Thank you MaryDavid  :)

Its still sinking in that I'm actually OK and have nothing to worry about any more, other than getting a job.

He is a lovely man and is now semi-retired but runs clinics at the Chelsea & Westminster on Wednesdays and Saturday mornings.

My life has totally turned around in the space of 2 weeks.

I start an 8 week Mindfulness meditation course on Monday June 13th 2016.

This should help combat those spiralling negative thoughts about mental baggage and health anxiety.

"DrB" also mentioned that the muscle and joint aches and pains I experienced during my 3.5 month taper, and later on, were caused by too much adrenaline in my body.

I also wanted to say a HUGE thank you to Africa :) for all her kindness, patience and support.  There were too many times I thought I would die (according to "DrB" this is called "Catastrophisation"), and had she not put my mind at ease all of those times, I would have had many, many more meltdowns.

Africa, you WILL heal and you are well on your way.

I am just a bit confused about what you feel we have helped you with here, you attribute your 'success' to your psychiatrist and not a successful taper off psychiatric medication as a result of the help and support you have received here and elsewhere. That is the usual and customary criteria for stories in this forum.

Perhaps this note would be better served as an update in your own thread instead of here. When or if you ever decide to come off your drug/s and have been off for quite a while then you will be able to post a success story in this forum, telling us how you did it and how you are doing off medication.

What happened and how I arrived here: http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/4243-cymbaltawithdrawal5600-introduction/#entry50878

July 2016 I have decided to leave my story here at SA unfinished. I have left my contact information in my profile for anyone who wishes to talk to me. I have a posting history spanning nearly 4 years and 3000+ posts all over the site.

Thank you to all who participated in my recovery. I'll miss talking to you but know that I'll be cheering you on from the sidelines, suffering and rejoicing with you in spirit, as you go on in your journey.

It's been my pleasure JC! You have come such a long way and should be so proud of yourself.

Thank you for your positivity. I still have my ups and downs, good and bad days but hopefully I will get there too in the end.

JC, I'm so glad that you're feeling better and able to do things you want to, and also that you found a doc who acknowledges that these meds are not right for you and didn't push more or higher doses on you when your body doesn't like them! Also, that he supports you in tapering and going off at a rate where you feel comfortable!

It's so ironic how hard it can be to find doctors who understand these seemingly simple concepts. (I get doctors pushing meds on me that make my [other] medical problems worse or to double the dose of meds I have bad reactions to. Not my definition of science!!!)

I read on your intro thread that you hope to get off your last 2.5 mg in six months, and hope that will be possible! But please clarify if you are going to taper that last amount slowly, and please remember that sometimes people do better (long-term as well as short-term) when they do smaller drops or holds when necessary at the lower doses. Often when they listen to their bodies and are particularly careful about what size drops to do near the end of their taper, they not only feel better but also escape post-taper symptoms so many of us had due to not knowing enough about how these meds work.

I'm delighted at your good news, and feel free to ask questions  during the rest of your taper. I am pretty useless on the math of drops - especially end-of-taper drops. (I'm not only math-challenged lol, but also unfortunately raced through the end of my tapers. But there are some people here who are expert on that, and some excellent threads on the subject. I think you have a lot to look forward to, and that's fantastic! {{{{{{{{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}}}}}}} to you!

I was "TryingToGetWell" (aka TTGW) on paxilprogress. I also was one of the original members here on Surviving Antidepressants

I had horrific and protracted withdrawal from paxil, but now am back to enjoying life with enthusiasm to the max, some residual physical symptoms continued but largely improve. The horror, severe derealization, anhedonia, akathisia, and so much more, are long over.

My signature is a temporary scribble from year 2013. I'll rewrite it when I can.

Brandy,

Thank you so much for your kind words :0)

Yes, I should have clarified how the taper would work for the last 2.5mg.

In short, my psychiatrist "DrB" said, that once I had restored my inner equilibrium (achieved by doing a combination of mindfulness meditation, increased physical activity and with any luck a full-time job); then at some point I will forget to take the meds and my CNS won't notice that it hasn't had it. Along with a restored equilibrium, will be regular periods, no more hair loss or IBS/GERD etc.,

There was no mention of a taper off the 2.5mg, which will likely mystify a lot of people on here, but I think what "DrB" is saying; is that restoring my equilibrium will be more powerful and effective than the Cipralex by the time I am 6 months down the road, and that I will have stabilised my CNS naturally.

He also acknowledged that I had suffered from severe AD side effects and validated that I had been going through WD.

It is a big relief to have found a psych doc who does not push meds.

Had another fantastic Southwest SA group meeting yesterday with Africa and FunkyBaboon.

Feel very lucky to know them and share experiences. Looking forward to the next meeting in July (Bristol/Avon?).

Had an interview on Thursday so hope that will work out. Will help to have a routine in place.

Now I have to work on the mindfulness meditation and stop thinking so negatively, falling into my usual thought pattern.

That sounds great JC!  The group and the interview.

And a big me too........ on the getting to mindfulness state and difficulty with meditative morning exercises....... and frustration with the patterns.  Learning patience, patience and more patience with self and others.

Late 2023- gone to emeritus status, inactive, don't @ me, I can check who I've posted on, and I'm not really here like I used to be......thanks.

Started with psycho meds/psychiatric care circa 1988.  In retrospect, and on contemplation, situational overwhelm.

Rounding up to 30 years of medications(30 medication trials, poly-pharmacy maximum was 3 at one time).

5/28/2015-off Adderal salts 2.5mg. (I had been on that since hospital 10/2014)

12/2015---just holding, holding, holding, with trileptal/oxcarb at 75 mg. 1/2 tab at hs.  My last psycho med ever!  Tapered @ 10% every 4 weeks, sometimes 2 weeks to

2016 Dec 16 medication free!!

Longer signature post here, with current supplements.

Herb and alcohol free since 5/15/2016.  And.....I quit smoking 11/2021. Lapsed.  Redo of quit smoking 9/28/2022.  Can you say Hallelujah?(took me long enough)💜

Life is definitely better than it was.

I have to work hard at not falling into my negative thinking rut, even though the worst of the physical symptoms have now subsided.

Doc has prescribed anti-acid meds (Omeprazole 20mg - one daily) and Gaviscom (Pepto) - 2x 5ml spoonfuls at night for the Gerds.

She said that it can be attributed to diet but also age (and of course there are other causes). No further testing YET.

I have to go back in a month to advise if the meds have worked.

Also she wanted to knock this on the head before going ahead with any changes in my Cipralex dosage. Have advised her that I am still waiting for the CBT counselling and plan to see a physiatrist in London who specialises in Anxiety and depression who could also advise re: dosage.

Junglechicken, omeprazole and Gaviscom are not trivial drugs. Your gut needs stomach acid for proper digestion. Over time, use of acid blockers prevents absorption of important nutrients, such as vitamin B12.

They can also interfere with other drugs.

Yes, acidic burps can be caused by diet. Reducing intake of whatever is causing the indigestion is much better for your general health. Often dairy or coffee causes this problem.

Acid Reflux

That acid reflux pill may be causing your health problems

Digestive problems: Nausea, Diarrhea, Bloating, GERD

Vitamin B12 -- essential for mood, nervous system

I have very GOOD news to report.

The London based Psychiatrist, Dr CK Bridgett, has completely put my mind at ease about the physical symptoms I was experiencing, and I now have a renewed sense that I will recover fully in about 6 months as well as being off the medication.

He said that I will be off the meds completely in 6 months and DO NOT need to increase dose or switch medication.

This is a major breakthrough folks and he says that although meds work for some people, he is not a big advocate of them. He said that meds didn't suit me and I have reacted badly to them (after I explained WD symptoms and tapering schedule etc.,). He said that by increasing my running and horse riding, I.e. exercise; I will rapidly recover my equilibrium.

Isn't this what we have all been wanting to hear??

He has written a report to myself and GP, and is also recommending that I see a counsellor based in Taunton, Somerset UK who can advise re: meditation and mindfulness. Said counsellor is an ex-GP.

I will keep him updated re: my progress.

I've just read your topic in the Success Story forum Junglechicken - I am free thanks to "DrB"

I am glad you are feeling better and that you have found a psychiatrist you like.

While Dr. B. reassured you about many things, it does not sound like he is very knowledgeable about withdrawal syndrome and tapering.

Please continue to taper carefully off 2.5mg Cipralex.

What is your current daily symptom pattern? Please keep notes on paper about your symptoms, when you take your drugs, and their dosages.

Please put ALL the drugs you take in the Drug Interactions Checker http://www.drugs.com/drug_interactions.html

and copy and paste the results in this topic.

Good to hear you're feeling encouraged, Junglechicken.

The Success Story forum is for people who've gone off their drugs and recovered from withdrawal.

I have to disagree, strongly, with Dr. B., who sounds like a lovely person. If you've experienced withdrawal symptoms from reducing Cipralex before, you are prone to continue to experience withdrawal symptoms if you reduce Cipralex too fast. Being able to go off drugs does not depend on state of mind, it depends on how your body and nervous system react to the physical diminution of the drug in your system.

Practicing mindfulness meditation, physical exercise, and working to the extent you are able are all healthful pursuits that should make you feel better in a lot of ways. But your body is not going to tell you when you can simply stop take Cipralex, and if you go off it too quickly, you could hurt yourself.

If you are free from worry thanks to Dr. B., that is a reason to celebrate. But success in going off Cipralex is yet to come.

Hey Junglechicken,

How are things going?

What did you think of your first mindfulness session yesterday?

Funky

A convenient link to my introduction post

2003 Paroxetine (20mg I think) daily for 5 months due to extreme anxiety before final exams and stopped cold turkey. From 2003 onwards I have suffered with extreme anxiety, akathisia, severe muscle tension & digestive problems whenever off I'm off anti-depressants.

2007 Clonazepam (unsure of dose) - took approximately 100 tablets to try and self medicate for anxiety.

2007-09 Amitryptyline 10mg - was advised to take this "as and when needed" for anxiety.

April/May 2011 Diazepam 2mg - 2 week course followed by complete inability to sleep upon finishing so started Citalopram 40mg and I was able to sleep again.

Mid 2012 Diazepam 10mg - took approximately 100 tablets.

Mid 2012 Started Citalopram taper - 5mg reductions every month or two, severe withdrawal symptoms throughout taper.

Apr 2013 Completely off Citalopram and continued to have severe withdrawal.

Oct 2013 Completely fell to pieces mentally and alongside had a whole host of debilitating physical symptoms too. I went to the doctors who performed whole batteries of tests but had no idea what was wrong with me. They tried me on Sertraline and Amitryptyline to which I had terrible reactions which made symptoms worse. Eventually got put on Nortryptyline 25mg, which I tolerated and over 3 months withdrawal symptoms started to abate.

Mid 2014 discovered survivingantidepressants.org and hallelujah! I knew what was wrong with me - slow taper FTW!

Late 2014 & 2015 Reduced Nortryptyline 22.5mg & 20mg respectively in November & December of 2014. In 2015 Tapered Nortryptyline from 20mg to 10 mg in 2mg increments. Withdrawal symptoms with each dose reduction are debilitating but in a much different way to Citalopram.

I have to agree with Alto. If you had wd symptoms before, you'll probably have them now.

It doesn't matter how far you've come with your mind, your body will react if the drug is missing. Saying that your CNS won't notice is, well, a bit too hopeful.

Good luck and be careful!

CD off meds in July 2015, not on any medication since. Went through WD nightmare, now dealing with normal anxiety, but decided not to leave this forum yet because I want to support and give hope to others. ♡

"Dr B" has also intensively studied psychodermatology and has a very informative website. But he may not be on board with slow tapering of ADs and even dropping off that small amount is something the body will notice and likely rebel to (at?). Microdoses (such as those taken by our own Hudgens) are the ones where you can 'sneak off without the body hardly noticing' not often, but he even had some symptoms return afterward for a short time, if I remember correctly.

Lesson learned, slow down taper at lower doses. Taper no more than 10% of CURRENT dose if possible

  • 3 weeks later...

Very, very tired after long week of back to back job interviews.

One job offer so far - need to give decision on Monday.

Been bitten by lovely insects on the left side of my neck, now got a swollen lymph node (not much though). Have told doc who said to go to surgery if it gets worse/have concerns.

Off on vacation on Tuesday, Mum's birthday tomorrow and friends coming over on Sunday. Got to find the time to pack and get various presents for people.

Hey JC.  Thanks for the update. Glad to hear that it's going well . Where are you now with the taper ?  What dose are you on ? Still - 2.5mg?  How's the course going ?  :)    You sound busy  - enjoy .

Hi Ali,

Thank you for calling in on my thread :0)

Yes I'm still on 2.5mg, probably for another 5 months, then I will re-start my final taper.

I have reached week 3 of the Mindfulness course, and Week 6/9 of training to run 5k.

Had a relapse yesterday and this morning when I saw a large blue/black bruise above my right hip and freaked out. The swollen lymph node also scared me, and because of all the interviews and job stuff I have had going on, I got very upset yesterday and again this morning. My mindfulness skills seemed to have fallen by the wayside which felt like a step back in my healing.

Dose History: 19 Feb 2014 - Escitalopram 10mg daily June 2015 - Started taper, 5mg every other day July 2015 - 5mg every 2 days August 2015 - 5mg every 3 days September 2015 - 5mg every 4 days Sept 14th - Completed tapering, but at 7 weeks "drug free" I suffered serious WD symptoms as a consequence of "incorrect" tapering. Nov 25 2015 - Re-instated Cipralex @ 2.5mg daily. WD symptoms faded. Held at this dose and experienced "windows and waves". 12 Oct 2017 Reduced dose to 1.25mg. 13 Mar 2018 Reduced dose to 0.625mg (approx.). 16 April 2018 0mg. Windows and waves triggered by stress (IBS/reflux, headaches, sinus issues) Aug 2019 Mirena coil fitted 6 Jan 2020 MAJOR Wave hit 19 months following last dose (protracted WD).  Symptoms listed below Mar 2020 Mirena coil removal.

J.C.  I'm not sure what that means ?  Black / blue bruise ?  Where did that come from  ?  Are you in an abusive situation ?

Oh heck no Ali - I realised that I had walked into a security barrier by mistake on Thursday before an interview.  Guess I was nervous and in a hurry, but it was hip height, and I had been so stressed out I didn't notice the pain and then the subsequent bruise that emerged this morning.

My favorite is to walk into the sides of door frames, does a good job on the shoulders. Cortisone cream will help clear up the black & blue.

Best of luck with the job interviews and the 5K.

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks.  The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Final Dose 0.016mg.     Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017

Thank you BM, and for the cortisone cream tip :0) I didn't know that, and I have some as well - whoopee! You must be tall??!

Keeping my fingers crossed that the job thing works out as I have to give my decision re: one job offer on Monday. Timing is off, and the money as well as the actual job have to be right.

Running going well so far but need to lose some weight, lol.

JC - cortisone works, as does arnica gel if you want herbal rather than hormonal.

Have accepted a job locally (the not well paid one, lol).

The pay will cover our bills here in the UK but not the ones in Canada as well. This has been my dilemma among other things. When hubby gets a job we'll be fine, but won't have AS much as we had coming in when we were in Canada - love all this stuff, seriously.....

Made an absolute mess of the acceptance process, due to my indecision.....<groan>....

BUT I won't have the job pressure I had before, and can get my mojo back as well as get in more exercise by cycling to work.

  • 2 weeks later...

Got another job offer last week :0)

Will go with that one as better paid and hubby can get work more easily in that area.

The bruise has now vanished, but I had strange neck ache yesterday and part of today which freaked me out. I think it may have been caused by my having bent over an iPad for too long with no back/neck support.

Other than that, enjoying our time on holiday and getting our lives on track.

After queueing for 45 mins to get into one of the most popular fish restaurants in Lisbon, we ate an entire crab, lobster and plate of shrimp....

I would die happy if that was my last supper, lol.

Will have to make an appointment with an osteopath when we return to the UK as my neck still isn't right. Never had issues there before. Hubby has had lower back issues, so we can make it a joint appointment, lol. The joy of middle age I guess.

Nosedive nosedive :0(

Have been experiencing headaches which vary in intensity, sometimes pain behind the eyes, sharp pains in different parts of my brain etc., this has been going on for about 2 weeks now.

I am wondering if the cause was because I took my AD dose 1HR late on 2 or 3 occasions whilst on vacation.

What is even more alarming as I am not a headachy type person.....

Also, my jetliner tinnitus is back again - yay....

Headaches have completely stopped as of yesterday afternoon.

Got panicky last night re: weird pains across chest area and boobs. Do I ignore?

Made appt at asthma clinic on 16th.

Also agonising over whether we move to the southeast or stay in the southwest for work. Each have their pros and cons.
