Gridley -

Thank you for responding to my post on Frogie's page.  I want to thank you for sharing the link for the skin issues.  I read it and it does seems that itching and hives can be part of withdrawal.  It is frustrating to still be getting new symtpoms after being off Prozac for 27 months.

Discontinued Fluoxetine cold turkey after taking it for 12 years. Stopped taking Fluoxetine in August 2015.

My current withdrawal symptoms: Itchy skin, smell hallucination, hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, and anxiety.

Synthroid for hypothyroidism.

02bhappy,

I know it is frustrating to get new symptoms this far out,  but just think, you are over two years off and so much of it is behind you.

I do remind myself that I have come a long way and that I am so much better off being off these medicines.  Sometimes it is hard to remind myself when I am in the mindst of scratching and breaking out in hives.

Hi Gridley:

Wanted to stop by and say hi.

I posted on my thread what's going on.

I'll be glad the holidays are over.

Hope you are doing well.

Take care,

Frogie xx

The last two weeks have contained considerable stressors.  Our long-term tenants moved out as of this week and with them goes a considerable chunk of our income.

We'll be able, I'm reasonably sure, to get new tenants though how soon I don't know.  In the meantime comes the repair work.

I'm down to 9.25 mg Lexapro but I believe I'm going to have to hold here for a while.  Over the last couple of weeks I've seen the appearance of several physical symptoms I haven't had before: hip joint pain, flu-like muscle aches and diarrhea.  The diarrhea requires some psychological dealing-with (especially not going into fear-of-the-fear) because it is reminiscent of my bad-old-days of ulcerative colitis, which hasn't troubled me in the three years since I had my colectomy and J-pouch surgery.

I'm taking low doses of Imodium and hoping it doesn't disturb my system.

Two steps forward, one back.  I need to settle into my turtle mode and take the long, long view.  This is my life project now and for the foreseeable future.

Good news is that the 1 mg Melatonin has been helping with sleep and I'm getting around 7 hours a night.

Hi, Gridley. What time of day do you take Lexapro? When do you get diarrhea?

I take the Lexapro at 10 A.M.  I have the diarrhea throughout the day and night, off and on, no real pattern that I can discern. This has just started this past Tuesday, perhaps due to the stressor of our renters moving out.

I've decided not to take the Imodium.  It doesn't really help and I don't want to add any new meds to the mix.

Update: down to 8.8 mg Lexapro with no significant problems.  In fact, in the last three weeks my anxiety and insomnia symptoms have lessened.   I'm still dealing with anhedonia and apathy but basically making it okay.

Healing and hope to all.

Great update, Gridley. Always good to read about decreasing symptoms during a taper. Shows there is healing along the way.

That's awesome, my friend!

I do hope the anhedonia lifts. Remember the theory (easier said than done) that apathy during WD is possibly protecting us from the emotional turmoil our brains are going through as they rebuild.

Glad the anxiety and insomnia have lessened a bit.

2020: After 18+ years (entire adult life) on Paxil, a dangerous doctor-led "taper" in 2015, and four years tapering off the last 1 mg thanks to SA and the Brassmonkey slide,

wantrelief,

I too have anhedonia and apathy, and I deal with it much the way AliG does.  I don't try to push through it and I don't feel guilty because I'm not doing more. You are doing plenty getting through the day. Just resting is doing something if that's what your body, which is going through so much, needs.  Be kind to yourself.  I have read on this site that the apathy and anhedonia can be like a protective child to buffer you from too much activity and involvement as you heal.  It was pass, don't know when, but it will.

Gridley

Thank you for your post to me regarding anhedonia and apathy.  It is good to know that you do as AliG does and don't try to push through it, nor feel guilty about not doing more.  They are very distressing symptoms as it makes me feel like I am not me at all, like I can't even think of anything I would like to do let alone want to do it anyway.....so strange.  But I am hopeful that one day they will pass as well as this is not our natural state.

Congratulations on the progress you are making with your taper, Gridley - you are doing great!

-1/06 - 3/07 Cymbalta. Fast taper (essentially CT); withdrawal symptoms after 4 mos (didn't realize was WD)

-10/07: 100 mg Zoloft; 1 mg Klonopin - tapered off Klonopin after 4 mos. Several unsuccessful slow tapers of Zoloft; went up and down in dose a lot

-Spring 2013 back on 1 mg Klonopin to counter WD symptoms; switched over 5-6 mos from Zoloft to 35 mg citalopram
-Two attempts at slow tapering citalopram, always increased dose due to WD; also increased Klonopin to 1.25 mg in 2014, then to 1.5 mg in 2015

Thanks for writing, LRH.  The diarrhea is much better, settled down nicely.  I thank God I had the surgery, which was rough, but I'm much better now.  I can''t imagine facing WD plus ulcerative colitis.  Basically I am cured of UC.

HI, Gridley!

How are you doing? Your words of encouragement on my thread are so kind.

How is life on the mountain?  I have mountains around me, too.  I live in foothills.  It's lovely especially right now as we've had a little rain and the grass is green.  That will last until early April (I hope) and then everything will turn brown.  I'm hoping to go out and enjoy the green today.  Take care, Rosetta

Congrats Gridley, you are plugging away on your taper and still improving, that is awesome! Just wanted to stop by to say thanks for all you have done for me, hope all continues to go well with you. I reread my thread and laughed at myself and how many times I essentially asked you the same question about "is holding the right thing to do?" Over and over again and you so kindly reassured me over and over again that it was and that it would get better. So thanks for not loosing patience with me in the beginning when I was annoying. Funny how withdrawal can essentially turn a 34YO successful businessman, husband, and father, into a scared 5YO begging for reassurance from strangers on the internet...funny or scary?!?

Update:  I heading into my regular two-week hold after 4 weeks of 2 1/2% drops, now at 8.2mg Lexapro.  I continue to feel pretty good, certainly better than 2-3 months ago.  Looking back on a year ago, I'm much much better.  Almost no cortisol spike-anxiety in the morning.  In fact, I can lay in after I wake up.  Sleep is reasonably good, 6 or even 8 hours, aided I think my 1 mg Melatonin and, I'm sure, my brake drugs (Imipramine and Lorazepam) that I'm waiting to taper after Lexapro.

SA's advice to taper the activating Lexapro first was a good one.  I even entertain the idea that I'll get even better as I drop further, though I'm aware of the need for caution at the lower doses.

Brassmonkey's slide taper has worked well for me, and since the first of the year I really haven't noticed any increased symptoms as I drop.

My log for the last four weeks (grading each a.m. and p.m.) has almost all "0"s (best possible score, few symptoms, all tolerable) with a few 1's.  I'm not saying I'm tip-top, just doing pretty well considering.  The anhedonia lifts from time to time, and I've felt a few glimmers of interest in the garden and have even ventured out there to do a little work.  A few days lately were what I would call near-windows, not exactly pleasure but close enough.

Hope and healing to all of you.

It's gone smoothly.  I never know what I'm getting with these South American meds, but I haven't noticed any difference.  Tomorrow is the last day of the crossover, then I can begin tapering again.  I generally feel somewhat okay at home but I'm a bit agoraphobic about going down to the village and that usually produces some anxiety but no different than with the American Lexapro.  Thanks for asking.

Hello Gridley,

I see you are doing quite well with your taper. Great work.

I wanted to reach out to you regarding your use of Enerphos.  I am considering its use since I am having a terrible time with early morning awakenings.  I see you had been taking 100 mg per night, but the product I see for sale does not have the weight per capsule.  Are you splitting the capsules yourself, or am I not finding the right product?  Also did you find you initially had a bad reaction or was it positive from the get go.  Any advice regarding this is much appreciated!

Thank you.

Hello, Survivor,

The Enerphos brand I used was from T.E. Neesby.  On the bottle the ingredients show a total of 470mg for two capsules.   One capsule, then, is 235mg.   Yes, I split 1 capsule and took it with an Omega when I awoke with the cortisol spikes.  I never had a bad reaction.  It helped from the start and continued working for a while, then stopped doing anything, and I eventually stopped taking it.

This product is a later version of earlier products, one of which was called Seriphos.  There's lots of discussion on the Internet about the relative merits of all these versions but hard to get any hard information.  I recall reading somewhere (couldn't find it when I tried again to find it) that the maximum time you should take it is three months, but then I read nine months.  I emailed to manufacturer about this but received no reply.  I took it for nine months.  Here's a link:

The main ingredient in Enerphos is phosphatidyl serine.  It reacts poorly with antidepressants and antihistamines causing their affects to increase.  Testing shows that it is "possibly safe" to take for up to six months, but its effectiveness drops off and stops rather quickly.

"Enerphos is the phosphate esters of the serine and ethanolamine that are present in the form of calcium magnesium salts".  It appears to be a refined version of something we already recommend. I don't think the refining will gain us much over the calcium magnesium that we already know works.

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks.  The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Final Dose 0.016mg.     Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017

Gridley, thank you for the details.  I had taken a similar product from Interplexus and I think I started to high - I felt it was alerting.  From the threads on SA, its effectiveness is nebulous, so I was happy to find your use was positive.  I don't know what I will decide to do; I need relief, so I may continue to experiment ...

Brassmonkey,  Thank you for weighing in.  I did not know this.  I really need relief from the cortisol spikes, and was hoping this could provide some relief.  Sigh.

Tomorrow is the last day of the crossover, then I can begin tapering again.

Hi Gridley, how's it going, and have you begun tapering again? Hope it's going well.

2020: After 18+ years (entire adult life) on Paxil, a dangerous doctor-led "taper" in 2015, and four years tapering off the last 1 mg thanks to SA and the Brassmonkey slide,

I AM COMPLETELY FREE OF PAXIL! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Forever.

2021: Began conservative, proper, CNS-respecting taper of Zoloft, led by the only expert on me -- me. Making own liquid. 5-10% plus holds.

2022: Holding on Zoloft for now. Current dose 47 mg. Hanging in, hanging on. Severe protracted PAWS, windows and waves. While I may not be doing "a lot" by outside standards, things are graaaaadually getting better
