Michael77: Severe reaction when on 5 CNS medications

Recommended Posts

8 months ago I was on.

Primidone 500mg

Vraylar 6mg

Cymbalta 120mg

Zoloft 200mg

Clonezapam 2mg

My kidney function had dropped to 42% and a certain NP for a award winning psychologist continued treatment after noticing major muscle movement disorder. After a few months of this she stopped vraylar 6mg cold turkey. I had a reaction within days of cognitive impairment. I could not handle ANY external input. For a month I could only stare at the ceiling in total darkness and no sound. No TV and food had to be something I could grab and eat in bed in the dark. I lost 40lbs in 3mo because of stomach issues and me being unable to get food for myself.

When I confronted her about my problems she informed me it could not be medicine related and sent me to see her friend a counceller who agreed with her and added that my condition was totally " behavioral " I was still on everything except vraylar. That is when I started doing some research and quit seeing both doctors.

I had a genesight survey which NP had access to that listed 3 meds she had me on as a high risk and I am a poor drug metabolizer. In the drug interaction checker I showed her 5 serious interactions which she ignored. I was in a state of total apathy, did not care if I lived or died. I could not find any help in the psychologist field. I could not even manage to keep myself fed or handle phone or internet. I begged several times a Dr I had seen before her to help me but she would not accept me as a new patient.

Finally after 50 calls my mom had to make...because no doctors were accepting new patients or they did not take my insurance....i got an appointment with an neurologist/psychologist I had seen before. He was amazed the amount of medications I was on and recommended I start coming off them. However he could not manage my taper but did recommended a taper that I followed. I finally got into see a local psychologist who agreed on taper....which was basically drop one at a time by half every 2 weeks. Way to fast I believe after reading your site.

I cannot get anyone to answer what happened to me. It's now been 7mos and I can at least type and watch tv.....i still have crippling anxiety and depression. I have came off Cymbalta, vraylar, zoloft, and halfed clonezapam. But I'm still having horrible symptoms I never had before. I've been on at least 12 antidepressants and antipsychotic medications over the past 8yrs for bipolar. Before that I was on nothing for 10 years with no problems. I did have issues in my teens. But it's been downhill ever since I had a nervous breakdown due to extreme stress that lasted years 8 years ago and I started trusting doctors that I needed medication.

I had to go on disability 5 years ago due to medication side effects. Before the pills started I had a successful career and ran half marathons. I am thinking about contacting a lawyer. Does anyone have experience with such a drug combo, how long this will last? What happened? Or if seeing a lawyer may be a good idea?

Hi Micheal77,

Welcome to Surviving Antidepressants (SA), am really glad that you found your way to the site.  It sounds like you have been on the prescription drug roller coaster.  For the life of me, I simply cannot understand why doctors are playing Russian Roulette with their patients.  I believe there is enough information out there warning people to taper off of these drugs carefully and not sure why a medical doctor wouldn't be aware of this.  In any event, I can certainly understand your desire to consult with a lawyer, I know I did when I initially found out I was dependant on a drug that I was told was not addictive but had inadvertently become physiologically dependant on, I was very angry.  While I can't offer any helpful advice regarding litigation, I can provide you with information on what is recommended here at Surviving Antidepressants in order to taper off of these drugs safely.

Surviving Antidepressants recommends that a person taper by no more than 10% of their current dose with at least a four week hold in-between decreases.  The 10% taper recommendation is a harm reduction approach to going off psychiatric drugs.  Some people may have to taper at a more conservative rate as they are sensitive to even the smallest drops.

I am glad that you have found a psychologist who can at least assist with your taper and with the information provided here, hopefully you can educate them on the importance of tapering cautiously so that you can successfully discontinue what drugs you are still taking with minimal withdrawal effects and to get your life back on track.  For the time being, I would suggest that you stop tapering/discontinuing any of the drugs that you remain on until we can help put together a proper plan to get you stabilized.

In order to provide information specific to your situation, as it's not entirely clear what drugs and their dosages you are currently on now (Primidone 500mg/Clonazepam 1mg -- is this correct?), we would ask that you complete a withdrawal history signature (see below).  This signature will become a permanent part of your introduction thread and ask that you post all of your questions back in this thread.

We ask all of our members to fill out a signature so that all of your information can be read at a glance.  This helps moderators determine you current situation and we would ask that you follow the instructions at the link below.

Instructions:  Withdrawal History Signature

 •    Please leave out symptoms and diagnoses.
 •    A list is easier to understand than one or multiple paragraphs.
 •    Any drugs prior to 24 months ago can just be listed with start and stop years.
 •    Please use actual dates or approximate dates (mid-June, Late October) rather than relative time frames (last week, 3 months ago)
 •    Spell out months, e.g. "October" or "Oct."; 9/1/2016 can be interpreted as Jan. 9, 2016 or Sept. 1, 2016.

Because you have/were taking multiple drugs, it is important for you to review the link on "Taking Multiple Psych Drugs - Which to Taper First".  As well, I am attaching a number of links that will help guide you to put a plan together that will allow you to taper off all of these drugs safely.  I'm also including a couple of links on how to speak with your psychologist to bring them on board and work with them collaboratively with your desire to stop taking these drugs.

Thank you for checking in. I've been in bad shape. It is where I don't want to talk to anyone. Mind is racing. And after calling 50 doctors only found 2 who are taking New patients and on my insurance. I went to  both and they tell me without a doubt the medications I came off of are not causing this. I came off cymbalta and zoloft. And they wanted to put me on a high dose of medicines again. I am so worn out mentally i am loosing my grip. Dangerous. I let them put me on mild dose of wellbutrin 150mg and seroquel 200. They wanted 300 wellbutrin and 800 seroquel along with another antipsychotic i will not try. I don't trust them. This famous Dr in Atlanta was the worst I've ever seen. He is #1 out of 600 in his field for prescribing medication and the first thing he tried me on was trintillix which he received almost $300,000 form trintillix drug company and he did not listen when I told him about serious side effects....Which he told me to stay on it. After a few weeks I refused to take it anymore. He passed me onto a PA who did not even know what they put me on the last visit. It's a horrible office.

It seems they always lie for each other and will not give me a answer as to what happened to me. Ive tried to find a lawyer.....but everyone tells me it is almost pointless. I was so messed up I could barely feed myself and could only sit in a dark quiet room for months. It's like I'm having to relearn how to LIVE.

They tell me drugs are out of so system within 2 weeks so they cannot be causing my problems. Which i know is bull. I NEED help....But no doctor will tell me anything. Even when I give them documents that show what could have happened. I cannot regain control....its like my brain suffered serious damage.

M77 I am so sorry I didn't check up on you sooner.

I am so sorry you didn't come back and respond to baroque's welcome and request for drug sig.

You don't need to be shy around here. And I'm so sorry when seeking help and answers fro wdl symptoms you ended back in the nefarious arms of the medical profession only to be chemically assaulted once again.

After reading this I am deeply shocked  and after hanging out on this forum for a couple of years I start to get un-shockable but boy this is something else.

The mods here can walk you through how to stabilize and get off safely. Is that something that may interest you. If so are you able to do the drug signature?

Hello Michael,

Can you do a drug signature so the moderators can help you?  I am so sorry to read about what happened to you, but I really have faith that the people on this forum can help you stabilize.  You just need to provide some information.  You can regain control.

Best wishes for healing,

My god. That was total crime what the doctors did to you!

im so sorry you were put into the crazy mess and suffered so incredibly !

Are re you feeling better overall now as compared to the meds time? Did you stop all meds since 8 months ago?

I have slowly regained some kind of life. It's like my brain shut down from medicine overload. At first I could not even watch tv or be in the room with anyone else. Now I can watch some tv and do a few things around the house. Most of the time I'm still overwhelmed by simple things I used to do. I cannot go out....drive...talk only when I need to. I have to be able to get into dark quiet place and even having anyone over to my house gets very stressful.

To answer your question I was only off everything but clonazepam for few months. Now I had to go on something because I could not take it anymore. So im not feeling much better. Needed something to help I was desperate. Thank you for your thoughts.

Hi Michael, I'm so sad and angry for what has happened to you.  It is criminal.  We have similar stories 😞 I was also put on trintellex but it is call brintellix (vortioxetine) here in Australia.  I'm here to support you in any way I can. K

Hello kristine. That drug is advertising so much here it is ridiculous. I bet he never reported my side effects from it. But I struggle to just do this forum at times. So even thinking of filing paperwork and facing these doctors keep me up at night.  Dollarsfordocs helped me see that doctors motive....first pill he gave me even though it is on my genesight survey as a dangerous drug for me.

Thank you for reaching out.

Hello Michael,

Can you do a drug signature so the moderators can help you?  I am so sorry to read about what happened to you, but I really have faith that the people on this forum can help you stabilize.  You just need to provide some information.  You can regain control.

Best wishes for healing,

RealMe

Thank you Real me,

I will try to get more info up for the moderators. It's difficult for me to type or do anything much. I k now doctors did not taper me properly but when I think what it done to me it shuts me down even more. I will try to keep up with this forum for help. But to be honest my mind is so messed up I cannot get on the internet much it just wears me out and makes me that much angrier about the mistakes Dr made and whole pharma industry that is horrible. Regain control I cannot. I'm so exhausted and my brain does not work like it used to. I'm a way different person.

Hi Michael,  Thankfully in Australia we are not subjected to prescription drug advertising on television.  However, I think Australia is the third highest prescriber of psychotropic medications in the world.  I understand how angry you are, I'm angry for you.  I managed to write a draft letter of complaint regarding the psychiatrist who polydrugged me.  However,  I've realised I can not do anymore in this area until I regain my physical and mental strength.  So I have decided to focus on my recovery.  It took a long time for me to write my medication signature for SA.  But it was worth it....the moderators can guide you once you have done that.  Maybe your mum could help you?  Or Maybe try writing a little bit at a time one a piece of paper...You are not alone.K

Ok i will work on it. It is just so confusing. Misleading. Who to trust a doctor? Or someone off internet. I mean they tell 2 different stories and this group along with others tell a whole side that if brought to a Dr they weasel there way avoid question say they need longer and here take more pills In the meantime. The internet side seems a lot more honest and up to date but shouldn't a doctor be better....I didn't study 8 years. Being so beat down I don't trust anyone or thing because I cannot afford another mistake with my life....I would not make it. My mom does try to help. But we are stuck...pills vs no pills drive me crazy and thinking makes it worse.

You have raised a very good point M77

We have all struggled with this issue. Many suffer Stockholm syndrome and have been unable to break away...its not easy when fearing your life is at risk,  and isolated while being in the presence of someone who smiles and exudes confident self belief.

Heres the thing if you wanted to learn skydiving who ya gonna listen too someone who has done it thousands of times and landed safely or someone who has never done it and thinks they know all about it and is reading from a fraudulent instruction manual.

Ask your doctor if he has ever taken any of this stuff for himself if he says no then invite him to try 800mg or Seroquel for a month...if he refuses then clearly he does not have a credible voice on the topic. No one knows about a drug better than the one who has or is taking it!

please I beg you to get the book 'anatomy of an epidemic' by r whitaker and read it. If there is only one book you read this month, this year, this week may it be this one.

Its not a difficult read in fact I couldn't put it down once I started. It will be available from the library.

Also your drug may be your problem by Breggin

Its not so much about pills vs no pills but more of a situation of addiction by stealth and safe tapering to get free. Once addiction is established you cant just stop the pills they are a necessary evil until you can safely taper off.

You don't have to reveal your age but are you a minor?

What do you think about doing the drug sig.

There are people here that can help you. That have been through this and understand.

Thought for the day: Lets stand up, and let’s speak out , together. G Olsen

We have until the 14th. Feb 2018.

URGENT REQUEST Please consider submitting  for the petition on Prescribed Drug Dependence and Withdrawal currently awaiting its third consideration at the Scottish Parliament. You don't even have to be from Scotland. By clicking on the link below you can read some of the previous submissions but be warned many of them are quite harrowing.

http://www.parliament.scot/GettingInvolved/Petitions/PE01651

Please tell them about your problems taking and withdrawing from antidepressants and/or benzos.

Send by email to petitions@parliament.scot and quote PE01651 in the subject heading. Keep to a maximum of 3 sides of A4 and you can't name for legal reasons any doctor you have consulted. Tell them if you wish to remain anonymous. We need the numbers to help convince the committee members we are not isolated cases. You have until mid February. Thank you

None of the published articles shed light on what ssri's ... actually do or what their hazards might be. Healy 2013.

This is so true, with anything you get on these drugs, dependance, tapering, withdrawal symptoms, side effects, just silent. And if there is something mentioned then their is a serious disconnect between what is said and reality!

"Every time I read of a multi-person shooting, I always presume that person had just started a SSRI or had just stopped."  Dr Mosher. Me too!

Over two decades later, the number of antidepressant prescriptions a year is slightly more than the number of people in the Western world. Most (nine out of 10) prescriptions are for patients who faced difficulties on stopping, equating to about a tenth of the population. These patients are often advised to continue treatment because their difficulties indicate they need ongoing treatment, just as a person with diabetes needs insulin. Healy 2015

I believe the ssri era will soon stand as one of the most shameful in the history of medicine. Healy 2015

Hi Michael, Trust is earned.  Your doctors broke that trust and the hypocratic oath "first do no harm".  SA only exists because of those failures.  I was offered advice and support (still am) but it was my choice which path to follow. Hello, Thank you all for your support and hard work on this site. It meant a lot to me that you checked upon me. Ive not been active, but ive read alot and its helped. I am actually Finally regaining cognitive functioning again to a point where I can participate in this forum. I was kind of in a internet blackout where I could not handle being online talking. It was actually good for me, ive gained a connection with the earth and im learning to STOP and smell the roses if you will. Plus the fact I gained a wonderful girlfriend that is patient and understanding, I was going to show her this and some of the FAQs, she is a nurse so that helps.......who believes in natural healing. I will search see which articles would be best. Any favorites?

Hello everyone, thanks for checking in chessiecat. I have been through hell, got burned....so I have not been on social media for almost a year. Good news is I Finally got my mind back enough to reason and read again. I was a geek in high school, loved to read. A very strange and maybe devine series of events came into play; more on that later " the statistics of things happening are overwhelming " so I have looked for more spiritual guidance. I was in a severe depression because after being put through almost an entire lifetime of psychiatric medicines, ect, and finding out the lithium, epilepsy meds, misunderstanding of parents, and society that scared me for life was all a misdiagnosis. They now believed it was a physical Dysautonomia. I now have cardiac, kidney, thyroid, migraine, balance, and eyesight issues. Personally I think it was triggered by the major overdoses, however when I have consulted records it may have been with me in lessor form's since I was 14. I'm 42 now. So this past year I have been trying to cope with both physical and mental issues that arise from facing you may never get better only worse.

Just months ago i was so incapable of thinking clearly and in such a deep depression I had rather not share it here. My drs were scared. Due to tremors one day months ago I started back on primidone and it knocked me out of the severe depression in 2 days!! I was able to do things I had not been able to in almost a year, then by mistake, I do not recommend this to anyone, I left the last antidepressant paxil 40mg I was on out of my medicine pack, then before I even knew I'd left them out I COULD READ AGAIN. And I was able to comprehend, so I started being my own advocate. The chances of those 2 things happening are astronomical for me because I know the dangers....hence why I went more spiritual. But that drastic of a snap back to reality is not recommend.

They now think it is POTS or some other related dysfunction, however the wait to get diagnosed is 3 yrs Vanderbilt, or 8mo if I go to a self pay clinic. What is your life Worth? As you can probably guess now the doctors are lost again, cardiologist, electro-cardiologist, neurologist, psychologist among many others that all see abnormalities but cannot look past their specific areas to put me a whole picture together. These abnormalities have been with me as I mentioned before, but 10 years ago I was able to land a good job, run half marathons, win 5ks age, tough murders top 15%, spartan races, now I'm on disability and don't drive but rarely. However I am thinking more clearly now, and starting to rebuild what I can. This dysanomia? has my physical body in such disorder I've been in and out of hospitals, have to watch everything.....heart.....fluid intake.....I drop 2lbs a day if I don't watch it and end up back at ER.

But mentally I'm OK. Its been along time 8yrs since I can say that. Not depressed, although very frustrated. Anxiety is manageable, I've even quit spending money i should not, and making more intelligent choices.....that stopped with the paxil. Long post I know, but I hope to help others when I feel better. I've got to take this rebuild slow, so cannot be active on any groups. Focusing on myself and family / friends that have been with me throughout this 28yr trial by fire. Lol, I'm not manic, just had alot to cover before I sign out for IDK how long....it is an added stressor. But I appreciate the work this group does, and hope to do more on it when I'm more up to the task.
