My IBS has calmed - thankfully.

Am on the charcoal capsules now (x4 after each meal) and have increased the peppermint oil capsules.

That episode was triggered by a stressful interview.

I have been experiencing bad bladder sensitivity today, and when hubby and I were having lunch, I had a strong urge to have to pee, but I only managed to pee very concentrated urine in a small amount.  This was so concerning that I spoke to a pharmacist, who said it was just dehydration but to continue to monitor.

She said, that IBS can cause that (if constipation pressing against bladder and also changes in hydration levels), but my body had probably gotten rid of any excess fluid, and may be holding on to some too.  Sometimes it takes time for the body to catch up with itself.  She was really helpful and we ended up discussing "female issues".

She said for women in the peri-meno, "expect anything"!

My bladder is fine now, and I'm peeing normally again.

Have just figured out that WD is exploiting my current "weak spot" which is my bladder.  Why there? because I'm in peri-meno and this is what has been giving me a lot of trouble over the last few months.

This evening I have been hit with pelvic floor pain, the rectal area and muscles around the bladder.

No bladder infection either.

Its the muscles and nerve endings that are being targeted, and I remember this from the last WD hell I went through which was:

Intense pain in my right arm (went to ER on Canadian Thanksgiving Day - nothing found), intense sciatic nerve pain right up my right leg from the foot (again went to ER - nothing found).  Intense pain in my hips and lower back - a few sessions with the osteopath corrected that but took a while to resolve.

So, here I am again, with scary symptoms but in the bladder and pelvic area.  This is an area of the body that women going through the peri-meno are affected.

Anyway, I'm hoping this was a "lightbulb moment", and maybe I can relax a bit?  Going to visit my osteopath here and see if she can tweak my pelvic floor muscles so get them to relax - and MAYBE the pain will ease off?

Hi junglechicken

‘if it’s any comfort I have had terrible discomfort in my nether area, bladder and horrible bowel cramping since I went into w/d then trying to stabilise. As I start to feel a bit better these symptoms fade away then when I go downhill again which is fairly often while I am still trying to get stability it all comes back like now. Nothing to do with menopause I had total hysterectomy few years ago and on hrt so I have thought that it was nerve endings doing it. I did get horrible burning feet but that stopped and now affects my face normally early in the morning only. Itching on my lower legs. All nerve pain I think which I’m hoping is a good sign of cns repairing.

2006 After sudden death of mother put on 20mg of citaloprom for depression.

2014 Drug stopped working after two weeks of panic attacks felt fine.

Aug 2014. Doctor put me on lyrica for rash on face, diarrhoea, sleeplessness, muscle cramp, bruising. Initial dose too strong, halved dose.  Stopped taking it 22/10/14

2014 severe anxiety after several ssri's attempted, seem to have developed severe  sensitivity to any drug, but giving severe  reactions put on cipralex drop form.started on 2 drops and had to increase by 1 drop every 3 days. Eventually got to 12 drops and had to stop as side effects every step of the way dreadful. Psychiatrist kept telling me to stick with it and my body would get used to it.  Eventually down to 8 drops. Bad reactions throughout the time I was on it

Have been on this until may 2017. Stopped over two weeks. Felt fine for 5 weeks after initial dizziness, nightmares, nausea, insomnia.

Given diazepam by gp and told to take them when anxiety bad. Have only taken them very rarely as they frighten me.

Last two weeks severe anxiety returned and feeling hopeless

11July 2017. Cipralex 2mg. Anxiety, nausea still severe

13 July 2017 Cipralex 1mg due to advice of too high dosage  by kind person on thus site. so dropped from 2mg to 1mg and feelings of anxiety still at severe. As well as nausea, headaches, fatigue.

15 July still feeling extremely anxious verging on panic. Nausea, feelings of fainting, fatigue. Lots of head pains

3 August. Three weeks into trying to stabilise on one drop of cipralex. Still have waking from 4am. Sporadic upset stomach. Nausea.  High anxiety.  Throbbing/burning in nether regions seems to have eased for time being but stabbing/burning in calves of legs. Tinnitus. Occasional half to whole better days but mainly still struggling. Fatigue

I think then that this a "NEW" area of the body to be affected by WD as the last time my bowels and bladder weren't affected.

Hmmm, will see what my osteopath can do.

Really appreciate your input ladies......oh, and the headaches have started today too :(

Experienced a nasty right sided headache (sinuses) last night along with nausea so have added those to my list of WD symptoms.

This morning I have an upset stomach and anxiety.

Going to go for a walk soon and get fresh air.  Didn't go out yesterday which always makes me feel agitated.

Trying to adjust to my new "WD state".

Hi junglechicken

‘no consolation but I also have the nausea  and nasty head pains so it would seem cipralex/lexapro has some horrible ways of making us suffer.  The anxiety for me is the worst symptom from being woken by it and then no relief most of the day. When I get better days, not very often, it all disappears.

Fatigue

Hi Scorpio,

Uggh! its bad isn't it?

I just got back from a walk, had a pee, and whilst wiping saw a pale spot of blood (I'm mid-cycle).  That's alarming as I NEVER get that....maybe its WD as well?

Anyway, I'm with you on the anxiety, its awful - we can rationalise all we want but the fear is a constant.

Looks like we're almost neighbours!

Hi junglechicken

‘are you sure it’s not cystitis as well as w/d. The blood could be part of that.

Anxiety the biggest hardest symptom in both our books. I know mindfulness and breathing are helpful but my brain is so scrambled with anxiety I just find it impossible to be able to do either and get relief.

For all the ladies who are interested, dip test was NEGATIVE AGAIN, lol!!!!!

BUT, I'm doing my nut  really am with these wretched bladder symptoms every 5 mins.

The nurse (who I've seen before) is an absolute angel, and we chatted about the possibility of having a scan, she then decided the bladder sensitivity may resolve as linked to the IBS I've been having the past few days.  Something RS or Scorpio mentioned over the weekend.

So, I've clocked up ANOTHER bike ride in lycra clutching my urine sample :D

Lord help me!

P.S The nurse thought that the spot of blood was probably just passed out from my ovaries as I'm mid-cycle.  She said its nothing to worry about as there has been no spotting or abnormalities going on.

I'm so sorry to hear that JC. Very frustrating for you. I hope you feel better soon. I'm glad the blood was nothing. But you got to talk to someone and ride your bike in your leggings with your sample 😋

I have had 2 bouts of diarrhea this morning. But like I said, Friday night I ate a lot of sugar (and it's going to happen this time of year for me). Then had dinner with the neighbors Saturday night. I'm not sure what kind of spices he used on the ribs and they were pork. Then had spaghetti last night. I don't like this IBS stuff either. But I think some of mine is food and stress/anxiety. The holidays yuck...

Lets both get rid of this together. You tell me how and I'll do it lol...

Take care,

PREVIOUS medications and discontinuations: Have been on medications since 1996.

Valium, Gabapentin, Lamictal, Prilosec and Zantac from 2000 to 2015 with a fast taper by a psychiatrist.

Liquid Lexapro Nov, 2016 to 31-March, 2019 Lexapro free!!! (total Lexapro taper was 4 years-started with pill form)

---CURRENT MEDICATIONS:Supplements:Milk Thistle, Metamucil, Magnesium Citrate, Vitamin D3, Levothyroxine 25mcg, Vitamin C, Krill oil.

Xanax 1mg 3x day June, 2000 to 19-September, 2020 Went from .150 grams (average weight of 1 Xanax) 3x day to .003 grams 3x day. April 1, 2021 went back on 1mg a day. Started tapering May 19, 2023. July 28, 2023-approximately .87mg. Dr. fast tapered me at the end and realized he messed up. Prescribe it again and I am doing "slower than a turtle" taper.

19-September, 2020 Xanax free!!! (total Xanax taper was 15-1/2 months-1-June, 2019-19-September, 2020)

I am not a medical professional.

The suggestions I make are based on personal experience.

Thanks Frogie, the nurse said it was one of those things that could just resolve itself, as I've had it for about 6 weeks now.  She mentioned something called "PBS".

So sorry that you're still having the runs.......and yes, you could well be sensitive to sugar now.  Yes, this time of year is particularly tough when it comes to maintaining a clean diet.

Our regimes just get thrown by the wayside.

If you have IBS, then it doesn't really matter what you eat, its a disease episode which will take however long its going to take to resolve itself.  With IBS, its all in the head and so you have to be feeling happier again for your gut to relax and function normally.

I would be a hypocrite if I tried to tell you how to make it better, as I'm not exactly doing well at it myself!

As you're not used to going out and eating, that in itself has upset your routine which would throw you out completely - we ARE that sensitive at the moment.

All you can do, is minimise your stress levels, rest, and help your body recover as much as possible.

Thanks for telling me that you could buy them!!

TC,

JC xxx

Thanks JC:

It's so hard this time of year not to have stress/anxiety for me. I don't get to see my granddaughter like I want. I see my Uncle and that's it. I will get to see my granddaughter sometime during Christmas which is nice. We bake cookies and laugh and just get silly. She's 10.

I didn't know that IBS was caused by being happier. I will be happier then... It started Saturday after I ate the sugar and stuff at the party. So I figured it was my diet. And it us this time of year too. I'll live on Imodium and be ok for a few more days.

I just want to go home. And we keep talking about it. It just heightens my stress/anxiety about getting out of here.

I hope you feel better, you have had this long enough.

Take care,

Frogie xx

Hi jc

so pleased for you that you haven’t got dreaded cystitis. Where did you get the strips from, sound ideal and much easier than the trauma of having to see Doctors unless we have to.

Hope the dreaded bowels and discomfort soon go.

Fatigue

On a GOOD note, that bothersome phlegm I had for well over a year just stopped a couple of weeks ago.

Complete mystery, my body must have cleared what it needed to clear and that was the end of it.

Much as symptoms scare me, the human body is pretty amazing as well.

Hi JC. It's been a while  :) ~ You have been through some ongoing issues. I hope you resolve them, in time . I understand the frustration of a seemingly endless stream of symptoms that really seems to have no beginning or end .That can certainly be the never-ending joy of withdrawal. The gift that just keeps on giving ...

We have momentarily addressed your very quick taper previously, but is it something that you are not really willing to talk about? I noticed that discussion got shut down very quickly ~

It was very quickly glossed over and yet whenever I read your thread , it continues to remain an ongoing question for me.There is a lot of discussion about symptoms but not much to do with the actual tapering which is absolutely crucial.

What is your taper schedule? Times/ dates/ doses? How are you feeling generally? Symptoms apart from the IBS, cystitis etc... I know that it's hard; not so very simple and also cyclical.

Many SSRI's and SSNRI's over 20 years. Zoloft for 7 years followed by Effexor, Lexapro, Prozac, Cymbalta, Celexa, Pristiq, Valdoxan, Mianserin and more - on and off. No tapering. Cold turkey off Valdoxan - end of May 2014

Psych Drug - free since May 2014

Hi Ali,

Yes it has, and thanks for stopping by :)

Apart from the cystitis and IBS I'm actually doing ok symptom-wise.  I had a few aches and pains which seem to have gone, and a headache and nausea which went.

I'm exercising, eating healthily, seeing a nutritionist and a therapist, and so all the support is there.

What's been tough are back to back interviews every week for several months now, and its the interviews which triggered the IBS/cystitis episodes.  My therapist suggested I take a break for a couple of weeks just to take the pressure off.  We are also in the process of buying a house and so am handling all the administrative stuff for that.

Then there are the hormonal fluctuations which have shown up in the FSH tests, and I will have another test in 3 months time to see what's going on.  Needless to say, the hormonal issues are creating symptoms too.

I don't have a taper schedule - am currently on 1.25mg which is 50% of my previous 2.5mg dose and will stay at that dose for a few months until things settle, and then come off Lexapro completely.  You're all going to "scream" at me and question this, but that's my plan.  The liquid Lexapro wasn't an option due to the concentration, as I would never have been able to get a small enough amount into the pipette to get the dose right.  There wasn't a pipette small enough to deal with the tiny amount, and reducing by 10% increments would have been impossible.

So having spent a couple of years putting off the inevitable due to the move back across the pond etc., I just wanted to get on with it.

TC,

JC xx

JC:

I stay completely away from the news. It just ramps up my anxiety/panic attacks.

So I will take your word for this.

I can't take the pain in my lower back. Called the chiropractor. They said I could have popped my back out of place so I'm going to chiropractor this afternoon. I hope he can get it back in so I'm not in pain on Thanksgiving. It's been a week since I hurt it and it feels the same, not getting better.

Hope you are feeling better.

Hi Frogie,

If back pain is unbearable, then there is not much option but to get it "manipulated".  I hope you will get some relief from this too.

My IBS is still lingering, so I will have to let it run its course.

Made it to face to face interview stage with another company, but got rejected for a role I was interviewed for last week which was a disappointment.

Sorry to hear you didn't get the job. Maybe this one will come through.

I have to try something. My back is really hurting and it hurts on the spine the radiates out. So I think it's out of place from carrying those totes. Hopefully the chiropractor can make me feel better.

The only thing you can do is let IBS run it's course. Sorry to hear that.

I have never had therapy but my GP offered it to me last year but I felt I didn't need it.

3 years ago I reported the abuse in my first marriage to the police as I had medical evidence and for the first time in my life I felt strong enough to do it. A year gone August on a Tuesday morning the police visited my first husband about my complaint and that afternoon he hanged himself successfully.  His widow contacted me by text but I got it a day late as part phone reception is poor at our farm.

That threw me but I recovered from it without going on more pills.

I get side effects of weight gain and lethargy from taking citalopram and severe withdrawal at times but most days I feel really well.

I will stay on citalopram if I have to.  My GP thinks I will not get further than 10 mg.  I really don't know but I enjoy my working life at present and won't letyield get so I'll. I have to go off sick.  I would at that point take more pills if I had to.

Yes I have reached acceptance now bit I complained to NHS England about my care or lack of it over the years.  Since I made the official complaint my doctors have respected me a lot more.

Regarding the cystitis there are so many factors that you need to look at everything in angela kilmartins books.  You may have urethritis or may need to change your diet.  You may have thrush or hormone imbalance you may be too clean or not clean enough you may be allergic to toiletries or certain birth control may not suit you.

The bladder  area is full of nerve endings to keep us visiting the toilet when we need but it means when we are anxious we become more aware of our bladders.

Some people have too much sex for their bodies.

In her books she explores all options.

I do know our bodies like regular settled lives and routines and that if we are changing jobs or looking for work we are not settled.  For our bodies to function well they need our minds to be settled.

I used to use simple soap and cotton undies but now I use anything and synthetic control.pants.  I used to get a lot of thrush but don't now I have reduced sugar in my diet.

For IBS I used to take buscopan which I found very good.

Your analogy about cancer is wise but cancer is still.more socially acceptable.

We need better psychiatric meds for those that do need them but there is no current research into it as companies are afraid of being sued.

Cystitis and IBS are functioning diseases and not organic and so doctors ignore them

Take care and I hope I haven't depressed you.  If you really work on your cystitis causes you should be able to get a lot b of control back

Joy,

I never replied to your message - so sorry.

Have bought the Buscopan, but haven't taken it yet, as well as a natural supplement which is specifically for women's bladder issues.......hopefully that will do the trick.  I also bought "10 parameter" urine test strips to save having to go the surgery for "false alarms".

My God you have had a hell of a time of it Joy, I really feel for you, and hope very much life is improving for you now - you're extremely brave, and I admire you for how far you've come despite everything you've been through.

I can't thank you enough for the information you gave me on the bladder and bowel issues.  My doctor is keeping "an eye on things", which is non-specific really, but I think she means on the hormonal change front.  In 3 months time I will have a follow-up FSH test.

Incidentally, what is the difference between a "functioning" as opposed to an "organic" disease?

Take care,

JC xx

Hi Junglechicken

Another thing that might help your cystitis, but it may be a long shot, is that you can have hormonal creams which you apply to the intimate area and can increase comfort, or indeed not hormonal gel creams such as Sylk (and other brands) which provide natural moisture to the intimate area.  Vaginal dryness is common throughout life, and more so with age, and these creams/gels can aid comfort. The urethra (entrance from bladder) is so near the ****** that what affects the ****** affects the urethra and vice versa.

It is all worth discussing with your GP and other therapists, especially your naturopath.

It is nothing to do with me where you are with contraception or even if it relevant but that can affect these issues too.

Yes, I have had it extremely difficult, but it is true that life goes on and it indeed does.  The difficulties have taught me a lot, and I feel so much better even though I find citalopram very difficult to get off.  An example of life going on is that my husband and I have just booked 4 nights/5 days in the Highlands of Scotland, neither of us has ever been, it is only a cheap coach trip, but I don't like grand, posh things, I like to live modestly.

It is clear that I have suffered cystitis/bladder issues at one stage of my life and it is awful, it takes over your whole thinking and well being.  Having that and SSRI issues is no picnic.  Bladder issues just niggle, niggle, niggle.

Organic illness is when something is wrong in the tissues of an organ, eg a tumour on the lung, or an ulcer in the stomach.  It is easy to diagnose and the treatment is standard and well understood.

Functional illness is when the organs appear to be fit and well physically but the sufferer is complaining that something is wrong in that area, and is getting symptoms, but the doctor can't find anything wrong.  Eg people with cystitis will be complaining of distress, frequency, perhaps pain when urinating or pain all the time, soreness etc but the doctors can find nothing wrong with the kidneys, bladder or urethra so they are then baffled and don't know what to do.

If you have vaginal thrush that can easily cause the symptoms of cystitis, the patient may then be treated with antibiotics by mistake thinking that it is a UTI, and then the thrush is made worse.  A vicious cycle is then set up.

Another thing you can do is change to a baby washing liquid like Fairy or another non bio, and use about half the quantity that the manufacturer recommends.  Some ladies go so far as to wear cotton while undies and wash them by boiling, but perhaps that is going a bit far.  Any chemical near your personal skin can cause problems.

I have waffled enough Junglechicken and rest assured I am absolutely fine, I am grateful to be where I am and for what I now have.  Life is a very sweet gift and I have a lovely story to end with.

We have a farm as my husband is a farmer and on Sunday we lost one of our hens, my husband and son have looked for it for 3 days now and today they found the hen stuck in some haybales and rescued it, other than being thirsty it seems fine. However, my husband says due to the stress it has suffered it won't be laying an egg for a long time.  This just shows the effects of stress on hens or us!

Take care Junglechicken.
