Another grim day of black depression. I've 14 days left of my Seroquel taper and looking forward to starting to taper my Valium as I'm sure it's sustaining my depression. Hopefully I'll have a little more in the way of energy once the Seroquel effects have worn off.

Sorry to hear this Steve. Have been thinking of you. You’re doing great getting off the seroquel. I know it’s a slog. Here and cheering you on and holding your hand. Nikki

Hi Staz, Just dropping by to let you know I haven't forgotten about you! You have probably read it's been a little tougher for me lately.  As it has been for you.  All we can do is keep putting one foot in front of the other and keep, our heads above water.  Is there anything you can do to distract yourself?  I find listening to podcasts very helpful (usually in bed!).  From my own experience it is very difficult to think clearly, let alone have any energy when taking seroquel, especially when taken in unison with diazepam.  You have so many chemicals contributing to your feelings of depression.  Just try to remember this does not 'define' who you are nor does any 'diagnosis' pulled from the DSM.  I think I will refer to it from now on as the "Deceptive Sigmatising Manual" ...much more appropriate 😉 K

Thanks Kristine,

I appreciate your advice. Putting one foot in front the other is the only way forward. Distraction I find very difficult as I've hardly any energy or enthusiasm for things I once loved (photography) . I've not picked up my camera in many months. Sorry your having a bad time. You're right about the diagnosis. My shrink is an idiot.

Hey Staz, just to say hi and good wishes. I know what you mean about enthusiasm going. I was learning trumpet, barely pick it up now. I know being enthusiastic about something would help, looking forward to learning, doing stuff I like. But everything is meaningless or even stressful.

Current daily meds. Citalopram 2.5mg morning. Diazapam 1.5mg evening, Propanalol 40mg split 4x10mg throughout day.

Recent meds. Fluoxetine 20mg began 24th Nov 2017, CT on 4th December on medical advice due to bad Akathisia. Citalopram 10mg began on 13th Dec 2017, tapered to 2.5mg by 20th Dec 2017 on medical advice. Diazapam 2mg began on 6th Dec 2017 cut to 1.5 mg on 26th Dec. Propanalol 40mg began on 13th Dec. Zopiclone 3.75 mg began 13th December, used maybe 5 times then quit.

Previous history. Tricyclics, Fluoxetine or Citalopram for periods of 6mo to 2yrs over last 25 years. Probably 5 yrs in total. No significant ill effects.

Hi Nikki,

Yes I'm doing 1mg a day so 11mg left to go now so the end is in sight and hopefully not too much in the way of w/d's.

I'm getting some odd nights of broken sleep but other nights are fine and I'm a bit flu like with no energy but I can cope with that.

Yes it sucks not having motivation or interest and makes the days drag when you are tapering especially. Also the time of year and the freezing weather doesn't help either.

Wishing you both well

That’s good to hear, that wds are manageable enough.

Pretty low and fearful today. Daunted I think and just ‘off’. Low level panic. Exhausted too. The constant agitation/ restlessness in my head and body. Get cabin fever being stuck at home. Anyway, didn’t mean to write about me!

Sorry to hear that Steve.

I’m home alone in the daytimes too so can always message.

Just don’t know what to do with myself. Distraction is hard when my head and body won’t settle in one place for very long. Doing chores but missing the fulfilment of more enriching things. Like I think you said in previous posts. I think you mentioned photography. I love that too. Have managed to photograph a few things using my phone just from my house like the trees or sky. I then might fiddle with them using photo apps just to do something creative. But it’s just a little distraction. Most days I don’t feel the interest or connection to do any of it.

Hoping the day improves for you too. Nikki xxx

Staz, please please please slow down your Seroquel taper. One milligram (1 mg) per day is WAY TOO FAST.  Every person on this site who has rapid tapered off a neuroleptic medication or an "anti-psychotic" has experienced severe withdrawal symptoms.

One member posted that she didn't notice the effect of a decrease until the third week after the change.  You haven't let enough time lapse to discover how your body and CNS (central nervous system) react to dose decreases.

Drugs like Seroquel often have an unfortunate side effect of making a person impulsive and extremely determined.  You may be going through that right now -- you are counting the days until you're off the "S".

I'm concerned that your determination to get off the drug is going to set you back months -- you may find yourself being prescribed "S" again or even admitting yourself for treatment in hospital. The best way to avoid these predictable negative outcomes is to hold steady at your current dose (or possibly to increase to and hold at a dose between your current and original doses) for at least 6 weeks. Please give yourself a chance to get off Seroquel safely the first time.

This is not medical advice. Discuss any decisions about your medical care with a knowledgeable medical practitioner.

I'm beginning to think I'll slow down or hold for a while. I did sit at 25mg for a month without anything too bad in the way of w/d's so maybe that would be a better approach. My shrink wanted me off 25mg every 2 weeks and it's taken me since August to reduce to my current dose.

Thanks Scallywag.

Be prepared for symptoms. It's very likely that 14 days of 1mg decreases will catch up with you.  I'd be inclined to returning to 18-20 mg on my next dose in an attempt to reduce the number and intensity of symptoms.

Hi Staz

I am now following you.  I have quickly gleaned over your story.  I tried 100's times to get off most of my psychiatric drugs before finding a way through, I did one at a time though.

I am impressed that in 1996 approx. you got off dothiepin with no problems - I found that very difficult, so there is a lot of hope for you.

I would avoid ECT if you can, I eventually pulled out of terrible depressions without it.  You cant have it with diazepam (valium) or any of the anticonvulsants as they prevent it from working.  ECT works by inducing a fit in the brain.  It can be a life saver, so I am told, but it is a very controversial procedure at best.

Jan 2023 to July 2023 250mg quetiapine

Tapered off quetiapine again over 2 months - now weight problem

I'm going to stay where I am Scallywag as I managed my way down from 150mg to 25mg without any major w/d's over 4 months. I did get some but nothing unbearable. I still then have the option of increasing if I need to as up dosing for an event that may not happen doesn't sit comfortably with me atm. I've managed C/T's from escitalopram 5mg and come down quickly from Lyrica so I understand all about the pitfalls and how much i can cope with. My script is now for 25mg per day and I've plenty of spares should things go wrong. So I'll sit where I am for a while and see what happens. Hopefully things will be as manageable as they have been so far with seroquel.

I'll post any issues I get over the coming weeks and thanks for your advice.

Cheers

Staz

Hi Joy,

First time around dothiepin was a breeze. A real non event but my CNS has now been so brutalized by psych meds and I've a few more miles on the clock now. i'm not volunteering for ECT and in the UK they will give it with benzos but not anticonvulsants. The success rate for those on benzos is low though and the long term effects on memory and cognitive skills are at risk as they have to use a higher voltage to induce a seizure.

I'm picking off my meds one at a time and trying to get off of seroquel right now as you have probably read. I tend to feel any reduction within 2-3 days so I'm mindful of this and the speed of taper. I want to start tapering my benzo as I believe that's the sustaining the black depression I have but I'll need a while clear of Seroquel before I attempt it so I'm as stable as I can be from the beginning.

Cheers

I felt slightly more clear headed today. After lunch sitting in front the fire I had some increase in anxiety but i gradually started to doze of to sleep and woke from a semi sleep state to a horrible feeling. Total exhaustion but some fear with it as well. A really weird feeling that was quite disturbing at the same time. I feel like i could go to bed now and sleep the entire night.

Hey Staz. I saw that you mention "treatment resistant depression" a few times. I read another take on those three words (can't remember the link, brain fog). They should really be "treatment caused depression" or "treatment exacerbated depression". The drugs do this, or they take a small depression/anxiety and make it far far worse. Especially the switching cocktail of polypharmacy.

All the best. Following your journey as always.

Hi Kesh and thanks for the post.

I think your take on the situation is bang on the mark. what started out as moderate depression has driven me to the edge at times and none of the psychiatrists are willing to admit any wrongdoing or responsibility.

I reject their labels and I'm damned if I'm going to give in to this.

Good luck to you my friend

Hi Staz,  This is good news.....changes are happening. What you describe is similar to some of my experiences.  I find many experiences are so difficult to put into words because they are so weird.  I looove sitting in front of a fire!  I hope you have managed to sleep the entire night by the time you read this.

Wow, Kesh was spot on! Love that description. I think TRD is a way of shifting the attention away from the medications and blaming the patient. You have a fighting spirt Staz! I've got your back ☺️ K

Hi Steve

Glad to hear you felt a bit more clear headed.

I get that horrible feeling if I doze off. They call them ‘toxic naps’ so I’ve heard! Coming round feeling weird, fearful, disconnected. Just to let you know it’s a common thing in wd anyway.

How are you doing today?

My mental symptoms are up so feeling generally weird.

Hi Nikki,

Still a bit more clear headed with low level anxiety.

Thanks for the info on toxic naps. I thought it was just me that experienced them and you describe the feeling so well.

Sorry your not feeling so good. I hope you feel a bit better soon.

I think my anxiety is due to my seroquel taper tbh so just one of those things I'll have to put up with for a while I guess.

It’s great you’re still feeling a bit more clear headed!

Glad you know you’re not alone in that nap thing.

Thanks, getting weird ocd type stuff. Might see if there’s anything on here about it. It comes under the anxiety umbrella.

Yes no doubt it’s the taper causing your anxiety so just know it’s got a cause and will lessen again. Xx

Hi Nikki,

It's odd you are getting ocd type feelings. I'm not sure if it's anxiety related or just the way these drugs mess with our minds.

My anxiety is definitely seroquel related. Also I'm starting a voluntary job tomorrow so I'm a bit apprehensive about that but I feel I need some distraction to help my recovery. Keeping my mind on something different than my symptoms and self checking myself will help me hopefully.

I can't see my anxiety reducing until I'm off seroquel as I've dropped my dose quit rapidly over the last few weeks. Then it will take me a few months to fully recover. Then on to diazepam.

How are you feeling now?

Steve

Hi Steve

The ocd stuff I had quite badly in the early days of the cts. I’ve had it mildly in my life but this is bizarre and must be drug related.

I went downhill early evening after I was hit by my fatigue/drugged thing and couldn’t move for two hours. I came round from semi sleep in panic and claustrophobia desperate to get out the house. Feeling like I’d go mad if I didn’t! Scary feelings.

I’m now just mildly anxious.

That’s so good about your volunteering job! Congratulations on that. I wish you well for it.

Hi Nikki,

I hope you've had a better day today?

I'm just in from my first day volunteering and despite me being a bit anxious about it it went ok. I passed a good deal of the day doing admin work and as a result my overall anxiety levels have dropped a lot from yesterday. I'm back in on Friday so will be working Weds, Fri and Mon. of every week.

I had a really awful nights sleep last night and I'm dropping. That's to be expected though thinking about today and cutting seroquel as it's one of the main symptoms. I hope it resolves itself.

Hi Steve

Well done on your work day! Sounds good. But sorry to hear about your bad night. I hope you sleep better tonight.

Have been bedbound today. Akathisia was up and the terror. Able to shower late afternoon and less depressed right now and terror lifted. Still confused about these drugs and holding.

I've had another bad nights sleep. Very broken up and restless but I probably got about 4 hours. I think it goes with the territory when coming off of Seroquel. I'm hoping it will pass soon though.

Hi Steve

Thanks. I seem to be in a wave with the akathisia and nasty mental stuff (intrusive thoughts n such) and panic. This agitation makes me not myself, feel all angry and aggressive it’s horrible.

Ugh broken night and not enough sleep for you! Yes it’ll be the taper.
