Oh my friend,

I am so very sorry you are struggling so.  It makes total sense with everything going on that you forgot to take your medicine at the right time.  Oh, I have done that and the penalty is not kind.  A brutal and unnecessary reminder of the impact these nasty things have on us.

Is there anything at all that offers you relief or is it the worst of 4 letter words--time?

Know that I am thinking of you and sending you a hug from oh so far away.

Hoping some relief heads your way soonest.

take care,

JS11

P.S.  Keep swearing at those voices.

Hey lovely JS,  Yes, I think I may have found something helpful.  I had an idea today and it was actually because of you.  On your thread you mentioned the following.....

Wild little Brownie.  One of my favorite books growing up was called The Part Time Dog.  The main character, Brownie, was a little dog who ate breakfast at one house, dinner at another and slept at a third.  Each family (the women of the house were in charge), thought Brownie was someone else's dog.  Then one day the dog catcher took trusting little Brownie to the pokie.  The three ladies adopted Brownie and fenced in their backyards.  So Brownie belonged to all of them.

I love that story and it still makes me cry....

Just sayin'

Oh my goodness, I remember that book, The Part Time Dog. I loved that story.  I had forgotten all about it until I read your post. Thanks for reminding me.

I have never heard of or read 'The Part Time Dog'....but it got me thinking.  As a child I would disappear into the world of books.  I was the kid with her book and torch under the bed sheets in the middle of the night. One of my favourite authors was Enid Blyton.  You name it I read it.  Anyway, this lead me to amazon and they have a free 30day audio book trial. So, I downloaded 'The Enchanted Wood' ....read by Kate Winslet. It's glorious. I've been listening to it in the foetal position in bed......it has actually calmed me down....might seem strange to some people but hey, if it works what's the harm!  Lord, if im not careful I'm going to start sucking my thumb!!!!

Thank you JS for unwittingly leading me towards some peace ☺️ K xox

Audible has literally saved my life so many times during withdwal. Lexapro destroyed my ability to read but Audible gave it back! I find it so soothing and am glad it is helping you right now.

Hi LRH,  I had forgotten that you listed audio books in your toolbox!  I've got a memory like a sieve.  You must have planted the original seed in this mushy brain of mine.  I never thought I'd be listening to an audio children's story...but I was in such a horrible place today, I was grasping at straws! And it worked! A simple calming story about an enchanted wood and the magic faraway tree!!  Do you have any favourites...any soothing narrators? K xo

Hi K.,

Books are magic.  I am not really able to read anything other than this site and short newspaper or magazine articles.  How lovely that you got some relief and touched on some pleasant childhood memories as well.

Hope it continues to soothe your soul.

Hey K.,

No, not much yelling.  Not so much in the mood today.  But was a good feeling to be there.  Saw some familiar faces which is always nice.

Hope your symptoms are easing up a bit.

take care,

JS

Hello, I am new to this site and would firstly like to extend my gratitude to all the people who have shared their stories and support. I now know I am not alone.  My story is long and complex so I will attempt to condense it. I am 43 years old and was introduced to antidepressants 10 years ago after being diagnosed with MDD, GAD and PTSD (l do not feel comfortable with labels) by my psychiatrist.

During the first 8 years of treatment multiple antidepressants and other psychotropic medications were prescribed. I will fast forward to October 2015 when I attempted to end my life (I had never been suicidal prior to taking antidepressants). I had to resign from work and was hospitalised for 1 month.  At the time I had been taking citalopram for a number of years and had reached the maximum dose.  My intuition told me it was not helping.  I wanted to stop this medication and my psychiatrist was supportive of this decision.  However, it is obvious to me now that she was inexperienced and uneducated with this process. The citalopram was ceased over one week and due to severe anxiety I was commenced on seroquel and diazepam. After leaving hospital I managed to taper off the seroquel and diazepam but became increasingly unwell both mentally and physically.  My psychiatrist convinced me that my mental illness had returned and I was commenced on Parnate which was increased in dose over 3 months.  Instead of improving my mental and physical ailments worsened and my psychiatrist sort a second opinion.

I was hospitalised again in May 2016 under the 'care' of another psychiatrist.  This was the beginning of an indescribable hell where I was treated like a human lab rat.  Looking back the medications he prescribed were beyond belief and I was the victim of poly pharmacy without adequte professional rational. Unfortunally, like so many others, I was vulnerable and trusted his guidance.  He treated me as both an inpatient and out patient over a one year period.  Over this time I was prescribed over 14 psychotropic medication some of which were abruptly ceased and crossed over with other medications. If this wasn't enough I was subjected to 15 sessions of unnessaccery ECT.  Not surprisingly, I was in a zombified state, unable to function and unable to return to work.  My anxiety and depression was not alleviated and I was plagued with tremors, nausea, vomiting, fatigue and migraines.  By April 2017 I ceased my appointments with this psychiatrist (he had little belief in withdraw symptoms or side effects of the medication he prescribed - he resorted to blaming me) and returned to my previous psychiatrist.

Over the past eight months I have the mammoth task of withdrawing from multiple medications.  These include escitalopram (completed reduction), Lithium (competed reduction), clonazepam (partial reduction), bupropion (completed reduction), seroquel (completed reduction), dexamphetamine (partial reduction) and fluoxetine (no reduction).  My withdrawal symptoms are horrendous and relentless.  My psychiatrist has been unable to advise me along a comfortable path.  She appears to be in denial and her support has mostly evaporated.  I feel abandoned, alone and frightened.  I was forced to seek information independently (for which I am grateful), which continues to be a hideous realisation that for years I was in a constant state of drug withdrawal, side effects and drug interaction.  I also feeling very angry about my treatment.  I am tapering at the 10% rate now (one medication at a time) but even though I know road ahead will be long and rocky, I feel a sense of empowerment from educating myself.  What I am experiencing is common and I am finally breaking free from the clutches of psychiatry.

Your story unfortunately resonates with me, I have been advised by the moderators to stay on the same doses and I will eventually stabilize and feel much more like my "normal" self, and can then resume a taper. My question to the moderators would be, it seems like you have done this and remain stable with your Prozac, but have not achieved any level of stabilization in the year you have stayed stable. Why is that, and am I just living a pipe dream "waiting" to stabilize?

Hi Dave, lovely to meet you.  I've read your intro and looked at your sig, I'm truly sorry you are suffering.  This mess is no picnic.  I'm not sure I understand your question...this is not surprising considering I'm having trouble thinking!  Firstly, it is important to to note I was prescribed 14 different psychotropic medications since January 2016.  Over the past 10 years the total number exceeds 30 psychotropic medications (not all of these are in my drug sig -space issues). I was suffering from unrecognised/undiagnosed PAWS in January 2016. So I was not mentally ill but treated as such. In the space of two years 11 of these medications have been ceased and two tapered significantly.  I felt I had choice but to go 'fast'...even though I had not found SA at the time.  Major drug interactions and side effects could not be ignored. I was very ill.  I'm slowly tapering now.  Particually over the past 26 months I have never been symptom free.  As a result I focus on changes and severity of symptoms not so much on the symptoms themselves.  If at the lower end of the scale I'll consider tapering.  Currently I have many life event going on. Eg. Moving house which has been detrimental to my CNS, which is why I haven't tapered since the 19th of December.  So...yes, I have been stabilising (ie. improving) but far from symptom free.  Also, personally I am not clinging to the hope I will return to "normal" or my high functioning self.  I've set my expectations lower at the moment because my goals have to be achievable and I do not want to set myself up for failure...done that in the past!  Dose this make sense? Im happy to answer any questions you have.  I was also on zyprexa (olanzapine) so I understand your concerns.

Cheers, K 🌻

Hi Lovely 🙂

Update:  I don't really think my symptoms are worth giving too much thought at the moment.....moved house again yesterday which will be the last move until the renos are complete....upheaval in ones life = distressed nervous system = exacerbated symptoms eg. Headaches become migraines, anxiety becomes panic, panic becomes terror...and so on.....

Yesterday was a reminder of how physically weak and fragile I am.  Unpacking boxes lead to a strain in my lower back which has left me even more disabled than usual.  All over body pain, tremors, dizziness (no vertigo 😊) and uncoordinated movements just add to the overwhelming feeling.  Have forced myself to rest in bed as others work hard.  Trying very hard not to feel guilty.  The dust should become more settled soon.

Onwards we march. Love to you all. K 🌻

Wow Kristine, is that 2 moves in 2 weeks? Hope the dust settles soon.

I definitely understand the guilt feelings for not being able to do much. It's been10 weeks since going CT, and 7 weeks of hell. When my doctor asked me what I had been doing through all this WD (he was thinking hiding in bed), I broke down and wailed, "well I'm not doing the laundry, the dishes, the cooking or the cleaning".

Hell, my Christmas decorations are still up. Hey, I'm 11 months ahead of schedule!

My memory is a sieve.  What I can remember:

Trust me hun, it's not always good. My husband can attest to the whirlwind of mood swings and emotions. I can't count how many times I've broken down in the last couple of months, bawling, screaming, swearing in the middle of my kitchen floors.

Yes, two moves...long story but this house wasn't quite ready so we house sat another for a week.  Guilt, such an energy grabbing emotion with no benefit for anyone.  We can only achieve what is achievable.

Yeah, leave the decorations in place! If it makes you feel any better....I didn't attend to my usual Christmas decoration routine.  Our Christmas "tree" was plum tree branches in a large vase.  The glossy red plums made the perfect "ornaments"! 😄 K xo

I am impressed with how you two are keeping it together. I actually almost felt some emotion. I almost cried. Real tears almost came out of my eyes. How do you have such good attitudes?

Trust me hun, it's not always good. My husband can attest to the whirlwind of mood swings and emotions. I can't count how many times I've broken down in the last couple of months, bawling, screaming, swearing in the middle of my kitchen floors.

Hi D, I have to agree with Jane...I'm an emotional four seasons in one day kinda girl.  I've got better identifying the first twinges of possible meltdown..so will retreat to my room and put my 'self care' toolbox stuff into practice. But sometimes I don't catch it in time and unfortunately the dominos fall. Hugs to you. K xo

I think you’re doing great. You must be made of strong stuff.

You think I'm strong, I think I'm weak. It's all in the eyes of the beholder. Everyone has good days and bad, each of us has to remember that. But thanks for the compliment.

My memory is a sieve.  What I can remember:

2006- Effexor started at 75mg upped to 300mg

somewhere after 2008- Switched to Cipralex started at 5mg upped to 20mg

2017- added Wellbutrin 150mg to Cipralex 20mg

occasional use of Ativan 0.5mg sublingual, usually given 7-10 tabs  -- (last used Nov 2017 ... previous? my mom's death probably? 2013)

Cold turkey Nov 13, 2017 (used Ativan once a day when it was unbearable until Rx finished)

24 Jan. 2018 - Reinstated Cipralex 5mg

31 Jan. 2018 - started Cetirizine Hydrochloride for severe allergies due to tattoo --- stopped 24 Feb. 2018

26 Feb. 2018 - Coversyl 4mg

Currently: 5mg Cipralex , 16mg Serc (for Meniere's), 4mg Coversyl (high blood pressure)

Supplements: 300mg Magnesium

Yes, two moves...long story but this house wasn't quite ready so we house sat another for a week.  Guilt, such an energy grabbing emotion with no benefit for anyone.  We can only achieve what is achievable.

Yeah, leave the decorations in place! If it makes you feel any better....I didn't attend to my usual Christmas decoration routine.  Our Christmas "tree" was plum tree branches in a large vase.  The glossy red plums made the perfect "ornaments"! 😄 K xo

Bugger. Guilt's a beyotch. Thankfully I got 90% of my Christmas stuff done in the first few days of December, while I was still in that "I'm okay" phase of CT. WD really didn't smack me it the face until mid-December. Christmas dinner would have been toast & coffee if it hadn't been for my son & husband. God love them!

Amen! I remember when my elderly mom was living with us. She asked a simple, innocuous question, to which my response was "Oh My God, you can't be that f****** stupid!" Thankfully her dementia-filled mind didn't even register my comment, however, my guilt and shame threw me into a tailspin.

"Balancing the Scales" is an excellent way to think about it.  Because that's what your body is trying to do.  There are about a thousand pendulums, all of them trying to come into synchronisation, all of them trying to find their balance.  And while they are balancing - it feels all screwed up.

Fatigue has been lifelong for me.  It's what got me medicated, time and again.  I couldn't get off the floor.  And of course, we didn't know then that the drugs aggravate fatigue!

You know about counting spoons?  This comes from a chronic illness forum for those of us who look normal, but who struggle.  (and I believe that a lot of CFS/ME and fibromyalgia is induced by these psych drugs and a few other drugs like statins, stomach drugs, etc.)

The Spoon Theory by Christine

We only have so many spoons in a day, and we need to make sure those spoons are the important ones.

Hey JanC, I smiled when you mentioned The spoon Theory by Christine.  I first read about this during my hospital admission in October 2015.  I was reading a book by Jenny Lawson "Furiously happy: A Funny book about Horrible Things"...a memoir/comedy about this bloggers experiences of metal illness and everything attached to it (not about w/d).  She's one funny lady.  Anyway this is where I first learnt the spoon theory, as Jenny and Christine Miserandino are friends.  Over the years this has become an easy way for me to explain my limitations to hubby.  Or he will tell me to slow down...hey K, don't use all your spoons doing "..."save them for "...". Sometimes I only have one spoon and it's made of plastic.

The following is a quote from the book about "spoons".....love it......

“Do you know about the spoons? Because you should. The Spoon Theory was created by a friend of mine, Christine Miserandino, to explain the limits you have when you live with chronic illness. Most healthy people have a seemingly infinite number of spoons at their disposal, each one representing the energy needed to do a task. You get up in the morning. That’s a spoon. You take a shower. That’s a spoon. You work, and play, and clean, and love, and hate, and that’s lots of damn spoons … but if you are young and healthy you still have spoons left over as you fall asleep and wait for the new supply of spoons to be delivered in the morning. But if you are sick or in pain, your exhaustion changes you and the number of spoons you have. Autoimmune disease or chronic pain like I have with my arthritis cuts down on your spoons. Depression or anxiety takes away even more. Maybe you only have six spoons to use that day. Sometimes you have even fewer. And you look at the things you need to do and realize that you don’t have enough spoons to do them all. If you clean the house you won’t have any spoons left to exercise. You can visit a friend but you won’t have enough spoons to drive yourself back home. You can accomplish everything a normal person does for hours but then you hit a wall and fall into bed thinking, “I wish I could stop breathing for an hour because it’s exhausting, all this inhaling and exhaling.” And then your husband sees you lying on the bed and raises his eyebrow seductively and you say, “No. I can’t have sex with you today because there aren’t enough spoons,” and he looks at you strangely because that sounds kinky, and not in a good way. And you know you should explain the Spoon Theory so he won’t get mad but you don’t have the energy to explain properly because you used your last spoon of the morning picking up his dry cleaning so instead you just defensively yell: “I SPENT ALL MY SPOONS ON YOUR LAUNDRY,” and he says, “What the … You can’t pay for dry cleaning with spoons. What is wrong with you?” Now you’re mad because this is his fault too but you’re too tired to fight out loud and so you have the argument in your mind, but it doesn’t go well because you’re too tired to defend yourself even in your head, and the critical internal voices take over and you’re too tired not to believe them. Then you get more depressed and the next day you wake up with even fewer spoons and so you try to make spoons out of caffeine and willpower but that never really works. The only thing that does work is realizing that your lack of spoons is not your fault, and to remind yourself of that fact over and over as you compare your f*****- up life to everyone else’s just-as-f*****-up-but-not-as-noticeably-to-outsiders lives. Really, the only people you should be comparing yourself to would be people who make you feel better by comparison. For instance, people who are in comas, because those people have no spoons at all and you don’t see anyone judging them. Personally, I always compare myself to Galileo because everyone knows he’s fantastic, but he has no spoons at all because he’s dead. So technically I’m better than Galileo because all I’ve done is take a shower and already I’ve accomplished more than him today. If we were having a competition I’d have beaten him in daily accomplishments every damn day of my life. But I’m not gloating because Galileo can’t control his current spoon supply any more than I can, and if Galileo couldn’t figure out how to keep his dwindling spoon supply I think it’s pretty unfair of me to judge myself for mine. I’ve learned to use my spoons wisely. To say no. To push myself, but not too hard. To try to enjoy the amazingness of life while teetering at the edge of terror and fatigue"

🙂 K xo

Hey @Kristine,

Reading through your story thus far is encouraging and your resolve is amazing, I am in awe of your capacity to deal with all of this.

Moving is a nightmare, I read somewhere that for the first 11 days, our nervous system is upregulated and our brain doesn't switch off at night because we're in an unfamiliar setting - every creak and car sounds like a hungry tiger on the prowl to our primitive brains.

You mentioned that your psychiatrist hasn't been very helpful, do you have the capacity to see a psychologist or somebody who has experience in EMDR or any form of trauma processing work? Withdrawal and symptoms seem to impact me (and others I've spoken to) like a trauma and our nervous system can really benefit from some unwinding.

Here to support you in any capacity I can :)

Taper commencing 14/06/18:

  • Going down by 2.5mg per month from 35mg - once 2.5mg is bigger than the recommended 10%, I'll switch to a water solution.
  • Planning to taper until October and then hold until 2019 - balancing study, work, life and holiday season.

Medication / withdrawal history:

  • Tapered July 2016 to October 2016, unsuccessful and reinstated to 30mg (didn't track specifics)
  • Tapered March 2017 to August 2017, was unsuccessful and reinstated to 35mg (didn't track specifics).
  • Current taper - started 1st January 2018 @ 32.5mg and 2.5mg per month until I reach a dose where 2.5 is > 10% of dose.

Morning supplements:

B complex, Niagen, COQ10, Black seed oil, Vitamin C, Zinc, Fish Oil, EGCG, Bosweilla Extract, Curcumin (Longvida), Vitamin D, R-ALA, NAC, Ashwagandha (occasionally), Epimedium / Icariin, Resveratol.

Evening supplements:

NatureCalm Magnesium, Glycine, Ashwagandha, Reishi, Schisandra, Melatonin.

I also take Phenibut (maximum 3 times weekly at a dose that doesn't build tolerance) and Oleamide when required.

Hi NS,  Thank you for your kind words and for stopping by my thread.  I've been reading the link on your thread regarding choosing your SA name...so true, so moving...thank you.

Yes, moving house.  I've read you have also recently moved. I'm hoping you have settled a little more..but the heat isn't going to subside for a while. 11 days eh? That makes sense.  My fight or flight response is definitely in hypervigelent status.

There are two psychiatrists in my thread..it can get confusing.  But in my intro I wrote that my psychiatrist's support had mostly evaporated. I misjudged this and if you continue to read you'll find she is not a typical psychiatrist.  No need to read cause it's a bit of a saga!!!!  The psychiatrist who caused me the most damage took over my medication management for just under a year.  14 drugs in 11 months...beyond deplorable. He was treating undiagnosed PAWS from citalopram 40mg being ceased over one week.  I wasn't mentally ill...I was suffering protracted withdrawal.

It is lovely to have met you and I'm also happy to support you in anyway I can. Cheers. K 🌻

Hi Kristine,

I read through your thread.  Wow.  It's dumbfounding what that psychiatrist did to you.

You are amazing.  I hope that this is just a bad dream someday!

It will be good when your renovations are finished and you can settle back in your home. Living in an unfamiliar environment must be hard with withdrawal. My home is definitely a safe place for me..... well most of the time!!

Thank you LRH....I'm worn out to be honest.  Sometimes I feel like I can not possibly feel more exhausted...Then BAM! Proven wrong once again!  My husband and son did move my bed into this house which is lovely...nothing like sleeping in ones own bed. So that has helped me settle a little. K 🌻

Sorry to hear you're having a rough day. I'd offer a few spoons of my own, but alas needed them to do laundry and dishes today. It's probably the first time I've done all of it myself in a few months. Quite proud, but also quite exhausted.  Hugs my friend.

Dishes and Laundry!!  You have just entered superhero status in my opinion :) you should be very proud of yourself!  I think the fatigue is the underlying "biggest issue" for me.  It's been over two years and it is getting worse.  Maybe I should see a chronic fatigue specialist...probably a waste of time, money and more energy.  I have just had a shower and I feel like I have run a marathon. No exaggeration  this is bull****.  Hugs back. K xo

Hugs back. K xo

LOL well, I hung up my cape a few hours ago. I understand the feeling like running a marathon. There are days that's how I feel, especially when the heart palpitations are at their worst.

I can say the past week has been much better but insomnia, headaches, muscular body ache/pain, heightened senses, anxiety, depression, and irritability are daily companions :(  Prior to this (especially after I dropped 5mg of Dex on the 21st October 2017) my w/d symptoms were truly horrific.  The following is from an entry in my diary on the 4th November 2017
