a emotional wreck at the time.

Not to proud to say I got that one too, but it's not in stool just on paper so it's hemorrhoids. But damn I've had a ridiculous amt. of gas this week with this wave.

Paxil start September 2003 due to Fluoroquinolone adverse reaction that I wish doc. knew what it was. 10mg. most of the time with a few short runs of 20mg. FAST tapered 3 times and finally hit poop out or a reaction to nsaid's in Nov.2013. Started a 10% taper Jan. 2014 and have been ok until Sept 14 and went through a short hell. Now plodding through and looking for the light with unrelenting insomnia and pain, fog, loss of interests....<p>12/20/14 - .8mg.

1/01/15 - .75 mg.

1/15/15 - .42 mg. better sleep now, hope it continues...

2/11-15 - .25 mg. doing really good!! 2 weeks feel 85% of old me!

3/17/15 .14 mg. Knee pain bad!

4/07/15 .05 mg. this is so small now that I am estimating and just licking it off palm small as a "."

4/13/15 NOTHING !!!! Took my last little micro dose on 4/12/15.

Thanks everyone!

The blood does seem to be fresh and not constant so I can only assume hemorrhoids.

Please tell them about your problems taking and withdrawing from antidepressants and/or benzos.

Send by email to petitions@parliament.scot and quote PE01651 in the subject heading. Keep to a maximum of 3 sides of A4 and you can't name for legal reasons any doctor you have consulted. Sorry.....still don't know how to start a topic.  But another general GI/GU symptom that maybe has come and gone for others.

I think having a metallic taste in your mouth is also a sign of some of the drugs coming on out of your body.

Gross though as well.  Floss, brush, and mouthwash.  And it is still there a bit.

Do you think the w/d stuff is kind of due to a long slow detoxification process?  I do.

Hi Horns,

Just saw this thread.

I had it for a few days during my worst WD period last year. And I am very sure it's not from hemorrhoid.

kicking this thread back up because i noticed the symptoms of an upper GI bleed and consulted with a nurse and then went to the emergency room.

i was right, but they said its slow so i should just see my GP and maybe get a gastroenterologist recommendation within the next few days.  i cant make an appointment until monday, and may or may not be able to get an appointment within the following week.

any withdrawal advice about upper GI bleeding?  they said it was not relevant that ive recently had serotonin syndrome or have been experiencing withdrawal.  i asked about things like dietary restrictions or changes of habit, but it seems like they thought i should just sit it out, as it has been going on several days now and i am...uh...not dead or incapacitated.

thanks for your concern and response.

i had a slow or periodic bleed for a few days, and it may have largely subsided by now.  im not sure if it has stopped or will slow instead of worsening.  but im ok right now, and did not have any acute signs of significant blood loss.  at least, not as differentiable from other altered states of consciousness and various withdrawal issues that come and go at any given time.

the nurses and doctor saw my withdrawal history and former medications as irrelevant, but i am aware of the risk for upper GI bleeding, other abnormal bleeding, clotting problems, etc.  since i significantly polydrugged, and have been experiencing dozens of completely new symptoms since quitting meds, i think the likelihood of this being a coincidence is quite poor.

i will try to schedule an appointment with my GP on monday (later today), and he may or may not send me to someone else.  i dont relish the idea of a waking endoscopy, if they end up having that in mind, and a sedated one is not fun or without risk of withdrawal complications, either.  i dont know if he will want to do anything at all unless there is a verified, active bleed---even if there is fresh scarring or a healing legion or something, it might not be medically significant to them.

i just read through a few papers after beginning this post...i noticed that i drank an entire gallon of milk in just one day, halfway through the 3+ day period of bleeding, which is about 3 times as quickly as ive normally been drinking milk while in withdrawal.  i noted it was quite exceptional, and also mentioned it to the emergency room staff, but they didnt think anything of it.  well, it could be that my body was healing itself---a lot of upper GI bleeding is from unbalanced microflora, and milk (and fermented dairy) are effective in working that out in the case of the prime bacterial culprit.

i know SSRIs are linked to cardiovascular abnormalities, and also disruptions of our GI zoo, so this would take some more specific research to pinpoint more relevant information.  im tired and disoriented, so if i have time another day i might sink some reading into this.  its not like the doctors arent going to.

Hi IU ,

"  i dont relish the idea of a waking endoscopy, if they end up having that in mind, and a sedated one is

not fun or without risk of withdrawal complications, either."

You need to be sedated for an endoscopy. The camera goes down your throat and it's not possible to do while you're awake.

I had one under sedation and apart from my nerves (I had a colonoscopy at the same time)  it was lovely. Best sleep in ages.   Most people have them safely even whilst in w/d.

I haven't seen any posts on this site ever about adverse reactions from an endoscopy.

If you have ongoing GI problems , it's sensible to have one done.  Then you know if there's something visible going on.

1987-1997 pertofran , prothiaden , Prozac 1997-2002 Zoloft 2002-2004 effexor 2004-2010 Lexapro 40mg

2010-2012Cymbalta 120mg

Sept. 2012 -decreased 90mg in 6months. Care taken over by Dr Lucire in March 2013 , decreased last 30mg at 2mg per week over 3 months. July 21 , 2013- last dose of Cymbalta

Protracted withdrawal syndrome kicked in badly Jan.2014 Unrelenting akathisia until May 2014. Voluntary hosp. admission. Cocktail of Seroquel, Ativan and mirtazapine and I was well enough to go home after 14 days. Stopped all hosp. meds in next few months.

July 2014 felt v.depressed - couldn't stop crying. Started pristiq 50mg. Felt improvement within days and continued to improve, so stayed on 50mg for 8 months.

Began taper 28 Feb. 2015. Pristiq 50mg down to 45mg. Had one month of w/d symptoms. Started CES therapy in March. No w/d symptoms down to 30mg.

October 2015 , taking 25mg Pristiq. Capsules compounded with slow-release additive.

March 2016 , 21mg

to all---thanks for the kind words.

in the emergency room, they run blood for everyone as a matter of protocol.  the doctor said my blood looked great.  he said i have a lot of it...er...whatever that means.  i guess just that i wasnt losing it all.  im not sure what theyd look for in blood pertaining to this...clotting factors, perhaps.  but it was just the standard procedure, for intake.  he said i was healthier than most people he looks at.  good to hear.

im 4-5 years off meds, now.  some things work better than 2 and 4 years ago, some work worse.  but, overall healing.  and i have some of my memories back compared to 5 years ago...intermittently, but they are there, under the surface, it seems.

i thought maybe they can scope your esophagus even if you are awake.  good to know that is probably not even an option.  ive had a few endoscopies under sedation.  one was over a decade ago and was a lot cruder and horrible...the recent one was uneventful, aside from having no idea where my clothes went...cuz i was wearing them but didnt know i had put them back on.  i was zonked as **** but they kicked me out of the hospital.

my withdrawal did complicate the latter one, but no enduring problems, insofar as i can tell.  i had a dental procedure with common drugs that came back to haunt me, though...i am cautious now.  im not sure what sort of recent activities or damages would show up on an endoscopy.  i have a feeling the doctor might just say that if the bleeding has seemingly stopped, there is no reason to schedule a procedure.  i never get any medical attention for stuff like kidney stones and liver dysfunction, so the chances of anything happening dont seem strong.

some day i will update my thread.  i am owing at least one person, and it has been quite a while.

from 2005-2012, i spent 7 years taking 17 different psychotropic medications covering several classes.  i would be taking 3-7 medications at a time, and 6 out of the 17 medications listed below were maxed or overmaxed in clinical dosage before i moved on to trying the next unhelpful cocktail.

antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs, NDRIs, tetracyclics): zoloft, wellbutrin, effexor, lexapro, prozac, cymbalta, remeron
antipsychotics (atypical): abilify, zyprexa, risperdal, geodon
sleep aids (benzos, off-label antidepressants & antipsychotics, hypnotics): seroquel, temazepam, trazodone, ambien
anxiolytics: buspar
anticonvulsants: topamax

i tapered off all psychotropics from late 2011 through early 2013, one by one.  since quitting, ive been cycling through severe, disabling withdrawal symptoms spanning the gamut of the serious, less serious, and rather worrisome side effects of these assorted medications.  previous cross-tapering and medication or dosage changes had also caused undiagnosed withdrawal symptoms.

Ugh.. I had this the first week or two and it completely freaked me out..(after stopping generic lexapro). I calmed down by reading forums like this. I am just 3 weeks to the day off completely of the medication and am still suffering severe gastrointestinal issues..started a probiotic 5 days ago and trying to eat more mindfully..as in things that will not cause bathroom issues so to speak..not entirely successful, and I have a Dr. appt tomorrow to address this particular concern..I am guessing he will not say it is med related but will say it is anxiety related..meanwhile emotionally/mentally I feel better than I did on the med and will NOT be trying ANY other meds. I understand how stressful the blood can be and I hope it subsides quickly for you.

Started with 10mg escitalopram, felt horrible so after 1 week, I went to 5mg, then after 1 week at 5, I went to 2.5 mg for about a week, then to zero..so a total of about 3 weeks, from January 30,2017-February 21,2017...have had terrible gastrointestinal upset since I stopped..and some odd body aches..trying to determine if the escitalopram harmed me at least in the way of stressing out my gut bacteria.

Hard to say Lorin.  Hemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels in the bottom.  So no, they don't pass like kidney stones.  The inflammation and bleeding stopped.  And hasn't returned.

Could have been due to a medication I was still on then......... or possibly from Lexapro W/D.  I don't know.  My response to the hemorrhoids was really magnified though, as at that time I was in early Lexapro W/D.  The neuroemotions we talk about here.  I am calmer about most stuff now.

Best,

I understand that GI/rectal bleeding can happen whilst taking SSRIs, but has anyone experienced it after withdrawal? I do have minor haemorrhoids, but have never bled like this before.  Full colonoscopy 2 years ago, which was normal.

May be worth getting it checked again. A lot can happen in two years since your last colonoscopy. Consider looking at your diet eg remove diary gluten etc. try low fodmap. Consider whether bowels are moving well. Try soluble fibre. But definitely get a doctor to check.

In Jan 2011 started Lexapro 10 mg after 10 minutes consultation with doctor telling him I felt anxious in confined spaces and had an anxiety attack on plane and underground. Remained on that dosage until Sept 2014. Tapered following a doctor's schedule on 2.5 mg drops every three weeks. Once stopped I developed severe withdrawals. Three weeks of Prozac beginning of Oct 2014 but had adverse reaction and stopped CT. Protracted withdrawals since. Supp now - magnesium, fish oil, turmeric, vit D, melatonin (but recently it's made me depressed), castus vitex capsule with ginger, Withania, Vit E, zinc, Lutein for PMS.

I don't know of any connection between antidepressant withdrawal and rectal bleeding. It's probably your hemorrhoids, the most obvious source.

Bleeding from hemorrhoids is usually due to constipation or loose stools. Management of hemorrhoids generally is: avoid dehydration, drink lots of water, ingest lots of fiber -- vegetables are a good source. If necessary, take psyllium powder in water to increase intake of roughage.

Some drugs may make you constipated, which exacerbates hemorrhoids. You need to adjust your habits to counter that. Talk to your doctor about side effects.

Treatment of hemorrhoids is not a central purpose of this site. Please consult Dr. Google to find additional ways to manage hemorrhoids and see your doctor.
