NobodySpecial
L Theanine works for me, but it's not as good as something like Baicalin, Skullcap or Ashwaganda (KSM-66). Taper commencing 14/06/18: Going down by 2.5mg per month from 35mg - once 2.5mg is bigger than the recommended 10%, I'll switch to a water solution. Planning to taper until October and then hold until 2019 - balancing study, work, life and holiday season. Medication / withdrawal history: Tapered July 2016 to October 2016, unsuccessful and reinstated to 30mg (didn't track specifics) Tapered March 2017 to August 2017, was unsuccessful and reinstated to 35mg (didn't track specifics). Current taper - started 1st January 2018 @ 32.5mg and 2.5mg per month until I reach a dose where 2.5 is > 10% of dose. Morning supplements: B complex, Niagen, COQ10, Black seed oil, Vitamin C, Zinc, Fish Oil, EGCG, Bosweilla Extract, Curcumin (Longvida), Vitamin D, R-ALA, NAC, Ashwagandha (occasionally), Epimedium / Icariin, Resveratol. Evening supplements: NatureCalm Magnesium, Glycine, Ashwagandha, Reishi, Schisandra, Melatonin. I also take Phenibut (maximum 3 times weekly at a dose that doesn't build tolerance) and Oleamide when required.

NobodySpecial
@Miko789 , I know you're not directing to your question to me but I can shed some light. 200 - 400mg seems to be my sweet spot, and this is taking Liftmode's L-Theanine. You can take grams + and it'll have an impact, but I think that 200 - 400mg is probably the most effective dose. A side effect I've noticed is slight irritability, something that happens 'occasionally' and I've also noticed with things like benzodiazepines or phenibut. Keep in mind, the irritability I notice from L-theanine is markedly less. Taper commencing 14/06/18: Going down by 2.5mg per month from 35mg - once 2.5mg is bigger than the recommended 10%, I'll switch to a water solution. zibius
Hi guys, I read a lot of info on L-Theanine. What it does and the interaction but the info is conflicting. Most site says it works on GABA, dopamine and serotonin. But some says it's ok to take it while on antidepressants. Why is there no serotonin poising-overdose happening ? Aside from that, people seem to like it for is calming effects. 2016 Back to cipralex 10 mg 2018 March From 10 mg to 5 mg cipralex 2018 april 15, stopped 5 mg cipralex 2018 May 16 Hypersensitive skin as withdrawal 2018 May 19 to 23 took 5 mg cipralex but skin was more painful so stopped cipralex 2018 May 30, skin is feeling better 2018 June 28, very stressful event 2018 July 3, Skin is more painful 2018 July 8, started .5 mg cipralex 2018 July 12 skin is even worst Supplements Omega 3, Magnesium

JP904
I hear L- Theanine has been helpful for some, but it induced the worst period of symptoms that I've personally had in the last few years. A day after I took 1 dose, I could hardly move around my house. I felt like I was deeply sick- I was incredibly lethargic and felt this pressure around my eyes that is accompanied by this awful feeling. I took just this 1 dose in May and I still haven't made it back to where I was and it's been 7 months now. I feel like the last 7 months has just been a waste in withdrawal. I had only been off of all my meds for 5 months, so I probably took this too soon. My body is incredibly sensitive. It's crazy because I was actually feeling pretty great and had been for a few months. I felt like I was out of the woods and then because of something I had the power over, I threw myself right back into the darkest part of the woods. It was very scary. I hope that I don't have to deal with this pressure around my eyes for too many more months. 2009 - 10/2014: 40MG Citalopram 10/2014: Started taper by liquid titration by about 5% every few weeks (1000 times harder than Benzo taper) 1/26/17: 3.5 MG 3/12/2017: 2.9 MG 12/06/2017: Finished my taper 12/24/2018: took a amino acid called L-Theanine in May, which made my symptoms far worse and 7 months later, I'm still feeling the negative effects. My symptoms are about the same as they were when I finished my taper a year ago. 2009 - 10/2012: 2 MG of Klonopin 10/2012: Hit tolerance and began taper 12/2013: Finished liquid titration taper (less than 10% every few weeks) Experienced protracted withdrawal and was about 80% healed by 10/14 when I started my citalopram taper. Moderator Onmyway Posted June 13, 2019 Moderator Share Posted June 13, 2019 L-theanine made me incredibly nauseous today. It had some nausea inducing effects before but nothing this severe. I guess the usual warnings: start slow, start by itself only and follow your symptoms. I used to take benzodiazepines occasionally (xanax, clonopin) and xanax also started inducing nausea during withdrawal. Not sure if it is at all related to their mode of action wth GABA (I am not quite sure if anyone knows the real mode of action here anyway). My 2 cents. clarknova
After trying every supplement known to man, L-theanine is the only one that stood out as having a genuine noticeable effect for me. Very calming and soothing when I start taking it, and then it loses its effect on me after a week or so. Maybe it's better as an occasional help then as a regular supplement. Malon
I tried 200 mg L-theanine several time after 0mg SSRI for anxiety after I read many positive experiences. However, I had extreme paradoxal effects with high anxiety and even panic attacks. It helped with fatique. I would recommend to be be very careful if you try this. It seems to be very individual and in WD you never know. Animal studies showed and decrease in serotine in brain from l-theanine. AD since 2006 (16 years old). Prescribed on Citalopram, Fluoxetin(2x), Opipramol, Paroxetin. All with CT except Paroxetin (fast taper). Last medication was Paroxetin for 3 years. Tapered fast: - October 2018: 10mg -> 5mg - December 2018: 5mg -> 2,5mg - February 2019: 2,5mg -> 1,25mg - March 2019: 1,25mg -> 1 mgSince May 2019: 0 mg Supplements: - Omega 3 (2200mg EPA + DHA ) - Vitamin D 2000 i.u. and Vitamin K2 50 mcg - Vitamin B12 (100mcg) - Zinc (4 mg) - Magnesium-Bisglycinat (100mg elemantal Mg) 30 months off and improvements but still setbacks. Bee5
Hi All, I would like to share my experience with L-theanine. I have only ever consumed it as green tea. The first time I started consuming one cup of green tea daily (mid-2018), I developed intrusive thoughts, so I stopped it immediately, and the thoughts went away. Thinking that this was maybe a random occurrence, I tried green tea almost a year later, and literally the same thing happened: after a few days, cue intrusive thoughts. Discontinued immediately. I have scoured the internet and this forum, and although many people mention paradoxical effects or anxiety, no one mentions the intrusive thoughts, so I am mentioning it on here, in case anyone has the same reaction as I did. Regards, Bee 7 months of prescribed polypharmacy in 2015-2016, including several classes of psych meds. 1st attempt at taper was too fast. 2nd attempt is underway. 1 Mar 2018: 37.5 mg paroxetine, 150 mg lamotrigine, 300 mg quetiapine 1 Oct 2020: 30 mg paroxetine, 150 mg lamotrigine, 37.5 mg quetiapine 15 May 2022: 25 mg paroxetine, 150 mg lamotrigine, 0 mg quetiapine 11 Jan 2024: 20 mg paroxetine, 118.75 mg lamotrigine Supplements: Iron, Vit D magnesium glycinate, omega 3 I am not a medical professional. bottlehalffull
I've been using theanine occasionally for the past few years for anxiety and sleep. It definitely takes the edge off a panic attack, and if I drink too much caffeine it can smooth out the jitters from that. Somewhere I read that if you put it under your tongue it works almost instantly, and I tried it and it seems to be the case. I don't know exactly the dose I've been using, probably about 100 mg but I have it as bulk powder and don't weigh it. If I use it multiple days in a row I stop seeing effects. But. That was all before starting to taper off lamotrigine. A couple nights ago I was getting ready for bed and my partner started talking to me about bills and I went from being tired to being wide awake. Anxious, and kind of annoyed/angry that they would bring a topic like that up right when I'm trying to go to sleep. Took some theanine and the anxiety got worse. Maybe it's because normally I've used it on "pure" anxiety and not anger + anxiety. Maybe it's because of the lamotrigine taper. My sleep wasn't great that night. Could have been from the theanine, could have been from eating chocolate too late in the day, could have been hormones... 2018/7 Started on lamotrigine (12.5 mg) and escitalopram (2.5 mg). Tapered up over the course of a month to 50 mg LTG, 10 mg escit. Kept tapering LTG up to 75 mg by 2018/10. 2018/11 Crosstapered from escitalopram to sertraline. 2018/12 Was still taking both SSRIs (escit. 5 mg, sert. 25 mg) when sert. was discontinued to trial quetiapine. Quet. tapered up to 25 mg, but tapered back down after 3 days on the full dose because side effects. Total time on quetiapine 10 days. Switched back to cross tapering esit. and sert., started tapering LTG up to 100 mg. 2019/1 Lamotrigine 100 mg, sertraline 12.5 mg, escitalopram 5 mg. Finally discontinued escit. and on full dosage of sertraline (25 mg) 2019/04. 2019/11 About two weeks of sertraline 12.5 mg, but went back up to 25 mg. 2019/12/4 Lamotrigine taper: too fast, down to 25 mg over the course of about 10 days. Also started increase sertraline 37.5 mg during luteal phase of menstrual cycle for PMDD. 2020/(early) on 22 mg lamotrigine for a while, maybe a month and a half, maybe longer, then 2020/03 Institutionalized for self harm. I think I was trying to taper the sertraline at the time, don't remember the details. Doses increased: Sertraline 50 mg/lamotrigine 25 mg (current regimen). Supposed to be taking seroquel and abilify (TWO antipsychotics?!) but didn't take any once I was discharged from the institution. (Was on them a few days.) ________________________________________________________ 2001(?) Citalopram, don't remember dosage, cold turkey after a couple months and had terrible withdrawals, including what in retrospect was probably PAWS for the next five or so years. (agoraphobia, crippling social anxiety, anhedonia, dp/dr).

Hello, What is the maximum dose of l-theanine ? can i take 600 mg daily? Dear Adal, with any supplement in WD the advice is to start at the lowest possible dosage as our systems react differently. I took L-theanine at 200mg and it made me nauseous but did calm me a bit so I stopped it. You might want to start with 25mg and see if that has an effect and then go from there if no adverse reactions. Dee12h
Just wanted to add my experience. I first tried theanine before ADs to help with anxiety & focus. All the reviews said to take it with caffeine for a “calm focused energy”. I could not stay awake; I was nodding off on the couch at 10 am with a preschooler to care for! Took me 3 days to figure out it was the theanine! So I stopped & filed it away to try in the future as a sleep aid, which it works great for for me. I’ve been doing 200mg sunthenaine, which seems slightly better than my other natural sleep aids, including melatonin. I do cycle all my natural sleep aids & take none whenever possible. But I cannot take it during the day (I think most people can from what I’ve read. Lemon balm is the only thing thing I’ve taken that helps with anxiety but doesn’t make me really sleepy, except maybe magnesium, so I take that during the day.) I also noticed last night I was pretty depressed right before bed. 30 min after theanine, the depression lifted & I also felt calm. I’m still trying to figure out if it’s giving me side effects the next morning. Maybe dizziness, but I’ve been super dizzy lately even when not on it, so idk. Will update. 1 May 2019 started lexapro 2.5 mg; 2020 went to every other day; 2021 beginning of Mar, tried to stop but had insomnia; Mar 30, 2021 reinstated 1.25 ev other day, WD symptoms, not enough April 19, 2021 started liquid, .85 mg/day; May 1, 2021 .8 mg/day; May 6, 2021 .75 mg/day; June 6, 2021 .7 mg/day, June 20, 2021 .65mg/day, June 30, 2021 .6mg/day, Jul 24 .55 mg/day, Oct 17 .5 mg/day, Dec 5- .45 mg/day; Jan 26, 2022- 4mg/day; April 18- .375 lex; April 24- .35 lex; April 29- .3 lex; Jun 12- .25 mg lex; Jun 28- .2 mg lex; Sept- .15 mg, Nov .1 June ‘23- PPPD started 🙁, Jun- .09, Jul- .08, Oct- .07, Dec- .06, Jan ‘24- .05! Seaweedbrain
So this supplement should be taken at night then? I have really bad morning tachycardia/anxiety that makes it almost impossible to function. Would taking it in the mornings potentially help? 2013 Was put on fluoxetine 10mg for anxiety at 14 2014 six months on risperidone, taken off due to side effects 2015 one month of abilify, fluoxetine increased to 20 mg 2020 fluoxetine increased to 40 mg, trazadone 15mg for insomnia 2023 May 15 ct stopped both meds, reinstated 20mg of fluoxetine after suicide ideation currently tapered down to 2.5mg
Seaweedbrain
My experience with it has been very mixed so far. Taking it in the mornings for calm works to an extent, but makes my fatigue and amotivation considerably worse. I’ll see if taking it at night is more suitable 1 2013 Was put on fluoxetine 10mg for anxiety at 14 2014 six months on risperidone, taken off due to side effects 2015 one month of abilify, fluoxetine increased to 20 mg 2020 fluoxetine increased to 40 mg, trazadone 15mg for insomnia 2023 May 15 ct stopped both meds, reinstated 20mg of fluoxetine after suicide ideation currently tapered down to 2.5mg
