Justin332: Paxil withdrawal - scared and need advice

Hey everyone,

I’m hopeful this site can help me figure out what to do or how to even cope. I’m a 37 year old, successful salesman, an extrovert, generally positive individual. I’ve always had anxiety as a big part of my life and also struggle with just excessive worrying.

I was out on Paxil while in college around the year 2000. I was having major anxiety and depression with dealing with being gay and the 40mg of Paxil seemed to do the trick.

Long story short, 17 years have passed and i had a bit of a rough year dating this year, and a doc decided to put me on trintellix because it was so much safer and better for you. He also thought it would be very easy to switch from Paxil.  This was in August of this year.

Id always wanted to get off of Paxil, and had only been taking 10 milligrams since around 2012. I accepted this change as an opportunity to get off the drug. I thought it worked.

I noticed as my time with trintellix went on, i was incredibly tired, fatigued, and the worrying went on and on. Eventually suicidal thoughts came on and i went from 19mg trintellix, to 5mg trintellix, to off everything December first. I am not sure if i was having Paxil withdrawal or if the trintellix was affecting me.

Anyways, it’s now the day after Christmas, 26 days after the last dose of trintellix, and i am riddled with anxiety. I’m not having panic attacks like I’m used to, but just a general anxiety and feeling of dread. I’m very concerned this is the new me. Could it still be the Paxil?

I have had days as well where i feel really great about things as well since December first. It’s like I’m either really happy and full of optimism or full of dread and hipelessness with anxiety.

I have so so much to be thankful for. I want to feel good again. Does anyone have any insight?  I don’t know what else to do. The psychiatrist wants to put me on 10mg of Prozac because he feels i should be better by now.  I don’t want to get back on SSRIs if i don’t have to.

Sincerely,

Feeling alone in Dallas

I should be clear that i was on 40mg of Paxil from 2000-2005, 20mg from 2005-2012, and 10mg of Paxil from 2012 until August of this year.

August i was put on 10mg of trintellix, and then 5mg after i was feeling dark thoughts (Paxil withdrawal?) and major fatigue.

I stopped trintellix december first and as and as of December 26th still ha e anxiety pretty bad.

Welcome, Justin.

Hi Justin, Welcome to SA ☺️ I had a bad reaction to Trintellix (called Brintellix in Australia - Vortioxetine).  Dark thoughts, nausea and vomiting....I was also suffering withdrawal from other medications....sometimes it is difficult to distinguish between the side effects of medication and the symptoms of withdrawal.  There are many invaluable resources on this site. You will begin to make sense of your painful symptoms and be supported through this mess. You will be ok Justin. You are not Alone. K.

Hello Justin332. I just read your introduction, and feel I can relate somewhat, so I thought I would say a few words. Firstly sorry to hear about what you're going through.

Personally I think it's different getting off these 'medications' for everyone, but in case it's helpful at all: for me, after the original couple year slow and rocky taper, the first few days after stopping completely felt amazing. And then I crashed HARD. I dealt with this incessant feeling of 'impending doom', that would seem to come up out of nowhere. I truly experienced what never ending anxiety felt like, which I had never felt before in my life. I literally couldn't watch any movies or television besides one or two comforting programs, because it triggered too many negative emotions. It felt like 13 years of suppressed emotions coming back to punch me in the face. And I was really shocked at how slow the recovery process was/is. So slow that I actually didn't ever notice any improvements until enough time would pass that I could re-read journal entries, and know that I was no longer in that place, and actually was improving. And literally every single doctor/psychiatrist/psychologist I have spoken with since then has said they believe I need to go back on them. So I think be weary, or at least have a vigilant skepticism when receiving medical advice regarding reinstating.

I'm not finished healing yet, but I have definitely made huge improvements in my mental state. And that initial deep fear and dread DOES go away, no matter how incessant it is, and how much your mind will lie to you that it will last forever. Daily rigorous exercise has also become really important for me.

Best wishes.

2000 - 2011 - 20mg Paxil (with many short failed stints each year of trying to discontinue)

2011 - 2013 - 10mg Cipralex (doctor's recommendation due to severe fatigue)

2013 - 2015 - 5mg Cipralex (managed to taper down slowly, but had to hold at 5mg)

2015 - 2016 - Bounced back and forth from 2.5mg to 5mg depending on coping strength

January 21st, 2017 - 100% SSRI free

We have until the 14th. Feb 2018.

URGENT REQUEST Please consider submitting  for the petition on Prescribed Drug Dependence and Withdrawal currently awaiting its third consideration at the Scottish Parliament. You don't even have to be from Scotland. By clicking on the link below you can read some of the previous submissions but be warned many of them are quite harrowing.

http://www.parliament.scot/GettingInvolved/Petitions/PE01651

Please tell them about your problems taking and withdrawing from antidepressants and/or benzos.

Send by email to petitions@parliament.scot and quote PE01651 in the subject heading. Keep to a maximum of 3 sides of A4 and you can't name for legal reasons any doctor you have consulted. Tell them if you wish to remain anonymous. We need the numbers to help convince the committee members we are not isolated cases. You have until mid February. Thank you

None of the published articles shed light on what ssri's ... actually do or what their hazards might be. Healy 2013.

This is so true, with anything you get on these drugs, dependance, tapering, withdrawal symptoms, side effects, just silent. And if there is something mentioned then their is a serious disconnect between what is said and reality!

Over two decades later, the number of antidepressant prescriptions a year is slightly more than the number of people in the Western world. Most (nine out of 10) prescriptions are for patients who faced difficulties on stopping, equating to about a tenth of the population. These patients are often advised to continue treatment because their difficulties indicate they need ongoing treatment, just as a person with diabetes needs insulin. Healy 2015

Justin I'm really sorry you have to go through this. After 17 years paxil use I would imo say the major player here is the paxil withdrawal. The symptoms you speak of are classic wdl symptoms and I am familiar with them as I too am a recovering paxil addict. It sounds to me like the trintellix didn't mask the paxil wdl.

This may be the case.

I hate to be the one to tell you this and I don't want to scare you but these symptoms may go on for some time ( many many months) and they may get worse before they get better.

In time they will get better and the uncontrollable distress will recede. But we could be talking many many many months. It took all of my strength and some to survive this forget holding down a job it was a full time job just to endure it. Rest assured this unfolding trauma has nothing to do with you and everything to do with drug withdrawal which sadly will be unacknowledged by doctors.

This whole site is full of people in the same situation as yourself. You are not alone.

If you feel you cant go on then sa recommends a small dose reinstatement.

imo id go for the paxil rather than the trinellix or prozac. You can read about it in the reinstatement threads.

Sorry you are going through ssri wdl but glad you have found a safe place like sa.

Because i took only 10mg of Paxil for about 5 years, he thought it was low enough to where i could go straight to trintellix.

I dont recall any immediate symptoms, but i do remember being very depressed and tired about three weeks in. The first three weeks i felt great.

I really appreciate all the feedback. I just woke up this morning and immediately my chest feels tight and i feel nervous about starting my day. I have a very demanding job, i can’t feel like this.

Have i i been on Paxil too long?  Is 17 years of Paxil too much to overcome? It’s been about 3-4 months off of it and off trintellix since December first and every day is a huge struggle. Is it worth staying off ignoring Paxil can alleviate this?

I wasn’t as negative about the withdrawal until i read this article, that states that sometimes your receptors burn out after long term use and never get better:  https://www.madinamerica.com/2017/08/how-to-avoid-severe-ssri-withdrawal-symptoms/

He not only says that, but also states reinstating meds could make me worse?  Am i having Akathisia? I’m not having any involuntary movements but i always feel nervous and not optimistic. Just not like me. Could this be permanent?

thank you everyone who responded. I just wish i knew 100% what to do to feel better.

My my doctor prescribed me 10mg of Prozac. Is that something some of you would consider?  Couldnthar help with the withdrawal?

thank you all so much.

So after a long talk with my psychiatrist, i started 10mg of Prozac to help me with this. A very low dose, and hopefully these feelings will subside. If anyone has any thoughts or support I’d aporeciTe it.

Welcome, Justin.

How did you switch from Paxil to Trintellix? Did you have any unusual symptoms when you did that?

I didn’t really. I’m reading a lot of the stories on here and people spend years having these symptoms. Is it worth it? I took Prozac today and am wondering if maybe just getting back on the 10mg of Paxil will take this akathisia away from me. I’ve had panic attacks but not this constant sense of dread.

Ive never felt so hopeless, obsessive, and anxious as i have the past few weeks. I have brief periods of clarity but not much.

I want ao badly for this to go away. Is the Paxil reinstatement a good idea? It’s been five months but only 4 weeks since i was on trintellix.

Are you on Prozac or Paxil? What dose?

If it is Paxil - how many days have your reinstated at 10 mg? How are you feeling?  Do you feel it is too much? If so, as it has only been a few days, I would perhaps drop down ~ to maybe 5 mg. it really depends on how you are feeling ~ is it better or worse since ?

Please keep notes over the next few days and we can monitor your symptoms ~ it helps to figure out what is going on.

The darkness is temporary and related to withdrawal. Once you get through this - you will be fine. It's not you - it's the drugs. You just have to hang on long enough to get through this. I understand as I've been there, myself. It's so totally different once you come out of the "fog".

It's going to be ok.

So, 5 days?. It takes about 4 days for it to become steady state in the blood and for your body to fully register the addition of the drug. Having said that it can sometimes take a few weeks particularly after any upset/ stress or change in conditions.

If you feel this dose is good for you ~ then holding would make sense until you are feeling stable.

If if i took trintellix until December first is there any chance I’ll snap out of this after the Paxil kicks back in? It’s been six days of taking it.

I'm sorry things are getting more complicated with more drugs being added.

How long are you intending to take the valium and the zolpidem for ?

Did the psych talk to you about addiction/dependency on these and how to taper off them? Gee these people are fast at dispensing drugs aren't they.

May I ask why do you feel you have to do this? ...is it for sleep ?

We all understand how difficult this is but it will settle down in time you just have to be patient here and try not to panic or get freaked out. We may be talking months. 6 days is very early in the game.

Sleep issues are common in wdl.

When drug dealers offer drugs ...it is totally okay to say no! We all forget about that option eh.

So i spent three nights in a behavioral health hospital where they gave me tegredol, zyprexa, and gabapentin as well as Paxil 10mg.

The psychiatrist didnt listen to me at all about any possibility of this being protracted withdrawal.

I am only taking the gabapentin and zyprexa now to sleep, and it’s helping me sleep but the akithesia is so bad.

Im home now and was able to sleep eight hours, in on my tenth day of taking Paxil at 10mg.

Will the paxil kick in and help and take it away? Or are my receptors permanently down and causing this panic?

im not sure why i can’t get many replies on this board, i need advice from people who understand.

Hi Justin,

I am so sorry you are going through this and had to go to the hospital.  I am hoping you get a response from a moderator but I wanted to let you know that you are not alone.

-1/06 - 3/07 Cymbalta. Fast taper (essentially CT); withdrawal symptoms after 4 mos (didn't realize was WD)

-10/07: 100 mg Zoloft; 1 mg Klonopin - tapered off Klonopin after 4 mos. Several unsuccessful slow tapers of Zoloft; went up and down in dose a lot

-Spring 2013 back on 1 mg Klonopin to counter WD symptoms; switched over 5-6 mos from Zoloft to 35 mg citalopram
-Two attempts at slow tapering citalopram, always increased dose due to WD; also increased Klonopin to 1.25 mg in 2014, then to 1.5 mg in 2015

-8/17-9/17: After holding one year at 20 mg, feeling withdrawal symptoms due to stress - slowly increased to 25 mg. No change in symptoms after 6 months (? tolerance ?)  - decided to start citalopram taper February 2018 (still on Klonopin 1.5 mg).

Supplements: fish oil; magnesium; vitamin D3; curcumin

Citalopram taper:  2/2018 - 12/2019: 25 mg - 11.03 mg I 2020: 10.89 mg - 7.9 mg I 2021: 7.8 mg - 5.26 mg I 2022: 5.2 mg - 3.36 mg I 2023: 3.3 mg - 1.47 mg 2024: 1/5/24: 1.44 mg; 1/19/24: 1.40 mg; 1/26/24: 1.37 mg; 2/2/24: 1.34 mg; 2/9/24: 1.31 mg; 2/23/24: 1.28 mg; 3/1/24: 1.25 mg; 3/8/24: 1.22 mg; 3/15/24: 1.19 mg

Justin,

When panic, anxiety, dread, and darkness take over your day, it can be some of the most horrible feelings in the world. Everybody's path is different yet mirrors a lot of the same things. So I can offer advice based on my experience and what I have read of others, and certainly the moderators on here and others have had more experience in mentoring others along in the journey, but I wanted to let you know that you're not alone, and unfortunately this can take some time. I also want to reiterate that for many, adding more medications can just make things worse. Also, reinstating may not make things better right away. It could take a month or two to feel a little better. There is no guaranteed timeline.

It helps to find nondrug ways to hang in there and muddle through the best you can. It doesn't sound like a lot of reassurance, but perhaps you can find something that will help calm the feelings for even a few minutes. Can you afford to go get a massage? Can you do some activity like riding a bike, yoga, Tai Chi, or the one that I use, Classical Stretch. I also did some breathing technique called Vivation, which helped me at least for a little time in the day to feel better. These can help trigger the relaxation response.

During my experience, I had so many medication changes that it could not be pinpointed which drug or drugs had caused my terrible response of constant daily anxiety, morning awakening, constant dread that something bad was going to happen, feeling like the world was ending, difficulty eating, sensitivity to a lot of sound/noise etc. So, there was no way to know what I could updose or downdose. From that point, I basically got down to 2 medications and holding for like 3 months for things to start settling down. That's the short version of my story. Also, valium is a tricky medication, and you might want to try the nondrug ways of handling the insomnia.

Here is a link on SA to some of these things.

Please hang in there best you can and keep reaching out. This may be your "normal" for awhile. One thing I learned was to accept that's how it was and to keep finding ways to get through my day by distracting myself or calling friends/family for support. I had to cycle through family members/friends so no one person got totally burned out from listening and helping me. A hotline could be another toolkit. I had a lady who helped me by phone from a local church, who was a  prayer warrior and had been through a lot. I'm not a big religious person, but her powerful prayers that she would text me and her phone support also meant a lot. Sometimes, I would just huddle on a bed next to my boyfriend while he watched TV, and that's all I could do. I couldn't even watch the show. I've used all kinds of positive CDs/books like Zig Ziglar and others to drown out the negative thoughts induced by this chemical disruption to the point where these things pop into my head when I need them the most. I read/listen to them on a daily basis as my fight is not over.

I know it's scary, and urgent, and needs to be fixed now. There's no quick fix. The sooner you can stay on a stable daily dose of your medicine and not add anything more and just hold with that and keep trying to find other things to help get you through the next day, hour, and minute, that may be where you find some stability.

2014-2015, tapered off risperdal 1 mg done 11/14, Librium 2/15 from 25 mg (switched from Klonopin), and Prozac 40 mg to 20 mg and went off without tapering last 20 mg I think (no record of that) by March or April 2015. Possible rebound anxiety started in May 2015 (plus I'm anxious anyway but controlled usually).

Flexeril in August 2015 (for a couple weeks) and then 1 5 mg dose of Prozac in September 2015. Either going off flexeril or trying the Prozac or both plus my previous jump off Prozac that spring set off withdrawal symptoms, which at the time I just thought was severe anxiety due to a frightening situation that had happened plus insomnia and neuro symptoms. Also had a 1-week of steroid in July 2015 that made things a lot worse (anxiety, obsessing)

Buspar, Sept. 2015, didn't work well (severe chest pain), tapered off. Ambien, 2 nights for terrible new insomnia. Afraid of Ambien and went on Mirtazapine. Tried some ativan 2 or 3 times during this time, felt great while on, but rebound anxiety severe so stopped.

Mirtazapine 15 mg, 1 night on Oct. 9 '15, brain fog, too sedated, groggy all day; Mirtazapine 7.5 mg for about a week. Told pdoc didn't like bc side effects. He said I could jump off. Tapered down to 5.8 mg in a few days and held to talk to doc. He said stay on, seemed to help. It is helping sleeping but nothing else. Went from 5.8 mg to 5.6 mg on one day and 5.7 mg the rest. Taken from 5.7 mg to 5 mg while hospitalized in December 2015. Took a total of 3 doses of Valium during that time. Started on less than 5 mg Paxil by pdoc after hospitalization.

Started lowering mirtazapine dose from 5 to 4.6 mg on Mondays on Jan 4, 2016. Horrible. 1/18/16. Held mirt at 5 mg and 4 mg Paxil by weight on scale until April 2016. Slowly tapering since then 0.1 mg at a time.

Current dose: 2/17, 3.4 mg mirtazapine; 2.4 mg paxil; 3/17, 3.1 mg mirt; 2.1 mg paxil; 7/17 2.8 mg mirt, 1.8 mg paxil; Jan 2018 1.5 mg paxil, 2.5 mg mirtazapine  Update; January 11, 2021:  1.1 mg paxil and 2.5 mg mirtazapine and holding since at least January 2019.

Justin, I'm sorry that your path off these medications has been rocky. Once a person's CNS (central nervous system) has been destabilized by medication changes, it can take many weeks for symptoms to settle into a regular pattern and many more weeks for the symptoms to weaken.  That isn't news you want to hear, but I hope it helps to know that paroxetine (paxil) is unlikely to make a difference in your symptoms for a while.

Justin please update the drug signature as requested.

This is heartbreaking but you were already taking valium and zolpidem for sleep ??

What do you think about the idea of when a doctor prescribes a drug that doing your own research on it prior to swallowing any may be to your advantage/protection.

Its not correct to assume that because a doctor prescribes it or a hospital that it is safe.

Were you informed of the side effects and wdl difficulty like say.... that Zyprexa can cause diabetes?  or that 12 people in the Zyprexa drug trials committed suicide and it appears the number of suicidal acts were well kind of not recorded or disclosed funny that....

Did you know Zyprexa is an antipsychotic ...in 1984 Lars Martensson observed that taking an antipsychotic is like having a "psychosis inducing agent built into the brain" .

How long are you intending to take this for?

Many of us here have sleep issues including myself but I have never ever in seven years considered taking a drug for it.

These are very dangerous drugs. You may find that the cost of sleep may be more than sleeplessness.

I cant believe that even in a 'behavioural' hospital they hit you with even more chemicals. That hospital should change its name or changes its actions.

"Every time I read of a multi-person shooting, I always presume that person had just started a SSRI or had just stopped."  Dr Mosher. Me too!

Healy 2015

I believe the ssri era will soon stand as one of the most shameful in the history of medicine. Healy 2015

To put you at ease, i haven’t taken zyprexa since Monday. Also haven’t taken Valium in a while either.

Reinstatement completely worked for me. I reinstated Paxil at 10mg which made the akithisia worse. On Sunday we switched to Paxil CR and now all anxiety and akithisia is completely gone.

I feel like i have a new lease on life.

I was having triuble sleeping as ping as soon as i stopped taking antidepressants. It’s gotten worse since i reinstated Paxil but i am very thankful to feel more like myself every day. I am unfortunately married to Paxil. 17 years and going lol.

Ill uodate my drug signatire. Any advice on sleeping would be greatly appreciated, or even why i can’t sleep.  It feels like I’m so tired, but it just won’t engage!

  • ChessieCat changed the title to Justin332: Paxil withdrawal, scared and need advice

16 days after restarting Paxil. I’m only getting four hours of sleep a night. It got worse after restarting Paxil. I know reinstatement is risky business from what I’ve read on here.

Should i give it time? Although I’m worried about this, i feel my mood is better.

Please respond. I really need guidance and/or encouragement. Thanks.

The fact that your mood is better is a very good sign.  Reinstatement can take quite a while to work, and you reinstated only 16 days ago.  Please hold steady and give it time.
