Very nice update, Gridley.

The fact that your nervous system did so well shows the power of a slow and careful taper, so you're doing everything right.

I'm glad your trip went so well. :)

We just got back from Buenos Aires and it was good for me to get away from the house and focus on other things than myself.  It was my first trip to BA in withdrawal (the other trips I was on my meds) and I did notice a fair amount of anhedonia--lack of enjoyment and enthusiasm for sightseeing and museums that I'd savored before.  Still, I was glad to see I did have appreciation for some art in museums and much enjoyment of the wonderful food there.  I loved being in a big city again (I'm a city boy dealing with and sometimes with  living in the country and, to boot, the Third World.)  Very little anxiety on the trip.  Still some insomnia.

SkyBlue, I didn't see the Mafalda statues but heard that they are seated on park benches.  I did see lots of Mafalda backpacks in the stores.

I was very happy to see our three little dogs when we got back.

Hi Gridley,

Glad it sounds like a good trip overall. I think the enjoyment and enthusiasm will come back. It is however unnerving to say the least to experience the anhedonia.

Yes, I think I heard they are on park benches. Maybe I'll make it there one day.

I googled Mafalda backpacks and there is one of her screaming, "BASTA!!!!" (to non-Spanish speakers, this means "Enough!" or, "I've had it!!!)

Glad you're home safe and sound. <3

Thanks for dropping by, SkyBlue.  I'm confident the anhedonia will go away.  I had several glimmers of pleasure on the trip, which is an encouraging sign.  And, as I said, the food was wonderful.

I hope you are doing well.  Much healing to you!

I'm now almost eight months in to my Lexapro taper and have dropped 7.4 mg from 20 mg.  I feel it's going well and that the 2 1/2% per week Brassmonkey slide taper is working for me.  Once I get much lower I will slow down a bit. My WD normal consists of mild to moderate anxiety, especially in the mornings, and inability to sleep past around 4:30 a.m. Even so, I'm getting 6-7 hours uninterrupted sleep per night.  I have some anhedonia.  Few physical symptoms except mild tinnitus and occasional burning feet  (These symptoms may not be due to the Lexapro taper at all but rather to Lorazepam interdose anxiety or my pre-SA Imipramine taper or a combination of all three).  In any case, the symptoms, while unpleasant, are tolerable.

I'm also continuing my taper of Enerphos phosphatidyl serine (cortisol reducer) since it has stopped helping me get back to sleep.  I have noticed an increase in morning anxiety as my dosage drops but this usually abates by noon.  I read somewhere--don't know if it's true--that you shouldn't stay on a cortisol reducer for longer than 9 months, and I'm almost at that point.  That makes sense to me: I don't know how good an idea it is to suppress cortisol on a long term basis.  Plus Keep It Simple seems like a good practice in WD.

Healing to all of you.

Today is the day I normally drop 2 1/2% Lexapro, but I have noticed an uptick in my symptoms (or, put another way, greater than normal crappytude in my WDnormal--increased anxiety and ruminations).  So, I am going to hold for another week at my last week's dose to let things stabilize a bit and to see how I feel in a week.

Also, I stopped my rapid taper of Enerphos phosphoserine and will put if off for a while so I can better gauge my Lexapro reductions without wondering whether it's the Enephos or the Lexapro taper causing the symptoms.

Gridley, thank you for writing out what you are doing because it's so important that we pay attention to the role that supplements play during withdrawal.

Holding the Enerphos steady to put the spotlight on Lexapro sounds like a very good plan. I hope the crappytude (I like that term) goes away and you get some peace of mind.

Please let us know how you do.

Thanks, Shep.  Since holding for another week on my Lexapro instead of dropping my usual 2 1/2%, I've been feeling better and even had a window of calm all morning yesterday.  I had debated pushing on through (it was the fourth week and I would've had my regular hold next week) but I made the right decision.

Today is the last day of my regular 2-week hold of Lexapro and tomorrow I will drop 2 1/2% to 12.2 mg.

I'm starting to see what my current WDnormal is.  My sleep is fair, falling asleep with no problem at 10:00, waking at 3:30 or 4:00 and unable to get back to sleep.

Mild to moderate anxiety kicks in soon, which I understand is cortisol spikes and is a very common WD symptom.  This usually, though not always, fades by mid-to-late morning, though sometimes it continues into the afternoon. (There's a helpful post by Step this morning about eating a high-protein, low-sugar breakfast soon after arising to help with this).

Other early morning symptoms are fearful ruminations in which all aspects of my life are charged with anxiety when I think of them.

I'm very sensitive to stressors.  I keep a record of my symptoms, with 0 indicating no or negligible symptoms and 5 for severe.  Usually I stay in the 0-to-3 range but

these past two weeks I learned that our best friends and also our long-time employee are both leaving Ecuador.  This sent me in the 4 and even 5 range on a few days.  On days with few stessors (such as going into the village) I do much better, with 0's and 1's.

I'm happy to report I had another window of lovely calm this week amidst all the turbulence--lasted 2 1/2 hours!

I wish all of you peace, hope and healing.

Gridley

Hi, Gridley.

Nice to read you're able to navigate the murky waters of withdrawal and find Withdrawal Normal.

I'm sorry your long-time friends and employees are leaving. That is definitely stressful.

Please keep us updated as you make your next reduction. I hope the periodic windows continue.

Except for an increase in anxiety as I prepared for a trip to tell long-time fellow expats goodbye as they return to their native land, Australia, I'm doing well with the latest drop in Lexapro to 11.9.

I had a bit of a scare when we arrived and I realized I had left behind all my meds.  My resourceful wife managed to get me a prescription for Lorazepam (no easy task!), so all I missed was my nighttime Imipramine with no lasting ill effects.  The next morning a shuttle delivered my meds and all was well.

I'm feeling very calm back here snug at home.  Next 2 1/2% drop this Tuesday.

I'm glad your home and doing well, Gridley, especially after a scary experience. It also shows you were doing so well before you went on your trip, that your meds were the last thing on your mind! Best of luck on your upcoming drop.

I tapered another 2 1/2% Lexpro, down to 11.3 mg.  My symptoms remain tolerable: morning anxiety, plus stressor-produced anxiety, averaging 5-6 hours sleep at night.  A new symptom is irritability, also some dizziness.  One stressor has been a lingering cold, which I'm treating with colloidal silver, vitamin C and oregano oil.  Amazing how a cold can ramp up WD symptoms.

Next week is my two-week hold at 11.3.

Healing to all.

Hi Gridley:

I just read your signature. Looks like we are both in Lexapro hell! Does it or did it ever make you nauseous? That's been my only symptom.

You also take lorazepam? I take Xanax, which is about the same. I take 3mg a day. I tapered off Valium quite a while ago.

What is Imipramine? I've never heard of that, and do you still take it?

I take phenegran or zofran when my nausea is so severe, I can't function. I've taken it a couple of times since all of this has been happening to me.

I really appreciate you thinking of me.

Take care,

Frogie xx

PREVIOUS medications and discontinuations: Have been on medications since 1996.

Valium, Gabapentin, Lamictal, Prilosec and Zantac from 2000 to 2015 with a fast taper by a psychiatrist.

Liquid Lexapro Nov, 2016 to 31-March, 2019 Lexapro free!!! (total Lexapro taper was 4 years-started with pill form)

---CURRENT MEDICATIONS:Supplements:Milk Thistle, Metamucil, Magnesium Citrate, Vitamin D3, Levothyroxine 25mcg, Vitamin C, Krill oil.

Xanax 1mg 3x day June, 2000 to 19-September, 2020 Went from .150 grams (average weight of 1 Xanax) 3x day to .003 grams 3x day. April 1, 2021 went back on 1mg a day. Started tapering May 19, 2023. July 28, 2023-approximately .87mg. Dr. fast tapered me at the end and realized he messed up. Prescribe it again and I am doing "slower than a turtle" taper.

Frogie,

Very nice to hear from you.  Lexapro has never made me nauseous though my appetite is not great.  My main WD symptoms are insomnia, anxiety and anhedonia--not much enthusiasm or energy for anything.  Since I'm on three drugs, I'm not sure what's causing what.

Imipramine is an old (pre-SSRI) tricyclic antidepressant that I was put on years ago to lessen the pain of colitis.  I started tapering it before I found SA, then learned from SA that is was a brake (sedating)  and that I should've tapered the Lexapro first, since it's an accelerator (stimulator)..  So I halted the taper of Imipramine at 25 mg and started in on the Lexapro.  Symptoms are tolerable though certainly not pleasant, especially the anhedonia.  I'm guessing I have maybe a year or more to go on the Lexpro, then I'll need to decide which to taper next, the Lorazepam or the Imipramine.  I have to keep remembering, one day at a time.

I live in a tiny village in Ecuador (no compounding pharmacies) but the Gemini 20 scale has worked so far for cutting my dosages.

Sorry about your nausea.  I'm glad you have had several periods without it and only had to use the meds a couple of times.   And sorry about your series of misfortunes--let's hope they are at an end.

Prayer and Light again to your beloved Blackie.  We have three rescue dogs from the streets, Humphrey, Papa and Chiqui.  They are my children.

Healing to you, Frogie.  We will make it to the other side.

Hi Gridley:

Thanks for answering me. I live in a very small town, 600 people. There is a small grocery store, a gas station with a convienience store in it and a hardware store. I moved from my home city (born and raised) to here to be with my fiancé who got a job out here. It's awful. People are so rude and you can't make friends at all. Well, I guess I shouldn't say at all. I have 1 friend out here across the street but we only talk once a week or so. My fiancé said hopefully in a year and a half or so we can move home.

I have no motivation or energy to do anything either. Especially with my Brownie. I don't want to leave her sight. But I know I should be doing something instead of sitting with her watching tv.

I have tapered off of everything except Lexapro and Xanax. Lexapro makes me sick the 1st few days I taper, but I haven't even thought about tapering until my life gets back to "normal". It's been almost 2 months.

I was using a scale for tapering Lexapro, then my dr prescribed liquid. It's so much easier to use. I just draw the correct amount into a dosage syringe, and put it in a little cup, put some apple juice in it and drink it. I don't know what I'll do with the Xanax. Guess get the scale back out. I have that exact scale. It's a nice one.

Hopefully I won't be nauseous anymore then.

It's nice to talk with someone in the same situation as me.

We will be able to help and encourage each other. That's what I need the most. If you want to.

I actually had to use a compounding pharmacy for one of Brownies medicines. The vet called in the prescription and they mailed it to me. We only have 1 pharmacy where I live 16 miles away and they didn't have her medicine. But my insurance won't cover a compounding pharmacy for my medicine, but they cover the liquid Lexapro, so that is fine with me.

I've talked your ear off. Sorry. Hope you are doing well.

Take care,

Frogie xx

That would be great to help and encourage each other.

I wouldn't beat yourself up about not doing anything.. I read somewhere on SA about how much energy our brains are using in healing.  So I don't think there's anything wrong with just "hanging out" on the sofa with Blackie.  I can do mild walks.  Anything else is too much, for right now.

Yes, sometimes a small town can be very cliquish. I really prefer a larger city but I tell myself every day, make the best of it.   Plus, for me at least, WD makes me less comfortable talking to others and generally I'm happy to be home.  We live on top of a mountain, which is very tranquil, so looking at the bright side it is a great place for healing.  Speaking of friends, two couples who are our best friends are moving very soon, one couple is returning to Australia and the other is going to Spain.  I do try to avoid stressors but some, like this, are unavoidable.

I hope you're doing well.

Thanks... I just have no energy to do anything lately. Especially with Brownie. Once in a while I'll get the energy to sweep the hard floors, but that's about it. I do laundry on Sunday's though. My brain must really be healing.

You are lucky, even though you live in a small town, to have the mountains. I miss them so much. All I see right now are wheat and corn fields, cows and tumble weeds. I really miss my city. We don't even have stores to shop. We have to drive 2-3 hours to shop, so we do most of it online.

I look forward to helping each other and encouraging each other. We will make it. :)

Lexapro taper update:  I'm in my first week of hold at 11.3 mg on my BM Slide 2 1/2% per week taper.  I was doing well at 11.9 but once I dropped to 11.6 my symptoms, mostly anxiety but also loss of appetite, irritability and feeling weird, have worsened.  This tells me I am either going too fast or need to hold longer or both.

So I'm going to hold here at 11.3 for a while, until, as Baroquep said, I can "reclaim joy" or at least equilibrium.  I've been reading about forgetting the calendar and though I wanted to get lower I will heed the advice of SA and my body.  I will also consider smaller cuts than 2 1/2% per week.

Hi, Gridley.  I'm sorry you're having some additional symptoms, but I noticed you posted the above about a cold about a week ago. Are you still battling the cold?

Perhaps holding will allow you to completely heal up from the cold and you'll have an easier go of it going forward.

The cold has pretty much cleared up, best I can tell.  I'm going to hold for a while then reassess my rate of cuts and length of holds.  I know that 10% a month (or 2 1/2% per week with a 2-week hold) isn't written in stone.

Gridley:

Hopefully with a nice long hold you will feel better.

I know I have to hold longer, or it catches up to me.

Take care,

Frogie xx

Last night I had an epsom salt/bakig soda full-body soak.  I used 2 cups of baking soda (more than usual) and slept much better and had a day day without any anxiety.  Definitely worked.  I plan to do it every other night.  Sometimes you think there's never going to be relief and then it comes.

Hi Gridley--  I'm glad the baths are working and helping you sleep.  Might I suggest limiting yourself to every other night.  It's possible to get too much of a good thing with epsom salts.  When it happens anxiety and panic really ramp up and it's really easy to try and treat it with more salts so it spirals out of control.  I seen it happen to several of the other members here.  Otherwise enjoy.

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks.  The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Final Dose 0.016mg.     Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017

Tomorrow we leave for a 12-day vacation and I'm going to continue my hold at 11.3 during the trip, which will total a 5-week hold.  Travel is a mixed blessing for me--change is a stressor but is also good for me.  I should be ready to continue my taper when we get back.

I won't be taking my computer so will not be in touch for a couple of weeks.

Healing to all of you.

Gridley I look forward to hearing about your trip. I definitely understand about travel being a mixed blessing!! Hope all goes well.

2020: After 18+ years (entire adult life) on Paxil, a dangerous doctor-led "taper" in 2015, and four years tapering off the last 1 mg thanks to SA and the Brassmonkey slide,

I AM COMPLETELY FREE OF PAXIL! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Forever.

2021: Began conservative, proper, CNS-respecting taper of Zoloft, led by the only expert on me -- me. Making own liquid. 5-10% plus holds.

2022: Holding on Zoloft for now. Current dose 47 mg. Hanging in, hanging on. Severe protracted PAWS, windows and waves. While I may not be doing "a lot" by outside standards, things are graaaaadually getting better

Yoga (gentle to medium); walks; daily breath practice; nutrition, fruits/veg; nature; water; EastEnders (lol); practicing self-compassion, self-care; boundaries; connection; allowing feelings; t r u s t ing that I, too, will heal. (--> may need to be reminded of this.)

I just got back last night from 11 days in Buenos Aires. I wanted to go to a city I was familiar and comfortable with.   We didn't do a lot, which is the way I like it--I do much better without stressors.  As soon as I arrived, the anxiety dropped away, I think from the distraction and being freed from even the minor stressors of my life in Ecuador.  Mostly we just hung out, walked around, ate good food and walked in the nearby Botanical Garden, which has plants from all the biozones of the world.  It was only when the return journey loomed that the anxiety returned.  We live sort of in the middle of nowhere and it's not easy to get here.   I used the Claire Weeks acceptance of the anxiety and that helped.  A good trip but I'm happy to be home where I feel the safest.  Today I'm just hanging out with the three dogs (who were overjoyed to see us) and not even venturing out to the village.

I held at 11.3 mg Lexapro for 5 weeks before and during the trip and tomorrow will do a 2 1/2% drop for a week.  It's hard to tell whether I felt calm on the trip due to the hold or the trip, especially since I have the complicating factors of possible WD from Imipramine and Lorazepam.  Anyway, I think it's good for me to do a Lexapro hold from time to time to let things catch up.

My friend Sky, thanks for checking in.  I hope you are having a great day.   Much Light and healing to you as we make our way onward.

Best wishes for all.
